I used to DJ in the 80's in Newark. Living in Nottingham 23 miles away. Newark is very often ignored by people on their way to Lincoln or to the Coastal resorts of Skegness or Mablethorpe. It is a treasure trove of English history, particularly from the Civil War period. King Charles 1st raised his standard (flag) in Nottingham and that began the civil war. Nearby to Newark is the National Holocaust Museum which is a must to visit as well as spending real time in Newark.

Good video thank you, I live in Newark, what struck me about where you went in the Town was how many places you were left wondering what they were? If the Town council could be bothered to put a plaque on some places for the benefit of visitors like yourself it would have been much more informative for you.
There's an artisan deli called Porters just reopened in the corner of the market place that is well worth a visit. It sells locally produced meats, cheeses, pies and similar. It's a bit more expensive than the supermarkets but the quality of the food is superb. Also Sibley's butchers in Kirkgate, near the front of the church is similar, selling top quality, local produce. Their steak and Stilton pies are the best in town.
The stone thing at start of vid is Beaumont cross it used to be in the middle of the road many years ago at the lights just before that Asda petrol station. Market is on all year twice, mid week and Saturday. The buildings with the wide arches are old coach inns, where the coaches n horses were stabled overnight. The building in the castle grounds is the old Newark library. The large timbered building at the side me of the castle was a very early coffee house, a woman from the temperance movement had it built and is apparently haunted by her. She doesn't take kindly to alcohol being consumed on the premises or changes to the building.
My parents came from Newark, it is lovely. As a kid, I went down into the vaults, it used to be open, it was amazing. I wonder if they are still safe. There used to be a huge cattle market and all that brought to the town, and big well supported markets in the market place. Things change, not always for the best.

They say that when they dredged the River Trent outside the castle, they found hundreds of cannonballs and musket balls that had bounced off the castle wall. There are also two or three Civil War sconces (earthwork defences) dotted around the outskirts of the town.
When we were teenagers - 90s - we would go and show our friends the Church Spire at St Mary Magdeline in the market place. From the correct side in the right conditions you could see the hole through the spire caused by a cannon ball - or at least that's the story we were told!

@AbroadYorkshire Pubs I'd say the Fox and Crown (I'm biased), the Prince Rupert on Stodman Street, the Organ Grinder on Portland Street, the other end of town but only 5 mins walk. Kebabs, the Golden Grill on Albert Street gets my vote, not far from the Organ Grinder. Wide range, not haute cuisine but a late-night lifesaver with extra onions and hot chilli sauce. There are some craft beer places too if that's your thing.
@AbroadYorkshire the stables are going to be artisan units in the courtyard, and a wedding venue, it's not Finnished yet and they've spent 6 million on it
At 14 mins - this building was previously occupied by Nottinghamshire Building Society on the ground floor (they’ve moved) and the organisers of IACF International Antiques and Collectors fairs had the top couple of floors. I worked for IACF and my desk was in one of those windows. It resembled a medieval ship inside with all of the wood beams and plaster, which had perspex covers to protect the historic carvings.

A lot of people say it's not as good as it used to be and that's most probably true because people's shopping habits have changed. The history of the town is amazing but from a tourism perspective it is not marketed. St Mary's inside is a beautiful church but is undergoing funded restoration. Work is being done to create a new castle entrance. I think Newark has the only remaining sconce in the Uk, created to help defend the castle during the civil war. You missed the Governor's house which dates back to the 15th century and The Prince Rupert a great pub also built 15th century. Both are close to the market place and stunning buildings inside and out.

I love going to Newark, especially to the flying circus pub for a good pint & live bands. It's a shame the wetherspoons closed down but it is what it is I suppose, plenty more boozers to visit when I go.❤
the cannonball hole is obviously not original, the stone work was replaced and a hole was drilled in the stone to show where it was hit, the cannon ball would have caused more damage than just an hole.
The controversial monument to celibate Queen Elizabeth's jubilee - The jubilee arch - 5 years late being erected, an absolute eye sore in the minds of folks living here. Until a few years ago the town market was absolutely buzzing. Main market days Wednesday and Saturday.Lots of people would come from miles around. Many different types of stalls , clothing, dress making materials ,footwear and of course many fruit and veg stalls. Sadly it is just a shadow of what it was.
Aesthetically, it's beautiful. However, don't let it's beauty fool you, it was a hidious underbelly, when you can't have fireworks because the pyrotechnics are getting harrased by large groups of a young age, you know there's a problem. My block of flats for example, no matter what we do, these 'idiots' come in Graffiti the walls, drink on our indoor steps, whilst smoking their crack leaving everything behind, oh yeah, and taking the led from the roof to the point one side of the entire block is leaking rain water, to the point the fire alarms (already wappy) go wappier. This place has been left behind and theres nothing they can do to contol it

I’m from Newark, I don’t know what the home in the church was caused by but no way an English Civil War canon ball would have caused it. Wive’s tale
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed. Please consider like, subscribe and hitting the notification bell . Cheers again
I love going to Newark, especially to the flying circus pub for a good pint & live bands.
It's a shame the wetherspoons closed down but it is what it is I suppose, plenty more boozers to visit when I go.❤
I hear from a few subscribers that the Wetherspoons building is going to reopened, which is great to hear. Cheers for watching mate.
the cannonball hole is obviously not original, the stone work was replaced and a hole was drilled in the stone to show where it was hit, the cannon ball would have caused more damage than just an hole.
Thanks for watching Steven. Merry Christmas
It is a great place to live 😊
Totally agreed Juju..
Not totally true
@@codyjarrett9685 Thanks for watching Cody.
Its a jubilee piece of crap thing. . Next to library. Took them months to decide were to put
Nice one Michael. I wondered what it was.
The place boarded up was a wetherspoons 😢
Cheers Kris. Merry Christmas and thanks for watching.
@AbroadYorkshire merry Christmas 🎅

Well what can you say
We will defo be back in the summer mate, wonderful place !
The controversial monument to celibate Queen Elizabeth's jubilee - The jubilee arch - 5 years late being erected, an absolute eye sore in the minds of folks living here. Massively expensive, not in any way relevant to our former Queen! I seem to remember this being constantly in the local paper - The Newark Advertiser - as locals continually objected to the proposed sites for this thing. 😎
Cheers mate, I didn’t know that, so thanks for the info. I’m sure the viewers will appreciate it. Merry Christmas
A fair few pubs around. The navigation

@@Hardyfamily100 that sounds like something we’d play as kids..lol..
Aside from the historic buildings, the large marketplace gives it the feel of a soulless town with not much happening.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for taking the time to watch one of my videos .
Sadly the town died when Marks & Sparks closed. It’s weird because it was never a particularly busy shop but it did enough to draw people in. It’s now being redeveloped for mixed Retail & Resi
@@RogerNorman-q6x Lots of town centres suffered the same fate when the big retailers moved or closed Roger. But I must say, Newark is absolutely stunning. Abi Titmus, and a Happy New Year pal.
@@wendyholmes3445 That’s unfortunate Wendy. It really is a stunning place.
This place has been left behind and theres nothing they can do to contol it
Sorry to hear that Ethan. Most places are much the same these days. However, Newark really is stunning.
Newark castle…. “Don’t know it’s still here” 🤦🏻♂️ ffs. You can’t miss it melt.
It was still there when I went, Not sure I’d hang around to watch it melt though. Might take a while
Wetherspoons
Cheers again John. Thanks for watching pal.
Ive lived-worked in this shire nearly 50yrs beside afew yrs in Stoke, london& Bristol& Newarks as good as London for history +better for antiques than anywhere arguably. Maybe its many liberal 19th century leaders like Churchill "a liberal& a tory," helped keep it so well compared to many UK hubs & other less stable countries which struggle between far left&far right??, tory party& Labour keep us in the same 2 party, dog eat dog rut thou1000% better than any of the so called "independents" Ive ever come across yet😅
Hi John. Thanks for watching mate, I hope you enjoyed it and stick around for more. Merry Xmas buddy
