  • Do you and your partner struggle to get quality sleep TOGETHER? Or do you and your partner have particular sleeping styles or preferences that don't quite mesh well? You're not alone. Dr. Wendy Troxel is one of the leading voices in the field of couples and sleep, and as she explains, when you sleep in the same bed as someone else, your sleep has a profound impact on one another.
In this interview with Dr. Michael Breus, the two discuss the complexities of sleeping with a partner, how to navigate some tricky conversations about sleeping in separate rooms, and what solutions she recommends for partners seeking a solid night of sleep.
Dr. Troxel is a sleep scientist at the RAND Corporation, with Adjunct Professor positions at the University of Utah and University of Pittsburgh and licensed clinical psychologist with specialty training in sleep medicine. She is author of the book “Sharing the Covers: Every Couple’s Guide to Better Sleep”, which was recently named as one of the “7 sleep books to read” by the New York Times.

Thank you SO very much for covering these topics!
Appreciate you both; sleeping apart from my spouse, (for sleep reasons), has made me feel ashamed/embarrassed and this video has helped me feel so much more ‘normal’ for wanting to get good rest. (Even if that means I need to sleep separately from my husband in order to do so).

Great discussion! Sleeping with a partner can have both benefits and complexities. Communication and compromise are the key to these complexities. Discussing sleep preferences, experimenting with different solutions, and being understanding of each other's needs can significantly improve the sleep experience for both partners. Many thanks Dr. Michael and Dr. Wendy for the very helpful and valuable information you shared with us!🙌❤👍

Absolutely incredible conversation with a wealth of information! I took a class my senior year in college (circa 2009) about the Sociology of Sleep and there was _one_ book about couples and sleeping/ couples and bedtime routine. This is really an untapped market. Everyone should feel their most comfort in their bed and especially if a child(ren) is involved. People just keep on going just seeing what sticks instead of truly understanding themselves and their environment.
P.S. anyone know if there's more than that one book? It was like 120 pages, paperback.

Thanks for the feedback, and so glad you enjoyed the conversation! Dr. Troxel's research is super important; more people should be reading her work in college courses :)
