  • Tommy from MuscleCar shows how to get rid of one of those annoying holdovers from the Muscle Car era: a vinyl top. Learn how to get rid of that nasty glue that doesn't want to let go! Then after some body work on our Monte Carlo G-Machine, Kevin from Trucks swings by to lend a hand with the paint job.

Reminds me of your Buick Regal build. I'm glad that the Landau vinyl and trim tabs were already removed on my '82 Monte Carlo.

My husband loves y'all's work. He bought a 70 Monte Carlo 2 months ago with a nice body and interior but no engine or trans. You guys have given him some great ideals. He was not sure what color to paint it . He has been doing paint and body work for 35 year's. He hopes you don't mind him using some of your ideals on his paint work

    Excellent work and tool/product usage.
Personally don't care for the green stripe though.
    Love the black color.
I once owned an 83' MONTE SS,White/Baby Blue new 'til 89'.
    Loved that car.
In those six years, the only mechanical failure was the cooling fan clutch.,replaced that with a clutchless fan. Was just a little louder was only drawback.
Replaced it with a Red/Red 76' OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME BROUGHAM,350/350,loaded.
Loved that car too, drive it fir seven yrs. until carbeurator and HEI problems bothered me too much.
    ✌️❤️

I love the fact that they are saving these cars, but there are some steps that I am not sure why are value engineered out of the project. Such as not removing all the glass, and trim like the tail lights and whatever else was left in.

I'm probably one of the few that grew up liking the granny green. Probably because my Dad bought a new '72 Monte Carlo in the same color combo as this one, but we had the rare optional fender skirts (and my sister and her hubby got a hardly used '71 in the tan/brown/brown but with buckets and console but also had the fender skirts, that they removed).....and before that we had a new '69 Chevy Impala same granny green combo and before that (YES) our '68 Dodge Charger 383 was the same color combo lol. It didn't stop there but I will for you.

In the mid part of the 1970 model year, Chevrolet got rid of the front moulding on the vinyl top and ran the vinyl all the way to the windshield moulding. So that car rolled down the line early. I owned a 1970 Monte Carlo from 1991-2010. It was a early build from September 1969 with the same top. When I restored the car from 1998-2000, I had to repair some spots below where the top is, but in the interest of keeping the car original, I had a new top put on it. It was a pretty color, gold with black top and a “Sandalwood” colored interior.

    @richardb1791 4 месяца назад

I did the opposite. I completely restored a 67 mustang with a 289 V8 and I added the vinyl top. They are trouble in the long run, but look very classy on 60's cars in most cases.

    I've removed some vinyl tops.
Sometimes you have to plug weld holes. Back up the hole with a penny,
    it won't stick.

As I sit here and ponder what project is next on my 72 Monte, I thank PN for some tips I can use. My vinyl top is in great condition, however, the sheet metal underneath is bubbling and I can feel it under the vinyl. Has to be addressed, but I'm afraid to peel off sheetmetal with the vinyl!! 😮.

There is no way installing a vinyl top with all that trim is less expensive than painting. My best guess is that the vinyl top was marketed as a way to keep the interior cooler as it shielded the sun. Most cars back then did not have air conditioning.

Would've been better to go with a water based emerald green color, with a fully blue printed 454ci big block v8 with a 6-speed automatic, a true dual 4" exhaust, and with either a GM 14-bolt single wheel rear axle or a custom Ford 9".

Nice overhaul, but what a shame... Getting rid of the VINYL, makin the MC lookin like an average car! I wish I could order such an iconic vinyl roof for my modern daily rides! D/A/G

That "gulf green" did have to go, but personally, I think the other 1972 GM color called "sequoia green" was a great looking color on almost any GM vehicle from 1972.

Great decision to remove the vinyl top and go with a two-tone. But a question: why didn't you remove the rear quarter panel caps / extensions? And leaving the taillights in? Then painting with them in place? Seems odd but always willing to learn a new technique.

I have a love hate relationship with vinyl tops, on the bigger muscle cars there nice because they break up the color so it not such a huge one color paint blob if the top is a different color although triple black cars are nice

Vinyl tops were the look of the day much like big chrome bumpers were the look of the 50s. Not exactly my speed, but one day a collector will shake their head because some idiot removed the factory vinyl top.
