Nastia’s lines, flexibility and precision are what make her stand out as a gymnast, where Shawn was always trying new skills and tumbled hard on every event, they’re both perfect to me.

I don't think they ever had anything happen bad between them. I remember thinking that there was no gymnast that had as many advantages as Nastia between parents and body type but here comes this mini dynamo that gave her a real run for the money. I think Shawn made Nastia had to be perfect enough to beat the Russians and Romanians, they were both the best gymnasts in the world AND AMERICAN at the same moment, we are so luck to have seen it.
They are friends but she is NOT the God mother. Her life long friend Jackie is.

It’s crazy to me that Nastia is only 5’3”. She looks like 5’8” on TV and the way we all talk about her like she’s so tall, except she’s only tall by gymnast standards lol
Molly LeBrun shes not tall BUT she has long legs. Longer than her torso. And that makes her lines look better and her to look taller. Even tho she really isn’t 😂 its all on the legs! If you see she has a smaller body compared to legs

That's right. they made the CoP soo extreme now with deductions. What now is a 0.3-0.5 back then would be a 0.1-0.3. so it makes sense, the scoring right now.
Edit: And if we add the amount of artistry those gymnast show in their routines (specifically Nastia) the Execution scores are soo justified.
Exactly!!! That’s what the scoring system was at the time and people get mad at them for taking advantage of it. Each era of gymnastics is going to be different.
At that time they also counted the highest ten skills in a routine as well which made the start values higher.

there’s many comments about how all of the gymnasts scores are too high or over scored. There scoring system in 2008 where different then it’s like now and also if you see the starting value for some of the events for these 2 that really helps there score and just the difficulty of these routes. They wouldn’t purposely make the scores higher if a gymnast gets a deduction then there score will go down

Sean is a beautiful gymnast, hardworking, and dedicated. As an observer, she and Nastia are extraordinary. However, I love Nastia's fine lines and elegance. She makes every move look like a beautiful ballet performance. They are an amazing pair, with different yet very complimentary styles.
These girls are so freakin amazing, both have a style and talents all their own.
Even though Shawn didn't get the AA gold, I'm so happy she at least got the Beam gold to call her own.

This was a preview of the Olympics that year. It went down kind of the same way. Nastia took the lead on bars and solidified the lead on beam.
…Nastia was never…ever…better than Shawn on Beam…her only hope to come close to Shawn was on the UEBS…please stop with overstatements…
Shawn and Nastia have more difficulty and way less wobbly on beam than 2019 Stuggart World Cup gymnasts.

How did Nastia get a lower score than Shawn when she landed then only stepped out of bounds when Shawn lost her balance, fell, and was more out of bounds? I just don't understand😂 they're both great gymnasts i just noticed that
It is also about how difficult the vault is
+___just_ gianna___ The reason is the difficulty of the vaults. Nastia's difficulty value (D-score) was a mere 15.5 whereas Shawn's D-score was a huge 16.5. So even though Nastia only got 0.475 in deductions while Shawn got -1.325 in deduction, the total scores came out to be only about a tenth apart, with Shawn just in the lead.
Shawn did an entire extra twist.

Can someone explain to me how the scoring works in gymnastics?
Basically you have a difficulty score and the execution score. The difficulty score is composed out of the skills on each event, a full turn on balance beam gives 0.1 for example and additionally the connections between the skills. Then there's added the execution score. It starts at 10.0 and you get deductions for execution mistakes like crossed legs. I have to mention though that since this scoring system was relatively new in 2008 that every gymnast got overscored in execution and sometimes even difficulty as Shawn Johnson never really got her amanar fully around.

Arath Gomez back then, falls only used to be .5, and the amanar vault was worth 16.5 :)
Na...their not overscored, you must consider the difficulty level they begin with, watch the little extras like how clean Luikin's landings were in the floor. On her floor exercise she began in the lead, points began to go down, one may start with a 15.0, and go down, another may start with a 14.0 and go down. That gives you extra wiggle room, just in case you step out of bounds or take extra steps. That why even stepping out of bounds she can still win.
To all the commenters here, yes the scoring system was slightly different but that doesn’t make any of these scores anything but laughable. Most of our current deductions today existed then. Nastia loses .9 alone on the UB dismount, for example. Which means the judges thought there were no errors or deductions in the interior of that routine despite at least two .300 handstands on the low bar.

Why Valeri Liukin doesn’t train gymnasts like he did with Nastia? Tumbling and choregraphy, not just tumbling and ugly moves. That sport is called Artistic gymnastics.
The name of the sport is artistic gymnastics and that is what she did not all choreo is great but she did not get over scored nastia was the best no matter what you do think or say

I loved both girls but thought that both of them were really not as good in 08 as They could have been, they would not be able to stand up to the girls today

How does shown get an 8.675?! She falls -0.8, 3 big steps -0.9 and out off bounds -0.3. That's 2 full points just on the landing!

And a fall wasn't -0.8 back then...it was 0.5
@@amyfiltjens2530 Actually I'm pretty sure they upped the deduction for a fall to 0.8 in the 2006-8 COP, up from 0.5 in the perfect 10 system pre-2006.

I love watching these two! I just have one question though, I took the time to see what each of their scores were for each event, and Shawn had a better score on 3 out of 4 of the events... whereas Nastia only had a better score than Shawn on bars.... So how does this make Nastia come out as the winner? Im not a gymnast myself so I don't understand the scoring and deduction system so just wondered how the math adds up here.
Shawn and Nastia‘s vault score was almost the same, while Shawn’s bar score was nearly 1 whole point below nastias bar routine.
She was 16 and I was about 4 😂 but I love her and her husband they are so cute

Nastia's UB score was laughable. The more I watch that horrid, frog leg double front with half twist, the more I think the double layout had to be better than that, even with her height. That dismount has never once looked good for her.
Joey Lehman hater. She's one of the best bar workers ever and she could improve on her dismount, but her normal bar routine can score in the 17s!
