Technique #2015: lay a paper towel over the contact cement then soak it with mineral spirits when the cement is dry and old. Let it sit for quite some time. If it's really bad, lay plastic wrap over it and it can soak for hours without drying up.

I was the one who exclusively did tops in our shop for a few years in the late 70’s. One year I did 1000. Most were padded Cadillacs Buicks and Oldsmobiles. I have the arthritis in my hands to prove it. (And I did buy a few windshields.)

I'm willing to bet the owner just purchased the car recently and the seller did the cheapest/quickest install to maximize his profit of the sale and the current owner is now paying a "second time" to have you install it properly. When I bought my Alfa I waited until I found one that wasn't "restored" so I knew no corners were cut in the restoration. Nice install and beautiful results.

Clauss scissors that have been sharpened 100 times and a Pfaff sewing machine were old and cool. Before he died he got a Hitachi that he thought was really nice. I'm thinking more about upholstery since my second heart attack and a woman told me her husband wished for an auto upholstery shop around here. We only have a boat and boat cover place.

Great job. Wow you really explained every thing so great. Would you mind saying what vinyl and thread to use for a vinyl top please?

Hello Michael, Thank you so much! For the vinyl, is specifically made for vinyl tops. It's called landau vinyl. Most upholstery suppliers should have it. I use size 92 bonded nylon or polyester thread. Please keep liking and watching!

This is the best instructional video I have ever seen. Thank you so much for being so thorough.! I have been a master mechanic for many years even done my own paint jobs but I have never tackled a vinyl top I was afraid of the sewing part and the stretching part. You made it all very clear thank you thank you thank you. You just save me $2,500 from having to take it to a an upholstery shop. Is there a certain type of vinyl I should get? And where should I get it from?

Owner's Tip: If your car has a worn or torn vinyl top, repair or replace ASAP. The rip will allow moisture to build up between the vinyl and metal roof. The moisture will eventually rust out your roof leading to more repairs.

Many times the roof is rusted out under the vinyl top. Factory tops often were poorly painted underneath.
The drip rail stainless moldings are often NOT easy to remove without denting or kinking them, and can be one piece, not three like this Nova. I made a tool to carefully remove them without damage.

You heard me laugh , did I you also hear the waterfall of chocolate milk falling from my nostrils prior to my laugh ?!
That poor guy with that Nova was scammed .
I have never seen one without ANY adhesive. At least give it a sprits . I guess they think the pull of the vinyl will prevent it from pulling .
    Just wow .
    Great video .
What would be your recommendation be for using an 1/8” closed cell foam under another material ?

Hello Doc, Thank you so much! Yea, amazing right? Yep, 1/8" or 1/4" closed cell landau pad is what's used for padded tops. Please keep liking and watching!
