Absolutely, lessons learned! Not only was I intent on buying a W42, but the lure of it being such a “famous” boat drew me in, to the point of losing reason.
I’ve been getting tons of pretty harsh comments on my channel, and maybe I deserve some of it.
But I’ll leave the video up for its intended purpose - for others to learn from.

Thanks for being so upfront about your sad experience. Wishing you all the best in the future on land. I'd take the $9,000 immediately as the previous owners may change their mind later. Hopefully probate will be resolved soon and your lawyer friend will help sorting things out for you.

@@AmysSoloSailingAdventures I can't believe you haven't demanded all of your money plus expenses returned to you. They can't sell something they don't have a legal title to. It's like if someone sold you a car they had just rented. Get your money back. All of it.
This story gives me shivers. It’s so important to take a step back, slow things down, and take a hard, critical eye at the boat you just fell in love with and are ready to sign on the dotted line for.
Getting a survey done is so, so important. A surveyor would have readily caught these major issues.
I read this comment and don't need to watch the video. People who don't get a survey done by a reputable marine inspector are utterly incompetent and have no place being on the water.

That was rough to watch, like you mentioned, just sounds like she was too far into the fantasy of that boat because of its pedigree. Hurts that she's giving up sailing, but glad she was able to stay safe given everything that occurred. I hope Amy is able to get her feet back under her quickly and maybe we'll eventually see her on the water again in the future.
usually people are delusional, they become romantically involved with some old dumpster and then poof the rest is history along with the bank account, not saying that is this case but generally it is
"This boat, has great bones" @28:00...Umm No, it doesn't actually; Rotted Stringers, and Delaminated tabs are the Bones "Fiona" is working with....Amy was/is Emotionally attached to "Fiona" and it's Story. She claims to be mechanical, yet she missed all the tell tale signs a cheap Flashlight would've exposed, like the dried motor oil slurry coating the "new" engine. The smartest move Amy made was retaining legal representation. I sincerely hope she recoups as much money from this fiasco as she can...

You said exactly what I wanted to that's the bones of the boat it's only worth it to replace stringers if a boat is free and now to glass then back in is almost impossible cause fiberglass and resin has tripled in price during a falling economy

There is a zero % chance that the motor is 'new' it's probably 'new to you'.
Seems like some of this could have been discovered on the hard up in NY. Like delaminating plywood. You can see if an engine is leaking oil by looking at it. Should have had oil in the bilge if was leaking that bad. Plus the engine would have grease like sludge caked on the outside by the leak areas. She's a mechanic should have spotted that. Like you said this is a real old boat just about everything needs replacing.
Yeah it seems as though no one even looked at it, almost sounds as if she bought it sight unseen hence the win vane missing.

I am just now finding this great channel. We've been needing an honest sailing channel for a long time now, and this is a breath of fresh air. This poor woman was really scammed. Remember, no matter how "nice" the sellers of anything seem, buying anything expensive is like going to war. Be prepared, and get good intelligence. Sounds pretty over dramatic to me. I live on an 1983 I bought for 17k. 75k when you do the work is still just a few years waiting on a boat to be ready for its next 50 years. Most houses are 200k plus insurance and maintenance. She is letting 100k woop her ass while she is planning to dive into a 200k minimum world. It's a 3 year business plan. Her clients can read the books about the history.. I've taken a few "breaks from the water. Land life and scumlords always push a mariner back to the sea. 100k is a very acceptable price for a couple decades on the drink. Of course it needs to be your favorite vessel, not a practice vessle

I don't agree. $100k is a lotta coin when the boat is way too big to begin with AND with the endpoint STILL being an unknown (like replacing all the standing rigging). I'd take the 9 grand offer and walk.
If you're buying a used boat, go as small as you can, I would say less than 36' and buy one that someone else has already refitted with updated electronics, electric control panel, standing and running rigging, sails, plumbing. The bottom paint should be reasonably good for a year of learning to sail your boat. If you have to motor it to your marina and it's been sitting for any length of time drain those tanks, inspect them, polish the fuel If it's not too old or dispose of it. Make sure the engine sea strainer is cleaned, replace the fuel filter, clean and flush the heat exchanger, replace the impeller and inspect the engine for leaks. Definitely get the boat surveyed

I bought a Peterson 34 with a universal gas powered inboard. That thing was way beyond fixing so I got it craned out. I'm going to place a 20hp outboard on the transom and probably use the engine compartment for lithium ion batteries and extra water storage..

Sounds a bit strange that a qualified experienced mechanic wouldnt know that the engine is leaking fuel and oil or see sketchy wires or delaminated wood. Why on earth would you pay for a boat before seeing it and testing it out. And I would have asked for way more for missing self steering windvane or called off the deal. And then again demanded a refund when paoerwork wouldnt go through. Who tries to take a 6ft draft down the ICW? Who sails off with a sketchy engine and fuel tanks at least have a portable tank to run clean fuel with a clean tank and line to engine. Just for someone with some experience none of this makes sense. This is really sad. Dont be blinded by some idea and assumptions. Think of everything that can be wrong and see if it is or isnt. And prepare properly. If you buy a solid boat with some work done and truly functioning well you can save a lot and have a great boat while you make it new. I have a Pearson 10M for sale in Jersey City for $9k with many many new parts. Zero rot, zero soft spots, new head, new panel, aelf tailing winches, many new engine parts on a clean and reliable engine with no leaks, new heat exchanger, new alternator, new starter, new fuel pump, new water pump, new stainless dorades, new cleats, new running rigging, new mainsheet tackle. Just $9k and can sail and motor no problems. Just needs cushions, dodger and electronics like chartplotter for example. Choose wisely. If interested my cell is 908-397-3423

Everything in this video can and should have been avoided by using an inspector and a reputable sales person.
$70,000 to repair the old boat😵😱 I would not even want to take that boat even if I was given to me for free. Also, the boat was never transferred into her name, so no sale took place, and then there was a whole list of latent defects which was never disclosed, so she can legally claim her money back that she paid for it.
$70K won't scratch the surface on that tank of a boat. Double that. Not worth it.

The number one thing on buying a sailboat is the Hull, some of the older boats from the 1960s have super thick fiberglass hulls like the Pearson triton as one example, I would consider a older boat if it checked out the hull and rudder with a plastic hammer and a moisture meter, anything other than the hull can be rebuilt even better than its original design

i remember an episode of the stooges where the boys bought a boat and after they traded their car for the craft the guy, they bought it from was laughing at them and then they were laughing at him about the rotten car they traded to him, then Curley stepped in the boat ad his leg wet though the hull, this story reminds me of that episode

I saw some boats for sale northeast area that ( from the pictures) looked in better condition, better prices than my area ( northeast Florida). I'm not an experienced boat buyer-- a sailor friend said me being boatless right now is a blessing 😂

I watched her video when it first came out, and people in the comments kept calling the sellers scammers. They're not, they were ignorant. It wasn't their boat, it was their dad's. The fault lies with both of them for not having it inspected beforehand, and either way, she paid WAY too much for the thing.

My boat is over 50. I bought it for 100 dollars. Totally trash. It's awesome. Lol. But I gutted it, cut the deck off, cut the bottom off, and then just used the hull to build a completely custom boat from the bottom up. Very simple build. The boat is very basic, very utilitarian. And it's no longer a sailboat it's a semi displacement power cruiser now. It's now a 2024 boat. Cost me about 7000 over time. Not all at once. I bought things as I got to that part.

That was difficult to watch. She made so many mistakes, and it was painful to watch her dreams die. And NASA publishes its launch exclusion zones weeks, if not months in advance and so that mistake was purely her fault.

They're situ is different she got herself pregnant and that changes EVERYTHING! How come he wasn't shooting blanks THAT'S what I woulda done (and its what I did) before I ever set sail on the first go round. then they buy too big of a boat because now they need more room with a kid running around? I once knew a couple that had a coupla kids BUT they sailed on a 40' steel double ended ketch that had a huge beam and whose LWL was only a coupla feet shorter than the boat. They self taught their kids and they grew up living on that boat. They also moored their boat up in Saint Augustine waters where HE was one helluva repair guy that knew more about sailing craft than the people building them! Yeah they took the summer off and sailed off to Europe this was back in the 60's. This captain HATED to use the engine as well and would come to his mooring UNDER SAIL during ebb tide. I don't think they ever docked at a dock... they either moored or anchored. Those kids were swimming at about the time they learned how to walk.
Heaps of good boats, already prepped for international sailing, for sale at either end of the Panama Canal and in the pacific Islands. The owners tried the adventure and 1/2 way through decided to end their adventure early. Where they stop is where they have to sell the boat so they are disadvantaged in remote locations and therefore have to sell cheap.

It's not old boats in general one should be wary of, but the sellers. Plenty of well taken care of "old boats" out there. Due diligence from the buyer is important, as there's no way to determine liars from honest people at a glance. A survey would have helped and her first red flag should have been the mileage on the boat; didn't even start the engine until after the purchase! Unfortunately, it also sounds like she was naive in believing that if someone is "nice" they must also be honest, and hadn't learned to separate emotion from large purchases. Sad way to find out that there are plenty of people out there willing to take advantage, but there's some personal responsibility here, too.
I agree there’s plenty of decent 10-15k 80s 90s sailboats that are well worth it n require 20k of work but aren’t too far red money wise we have a 79 wd schock Santana 35 market value is between 20-30k we paid 10 n expect to put 16-20 into it over then next couple of years going 10k over the market value but we plan to have it for atleast another decade n it would be ready for another 50yrs

Straight up... I worked with a PHENOMENAL surveyor when I bought my boat (A boat you recommended as having potential in one of your videos). When I buy up, meaning 42'~ I will FLY MY SURVEYOR TO THE BOAT. A great surveyor is worth their weight in gold.

The trick is to find a GOOD surveyor - I've used six - one was excellent (Washington state), two were good (California) one was fair (Washington state) , one was poor, (Florida), and one (Annapolis) was either corrupt (and working with the broker) or totally incompetent. It is tough to find out if the surveyor is good or not - and definitely don't use one recommended by the broker.

I did have a few old boats over the years. Allways very cheap ones. Never hired profesional surveyor.
I'm not an expert by any means, just an avarage wood butcher, can work with epoxy and glass, plywood, strip planking, can stick - weld steel and repair torned sail. Basic maintenance on the diesel engines and repairs on the outboards.
I would say that any one that wants to go sailing and doesn't have a money, should start with a small, cheap, simple boats. Do your own repairs and maintenance,.maybe build yourself a dinghy. Sail a lot, in different conditions, manoever under sail. Row, scull and paddle. You will learn a lot. After couple of seasons in the small boats, if you are still into it, search for the bigger one.
Don't buy bigger then what you need, as costs rise exponentialy. Focus on essentials - hull must be sound, keel, rudder, mast solidly attached, sails servicable. Rest is optional. If the interior is crap, throw it away and build new, simple, functional one, quickly. You dont need special tropical woods with zillions of layers of varnish. Just use ply and ordinary soft woods. Paint everything white. Look at the interiors of the working and racing boats for inspiration. You can sail with no electricity and electronics at all. Or install yourself very basic viring.
With that kind of attitude, you can sail very far, for very little money. And do most of the maintenance and repairs your self. That is crucial if you have to / want to keep costs down. Go sailing!

I am a Dutch. We have a lots of all kinds of boats in our waters. Many traditional ex working sailing barges, coastal sailing ships, and quite a few ocean going sailing ships, among the other types. Most of them are built in iron or steel. They are huge by yachting standards,. but put in a such way that their systems can be built and operated as cheaply as possible, with a small crew. Very inspirational for a wonnabe ocean sailor on the budget.
Yachting ways of doing things are often unnecessary to complicated and expensive.
She bouth a lemon due to total lack of experience. Not a good exemple.

She didn't have the money to buy a newer boat - she paid $19K for the WS42 and nineteen k would not buy much of anything newer.
I have ideas about an equation one could develop thar would reveal these risks. Here are some variables: Cost, size, age, then a list of condition variables like paint, motor, rigging, sails, electronics. I don't want to dig her either, but an old 40' boat is a lot of work even if it's in good condition. Nothing about that trash heap speaks 'good condition.' Nothing. It's ugly as sin. If the paint is bad on a boat that old you know it's rotten. That's not a new motor. There should be reciepts. At best it got some new bearings and rings or whatever and it wasn't taken out of the boat for the work. Who rebuilds a motor and doesn't paint it it? Someone who didn't remove it. Maybe they just bought a used engine on ebay and installed it. So it's new to the boat. :) She was definitely romanced by the history of the boat and didn't realize how bad it was even after looking it over. Sad story I wish I could help her.
Here's the biggest red flag. It's a 40' boat for $18k. In the time it took to list it and her to travel from the DR, if it was a deal sk.eone would have beat her to it. The man died 2 years prior? That means for 2 years nobody thought it was worth 18k. You run, not walk, away from deals like that.

I spent three grand on a 1974 Ericson 27, been sailing her for 4 years and other than oil changes and the occasional halyard change she's been a dream to own.. 42 ft vessel is way too large if expense is even a word in your vocabulary.

Ok I hear you - NO OLD boats. I want a 2 cabin 1 head Beneteau 41.1. Looking at our favorite porn site reveals the the least expensive choice at 240k. Of course that doesn’t include the charter versions but then the charter versions aren’t configured to my liking. So how about a high level overview of where Ive gone wrong.
You need to adjust, get the three cabin, save 100k, use the 100k savings to convert the vessel to your needs and equip it for what type of sailing you want, this way you are into the boat all in for less than even the purchase price of the two cabin, I agree the two cabin is nice but not as nice as 100k in upgrades to your new to you fancy Dancy sailboat

In my 60 years I’ve been through worse than this. Putting your head down and digging your way out of a mess you created is the only solution. Throwing your hands in the air and saying “fuck it, I quit” is the wrong direction.
Be prepared to throw away all the cash you spend on a boat
That way if you get ten cents on the dollar you’ll be happy when done sailing 😂

Whether you're buying a (used) car or a boat, "Two years on the hard" or "Two years on the blocks" means that your hoses/gaskets/belts/tires, etc..are ALL suspect and probably needing to be replaced. It just is what it is. "Rubber"--even the new stuff--dry rots and if it's not being used and lubricated on a regular basis you're just asking them to waste away. Same thing with the battery. It sounds good to get a boat that "has been on the hard"...because, the hull at least isn't sitting in the water...but all your stuff is suspect.
Oh, yeah, and the tanks have to be completely emptied and scrubbed if they've been sitting that long.

yeah 2 years on the hard is already enough of a red flag to pass on a listing. unmonitored leaks on a boat are also a real problem. you can't just let them sit for a year.

I CAN fix stuff, but I don't really want to. Usually ends up being a mediocre job. But it works. Want a boat for the freedom, relaxation and new locations. Not looking for anymore projects - I still have several of those...

If you don't know what you're doing maybe you should hire some one that does. If she had a proper survey done I bet most of her major issues would have been known prior to purchase. And I'm of the opinion that most surveys are not work the paper they are written on but any moderately competent surveyor would have picked up on the major issues on this boat. Nothing is more expensive as a cheap boat. Boat has negative value to it. Who buys a boat where the name on the title is a dead guy? Without probate being done? Lots of really bad decisions on this self inflicted wound.
with a survey all of this would have been avoided, people don't usually think spending 1500 on a survey for a 15k boat is worth it but its always worth it
We just bought a boat during Covid, sight unseen in a foreign country (we're Canadian, boat was in Maine). We had a thorough inspection done and were fortunate enough to be able to gain information on the boat's previous owners (not the one we bouht from)- and lucky enough to have seen all the work they did to her- she's a 1979 Island Trader- a big chunky monkey- and buying an old boat is scary. We finally got our hands on her and brought her to Canada late last summer.. I was not on the trip, but let me tell you, was nervous as hell waiting for her/hubby to arrive in Nova Scotia, worried about all the things that could go wrong on an old boat. So glad no one was injured, sad that this has kicked Amy in the ass, but better that they knew when to get out of a sinking ship.

Such a sad, sad story. It just underlines the importance of getting a survey. Decades ago when i was house hunting, I had a house inspector who basically talked my wife ad I out of two different homes. It really pays to have a non-emotional evaluation of an expensive purchase to help weed out those with potential problems.

So should people see the therapist before they buy a boat. It is essentially a prison where you are shaken around, threatened with squalls, storms, it can spring a leak at any time and you could drown. Mental therapy. @@ChasingLatitudes I like older boats but the modern ones have longer waterline length and more room inside for the length so yes a more modern boat is a good idea and like people say if you cannot get insurance they may not let you into some marinas. I do like the lighter interior colors of the modern boats too. He makes a lot of sense especially getting someone to check over your yacht with a surveyor. You are spending a lot of money. You may think that you are getting a good deal but find out refitting and repairs may cost 100,000 whereas is you hire someone they can check and 40,000 yacht may have all new stuff and be in excellent condition. Best wishes. My heart goes out to this lady but you have to do due diligence before you buy a yacht. There is someone in mind who could really help you get that perfect yacht for you
Forget surveyors. If you yourself don't know boats at expert level you should never buy an older boat.
I think what happens is that people think they know but unfortunately you don't know what you don't know and that gets people into trouble

That boat should have been scrapped or given for free. Those kids ripped her off bad. Took the only thing worth money on it and ripped her off. Even offering her 9k and she has to wait? Where is the 18k she paid? But then again it's not thier fault it's up to the buyer to find this stuff. But she should have done like 2 days worth of inspecting. Let alone getting a survey. I won't get a survey on a 10k boat but 20? Sheesh

This is the thing with older boats. They are awesome, but by the time you've fixed them up, you've spent a couple of years worth of lost wages, and tens of thousands in time and materials/yard costs etc. Sometimes, even paying zero for the boat is too much. One thing to consider is that this boat still floats, whereas a boat with a lesser keel likely wouldn't have survived the collision that originally caused that damage. (BUT- heavy boats hit stuff harder-carry more momentum into any collision given both boats going the same speed). I personally Iove older boats, but they are what they are; need to be surveyed thoroughly and discounted heavily in price. Running costs are much higher too. The biggest problem for me is backing the buggers up. .

For an experienced sailor she seemed pretty unprepared. A qualified survey would have discovered the hole in the keel, the contaminated fuel, the delaminated decking and support, poor condition of the wiring,and the problems with the motor. She should have never left NY with the fuel and engine she had. If she had paid a few hundred for a survey she would have saved thousands.

I have been watching your videos for about two months now, and my single largest question is. Does your team offer services for buyers other than sail boats? In a year or two, we are going to be buying a trawler (motor yacht). And while your video have been hugely helpful, your consultant services is definitely desirable. But our concern is you don’t cover motor yachts.

Our boat is 62 years old and has had similar issues and we've been put it similar situations. But we had it surveyed first, got the price reduced, and there are two of us working on it which makes it a lot easier, and we chip away at the work little by little as we cruise.

Ok upon further thought... you should go after the sellers they did NOT own the boat thus they had NO RIGHTS to sell it until AFTER it cleared probate! I would go after the initial payment AND the additional funds you put into it, Amy. Sure you WERE negligent, bigtime for NOT obtaining a survey BUT WHY was the boat even being listed for sale when the title was NOT CLEAR to begin with? Go after them and I would include your storage fees as well.
I'd sue their insurance company as well. You need to find a recommended attorney that deals with maritime sales and law. These people may be the nicest people on the planet but if THAT were the case why did they list a boat they didn't even own?

That's WAY TOO BIG! Remember that the bigger it gets the more EVERYTHING on it costs and that includes yanking the boat out to dry dock and dock fees. Some places even charge you by the foot for mooring. I don't agree with the narrator regarding speed. If you're going sailing you want a boat that's not gonna lose its rudder, okay? That means you want a full keel with a keel mounted rudder like this guy has. Small cockpits are also a PLUS and especially if solo. However this boat doesn't have a lotta living area compared to its overall length. I mean WHY such a huge boat? No survey? The ICW is NO PLACE for a sailboat and especially one that doesn't have a reliable engine. I mean WTF was she doing there to begin with? Ok.. some broken shroud lines know what that means? WOW would YOU wanna go out there knowing that? A survey of course woulda uncovered all this mess. I mean frayed wiring, rotted floor stringers I mean you're looking at a complete interior rebuild and now you gotta replace the standing rigging as well? Yeah and this doesn't include water in the keel there. Wow. She woulda been much happier with a Cape Dory 28. I really do NOT understand those engine leaks NOT being spotted I mean she's a mechanic WTF was she thinking? Tell you what she had to have THIS BOAT! Get a survey, people.

1. Don't go to sea with a boat that has been neglected for years.
2. Always inspect the diesel tanks of a boat that has been sitting for a while, prior to going to sea. Unless the tanks was completely emptied by the previous owner, they will have debris.
3. Don't go to sea without checking the batteries and their capacity, especially if the boat has been sitting for years. Batteries go bad.
4. Redundancy has merit. Have backups.
Etc... Get a boat that is loved and used, well maintained and never neglected.

To be honest when you buy an old boat without a surveyor you should at least look at the webpage and read about all the repairs which have been done, You would read that the engine is "new" but refurbished and Eric had to mix some parts from the old engine with the refurbished ones and they had a lot of issues to get the engine running.
If we argue about the slip cost than people should never buy Catamarans.
The price which she paid for the boat was way less than that what the original asking price of 55k was.

I hope someone tells this lady that by legal definition she was defrauded. Not because the boat was unseaworthy but because someone sold her a boat that they didn't have legal title/possession of. This might/probably not intentional but she certainly has the right to demand all of her money back plus expenses.
@@larkangel6593 Wrong. Selling/accepting money for any piece of property and not being able to provide legal transfer of ownership gives the buyer the right to demand the return of funds. You're looking at it from an estate perspective. I talking about the buyer's legal rights. If you buy something and then the seller can't/won't transfer legal ownership, you are entitled to all your money and in many cases additional financial damages. The fact that these family members didn't know they couldn't legally transfer ownership to the perspective buyer at the time is irrelevant.

The thing was tied up in probate so until it was actually IN THE SELLERS NAME they had no rights to sell it. She was defrauded and I'd go after them for all the costs incurred and THAT was probably why the sellers made that $9k offer. Yeah they knew the drill.
