      A handful of teams passed on dinwiddie. Bulls did too

    • @paulwarren6062
      @paulwarren6062 3 года назад

      But if you look back, both of them were going off of injuries in collage. Neither were ready to play right away their rookie year. When they got to play, you could tell they were rusty. Dinwiddie was awful in his first 2 seasons. Base on how bad he played, and his lack of athleticism, I can't blame the GM for waiving him. He only improved after spending time in the G-League before Brooklyn took a flyer on him. Middleton did very little as a rookie too, but the Pistons wanted to keep him. The reason they traded him was because Milwaukee wouldn't do the Knight for Jenning deal, unless Middleton was included too. Pistons wanted to be a playoff team, and they felt Jennings at the time was better than Knight. Obviously looking in hindsight it's cane back to bite Detroit. But at the time, they seemed like decent decisions. I remember when that trade happened. I was hype to get Jennings, and I felt giving up Knight and a unproven Middleton was nothing. I mean, it is what it is I guess.

    • @paulwarren6062
      @paulwarren6062 3 года назад +1

      The Pistons needed a shooter, and Kennard was considered the best shooter in the draft. Mitchell had a great workout, but he was more of a raw high upside prospect. SVG at the time, wanted a shooter and a safe pick. I mean Utah took Mitchell as best available player. It's not like any of these teams knew he'd be as good as he is now. That's why the lottery is the lottery, you just have to hope you get lucky with your pick.

      @@Loganbub I'll feel the way I want, and have the opinions I want. What's the big deal? I see all the flaws and mistakes that have happened in hindsight. But I can also see where the front office was coming from when they made those picks, and try to justify it a bit. I'm not saying that makes things any better. But just being pissed and whiney like a lot of Piston fans are doesn't help either. The reasons and explanations that went into picks like Luke Kennard and Stanley Johnson were justifiable. Nobody could have imagined guys like Devin Booker or Donavan Mitchell would turn out as good as they are now. Neither of them were high picks so clearly other teams passed on them too. So while the previous Piston regimes do get a balk of the blame. I can't see it's entirely on them, when other franchise made mistakes too. Look, we got the #1 pick now and a smart GM. That's all the matters. I'm not here trying to argue about old news when this is a positive moment for the Pistons.

Pistons now have the same guy that helped draft Durant, Harden, Westbrook, Ibaka. So we know he has a better eye for talent. Getting #7-#10 picks year after year is an absolute hit or miss.
    Most teams that linger in this area barely ever break through. Can’t harp on teams that miss with these picks year & year. Teams like the Kings, that blow multiple top 5 picks- are WAY worse.

    Good video. Thank god we've seen the back of this era and a new direction under Troy Weaver. I'd argue we were amongst the biggest winners in the 2020 draft - Bey and Stewart look like absolute steals, and Killian just needs time I think but will come good. Hopefully we can land a top four pick this year and then could really be a team to watch in a couple of years time.

    A VERY good video. One thing you left out, which contributed to a lot of the bad decisions early in the video, was the death of former owner Bill Davidson in 2008. After starting the season 3-0, he died shortly after that. His wife Karen, pulled the money from the team, which prompted Joe Dumars to trade Chauncey Billups. That was the beginning of the end for everything and the start of this whole video. Dumars was literally working on a shoestring budget with whatever he could. No, it doesn't excuse bad decisions but having no money to work with will do that to you. Once Tom Gores bought the team, he made the mistake of letting Stan Van Gundy be coach and GM, to which, he made some of the WORST decisions. Let's see what happens with Troy Weaver.

    Dear lord, seeing the names Gordon Heyward and Paul George right after Greg Monroe in 2010 and then seeing Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard after Brandon Knight in 2011 is very painful. Add to it that the best pick the Pistons made in the decade, Khris Middleton, was tossed in a trade to get rid of one of their picks, Brandon Knight, and the pain becomes worse. Then it continues like that for the rest of the decade.

    Let us not forget the 76's draft blunders. They drafted Even Turner as their number 2 pick in 2010 instead of Cousins, Paul George or Hayward.They traded away their drafted player Vucevic in 2012. Traded away their drafted player Jrue Holiday for Nerlens Noel in 2013 and also in 2013 drafted Michael Carter Williams at number 11 instead of Giannis or Steven Adams. In 2014, drafted Elfrid Payton instead of Nurkic or Zach Lavine. Drafted Jahlil Okafor at number 3 in 2015 instead of KP, Myles Turner, or Devin Booker. In 2016, traded away their drafted player Jeremy Grant for Ersan Ilyasova. In 2017 probably their biggest blunder but they traded up to take Fultz and lost a first round pick and Jayson Tatum. Lastly in 2018 they traded away Mikal Bridges for Zhaire Smith so we will see if that one will stand the test of time. Overall, they are lucky to have got Embiid and Simmons out of that mess but they could have been so much better without their blunders over the years.
