If one thinks about it, X3 really is a more major end of an era, because it is the end of X's hero-journey in this new world. After that, even tho he obviously still remains a key character in things, the focus shifts a lot more towards Zero and/or their partnership until X6, where it starts shining the spotlight more on the narrative and thematics rather than the characters.(X7 obviously screwed its part up majorly, but that's another topic entirely)
