    I am an application specialist for an overhead screen door company. Everything on this video makes perfect sense. Thank you. One thing that I had to make a tweak for is our application of the high lift calculation where our upper vertical tilts back 30 degrees. On a small amount it was horseshoes and hand grenades close enough and go with the regular high lift. On larger lifts the springs were running out of steam. We decided that the 30 degree tilt was adding 15 percent length to the upper vertical and should be reflected in the spring calculation, drums and cable length. For instance, a 14' high door with 120" of high lift tilted at 30 degrees would have springs that were calculated at 138" of high lift, the drums selected would be 164 HL and to cut the cables correctly in the field the we reinterpreted the calculation to be - Floor to shaft plus 181" minus cable lift. And then we define this strange term "cable lift" as the distance from the top roller to the bottom of the curve. We have achieved balance now for these larger high lifts tilted at 30 degrees.     I have faith in torsion springs its amazing how they work for thousands of cycles and be under mostly maximum tension given garage doors are closed in the downward postion for most of there life...............the physics of spring steel is amazing

    Thanks Guys, Patch worked perfectly. I did zip tie a rubber boot around it in case it ever slipped off and went airborne. I also used nylon locking nuts on the chain link part.

    I've been doing doors for about 8 years and I've clamped plenty of Springs I prefer the Box clamp but you did give me a good tip Using the ranch to keep it spread I always used a tiny pry bar but I like your idea much better thank you

    Fun video guys! Thanks for sharing. It is not often that you can watch a spring break. As you said the repair is temporary and sure it's a little funky looking and you've probably had a few break a second time upon rewinding, but to get some one a few cycles while another spring is made up or ordered it is generally a very helpful trick. We've sometimes used a second cable clamp on a big spring just to be sure, but one may have held by itself. Still trying to figure out how to get the clamp inside a rolling steel barrel.
    Looks like more than tens of dollars. :) You obviously have a lot of experience with these doors.

      We pull the spring on a rolling steel and actually weld the spring back together, this will usually get a customer by until springs come on in.

    @D84D Putting it back together was just a temporary fix. Springs have a rated lifespan, like 10,000 cycles. I've seen subdivisions where all the homes were built in the same year and all the springs break around the same time. You need to replace the spring. They aren't that expensive.

    @roymg No. The last few coils on each end are not "active" coils. They don't contract like the active coils do. Springs come in like ten foot lengths, so they have to cut them to length and bend the ends just like this at the factory. But if you did this in the middle of the spring it would break very soon after.

    Do not attempt to replace a torsion spring yourself. They can be under a tremendous amount of tension and the force that they can break with can cause serious or even fatal injuries. Even an extension spring can be dangerous. Many do-it yourselfers can replace extension springs, but make sure to have the right equipment and the knowledge before attempting to replace extension springs. If in doubt, call in a professional.

    Hi William, Thanks for your quick response to my dilemma. Apparently some attic stairs are manufactured with turnbuckles, but mine (made by Werner from Home Depot) is not. One end of the spring is attached to a metal plate (that is screwed into the attic floor joist) at the top of the unit. It has a "J" hook attached to it, that the spring hooks onto. The other end of the spring, hooks onto another "J" hook. It is attached to a metal plate attached to the sidewall, which is screwed another attic floor joist. This part of the spring is also attached to the stair arms that lower the stair. Again, with the stair in the up position the spring still must be pulled from 10" to 20 ". I can pull it 1 inch!       +Aristotle Matsis I can probably tell you how they did it at the factory... remember when the stairs are down the spring is stretched to the max, and when the stairs are up the spring is stretched the least. But there is still some tension on the springs to keep the stairs in the up position. You would have to get the stairs up well past the up position to get the spring fully relaxed. But that would probably entail removing the stairs and disassembling, drilling out rivets, etc... More adventurous fellows would use a come-along to stretch the spring but it is extremely dangerous.

    Ok since i have been in the garage door business for 31 years, torsion springs are NO JOKE!!! people beware of the extreme danger when it does break. Also at 1:13 of the video, you can clearly see the marks left by a grinder, as they cut it to make it more apt to break. The first 4 wire have the mark of it. Also as a garage door repairman, i have used cable clamp for an emergency fix on torsion springs, when you have no springs with you and the door has to work, but replaced it the next day. A broken torsion spring means that it has passed it's life cycle and needs to be replaced, if you have 2, 3 or 4 springs on the door, you should replace them all. A repairman might tell you that you do not have too, true, but when he comes back 2 weeks later to replace the next, charges you another service call for it, then you will understand. For residential home owners get torsion springs with a 25K or 50K life cycle, then you will never replace them in your life time, Commercial and industrial doors should go for 50K to 100K minimum cycles, the difference for the price is minimal compared to replacement of them every 5 to 10 years.

      I've actually returned to a customer's house 10 days later to replace his second spring, after he refused to let me "up sell" a second spring the first time I was there. Considering there were two luxury cars in this garage, some people are just cheap.

      High cycle springs on commercial doors are very massive and heavy. The spring will be loud and clunky as the shaft rotates. The added weight and "lobing" of a high cycle spring puts excessive weight on the shaft which will wear out the center and end bearings prematurely - eventually cutting into the shaft. Point of the story: with high cycle springs your shaft and bearings will require service before the spring breaks. Servicing these parts of the door requires dis-assembly of the spring system anyway..... Just provide your customer with 10,000 cycle springs and replace bearings when the spring breaks.

    ive had one of these springs break on me while i was placing tension with my winding bars. good thing i was wearing goggles. you got to invent a way to place tension on these springs from the ground. especial for 20ft high sectional doors

    This is a great demonstration of the destructive force of torsion springs, but it should be made much more clear that these springs are VERY dangerous and untrained people (typical home owners) should NEVER attempt these types of repairs on their own!!!

    I must be missing something. Testing the breaking point of a garage door torsion spring seems useless. The forces required to break one would never be achieved in a real-life situation. They fail as a result of repeated cycles...not one acute, overloaded situation.

      The test could/is testing the limits of the spring under poor maintenance conditions , such as seized roller bearings or unintended weight added to the door, crimped or damaged guide rails, etc.

      +kz6fittycent If you have all of that welding equipment and a location to do it in then you are not poor. However, if you do not go to amazon and purchase the springs for $30.00 dollars PLUS the winding bars for another 10 you would be foolish.

    Thank you William, I am an amateur in home repairs. I'll keep trying the garage repair guys (two turned me down). If that doesn't work, I am probably better off swapping it out with a new one.     Commercial springs come in thousands of sizes, and are impossible to stock. A lot of customers cannot wait two or three days for a replacement spring.

    a lot of spring breaks are caused by occlusions in the metal , not from cycle life .....if you examine the break , the pit is obvious .....still has to be repaired ...great videos ,btw

    This is only a temporary repair. I use 2 clambs instead of only 1. More safe and the rapair of the spring will be more strong and will not bend sideways.

    I fixed a broken spring on my dads single car garage. I just took the broken piece out (about 1/3) used the remaining piece. Everything worked fine that was in 85-86'. Well now on my house, a double car garage door the same thing happened. So I tried the same thing. Took out the broken piece, agian about 1/3rd and kept the rest. Could not get it to roll up. It binds badly and the motor/opener wants to dang near take itself down and start bending. I was hoping for the same easy fix. ?????

    They make spring repair blocks with 2 holes in them and set screws that holds each spring wire. Way safer than this. Either one is a mickey mouse job. Spring will break again very quickly as the spring has gone past its rated cycles. The door may come falling down damage the motor mechanism or the door panels, replace with new springs only.

      +Sam Tuinei Just look for some heavy-ish duty U-bolts with clamps. I, personally, am one to suggest leaving torsion springs to professionals because they are exceptionally dangerous.

    Dear William, I have an attic stair spring that came off its hook. It is impossible to stretch. It is 10" long and about 3/4 in diameter. It must be stretched to about 22". Closing the attic stair door and working on it in the attic, doesn't bring the hook and spring much closer. Any advice would be much appreciated. Werner, the manufacturer wouldn't even respond to my email to offer any help.

      +Aristotle Matsis There should be a threaded turnbuckle to adjust the spring tension. When the stairs are stowed away (up) the springs are under the least tension. Loosen the turnbuckle as much as possible, and put the spring back on with the stairs in the stowed position, or as close to stowed as possible where you can still get to the springs. You will still have to stretch them, but not nearly as much as when the stairs are down. You will definitely need two people and two ladders.

      always replace both as they are calculated for cycles and will usually be close to end of life if one breaks, or it was just a bad spring

      Oiling is used to reduce friction between two surfaces. Using oil on spring will not make change. Using the correct spring is the solution.

      So is it a good idea to cover the springs? Say PVC Pipe. The flying debris is why the Dalton springs(enclosed) seem like a nice idea.

      Wayne Dalton torquemaster springs are more dangerous than regular exterior springs and I’ll explain why. When one of the torquemaster springs break usually the home owner doesn’t know it right away because the spring is not visible. And because the doors are usually so light the motor may continue to operate the door for a while. If you pull the red rope to release the door from the motor and the door is open even a little bit then the door could come crashing down causing damage or injury. Since the spring is inside the tube often times you don’t know it’s broke. That’s one reason I prefer regular torsion springs. It’s extremely rare for a regular torsionspring to have any pieces of spring leave the tube when they break. Extension springs are a different story. Torquemaster springs last about 5-7 years which is not good at all.

    ive had customers with broken arms and or very bad cuts ,holes in hands or arms its not worth the risk just pay a pro if ur cheep then go standard 1000-3000 cycle but rember just like everything else you get what you pay for!!!!!!!

    I don't get it, if it's a customers spring, why not replace it rather than have them pay twice. The spring will still break just in a different spot. With all the labor involved in the clamp, you could have already changed out the spring for a new one & not have to bother with it for another 7 to 10 years

    The spring didn't break from overwinding, it broke because the winding cone was fixed which caused the wire to bind up while being tensioned.,

      Yes, it was from overwintering the spring. All torsion spring systems operate the same way, there is a stationary end and a winding end. When the door is open, there is almost no tension on the springs. As the door closes, the cables pull on the torsion shaft, winding up the springs. The exact same thing happened on the dyno here, however it was turned to 14 turns when it broke, when it's only designed to operate at about 10 turns.

      Correct. When winding a spring the set screws are not tightened down so the spring won't bind like it did. I don't even think that spring wound 10 times which that spring is more than capable of for a 14' tall door

      You are correct, when you wind a spring it grows in length! I wind them daily , when i get the correct amount of winds i stretch the spring 1/8" to 1/4" depending on wire size before tightening the set screws to prevent from binding/chafing. Nice catch, did not see anyone else mention it..

    thats silly it would not work correctly without the spring the spring is made and factors like wire size spring size and length all work together to give the right amount of torque at any point during the door going up and down so cutting the spring is a bad idea and if you have a motor will put more strain on the motor causing you a more expensive repair in the long run ...call a door company and let them fix it please for my jobs sake dont fix your own door its dangerous

    It would have been interesting if you would have left a winding bar in place to see if it would have been launched into low earth orbit...or at least to the next Zip Code 😄😄😄. As everyone knows, a broken spring will be restrained by the center rod. A winding rod, not so much 😟😟😟😱😱😱.

    First off, he is repairing a commericial spring not residential. Please if you do not know what you are doing call a garage door guy. Most areas have same day service and if they are a good company they will have the correct spring for your door on the truck. Clamping the spring together is not a smart idea and should be left to someone who know what they are doing, even then it is a temperary fix!!

    Good idea until the spring breaks again before you get back with the new spring and the door comes down on some thing or some one and you lose every thing in cuort . Go back to the shop and get the spring and do it right the first time , cheaper for the customer and keeps you out of court .

      I've had torsion springs replaced twice in 20 years, each side once. The repair service never recommended replacing both at once, nor did they even suggest that long-life springs were available, or I would have demanded the better springs. On the other hand, it's not a big deal if one's car is outside, but if the spring fails with the car in the garage and one needs the car to get to work today or tomorrow, waiting for the service to obtain the better springs isn't a real option.

      In industrial doors we have gone upto and sometimes past 1million. It utilizes multiple torsion tubes with chain and sprockets connecting them. And springs inside of springs. Up to 3, called triplex springs

    You guys are suicidal putting that patch on. For Pete's sake they make a patch designed for springs. And secondly that is pushing the limits for one patch. really should have two patch blocks.

      Patch worked perfectly. I did put a rubber boot around it in case it ever slipped off and went airborne.
