    I've played *so* much Evil Genius when it was released over a decade ago. Good to see it in the spotlight - (almost) nothing but fond memories of that game!
    (...unless you're about to trash it, which I highly doubt - it was a great game despite its flaws)

    • @AAhmou
      @AAhmou 7 лет назад +1

      The main flaw is the transition from the desert island to the jungle one...

    • @plutoniumrooster2954
      @plutoniumrooster2954 7 лет назад +3

      I wouldn't even call it the main flaw - Mathas makes some good additional points too, but yeah, the transfer is definitely awkward. Expecially the first time when you don't know what to expect and you might be pretty unprepared.
      All of your loot scattered around this tiny shack, agents arriving in mere minutes, and meanwhile you're scrambling to get your workers to dig a treasury - because even if you saved up, you have to be able to *store* your gold before you can spend it! :D

      I loved this game a lot but I hope they do something about the issues that Mathas pointed out.

    I think evil genius is a perfect example of developers thinking outside of the box having a great idea but lacking experience since nothing like the game they made existed before
    In such cases it's always the question will the sequel iron out the errors bye expanding on the grate core mechanics or ruin everything bye returning to "proven" mechanics

    FYI, agents tunnel in when parts of your base are blocked by objects. They should have been clear about that

    As a diehard fan of Evil Genius--it was the first playthrough I did--I definitely agree with you about how complicated and at times tedious it is. There's a LOT to do and it can take forever to finish a game.
    Another game that's very similar, and you may want to review at some point, is Kaiju-a-Gogo on Steam. You play a mad scientist who's created his or her personal giant monster, and send your creature to attack cities around the world.

    I will neither roast nor toast. You are quite right: It's not a bad a game at all, but it does have quite a number of problems. I hope you can at least see why people are so excited about a sequel. If it can deliver on the bags of promise it has, it could be really terrific. I'm rather cautiously skeptical though, as Rebellion have a very spotty history when it comes to quality.
    If I was to name one over rated classic PC game, it would probably be Myst. The whole series, to me, was just terrible in every way. I can't think of any best selling point 'n' clicks I'd rather play less than those. *shudder*

    I want more games to have deathtraps. Odd that you mention doors to nowhere, as I swear the AI once it gets inside your base, knows exactly where every room is. I had a cash generating trap that would slowly murder nosy investigators, on the path to the inner sanctum where my evil genius was. Guess where the investigator went. That's right, he didn't even go into the same corridor, er always took a left in the previous corridor, entered my barracks, and make either a beeline for the freezer, or head towards my money. They were all just pathetic thieves and investigators too so I'm pretty sure they're guided towards rooms with high heat.

    I played the shit out of Evil Genius when it first came out, and I never really ran into the waiting problems you seemed to have. Sure, there was some of it, but it didn't seem excessive because there was always stuff to do while waiting. The missions/notoriety/heat mechanics got a little old, but EG was a fantastic base building game. I spent hours and hours optimizing layouts and trap networks and such, so I never felt like I was sitting around waiting for stuff to happen. What I felt like it lacked on pacing, it more than made up in time and space to tinker. The one thing that really irked me about the game, personally, is no option to auto-tag invading enemy agents as hostiles for the gun turrets; you reach a point where you've captured all the super agents (designing a prison that would hold them indefinitely was quite a challenge) and the mooks are just in the damned way. Anyway, I guess it's a matter of perspective: I saw EG as a base building game with some stuff to do on the side. I could see how those who didn't spend tens of hours optimizing alert networks to automatically handle all situations might get a little bored/frustrated with the world map, but feel it's being a bit unfairly judged on that basis.

    DOTA, its a game my friends play and I do not know why they like the same map with only different teams and with over used Heroes are pretty much what they think the only key to win the game. I would've liked the game if it were not so competitive(just a little less). I would've tried some weird item builds that would make it funny but no. People are serious, even in Dota 2 its all about those "right timing" to initiate the team fight and will judge you if your build isnt what they're used to.

    • @PaleGhost69
      @PaleGhost69 6 лет назад

      Same. It was almost pushed into my hands to play it and after I realized its essentially "press x to win" I decided to break it and make it fun for me. After I told the guys that let me borrow it how I was able to get almost infinite arrows and focus through headshots and pins, they asked why did I make it boring... -.- I mean, cmon, in the span of a few seconds I can obliterate dozens of orcs and from their perspective, it would've all happened in 1 second.

    I can only really disagree with two points. The first point I disagree with is the "shorter more focused missions" bit, that's down to personal taste of course but I absolutely loathe that aspect of dungeon keeper, just when a mission starts getting good it ends; Of course the Evil Genius method had it's flaws too, with the transition being way too severe.
    As for the 2nd? Plotting; if it takes more than 30 seconds to reveal a mission then chances are you don't meet a secret requirement for it. Which yeah sucks, but it sucks because of obscured game mechanics rather than a pacing problem. (There are plenty of other places with pacing problems and god yes a fast forward button would help so much)

  • @chadtopia

    I actually liked Evil Genius a lot. It's flawed, but there's a lot of value playing it even today. It is good, but at the same time very limited. For a game that is about being the evil mastermind, it doesn't provide enough options all around.

  • @v.m.9198

    I think the original Gabriel Knight is a bit hyped up by nostalgia and doesn't really have great storytelling.

  • @zzxp1
    @zzxp1 6 лет назад

    Scientists are the best at plotting, base minions are useless for that, but i will admit it is unclear how much is left to reveal in a zone, is mostly try and error but it doesn't take long with the correct minions.
    My biggest complain are the traps and doors, maybe im stupid but aside the air turbine i find most of the traps just more unnecessarily hassle, agents work around them effortlessly and most of the time your minions are the ones dying by them. Doors are just plain useless agents appear to be the only ones with a little semblance of common sense and just wait for a minion to open it to bypass that super huge laser door it cost you so much to make, I end up even having more tourists in the base than in the damn hotel.

    Overrated game? To me, Halo Combat Evolved. I remember it came out the year I started secondary school (high school to you Americans) and my friends would not stop going on about Halo this, Halo that. I had a PS2 and was looking forward to the Gamecube but the Xbox had not really interested me (I did get one in the end). I went round to a friends house and he got me play Halo...and I just thought "meh". I played FPS games all the time, but to me it did not feel special or amazing, and I certainly did not get why people were getting so hyped about it. Even today I don't get the appeal of Halo, or the series as a whole.

      @praetorian9823 5 лет назад

      While I personally completely disagree with you, I do respect your opinion. For you information, part of the reason at least for me why people love Halo is how they built the world around it, the great music, cool art style, and fascinating story are some of the draws. While these points are subjective, I would strongly reccomend you watch someone like the Act Man if you want to better understand why we love Halo. Though I will say Halo under 343 have been soul crushingly disappointing so far.

    You have issues with this game and running out of space because you just building big rooms for no reason. Spend a day researching livable space and stop treating this game as an exciting drug that should fulfil your excitement. Its a slow paced game and it seems that you want to play it like a modern grindie mobile game. This game is from a different generation and you should consider that. Lootbox and grind weren't really around back then. You'll need imagination and empathy to really enjoy it. Calm down and enjoy the different universe. It's not a dungeon keeper and newer was.

    For my overrated game, I'll stick to genres I actually love. There'd be no point in picking The Sims or something since its genre itself doesn't appeal to me - it'd be impossible for me to objectively judge it for its faults.
    With that, my pick has to be Halo. There were quite a few things I actually liked about the game, but the level design absolutely ruined it for me. The majority of the game was: enter boring, bland room, kill wave of enemies, move to next similar looking / copy-paste section of the map, repeat. The Library has to be the worst level design in a respectable game, ever. I also didn't get the hype about the AI (it was extremely predictable) and found the multiplayer rather lackluster compared to the Unreal Tournaments.

    Overrated games, I can't think of only one, like Bethesda games (Skyrim was fun, but Fallout 4 is a disaster from my point of view) but also indie games (Five Night at Freddy's are so overrated and Undertale's a good game, but the fandom, jeez). Although I have to choose, and my choice is Life is Strange. Its story is so cliché and so badly told it's annoying. The dialogues and the characters are poorly written. The worst of the game part being the use of Max's power to solve puzzles". The only interesting parts to me are the end of chapter 2, and the part from the end of chapter 3 to the beginning of chapter 4. The rest is really forgettable.
    Oh and as a bonus, I think that Senua's Sacrifice is a pretty boring game and fails in making the game a "unique" video game experience.
