"Thrill" was the first official music video by Band-Maid. It literally saved the band from being broken up by their management company. The band chose "Thrill", the B-side of a record instead of the A-side which was "Love, Passion Matador". The rest is history. Now that you have reacted to their first video and their latest video hard rock release, I suggest to great videos that are almost universally loved by the Maidaics. Those two videos are "Moratorium", the official live video, and "Manners/Black Hole", the official live video (it's a two-fer video). These three songs really show Band-maid rock virtuosity and versatility.
One thing though. The management company can't break up the band because they didn't form the band. It formed organically. Miku was still under contract with that company because of Lil Cumin. Management simply agreed with Crown Stones that they wouldn't be pouring any more time and money into them if the label cut them.
The management company planned to form "Dancing Maids" with just Miku and Saiki who were both under contract with the company. Both Miku and Saiki said they cried at that proposition.

If you listen to Miku and Saiki's radio show, they literally say that management was going to break the band and keep only them and they cried when they found out.

It was Kanami who reached out to Akane with no-one's authorization or approval and asked her if she'd be interested. It was because of her need for employment at that precise moment in history that she was available and agreed before ever having been approved. And the exact same situation playing out as Akane reached out to her friend Misa. So no.... It's not nearly the same as a band being formed K-Pop style with tryouts being held with hundreds of applicants. Not to mention using the Internet to find potential band mates in the modern era is commonplace. Its how the last 2 bands I was in found each other and were formed. It's about as organic as it gets outside of starting in a garage as middle school friends.
@Studio-Coast_Kid It was an awesome coincidence that Kanami knew Akane and she, in turn, knew MISA. That would have been meaningless if the management would have deemed that one or two or the three of them weren't suited for the band. They even had the banner prepared for auditions, so basically it was going to be pop style. Why would you assume that a management firm would let a 21 year old from a failed idol group form a band on their own without oversight and vetoing power is beyond me. You don't need to romanticize the story. It's not a garage band and there's nothing wrong with that. What matters is they're great musicians.
Thanks for the reaction and comments. It's hard to believe that Miku(band founder/vocals/rhythm guitar/lyricist) didn't even know how to play the guitar back then. They are arguably the best live rock band on the planet. They have so many great songs, I'd run out of real estate trying to list them all here. My recommendation is to stick with their official music/live videos, pick one at random, and react to it. It's more fun that way. Anyway, looking forward to the next video. Cheers!

Did you know The Warning and BAND-MAID just recorded and performed a song together? Not kidding - really just happened earlier this month. The Warning spent a couple weeks in Japan at the Maids invitation, hung out together, and wrote and recorded “Show Them” then they had a joint concert where they performed it together as the show closer. Folks are saying it’s the best show they’ve ever been to. Can you imagine these two incredible bands performing together!! One of The Warning cree recorded it on their phone and released it - obviously against the rules and will of the Publishing Company (and probably the bands & their management too - as they filmed a short teaser snippet and released that on the official Band-Maid social media accounts). Regardless, it’s an awesome song and joyous performance!!
The song that many of us that have followed the band for a long time was our introduction to the band. One reason it has so many views (besides the fact that it's a great song) is that it's the oldest/first MV they ever did. It's a great starting off point for you (Hate? notwithstanding), so why not keep it more or less chronological so you can follow their ascent into musical greatness? I recommend the official LIVE version of Real Existence for your next one. I also recommend, whether they have subtitles or not, for you to read the lyrics first, and then watch without paying attention to the words. Why? Because pretty soon you'll be utterly unable to focus on the brilliance of their musicianship and what is going on with the music. There is a LOT going on in most of their music!
Band-Maid is a force to be reckoned with! I am sure people gave you some info in the other video, but they have been melting faces for over ten years! I highly recommend the videos Domination - Live, or Freedom - Live! Those let's you see some of their personalities and how they interact with each other. OR if you want a really cruchy rock song, the MV for Dice is AMAZING! OR if you want some good o'le rock and roll attitide with crashing cars, Warning! is a great MV! But you really can't go wrong with anything you pick. Enjoy the pigeon hole! ;-)
The song that got them going ,and saved the band. Miku (rhythm guitar/vocals/primary songwriter) didn't even really know how to play the guitar back then, she barely touches it in this video. Lead guitarist , Kanami, has since helped her learn.
Back then, the original paradigm for the band was for two front women, both walking around on mics. There's live footage right after this release and Miku is playing guitar on about half of the songs. Just not this one as she walked around with her mic. So the idea that she wasn't playing yet appears to be a well repeated myth in the community.

It's only most popular because it's the oldest. Most people's favorite BAND-MAID song is the last one they heard. Give the others time. But they were under a label contract by this point, and had this Music Video not gone viral They were going to fire the musicians and turn the two singers into DANCE-MAID. Miku and Saiki cried, "We did not come to Tokyo for this!" But all's well that ends well.
It's Band-Maid's most popular video simply because it's their oldest video and the Maidiacs love it because "Thrill" saved Band-Maid from being broken up by their management. They had released an EP that wasn't charting and then released a single on which "Thrill" was the B-side. The A-side was a pleasant and sweet acoustic love song, but it wasn't the direction the band wanted to go. Management was going to break up the band but had already paid for a video shoot for the single. Band-Maid went to the video shoot unaware that they were already cancelled. When they arrived they told the production crew they were going to do "Thrill" instead of the A-side; because that's what THEY wanted. The video for "Thrill" went viral and Band-maid's management changed their minds, got them a better record deal, that was in 2014, and the rest is history. The Maids found out about how close they were to being "written off" years later and it's been suggested that they wrote the song "I Still Seek Revenge" when they heard about it.

You just bookended our MAIDs. Thrill was the introduction to the band over 10 years ago for many fans, Hate? is becoming the new standard for introducing new fans to the band, and their latest. You have a lot of ground to cover in between ;) .

Just kwik heads up. This song is perhaps the most famous or highest view count not because it is regarded as their best song musically, but more so because out of respect for what it represents symbolically to us fans. This is a B-side to an EP that they fought their MGMT to push over the A-side which MGMT favored. It ended uo being a crucial watershed moment for the band as (unknown to the band) had it been unsuccessful, would have been disbanded. It instead ended up going viral on a small J-Rock Facebook music page, so much so, the band had thought their account had been hacked. Thus saving what has become for many of us, our favorite band. So Thrill = Respect Plus, its as good as anything Motley Cru ever put out!

The song that got them going ,and saved the band. Miku (rhythm guitar/vocals/primary songwriter) didn't even really know how to play the guitar back then, she barely touches it in this video. Lead guitarist , Kanami, has since helped her learn.
Back then, the original paradigm for the band was for two front women, both walking around on mics. There's live footage right after this release and Miku is playing guitar on about half of the songs. Just not this one as she walked around with her mic. So the idea that she wasn't playing yet appears to be a well repeated myth in the community.
Great reaction and the MV that went around the world in a couple weeks and saved the band. This song set the direction that they would take in their song writing and performances. Thanks for reacting to Band-Maid.

I don't know of any other band where the fans' playlists differ so much. So, this is just a quite random selection of songs: For some very special live videos try Freedom, Play, Real existence and Endless Story. With Moratorium (Live at Zepp), Rinne (MV) and Dice you can hear more hard rock while more catchy songs are Choose me (MV), Bestie (MV) and Alone (MV). It's only most popular because it's the oldest. Most people's favorite BAND-MAID song is the last one they heard. Give the others time. But they were under a label contract by this point, and had this Music Video not gone viral They were going to fire the musicians and turn the two singers into DANCE-MAID. Miku and Saiki cried, "We did not come to Tokyo for this!" But all's well that ends well.
It's Band-Maid's most popular video simply because it's their oldest video and the Maidiacs love it because "Thrill" saved Band-Maid from being broken up by their management. They had released an EP that wasn't charting and then released a single on which "Thrill" was the B-side. The A-side was a pleasant and sweet acoustic love song, but it wasn't the direction the band wanted to go. Management was going to break up the band but had already paid for a video shoot for the single. Band-Maid went to the video shoot unaware that they were already cancelled. When they arrived they told the production crew they were going to do "Thrill" instead of the A-side; because that's what THEY wanted.
The video for "Thrill" went viral and Band-maid's management changed their minds, got them a better record deal, that was in 2014, and the rest is history. The Maids found out about how close they were to being "written off" years later and it's been suggested that they wrote the song "I Still Seek Revenge" when they heard about it.
I was kinda hoping they would bring back the miniskirts for a show or two during the tenth anniversary tour.

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

You just bookended our MAIDs. Thrill was the introduction to the band over 10 years ago for many fans, Hate? is becoming the new standard for introducing new fans to the band, and their latest. You have a lot of ground to cover in between ;) .

Had this song not clicked (literally) BAND-MAID would not be. It did, so we have the best live rock band on the planet.
Just kwik heads up. This song is perhaps the most famous or highest view count not because it is regarded as their best song musically, but more so because out of respect for what it represents symbolically to us fans.
This is a B-side to an EP that they fought their MGMT to push over the A-side which MGMT favored. It ended uo being a crucial watershed moment for the band as (unknown to the band) had it been unsuccessful, would have been disbanded. It instead ended up going viral on a small J-Rock Facebook music page, so much so, the band had thought their account had been hacked. Thus saving what has become for many of us, our favorite band.
So Thrill = Respect
