I would like to have seen Vivien in it, too. Somewhere I read that she was actually better for the role because Elizabeth was too young for the character, who was supposed to be closer to Vivien's age.

Yes. I can understand how you feel. Her life had incredible highs & lows. Heartbreaking....to say the least. Just yesterday at our local Barnes & Noble, I browsed thru a book about the lives & marriage of Laurence Olivier and Vivian Leigh ("Truly, Madly"). She obviously was bipolar or had a similar mental affliction. Today she probably could have been helped by the many medications they now have for such illnesses. So sad.

@@jennyp4934 I mean that Taylor was a `STudio Princess` and that Leigh as a renegade. Selznick never wanted Leigh to make another film after `Wind` as he felt it might tarnish her Scarlett O`Hara image. Of course this is true but she was an actress after all and WON (to Selznick`s dismay) another Oscar for `Streetcar`. Taylor was a `Studio Princess` and cattered for all the politicking necessary to advance one`s career. If you read about circumstances in Colombo when shooting this film you will see that Leigh was `driven` into a breakdown and Taylor was right there ready and eager to jump into the role. There is one scene which is Leigh from the rear that passes for Taylor in the film. The director I guess thought noone would notice. Boy, that shot tells the tale. The difference between Leigh and Taylor in one shot, and from the rear. Leigh is a gazelle. Taylor is well, NOT a gazelle...

Vivien Leigh ended up being the most highly-paid location double of all time, when, unfortunately, after suffering a breakdown when the film returned to Hollywood to shoot interiors, she had to be replaced. Reportedly, Jean Simmons and Claire Bloom were also considered as replacements, but Elizabeth Taylor got the role. Certain scenes in the film (including one where Vivien did a snake-charming bit in the local marketplace) were not duplicated for the re-shoot (which was done entirely in Hollywood, using background footage shot in Ceylon). As a result, the film lost a lot of its on-location aura. Incidentally, Vivien Leigh was born and spent her early childhood in India. She suffered from both tuberculosis and bipolar disorder. She was one hell of an actress.

It must've been terrible for her back then, as there was no medication. Now scientific research has caught up with the illness.
