  • Landscape photography requires you to have one camera and a tripod. That's about all you need to thrive as a landscape photographer, and this is how it has always been for me. So, what happened in the past 12 months which means I now have an arsenal of different cameras? In this video I explain why I own 4 Fujifilm cameras, 2 Canon Cameras, an Intrepid 4x5 camera and a Hasselblad 501cm film camera. Have I gone mad?

This is the thing with enthusiastic photographers. They tell themselves "one day, I will make a good living off of it". 10 years later they figure out that they could have indeed had a good living, but instead they bought 19 cameras and sets of lenses to go with.

I share your sentiment about the transition. I had been a dedicated Nikon shooter starting with an F in 1959 through to F6, to D3x and on to D810. In the past 5 years I have, like you, been drawn into the Fujifilm environment, now with 5 bodies and 15 lenses, and on track to move into the GFX world with a 50R

Not trying to change anyone's mind but I do want to point out that a Canon mirrorless with the drop in filter adapter is a great option to consider. Keep on using your EF lenses (which still perform great), and no more glass plates or screw on filters on the front of your lenses. It's a clever solution that I'd like to see more of.

I'm just a really bad amateur photographer but there's some funny parallels in this video with my camera journey. I used to use a Canon Rebel DSLR as my main camera but I started to grow tired of photography while using it due mainly to the size and weight. In an effort to revitalize my interest I decided to go mirrorless and cut down on the size of my gear. I settled on the Fujifilm X-T10 with the tiny XF27mm pancake lens and was hooked with the first 5 shots on my first vacation with it. I upgraded to the X-T30 recently but I still wanted something for "fun". So for the first time in my photography life I bought another camera for as you say "an indulgence". I bought a very old and very used X-Pro1 because I became obsessed with the rangefinder style I've read so much about and the hybrid viewfinder. It's been so much fun I can see myself getting an X-Pro3 one day if the prices ever drop.

    • @davegrenier1160

@@gregs2466 I have two Canon Ftbs and an A-1, with a dozen lenses. Almost sold the lenses years ago, but when I found they were going for dirt I decided to not sell them. I just recently went with a Sony A7RII, and now I'm shooting with my "vintage" lenses (that are now worth ten times what they were valued at before the advent of mirrorless cameras) and I'm glad I didn't sell them. The Canon bodies (two with non-operational 50mm lenses on them) are now on a bookcase on display, along with a Nikon microscope and a really cool-looking (a lot of copper) Zalman CPU cooler from an old computer build. Old stuff can make interesting bric-a-brac while also serving as mementoes of times past (one of the Ftbs was with me during my time in the military and on climbing trips to the Mt. Blanc range in France, so it has some history behind it).

I think the word you were searching for at 13:50 was "jaded" and there's nothing like a new method of photography to shake that feeling. But don't blame your old-school approach to getting older. Good to hear you’re into older used Cameras Tom. I would NEVER buy a new camera in the same way I would NEVER buy a new car. There are some mega used bargains to be had, and at the rate rival companies bring out new gear these days, new ones are out of date almost as fast as they’re released. My next camera will probably be a 5DS R. 50mp joy for around £1500, and I already have the glass.

I totally understand your reasoning behind Hasselblad 501CM and honestly it touched me. I'm not a professional photographer, always used my phone to shoot photos. Photography never interested me much. I just got into film photography and I have a feeling that it changed my whole life, my view on so many things. Not to sound cheesy, it showed me that sometimes you need to stop. Look around you and think. The manual usage of this camera is so satisfying. I've got a few cameras, some older like Lubitel 166 and Zenit E, and some newer like canon T70 and EOS 300 and the most satisfying for me is the Lubitel. 12 frames, whole manual settings. You can't just shoot it. You must stop, choose correct film, meter the light, set correct exposure, think twice before shooting. It is so awesome in a completely new way for me. That waiting for a developement and that satisfaction every good photo gives! I just started watching your channel and I love it. It gives me great motivation and whole new ideas. Thank you for your work and keep doing it!

My personal opinion, I miss you doing more photography, I little too much filming angles and you don't seem to enjoy your trips anymore (I think is because you're preoccupied on filming too much) your videos are great and beautiful but, remember why you started doing photography. good luck mate, you're still the best!

I think it is social media that has ruined photography, not technology. Coming off social media several years ago (in particular the ones where I posted photos) has been a revelation in realising how much pressure I'd subconsciously placed on myself to capture certain subjects/scenes; edit in a certain way; post images frequently; monitor feedback on posts, etc. and I'm just a humble amateur photographer who has never made a penny from my photos. So I would (and do) always say to fellow amateurs/beginners - use whatever tools you like, but capture what *you* want. Oh and, print your images!

I went exactly the same way - Nikon for 30 years and now XTs and GFX 50. For anyone who likes having old school dials on their cameras, the 50S is the best of the Fuji MF bodies ergonomically. The combination of sensor and lenses gives a look that is totally different to any of the high MP 35mm cameras - in the best possible way.

Moral of the tale? It’s what you do with it that counts! Really doesn’t seem to matter what “it” is - cameras, cars, bikes, running shoes, power tools ; for me, it’s guitars, amps and pedals - it’s always the same rationale. It’s the marginal to huge variations in feel, spec, quality, and yes, the self esteem boost, that make that adrenaline pump just that bit harder. Suspect the difference is how we explain ourselves to our life partners. Me, to my shame, have had purchases delivered to work, and then surreptitiously slipped them into the house. If challenged, the response is, “ Oh this? No, I’ve had it for ages. You’ve probably just not noticed...”
Not too proud of the passive-aggressiveness of that, but the implied criticism “perhaps you just don’t care enough to notice”works a treat! PS: may need a sofa to sleep on if this gets out ...

Brotha! This was a great video. I'm glad I stuck with it 'til the end. I am same as you in some regards, I enjoy film quite a bit more lately (frustrating as hell too) and find myself much more aware of everything. Film costs money, every shutter press comes at a non refundable price. I find myself striving to get better at it, since its more disciplined to get good or great snapshots. Also I swear I own a camera form every brand (maybe not) but I've got a lot and always want a lot more. They are tools and toys in a way for me. I actually grow too love them. Although I have to ask myself sometimes exactly what is this new camera I want going too do for me that one that I already have wont do or wont do as good and do I truly need better or just want a newer model for the sake of getting new just because? I love how you explained in detail why you have all of them. Id love to get to the level your at though someday. Thanks again.

The scratches on your Canon lenses are nothing. Definitely invisible on final photos. All the EF glass works flawlessly on the R5 and R6, no need to upgrade everything immediately. I switched from the 5d4 to the R5 and it's a masterpiece of a camera..

Inspiring as always Thomas. Question, since you like to crop to a 1:1 or 4:5 format, how do you know, in the viewfinder, or screen, where the crops will be to achieve a precise composition? Do you just estimate or do you have another process?

Long-term viewer of each of the f4 gang and a tech lawyer in Seattle. Yea. I "know" all the guys about whom you read. More importantly. I couldn't agree more. As I'm aging, and absolutely in this area, I'm increasing finding myself less than enamored with "big tech" in just about all areas. In this one? I really just don't want Apple making creative decisions for me. Of course. One can choose to avoid the negatives, but, in reality, to do so requires a dedicated effort.
Since I was 10, I've taken photos in all formats from a homemade pin camera to 4x5 field to the legendary AE-1 to the current latest and greatest.
    I often miss Paul Simon.
    Kodachrome 25.
    It was the bomb.
It was also a lot of fun.
Now, I actively make room for "old time" fun, but it's not often easy to do.
Good on you for your creative curiosity. 👍.

If you could ever "love" a film, Kodachrome 25 is it. INTENSE colors and resolution out to Pluto.... yummy. But pushing Tri-X to 1600 ASA is fun too....

Me too, working in the tech world sort of pushes me to older technologies instead 😂 After 5 years of digital I bought a Nikon F80 (less than $100 and takes all my modern Nikon lenses!), and was as excited as a child unwrapping candy when I got my first roll back. And it's black and white, just like what I learned from Ted Forbes' channel years and years ago. Bought another TLR not too long ago and waiting for the film I want to test it out.

    • @wallybeep
      @wallybeep 3 года назад +2

@@manuthchek Totally! It is increasingly possible for tech to sort things - and it does a good, if not great job. Imagine a video strip where each cell is a perfectly exposed scene, each with massive resolution and all the rest. Indeed, with repect to the technical aspect of photo taking, I can easily forsee the day when a monkey can deliver files that are extraordinary, interpreted by the right computer hander - a task itself that can conceptually and eventually be automated.
      Where is the fun?
I have recently been called out by a friend of mine - a CEO of a Silicon Valley tech company and a life-long photographer. He's always all jazzed about the latest and greatest hardware and software.
My eyes have started to glaze over - and, in contrast, I'm researching wet plate photography of yesteryear. Yes. It is super inticing to upgrade to the new Sony or Canon, but at some level it's a matter of dimishing return, no?
I worked hard to understand reciprocity failure years ago. I even had a hard-copy cheat sheet I took with me on shoots.
How many even know what that challenge is?
      Not many.
I don't diminish a bit those younger who are fully into what the technology can do for them.
That said, and it may not matter to anyone but me, I can do things still that they never will even need to contemplate.
      ... and so it goes.

    • @manuthchek
      @manuthchek 3 года назад +1

@@wallybeep True, if one already has a somewhat modern DSLR (anything from 2012) and doesn't care about printing huge sizes, low light or video, there's so little reason to upgrade anymore. People wonder why I never upgrade my D610, and I have it for years. Sure it's nice to have a Z7 or anything more modern but, what would I gain and is it worth the price? More megapixel is better but then we've had enlarged 35mm prints that look okay. My carbureted motorcycle from 2000 still works fine, arguably more reliable than the latest models since there are just less parts to fail.
Also shooting film kinda reveals who is skilled and who is not. There's a pro in my area with a 35mm rangefinder, well let's just say his photos suck according to anyone with a more refined knowledge of art or photography. How many times have I met so-called pros not knowing how to expose for a scene...
Photography is to me somewhat going in a similar direction as music, where everything gets electronic, smoothed out without any sense of uniqueness and identity. On the other hand you can have many musicians play the same piece off the same sheet music and the results will be all different. I'll really miss the old times if it comes the day when only electronic music exists.

Echoes of my experience. Sold my Canon 6D and lenses last year for a GFX50S. Some sellers/buyers remorse when I look back on the old images. But the files coming out of the GFX are stunning. Interested in what your next GFX lens will be. You will need something shorter than the 100-200mm once the Mk4 goes. So either the 32-64mm or 45-100mm could be your next lens. Be aware that there is a strong rumour that Fuji will put out a wide zoom (something like 20-36mm) this year, which would nicely complete your trinity when funds allow. This is what I will be doing.
