I'm looking at a 1983 Olds in Minnesota that appears to have a non-factory vinyl roof... thinking of removing it and preserving the underlying paint. Curious where you do your work and maybe be able to help.

@@66Gordo Thank you. If the vinyl is glued down I thought of initially using a heat gun to help get the vinyl off then maybe Goo Gone and/or an eraser wheel to get the rest to preserve the paint; your thoughts would be appreciated.

Trying to get the trim back on and I am confused as to how it attaches? Seems like the clips are super tight to the car ? I didn't take the stuff of so trying to get it back on is like foreign to me 🤣🤣🤣 is there a trick?
The trim should slide on the grooves of the clips.

Yeah just clean it up real good underneath and try to keep that old one if it's in good shape for the pattern for the new one. Did you take out the side windows?

I'd find a upholstery shop in your area. Ask them how much they'd charge then decide from there.
how do you stretch it out and tuck the vinyl for the rear window
I put some heat on the vinyl with a heat gun to stretch it. Then tuck it
So you just apply your adhesive and stretch and tuck it behind the plastic on the rear window any tips like starting from the front starting from the back in the middle

You can get the foam at any upholstery supply shop. It's called Landau foam. Thanks for the comment

How do i remove the plastic holding the top down around the back window without braking it

I'm not sure what piece you are talking about but if you can't fix it just Google it or look at ebay and see if you can get another piece. Or try a junkyard

What fabric and padding did you use from Albrights? And how much material and has it held up well?
Used a marine grade viynl and closed cell foam.
Do you remove the part around the back glass to fold the vinyl under ? Thinking about doing mine myself on my 84 cutlass. Im preparing for paint as we speak and the back window trim is the only thing im not sure how to get the vinyl under and be stretched right. Sorry for my english i speak french. Thank you

I recently had my vinyl top done, which it's done great but iffy about him tucking the vinyl under the trim on the sides. Before my trim was nicely firm on the body, now it's literally sitting ontop of the vinyl and you can see it sticking out. I wanted to ask if that's the proper way to have it? I hate how sloppy it looks.
You think he would have trimmed it down so it wouldn't be sticking out the side. You might want to check the clips on the trim and see if any are broke. They become brittle and he may have broken a couple while taken them off. That would make it not be secure completely. Just a thought. Thanks for watching and commenting
Yeah I was thinking that, on that note he did let me know that the corner trim clips did break. So he pretty much drilled them in to stay sturdy. I might just purchase a new set and install them in myself. Do you think I should slit the vinyl with a razor that way it cuts off literally at the trims so that the vinyl isn't under the trim?

I guess if you are looking to remove the vinyl top it might be. It's is a little bit of work to do it but not real bad. Thanks for watching and commenting
If you mean to remove the vinyl roof and make it a hardtop, you need more then just grinding rivets off. You’ll need the rear window trim from a non vinyl roof car, quarter glass from non vinyl roof car, you’ll need to remove the rear glass and add rivets on the inside lip for plastic pieces that mount your hard top rear window trim. Plus fix all the imperfect seams that the factory didn’t make pretty. It’s a lot of work.
What’s the name of that black piece that’s under the vinyl around the window after taking the vinyl off? Asking because I’m searching for one.
This car had black landau foam under the viynl when I took it of. The quarter windows had black sealant around them when they came out. Hope that answered your question

Depends i got quote from 500-1500 if u have material its cheaper u can get the vynil from joanns fabric
Do you recommend getting it painted before or after installing the new top?
I'd get it painted first but would make sure you check under the top for holes or rust. That way you can get it done while it's getting painted

Hey Gordo, do you kno if all g bodys quarter windows are the same? Will a cutlass quarter window fit a regal?

@@66Gordo ok I'm trying to just convert my vinyl top to hard top but need hardtop quarter glass to make it work
@@dpk3144 look at pictures of each type of Gbody and you can clearly tell the cutlass quarter windows look nothing like a regal. The only Gbodies with the same shape quarter glass is a Monte Carlo and a Grand Prix depending on year.

It's personal preference really.
@@66Gordo that’s true. But do you know the cons and pros for each?? I heard the cloth one lasts a lot longer.
Some people like the viynl cause it's easier to clean and repels elements somewhat better. It is harder to repair and will likely need replaced if it rips or tears though. Cloth absorbs dirt or other elements but can usually be repaired instead of replaced. Both usually last by how they are treated and the elements they are in. If they are taken care of and garaged they last awhile.

I think I ordered 2 or 3 yards. It's one piece of material. No sewing on it.

Can I still remove my vinyl top off without talking the side windows out?
The vinyl is tucked and glued down under those windows. If you're gonna replace the top it needs to be tucked back under there again. It's kind of a pain but it's the best way to do it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope it helped

You can get the vinyl at any upholstery supply store. Use marine grade so it can stand the weather and sun. This one is just one piece. Use the old one as a pattern when you take it off if you can
How do you remove vinyl top trips on top? I have a loose side one, the other side is fine
Did you mean the trim? On top? Usually you can slide it off or else pry one of the sides. Lots of times the plastic pieces holding the trim on may be brittle so becareful but you Usually end up breaking one or two. You can buy new ones though. Hopefully that helps
@@66Gordo yea on the top on the driver's side is lose while the other side tight. When I'm on freeway by the quarter window the trim it rattles and it wasn't like that before. How much clips should I buy or would I replace all of them?
I can't remember if they sell them single or by the set. You probably have a broken one under there causing it to be lose. I'd buy a few if they sell them individually just to have some extras

I dont remember if it was 1/8 or 1/4 in foam.
