- Over the last week, the pitchforks have come out for the once-iconic-but-now-discount wetsuit brand Rip Curl after a post celebrating the pioneering transgender surfer Sasha Jane Lowerson.
The mob erupted after viral after anti-trans-women-in-sport activist Riley Gaines slammed Rip Curl as “crazzzyyyy”.
“You mean to tell me that Rip Curl dropped Bethany Hamilton for opposing men surfing in the women’s league then picked up male surfer who surfs in the women’s league as a women’s ambassador?” wrote Gaines.
Rip Curl and Bethany parted ways, it’s believed, because of Bethany’s opposition to trans-women in gals’ sports.
Calls to boycott Rip Curl grew from a murmur to a raw.
Skateboarder Taylor Silverman joined in the chorus, unsparing in her criticism of the New Zealand-owned company.
“According to Rip Curl this man is a ‘waterwoman’…reality is he’s just a mentally ill man making a complete mockery of actual women and “The “community” is so supportive that Rip Curl had to disable the comments!”
For context, Sasha Jane Lowerson is a talented strawberry blonde goofyfooter of middle age who created history last year when she added the Western Australian women’s longboard trophy to her mantlepiece where it sits alongside the trophy she won when she was still Ryan Egan.
Rip Curl had joined two other Australian swimsuit brands in a pivot to the queer market describing their trans ambassador as, “West Australian waterwoman who loves the freedom found in surfing, disconnecting from the mainstream, and the feeling of dancing on constantly changing waves… It’s a state of mind, always being ready to try something new, curious to seek out knowledge and learn the rules - and break them.”
Here, Chas Smith, who hates surfing, asks surfers to put aside the trans debate for moment and remember the truly oppressed victims of Rip Curl.

Is Bethany Hamilton just the bravest surfer ever? She went back in the ocean after the horrific injury she sustained, she surfs pipe with one arm! Now she is again one of the first, along with Kelly (who could never be accused of being a sheep) who is standing up for fairness in sports. This person can wear any swimsuit they wish, it shouldn’t bother anyone, but to compete against girls when they grew up a male is simply not fair.
It’s insane. Any logical person would agree.

'Anti-trans' is just a dishonest way to dismiss anyone with genuine concerns, ie. who supports trans people in general but thinks that sex is relevant in physical contests, or is worried about the effect on young girls (who already feel awkward in their bodies and have high rates of depression) if the media keeps showing them that only males can strive for the top women positions/opportunities. Very few people genuinely hate trans people at all, and even fewer hate them 'simply for existing.'
Another issue I have as a grandparent of teen and preteen girls is allowing bio males into woman/girl spaces i.e. toilets and changing rooms is allowing an all access pass to not only the delusional but also the deviant.Off topic but in the overall scheme of things.
Chas, Biological men competing in women's sports is simply unfair. For Bethany to be removed as the brand ambassador because she was standing up for women's rights in sports is infuriating. Get it together man.

Just because I don't want trans women in women's spaces, doesn't mean they need to say in their house. But in saying that, my tolerance is getting less because they are forcing themselves in our spaces. Maybe I'm a hypocrite. I mean, I call them 'she' and 'het' but I don't really believe they are. The way that you glossed over the crux of the “anti- trans” argument was lame. People do not dislike trans people, they simply don’t want biological males trans people competing against women. You should have covered that more so as not so seem biased.

Not too many people I know are anti transgander in fact no one gives a toss. The toss comes when transgender men compete against biological women in sports. If it was a dart or billiards comp no one would give a toss. But in surfing, athletics, weight lifting, swimming and boxing the biological women do give a toss. I stand with them. Why not just invent an open open class where anyone can compete and leave the girls alone. As for Bethany she's a worrior Godess in my view.

The issue is people are pissed because they believe a male shouldn't be competing against other females. So the problem is that the sporting universe needs to reframe the competitor categories. Define them based on sex not gender, and that resolves the issue - coz Sasha will never be able to meet the 100% female criteria. Sports would need to create a category just for them. Which would technically be fair, but lucrative or appealing? Maybe, maybe not.
Why this isn't discussed is a mystery.
Another reason to buy Feral or smaller brand suits…
It seems like an easy solution across all competitive physical sports (this doesn't include darts or billiards). A third division needs to be created, easy : Mens, Womens, and Other

There should be always be a separation of sexes, not genders, in organised sports.
Sex is biological & gender is how you feel and there is an undeniable hormonal male/female puberty difference that has developmental advantages.
I’ve never seen any furore over biological females trying to compete in male sports divisions which is presumably because those people recognise their disadvantage.
It just seems to be the “patriarchy” and its supporters attempting to control female sport.

Quick one here folks.. Once you transition you're "hormonally levelled" to the gender you identify as.
So Sasha has been pretty much "stripped" of her testosterone advantage.
Since she now has the estrogen levels of a cis gender woman and similarly the testosterone levels of a cis gender woman (yes folks we all have testosterone AND estrogen), Sasha is pretty much competing on a "level wave field".
If she identified as transgender and was not taking hormone replacement therapy, and directly benefited from testosterone, then sure, she'd have an advantage.
Most sporting committees are backflipping on their stance in regards to fairness, as equal hormone levels are simply not enough to create a level playing field. He has the physical advantage of years of development as a man, anyone with half an ounce of common sense can that.
