Any product you like to use to remove glue and foam leftover ? I removed my '87 mc vinyl top, i suspected some rust between the window and quarter window. What a mess ... big hole each side. I tought previous owner half assed the body job before replacing the top but by rewatching your video its the same. The glue aint hard so sand paper will foul, thinner removes more paint than glue, methyl etyl works but it's far from magic.
I found a place that actually sells little tiny screws that you screw into the metal and the head of the screw looks exactly like those clip retainer studs. They are actually for doing this type of job so you can put the chrome trim on the vinyl deleted cars.
Great video! I had a 1985 Grand Prix a while back and I discovered the hard way that attempting to remove the vinyl top from one of these cars is totally NOT worth the effort. On average, a brand new top will only cost $200 to completely replace at an upholstery or restoration shop... a much more viable solution to a ragged, unsightly vinyl top.
I did this to my grand prix. The hardest part was removing the opera windows to get the vinyl out from behind them. I just cut the rivits off and used filler to hide the holes. I got the window trim off of a regal and just siliconed it to the glass. It looked factory after the new paint job.
I've often wondered about this delete process. I've never been a fan of vinyl roofs but it looks like it would be better to start off with a non VR G-body. I tell you what though, good deals on G-bodies are harder to come by. I've started looking around for a weekend project car and pickins are getting thin at least on a good solid G-body. The Regals are the most popular and expensive, I think a Cutlass is the way to go.

Hello, I have a 1979 old Cutler supreme thanks for your video although I’m saying it nine years late lol was wondering if you still had any parts to those vehicles specifically the plastic trim on the land out top that goes around the back window that’s covered up
Excellent video. Good job! Very helpful in seeing how 1977-88 G-body Landau vinyl tops were installed during this period. Would also be interesting to see a similar video showing difference in attachment system for 1960s-1976 GM vinyl tops. No doubt the system changed over time. The conversion going either way -- adding or removing -- is doable. Just need to be realistic re: how much work is involved.
I have an 85 Grand Marquis and want to do a paintjob, but it wouldn't look too good unless I also fix the vinyl top which is pretty worn, down to the padding on the sides and back. Looks like a lot of work though and I'm not sure if I would be comfortable putting money into that with the knowledge that something serious could happen at some point.
Thank you! I got my 79 monte with out the vinyl top and the rivets still. Just got filler piece with out rivet and chrome window trim. I was thinking of siliconing in place little plastic tabs to hold the chrome on. Thanks for breaking it all down! Helps make sense!
Looking to remove the vinyl top off my 82 cutlass supreme, I had seen before but forget where I seen it but when they took the vinyl top off instead of finding the chrome trim they just reinstalled & painted the plastic that comes in the vinyl from the rear window, anyone else seen or heard of someone do the same? 🤔🤔
On my 1980 oldsmobile delta 88 royal brougham. I took the last vinyl rear top off .Left the chrome trim on across the top that use to hold it down.My plastic piece has broken in to pieces but i reinforced the back with the bondo wire mesh and built it up with fiberglass to get the vinyl top puffed up look you get when having a top tucked under the rear windshield plastic piece. Looks right .I had brought the chrome trim at one time but didn't fit right plus you had to add studs to hold the window clips in place also you had gaps at the corners.

Can you do a vid on removing the rear window with a landau top? I need 2 reseal the back window on my 80 ttop cut & the shop is talking about the landau top needs 2 be removed! I refuse 2 believe Gm would've made it that difficult!
Believe it or not yes you have to remove the top because it is tucked around a plastic trim that lines the glass. I suggest taking it to an automotive interior shop that does tops and ask them as you might be able to release the top around the trim then remove the glass.
I deleted the vinyl top but kept the vinyl look.Leaving on the hold down chrome top trim and fiberglassing the plastic piece to get the puffed up look the vinyl top gave off.And painted the top black ,before i had painted the half top autumn maple red like the original vinyl top color was.

And don't forget that all that factory bondo/filler in those unfinished joints needs to be COMPLETELY removed and redone. That filler is porous and over time will absorb water and it filters down to the metal underneath causing rust beneath the filler. So, just because the filler looks okay, doesn't mean there's not moisture and rust forming underneath it.
