This video was extremely helpful. I would recommend releasing tension in the system before replacing a broken door cable. Takes a bit more time to retention everything, but takes risk out from the door twisting or getting off track.

This is a great tutorial. I never knew about tapping the spring to let it stretch out so thanks for that. I had a really bad garage door install on a newly built house house a few years back (two 2-car garages and one 1-car garage. Both 2-car garages had issues from day one and while under warranty the first year, they came out to 'fix it' a few times but on the last call, the tech gave me a full tutorial on how to replace the broken springs and how to tension them like your video (minus the stretching). After the warranty expired and one of the garage doors fell on top of my Land Cruiser (no damage due to Con-ferr roof rack on top), turns out the two tracks had no 'angle-bracket' welded along the length of it for rigidity so they twisted and the wheel shaft pulled out. The other 2-car garage door did have the angle bracket... go figure. In hindsight, I bet they used a non-reinforced door track intended for the single door on my double door. I had to take door panels apart and piece it back together after I welded on new angle brackets I got from scrap pieces at work. I've become an expert door installer homeowner ever since. My hats off to the real pro's who do this for a living and hope nobody ever runs into a builder who has people who don't know what they're doing.
Sure sounds like you’ve been through it at this point unfortunately. However you’re better off for it now and so long as you’re careful I’m sure you’ll be able to fix just about anything with a garage door at this point haha. When I installed my garage door new , I drew a line across the spring with a soap stone. The book said to count the line windings at 7 spiral windings. Works great. 7” x 16” door.

I just got an estimate for $420 for two springs. I purchased the springs for $120 from Amazon and they came with the two rods for tensioning.
Someone just tried to charge me 225 and I had them replace my spring 4 months ago. They forgot to tighten it. So they wanted me to pay an additional 150 for their mistake. The guy they sent out felt sorry for me and did it for free. It took him 5 minutes.

Thanks for the video! I was using 3/8 extensions to tension the spring, got a bit sketchy at 25 turns so I quit lol. You really need 1ft bars at least. It doesn't quite float at 1/2 height, starts to drop. But the garage door opener can deal with that no problem.

Hi, very interesting video and Thank you for posting! I got a double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I follwed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you
In this case my advice is to call someone out to be completely honest. It’s worth the couple hundred for the peace of mind. I don’t enjoy those super heavy doors myself 😅

Any idea why the end collar for the spring doesn’t move when the bolts are loosened completely? It moves a 1/4 turn, but no more, in either direction. The other side works fine (I have two springs).
Sometimes the bar gets warped a bit when the set screws are over tightened. Hammer and Lube should do the convincing you need. If you’re unsure though you can send me a photo and I can try to see if it’s something else? (: (garagedoorguidance @ yahoo )
My garage torsion spring broke after 18+ years, so I ordered another spring using the SAME SIZE shown on the broken spring. Installed it on my 8ft door which requires 33 to 34 turns. I’m up to around 45 quarter turns and when I lift the door halfway it falls to the floor. I noticed that this new spring did not expand out as far as the previous spring. It’s about 3-eighth inch short of the indentation mark of the old spring. Should I do 33 quarter turns and tap spring to stretch it out to the old spot on the shaft?

If you have two springs (both without tension), do you just do one and then the other? Do you do half the number of turns per spring or should both be 4 quarter turns per foot of door height?

If my springs are tensioned, but they aren’t tensioned enough ( my garage door doesn’t stay up without supporting it). Can I just add more tension to both springs? Or do I need to remove all the tension first, and start from scratch? My door is 8ft and has two springs.
You can try to add some but there is a chance you don’t even have the correct ones to begin with, did this just start happening ? When’s the last time the springs were replaced ?
7 ft door, double spring. When retensioning my spring, it’s gets pretty tight around 15 1/4 turns. Kind of wonder if it’s supposed to be this tough. Every video I watched made the moves look super easy almost all the way thru until the end. Thoughts?

Motor power possibly? Have you tried to lift the door manually to make sure it is in fact easy to do ?
My gagage door on the last foot or two going up pulls up really hard. The opener will not close the door. Help!
Sounds like too much tension or wrong springs, did you change these yourself?
Is it the same method on a rear torsion spring garage door?
If yours are in the back things are reversed if I’m not mistaken. ( by that I mean it pushes the opposite way than in my video )

Here's an additional step, before beginning pull that classic car out of the garage just in case one of those bars goes flying. lol.

I took off both cables on each side when the garage door was open. I shut the garage door. Is there still tension in both springs?
There should be none, the tube should twist easily since both cables are off. The springs are likely still stretched though so if you unscrew the bolts the may spring back to an un stretched position. ( left to right basically, so still a good idea to use winding bars to hold )
I’ve found that the 7/16 socket needs to be a 12 point socket to work on the square head bolts.

You need to tighten both of course if they’re loose, be VERY careful and watch more videos with two springs

Assuming you put the correct spring on the correct side you’re always winding up
Gloves and goggles are a must.
Out of all the video's I've watched this one shows detail not given in others. Examples: Take up bobbin goes directly against bearing, no space. Hitting the spring to one side to compensate for spring expansion/contraction. Where door level should be and more.
Will rebar work in place of winding bars?
I would only recommend winding bars made for the task to be honest
Is this for a left wound torsion spring?
When you say left wound it usually goes on the right side. ( Never understood why they do it that way, but this is a “right” wound spring )

This method is door closed. Springs are fully tensioned at that point. Be very careful when doing anything with the springs as they can seriously hurt you.

This is a dangerous video to follow if your garage has spring tension already on it, and if your garage has two springs. It is very dangerous to loosen the nuts on the springs or lower the spring tension without proper procedure. Loose nuts and 0 spring tension is the condition this guy’s garage starts out in instead explaining the procedure to get there. If you loosen the springs improperly it can cause you serious injury and damage to your home.
I learned this the hard way after trying to follow this video. The screw I was loosening grabbed my wrench and the spring flung it very fast into my wall. This happened while I was trying to get the spring tension down so that I could count the number of turns to tighten the spring, as shown later in this video. After talking with people who know more than me, I learned that he was incorrect when he said “it’s the same if you have 2 springs”.
The damage done includes a crack going up my wall and through the ceiling, as well as a garage door that is crooked, will no longer shut, and needs professional repair.
Don’t be like me… do yourself a favor by hiring a professional instead of listening to this guy.
This video does not show anything to do with loosening the spring tension as the title clearly states it’s how to get your tension back from this state of no tension, I’d NEVER recommend anyone unscrew the set screws without the proper steps. As you stated and as is known by many this can be incredibly dangerous and I’ve met a few guys who have injured themselves by unscrewing the set screws without knowing what they’re doing. All that being said I am glad to hear you are not hurt.
This video makes it look easy to people, whether they know what they are doing or not. I was enticed, but not educated on dangers. Please add a disclaimer about dangers somewhere to prevent new homeowners like me from making mistakes. Thanks!

The tension on the spring is hundreds, if not thousands of lbs. Better to pay a pro vs the hospital.
