The Su-27 was wondering arround with no clue about where the Hornet was. If you watch the footage, the Russian turns arround because he is not able to see the EF-18 while the Hornet is above with the Su locked. The Spanish pilot proved to be very skilled, a couple of seconds after the approach he was over the Sukhoi fully stabilized.
@控え目 That's a really good point. Could well have been an escort. In which case the Russians were never in danger, quite the opposite. I suspect that Russia could accept NATO forces near them who do not have nuclear weapons. Spain, Belgium, Netherlands or maybe Italy. France, Britain and US will give them the willies. Germany? Forget about it.

@@jamallabarge2665 No it could not have been. Russians do not let NATO forces escort their leaders hahaha, and NATO leaders would never let russian jets escort them either. Ridicolous.
Here's how I would caption it: F-18: "hehehe I'm getting so much information hehehe" Minister inside plane: "this guy is so annoying" Su-27: "I gotchu fam"
it was prolly a military escort and handoff. Wing sway from Hornet to Su was akin to a salute/gesture of professional respect. Also why the skipped part of the footage.
That aircraft is a Spanish F-18 Hornet scrambled out of Siauliai air base in Lithuania, the Spanish sometimes rotate and send Eurofighter Typhoons instead of Hornets. The Spanish F-18 looks like its armed with 2 IRIS T and 2 AMRAAM 120 missiles. The Spanish air force was on NATO air policing duties over the Baltic sea and was scrambled because probably one or all of those Russian planes (including the escorts) were flying either without established flight plans and or transponders switched off in international airspace, close to NATO allied airspace. The Russians do this a lot to check and test NATO response times and radar coverage. They showed up on military radar and the Hornet was scrambled to take a look and ID the aircraft.
I was wondering what country that F-18 came from couldn't recognize the tail markings thank you for clearing that up.. from a soldier during the Cold War was all about readiness and how fast you could get to your designated area and set up.

Just perfect from the Spanish Hornet: started being pushed by the SU but ended up in an offensive position higuer than the SU and it's pilot still with fully visual both of Putin's aircraft and the defensive SU. If it was for real, it have been taken about few seconds to take the SU down.
I'd be waving at the Russian pilot. These guys don't want to kill each other.
Most pilots love this stuff and do it on request most of the times...for decades pilots do stunts to each other with no aggression whatsoever
and what if it was a gesture of respect from NATO? accompaning the plane?
Respect is a gesture that is necessary. That NATO ship was far too close.
It was an escort handover. Nothing hostile or disrespectful about this. Clickbait title.
ALL official russian media are saying that it was not procedure and the jet was chased off by the SU. By the way, NATO and Russia will probably never be so good friends that they let the others fighter planes fly 2 meters from their leaders. That would be a ridicolous situation.
@@jamallabarge2665 No it could not have been. Russians do not let NATO forces escort their leaders hahaha, and NATO leaders would never let russian jets escort them either. Ridicolous.

Yup! He was.
Perhaps...but as Doc. Brown would say, if this was a Back to the Future universe, "we're in a F-18 and he's in a SU-37, he'd rip through us like we were tin foil"
Can't SU-37 do that Cobra thing? It probably wouldn't have mattered, maybe striking from below is the actual advantageous spot.
@@frankiethebull8269 it's not, and the cobra maneuver is actually useless in combat because it completely drains your energy, you loose all your speed making you a sitting duck.

@@574wallace It had a couple of AAMRAMs on the fuselage mounts, but you're right. Situations like this happen often, usually in contested airspace near borders. All the Hornet was there to do was identify and monitor the aircraft. It just so happens that the plane being intercepted was carrying some high ranking Russians. If this was Putin's plane, I'd be surprised due to how close the Hornet was able to get.

Hardly. It was a passive aggressive manoeuvre. The pilot banked into the flight path of the other jet who climbed to avoid a collision. Unfortunately this would have given fire superiority to the aggressor. But resulted in a violation. The jet shadowing is a F18 based in Lithuanian, a very similar encounter occurred in 2017 when NATO planes escorted the Russian Defence Minister over the Baltic. This is just an aggressive escort handover.
