Vivien Leigh, the Queen.
VDS--I SAW THIS SHOW ON BROADWAY AND THIS WAS ONE OF MY HAPPIEST NIGHTS IN THE THEATRE. VIVIEN LEIGH WAS EXCELLENT IN A PART THAT SHOWED HER TALENTS AT THEIR BEST. GREAT BEAUTY AND TALENTED ACTRESS. I NEVER TIRE OF LISTENING HER SPEAK OR SING. WE WERE LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH A TALENT.
Qué joya!!! Mi querida y adorada Vivien Leigh!!!
What a treasure! Her ability to transform into doing a musical character part like this just helps to underscore her abilities as an actress - she was not just a beautiful face.
OH man I wished this was filmed!! I read that Miss Vivien won the Tony for this show.
Wonderful! For someone not known as a singer, Vivien pulls these songs off just fine. Too bad this show isn't available on video in its entirety....I envy the folks below who saw this live in the Sixties.
She'd have been amazing in
Applause!
My beautiful Actrees Vivien! I adore her! Always in my Heart! The Best Actrees in history!
Hello, dear! At the first moment I started listen to Vivien singing here I remembered this. You read my mind! I love Vivien cutie voice in Gone With The Wind! And this video with Tovarich extracts is total treasure! Thanks to the author!
I thank you for this wonderful video. I saw an old movie--not musical--of this story. But this one sounds better, and something great to see. The British actors seem to be able to do it all--sing, dance, drama, comedy. Such a treat to hear and see them.
OMG! Thanks for share this treasure!!! Thanks A lot!!!!! I admire her so much!!! Thanks
What a charmer she was: )
I didn't know Vivien really sang that much. I mean obviously she did in GWTW but that was like 2 lines. She sounds good for 63' and holding that accent!
She was about 49 in 1963..
Vivien Leigh almost turned the show down before reading the script ("Ridiculous! I can't sing.") Fortunately, her lover, actor John Merivale, pointed out Rex Harrsion's performance in "My Fair Lady" and how she also would scold Robert Helpmann for giving up his dancing. How wrong she was about her musical theater talents! She suffered from manic drepression for most of her life and tuberculosis took her from us way too soon. Couldn't you imagine her going to town in a Sondheim musical?
great insights--fabulous actress--yes, I can see her in Sondheim. what layers she would have added to it.
A note for those who say hard-headed women aren't attractive:it's your misfortune to not know how to appreciate a strongwoman.Weak men always fail to discover the soft side of a strong woman and how interesting she is
I loved this show in 1963 and I love it now. Please, if you can, could you post the entire score? I don't think RUclips has it all in one place.
Who wrote the music and lyrics for this musical?
Music by Lee Pockriss, lyrics by Anne Croawell. I believe it was the only Broadway show they did together, though they had also done a musical version of The Importance of Being Ernest on TV and then off-Broadway.
It's too bad that Vivan's voice sounds like a chain smokers voice...that low pitch which can come with age but gets lower with smoking.
