  • For the last morning of our landscape photography tour round Scotland, I headed to Faraid Head near Durness in the far north west Highlands to have a last outing with the Lumix S1R. This was a great way to end our trip, photographing seascapes at the extreme north western tip of Scotland. Over the previous weeks we had really come to bond with the Lumix S1R, which really is an exceptional camera. It was sad to say goodbye, but even sadder to end what had been the most amazing trip around the Scottish Highlands.

Thanks Julian (there I go, manipulating the algorithm again! :) ) It really was an amazing trip, I hope we'll be able to do at least some of it again in 2021 if it is safe to do so! S.

I was in the north-west in September too and had some lovely weather. But wet and most too. It is a lovely place and your images certainly do it justice.

Thank you Rob, what a September it was up there this year! We had a few days of torrential rain as well of course, but the gaps in-between were spectacular! S.

Thank you Sam for sharing this whole wonderful series from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. I came across your channel because I’m drawn to these places very strongly, and your love of them is reflected in your photographs, and your videos. Those qualities have kept me watching and waiting for your next immersion into the beauty of that powerfully stunning earth, sea, and sky. Many photographers go there, but your connection and love of those places makes your photographs stand out. Thank you again, and I’ll look forward to your next journey back! Shannon

Thank you so much Shannon, that is such a kind comment! I'm really pleased you enjoyed the videos. I grew up in Durness so the Highlands are really in my blood, it's great to hear that that connection came across in the images. We were very lucky to be able to make it up there this year, and even luckier with the conditions. This trip was partly about exploring some of the areas I am less familiar with as we are hoping to spend a lot more time up there in the future! Hopefully 2021 will enable us to head up there again if it is safe to do so! Sam.

Thank you very much Mark, I think that was my favourite of the three in the end as well! Thank you for watching, and fingers crossed that you will be able to make it up to Skye in March, I'm hoping we will all be able to travel a lot more in 2021. Sam.

My wife and I have always seen a trip to Scotland as one of our dream vacations...with retirement just around the corner (June 2021 for Joanne and Aug 2022 for me) our planning will soon start. Definitely going to use this series to give us ideas for photography stops! Loved the images Sam. Your landscape photography is stunning.

Hi Peter, thank you so much for your kind comments, and congratulations to you and Joanne on your upcoming retirement! If I can recommend just one spot, it would have to be Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris. That place really is special, and heading out there is also a good excuse to stop off at Skye on the way. We're hoping to spend a lot more time there in the future ourselves and we'd love to explore more of the outer hebrides. I do hope that you are able to make it, and please get in touch if you need any specific recommendations! Sam.

Great vlog and photographs as always mate! Haven't tried the S1R yet, but I am really in love with the S1, so I only assume it's just more of the same :)

Thanks Oddbjørn! I was just catching up on part 2 of your autumn colours video this morning, stunning! The S1R was a wonderful camera, we were very, very almost converted from our Canons! It was maybe a bit heavy for us, although I expect the S1 is a little bit better in that respect. It was built like a tank though, and the image quality really was something else! Unfortunately I think we will be sticking with the Canons purely because of the lens range for wildlife (and we’re a bit stuck in our ways) but we really enjoyed using the S1R! S

I remember you doing a vog from this part of Scotland previously and you can tell from the way you speak about it that it is a special place for you & I remebered you saying it was were you grew up. As for the S1R it is a beast of a camera & I found it wuite easy to get used to after having the G9 for 18 months. It is heavy though and that was one of the reasons that when the S5 came out I plunged for that. I still have Canon in my blood too and although I find the colour rendering of the Panasonic more realistic I still prefer Canon colours. I thought the images in this episode really reflected your love for the area, you seemed to be very much in your comfort zone so to take a camera to a location that you knew well seemed to bring out the best of the camera... my fave was the long exposure at 4:38, loved the compsoition and tones in this, a real "coolblue" feel to it which possibly had potential for a mono too? A very enjoyable series Sam. Atb Alan

Thank you very much Alan, I hadn't thought of trying a black and white version of that image. I will give it a go! We really did come to appreciate the S1R by the end of the trip. I think though as we need a camera and lens combo that covers wildlife as well as landscapes the Canons just seem to be the better fit for us, especially as we are now building up a collection of canon glass. We're holding out for the R5 at the moment, although with some gritted teeth over the price I have to say! Thanks so much for watching the series, we're already looking forward to making the next one! S.

Loved the first image Sam at 04:40 think it was my fav. I have been shooting on the 5d mkiii for a few years now and i have just ordered a new camera. I decided to go down the mirrorless route but not with the R5 far to expensive for me and i have no need for 8k or to have to purchase c-fast cards etc, the R6 is still pricey but felt the Eos R better suited my needs so i have one on order and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. You certainly produced some fantastic material from Scotland as well as images , i am sure the experience was something to always remember .

    • @BosePhotography

Thank you Lee! I think you made great decision going with the R, we came very close to buying one ourselves recently, it seems to be incredible value at the moment. We have come to rely very heavily on the weather sealing of the 5D (always seems to be raining on us!), so we were put off the R6, and after using the S1R we would like a bigger step up in resolution. The R ticks both boxes with higher megapixels and weather sealing. The only reason we decided against it is that it's not ideal for wildlife photography, and we need a camera for both landscapes and wildlife. Sadly, we may need to take the plunge and go for the R5, it's basically our perfect camera apart from the price! We'll wait a while longer though and see if the price comes down, although it's not looking likely at the moment! S.

Great photos - hope to do a similar trip when all this is over! had to postpone Scotland twice this year. Interesting about your views on Canon as they matched mine.....I don't feel like I have to have the absolute best camera just one that will do what I want and feels good in my hand. At least Canon seem to have really woken up this year and looks like if the 45MP R5 isn't enough for anyone there will be a high resolution model out in 2021! I went to an EOS R as a stop gap to wait for the R5 price to drop and using some EF glass with the control ring adapter has worked great so you do not need to swap all your glass.

Hi Steve, I'm sorry to hear you had to cancel your trips this year, we were extremely lucky to be able to squeeze this trip in during September when it was safe to do so. I'm hoping things will be easier/safer in 2021 and I hope you can make it up then as well. I completely agree with your comments about the cameras, for us usability and familiarity are far more important than the spec sheets. We came very close to ordering an R recently but decided that whilst it is superb for landscapes it just didn't quite fulfil Hannah's needs for wildlife, so we're waiting for the R5 to come down a bit in price (if it does!) and until then the 5D III will keep us going! And definitely, we'll be sticking with EF glass for a while yet! Thanks for watching, Sam.
