Thrill is about 10 years old now.
The band has growen soooo, much since these days. BandMaid is the epitome of the Japanese culture, there are no stand out performers. Sometimes you see the bassist, MISA do a short solo, almost always Kanami will follow with a short guitar riff. Akane does a phenomenal drum solo in "Freedom." But they never try to out shine thier peers. Watch anything live and you will get blown away by thier talent. Further Miku, the secound vocalist did not know how to play a guitar at the time of this video. The band decided she looked odd standing there in the background alone while Siaki sang, so they gave her a guitar to "hold" Miku said if I'm going to hold a guitar. I'm going to learn to play one. She practiced 10 to 12 hours a day until she could match the talent level of band.

Funny enough that’s how MISA became a bass player too.
In high school a friend’s band needed a bassist so she moved from guitar to bass.
She’s an amazing bassist and the band knows it, so she’s featured on a lot of their songs.

Welcome aboard, John. You are embarking on (along with many others - 158 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (124 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): ruclips.net/video/7LB_EPS48HE/видео.html)
And many songs are represented with over 40 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” ruclips.net/video/nAdWnIRjGak/видео.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” ruclips.net/video/-qQnKILR5u0/видео.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 (Full concerts from the last two songs are on bandmaidprime.tokyo and DVD/BD/CD)
And some of the better quality 2022 US tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s one of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 And by Wave Potter with their last 2022 US tour OKYU-JI concert in Chicago: ruclips.net/video/R9BcFwZz3cc/видео.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 28 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 31 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 31 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 31 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 30 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2022 US tour just wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!!

The greatest rock band in the world right now! I just had the distinct pleasure of seeing these ladies live a week ago in Chicago and they rocked! You have to see and hear them live to completely understand their overwhelming awesomeness. I recommend checking out any of their official live videos, but really any of their songs will showcase their immense talent. The live video most people recommend to new Band-Maid listeners is "Domination", but I also love "Freedom", "Real Existence", and "Onset". My favorite is probably "Puzzle" but there's no official video for it on RUclips although there is a great live video on Bilibili. I look forward to following your journey down the pigeon-hole Po!

They are such a breath of fresh air. So talented, zero egos. Watch their live interactions, their so kind to one another. They're even friends away from the band and often hang out together. Pretty unique for a band, IMO. Between Band Maid, Lovebites and BabyMetal, Japan is carrying the torch. Also, carry the torch from NA, are The Warning. 3 sisters from Mexico are amazing.

Domination LIVE is often the most recommended next step. Manners/Black Hole live double feature is great for demonstrating part of their range at least. Onset (instrumental) live or their latest instrumental From Now On shows off Kanami on lead that you only get short blasts of in their regular songs. Their catalogue is very deep, 120 or so songs and I haven't found a bad one yet.

Heh heh heh... welcome to the Bamd-Maid rabbit hole. MISA is the bass player, Akane on drums, Kanami on lead guitar, Saiki lead vocals, and Miku is the band's founder on guitar and vocals. If you are like many of us, every new song is a new favorite. Although they are much better live, the omv for Dice is a *gentle* next step. But really you can't go wrong with any of them. Some say Domination Live, but I think its better to work up to that. Buckle up, dude. It's gonna be a jourmey!

So, that was a really early video, they've developed a lot since then. The second vocalist can now play the guitar she was simply holding,... and play pretty well. The lead guitar writes all their music now (not then) and the drummer has grown into a monster. The lead vocalist has taken lots of lessons and developed healthy technique, and the bass player, well she just gets better. Check out the live performance of Domination (Official Live Video) from their last concert before COVID. Also, the Blooming MV or my current favorite the From Now On MV (here's a link for it ruclips.net/video/pN_wg8UAz9A/видео.html ). They have dozens more on line.

Yes, they were ahead of the curve. Not sure what you can even compare them to in American rock. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative.
You are going to get a lot of suggestions. I'm subscribing just to see you dive into this rabbit hole. Problem is most of the links get taken down pretty fast. These are a bunch that are official or unlikely to come down. First, a little background on the girls:
Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 28 years old
MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 29 years old
Kanami Tono - Lead guitar Composer and main arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 30 years old
Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 30 years old
Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 31 years old
Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual solo.
Next, you have to listen to them live. They are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio.

Their agency was going to disband them after this final recording, BUT the MV got 2 million views in 2 weeks on Facebook. Forcing a change in plans.
Miku (rhythm guitar, lyricist , spoke's pigeon) founded the band in 2013, first recruit was Kanami,(lead Guitar, composer) followed by Akane (drums) and MISA (bass). It was then decided that Miku's voice was too soft to front a rock band so they tricked Saiki into joining the band. Also they needed a fuller sound so rather than getting another member Miku said she would learn to play the guitar only if Kanami would be her sensei.
Oh, they call their maid costumes their Battle Armor!!
45% of the Facebook views were from the US and Europe and their biggest fan base today is the US and Europe. They have been touring in both since 2016 and just finished up their sold-out 13 city US tour and now are touring Japan with Guns and Roses.
There're 200+ Rock/Metal bands in Japan with about half all female. Japan today is the creative center of rock/metal with most talented , skilled and professional musicians and singers anywhere.
Next for Band Maid - "Freedom" live and "Influencer" official studio MV.

I know this is a very, very late comment on this reaction but, you are right, there are those bass players who are originally guitarists who seek being in a worthy band. For example, Jimi Hendrix's English bass player "Noel Redding" was a guitarist who really wanted to make it as a front man guitarist. That said, Jimi's other bassist, Billy Cox, was a bass player - period.

This was their very first Music Video from way back in 2014 a year after they formed. If it hadn't gone viral their label was going to drop them. Miku could not play guitar at all when they started. She found Kanami through her guitar videos online. Kanami had played before in a project with Akane on drums. Akane attended the Tokyo School of Music with MISA. They worked well together, but Miku had always envisioned BAND-MAID with duel vocals. She decided to drop back from lead vocals, since she didn't really have a Hard Rock voice, and they found Saiki working at the same Agency as them. Them Miku began taking guitar lessons from Kanami and the lineup was set.

This 2014 video was the make-it-or-break-it video for Band Maid. At this point Miku couldn't play the guitar since she thought she was only going to be a vocalist in the band. However this video did so well due to exposure in foreign markets, that it was decided that Band-Maid was going to be a successful project and that gave them the financial wherewithal to get started. This is before MISA and Saiki started dressing Gothic. Band-Maid is Jimmy Page approved!

I am thoroughly impressed by your observational powers. You saw the drummer, bass, the one real guitarist (even though Miku was holding a guitar, she could not really play it well at the time of this video), and two vocalists. You even called it by noting the bass player, MISA, was something else. I respect ability, and I can see you clearly know your stuff. Instant subscription from me!
Fast forward to today, regarding the vocalist who could not play the guitar (her name is Miku Kobato) - well she is now endorsed by Zemaitis. That should give you a clue as to what happened in this band. Go check out their later music videos, especially their official live performances. I am sure that as a musician yourself, you would want to see how they handle themselves on the stage.
Keep up the good work, Mr John Reaves!

Welcome to the world of the MAIDIACS!
THRILL was BAND MAIDS first song from 2013. Same band, same ladies, same THRILL of a band. Watch the MISA (aka the barefoot Assasin!) the bass player's guitar. She has 2 Jimi Hendrix stickers on it. It is a sign to her mother who loved Jimi Hendrix.
A quick version of how BAND MAID was created - MIKU (rhythm guitarist - Rickenbacker writes the lyrics) worked at a Maid Café in Akihabara Japan before starting BAND MAID
MIKU found KANAMI (lead guitarist - writes the music) by chance watching RUclips videos KANAMI was making
KANAMI thought MIKU was a strange girl - but without any reluctance she joined with MIKU and thought the maid uniforms were cute while playing the rock music.
KANAMI contacted AKANE as the drummer
AKANE contacted MISA as they had gone to music school together
MISA was hesitant to join as she was not into the maid outfits.
Changes to the outfits were made for MISA (KANAMI writes the music with input from MISA and AKANE)
MIKU thought here voice "lacked potency" she says "I want more coolness" so she went looking for another singer to do twin vocals.
Saiki joined around 1 month later
Also, from a radio interview - - (Chris): What amazed me most about your play style is the changing of picking to slapping, and then picking again so smoothly. Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right?
(Misa): No, I don't throw my pick away. I have become better as I practiced. For the recent 2-3 years, I haven't lost any pick.
    (Chris): Show me how.
(Misa): I keep the pick with my index finger and palm.
(Chris): Then you slap the bass with your thumb and middle finger? Can you show me how you play? (then Misa shows how)
(Misa): Because I've been practicing these days, I can change faster than ever.
(Chris): You are mixing them up! That's awesome!
(Misa): I think anybody can do it if you practice.
Misa - BASS GUITAR plays Black Cloud "Smoker" and Privat Reserve (SG Style) bass - Orange AB200B MKIII Amps
When you watch Domination - replay it slowly and you will see MISA switch exactly as she explained it in the interview.

4:33 "They just randomly joined the band. We asked them if they played guitar and they learned."
What's funny is that did happen . . . soft of.
Miku, with the twin tails, put the band together and was originally the lead singer. After a few practices, she and the rest of the band came to the consensus that her voice wasn't quite strong enough for the style of rock they wanted to play. They brought in Saiki on lead vocals and decided Miku would learn how to play guitar. So, Miku took lessons from Kanami (lead guitarist) and learned on the job, how to play. If you watch the video a bit more closely you'll notice Miku isn't really playing her Rickenbacker, yet. Fast forward 9 years, and she has her own signature model guitar by Zemaitis, A24MF-FP, or the "Flappy Pigeon". 🕊 Check it out, it's gorgeous.

“Thrill” is their first single/video released and got the ball rolling for Band Maid. The bassist - Misa, lead guitarist- Kanami, & Akane - drums, all studied music which is taken seriously in Japan. Miku - rhythm guitar/vocals, she founded the band and writes lyrics. Saiki- lead singer was the final member to join. Since “Thrll” they’ve become much better, and you’ll have plenty of great music from the maids to choose from.

Domination, Freedom, Onset, are the standard choices to start,.. then you can start exploring some of their other stuff. Real Existence, Puzzle, Moratorium. Any of their newer stuff is great too. Sense, Unleash, Influencer. From Now On is a killer instrumental (no video on youtube right now but the audio is there) Their sound signature is hard to classify... we often say they are their own style.. BAND-MAID. I think MISA, the bassist, started playing bass because that was the position open on a band she was asked to join. Before that she played guitar, before that a horn instrument, and started out on piano. The running meme is that MISA plays lead bass, due to her prominence in their music.

    • @JohnReavesLive

Yes, since Miku's guitar was just an ornament at first, MISA took over that area which would have been for the rhythm guitar. As Miku's skilled increased and started taking over that area, there were still times where Miku had some heavy vocal work to do and COULDN'T play and sing at the same time. MISA to the rescue again.
Now MISA's bass is such an integral part of the Band-Maid sound, if MISA ever just played the back line like bassists in other bands, it wouldn't be a Band-Maid song.

    • @greylocke100
      @greylocke100 Год назад +4

@@hyena535 In part one of MISA's interview with Chris Peppler, MISA states that she played guitar in Junior High School and played guitar and sang for her first half a year or year of High School. She didn't start to play Bass until her second year of High School when she was asked by an upper classman. She at first used a bass owned by that upper classman, it wasn't until halfway through her senior year she started playing like Smashing Pumpkins and grunge. So Please, edit your comment. We do not need to be arguing in the comment sections.
