I feel like the song more applies to the Mavericks of this game. For them, this is evolution, gaining their own independence, and not going with the status quo like the Maverick Hunters are. For Lumine in the others, it's about awakening the freedom they've always had inside them, which was restricted by certain rules, such as not being allowed to attack humans if they wanted to. And while I don't think X8 wanted you to sympathize with them, I think it at least wanted you to see their point. Rebellion, uprising, "Megaman X 8 : Paradise Lost" fits the game perfectly.
I have a theory this song is basically either sung from the point of view of Sigma (though probably not because he's dead for real by X8), the "will" of the maverick virus (where the lyrics are the thoughts the virus makes a reploid think), or Lumine, reflecting that the "New Generation" reploids can go maverick "at will"/without the virus, and this is him "convincing" other reploids to choose the maverick path.

Definitely the best game in the X series. I haven't played X5, but as much as people say it's this and that, I don't see anything that special on it. X8 on the other hand had some badass rock tracks, Axl and his cocky personality plus awesome weaponry, armors for the entire trio, beautiful 2.5D graphics... I don't really care about whoever says X6 - 8 were the worst, X8 remains my favorite in that series. And this song is bloody amazing. And the lyrics were perfect for the Maverick Hunters.
I agree with you, X8 is great, they made it as a masterpiece and I say the same for X5 (because they wanted to end X series in X5, with Zero's death, so they could launch Megaman Zero series); I, myself can't say which one is better X5 or X8, both are my favorite games.
