I Bought a New Camera to Replace my Canon 5D MKIV

- Today I go outside to test my new camera, which is a Fujifilm GFX 50R with the Fujinon GF 100-200mm Lens. This camera will be the replacement of my much-loved Canon 5D MKIV which I have owned for many years. Unfortunately, my test doesn't quite go to plan as I battle ferocious winds and snow storms which force me to shoot handheld: not ideal, but I hope you enjoy my video. 10% off your first Squarespace website or domain:

The rare Thomas Heaton handheld photos. And even rarer moment where he realizes you don't need a tripod for everything. Loving it!
But, he didn't get a keeper.
@@johnsmith1474 he got two?
@@jacobhunter9107 - No, but thanks for asking.
@@johnsmith1474 Yes, two. You're welcome
Keep it down guys, James Popsys might get to hear this. 😂😂
OUTSTANDING choice! You're going to love this camera, it's really usable in the field
"That will be replacing my Canon 5D MkIV..." yehyeh.... we've heard that before.... ;)
He's got "new" cameras before. Usually to reduce the weight of his kit on long hikes. He'll be using his Canon again in a month.
@@youareslick Hahaha Eat fuji's shorts Canon Fanboi...
@@youareslick Actually, he will use the Fuji TX-4 for lightweight shooting as he did in Nepal...
Would probably work better both being black and white?
@@minisla ...hmmm??? Yea!
At 3:20, those subtle smiles you gave us, especially when you were talking about „Shooting medium format, with a long lens, handheld“, those were really contagious to me. True excitement and happiness. Real feelings, I loved that!
Allways have a smile on my face watching your videos. Thank you for sharing. :)
I'm sitting at work today looking out the window at the snow and I thought man I would love to down my local beach taken some pics. When I get home and logged onto your channel I find that your on my local beach, although don't think I would of gotten out the car. Great pics Thomas glad you braved it.
Love how the steps pop-in-out of that delica
So happy for you that you got this beast of a camera. If anyone, you deserve the best there is!
Gorgeous switch of gear Thomas ! Looking forward for the next big aventures in the Lake District, Iceland, or another hot destination far from these icy-cold temperatures !
Love the light coming through the clouds in the photo!
Seems like a great choice, my man. I could see the new small-body 100 being a killer second body to have in your kit. I've been contemplating making the switch as well, but it all depends on what Canon's next high-resolution body looks like.
Thank you for sharing the video. All I see that passion makes everything possible. And that encourages me to go out with minimum gears in either the worst weather or a long commute. Final images are amazing.
I've owned nothing but vans for the last fifty years. By now you know that they are the perfect landscape photography accessory. A word of advice, if I may; DON'T SLAM THE SLIDING DOOR. They're vulnerable to damage and extremely difficult to adjust and (heaven forbid) repair.
I nearly bought a JDI Delica here in Western Canada, but chose an 04 Sprinter instead. Six times around the world (equivalent) so far, so good.
Have fun with your new Fuji!
If you get a high end Delica, they have electric sliding doors!
Wonderful, as always, Thomas. Thank you for the ongoing inspiration.
Enjoyed this. Great seeing the conditions, we've been contending with about -6 windchill in West Wales, still short sleeve weather. Cheers.
Welcome to the club. An excellent choice of camera and lens - looking forward to seeing more results from this combo.
Awesome! Love the medium format aspect ratio, can't wait to see more.
I was waiting for you to get the GFX system. So stoked to keep watching you. Glad you found your home with Fuji!
Thank you for the video. Glad to see how we the photographers face challenges of the weather. This video just brought down to Earth and so much more realistic! Thank you! You mentioned the first photo not any good. I kind of liked it. The bird fighting against the wind was cool. all the photos were fantastic!
It's -35 here without factoring the wind chill. I love having the entire landscape to myself, enjoy a nice cup of tea and take some pictures. Congrats on the new camera, hopefully it will rekindle your passion and produce many more excellent photos.
Fantastic choice. I've been using the same combo with amazing results
What a stunning piece of kit that is. Amazingly detailed images on another level. I really look forward to your work with this........it will be something else! Top Job Sir Thom!
All the high res cameras are close enough as to be equal for art purposes.
Just ordered your book, anything to help in this difficult time and a collection of beautiful photos as a bonus!
Congrats on the new camera Thomas! I look forward to the future beautiful compositions you will show us
Happy new camera, looking forward to the images you capture 👍🏻
The second photograph, in particular, is wonderful. Very emotive. Pretty darn nice for your first few photographs with this camera.
Watching this video and wishing we were as warm as you are Thomas. In Chicago we have a high of 2F today. Walked the dog at-7F today (about -18C). Cheers friend
YES! fantastic, look forward to seeing some prints
Although it's SO hard to film in such conditions, I just love photographing in such weather and also have to make some video - it feels so deserved when you actually get a final product put together :)
Can't speak to the filming part, but I enjoy watching these types of videos from both of you guys. Helps reinforce my own drive to get out in sometimes "not ideal" weather...which we get a lot here in the (American) Midwest! 😂
i guess Im asking randomly but does someone know a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly forgot the password. I love any help you can offer me!
@Leonel Judah Instablaster :)
@Winston Jamir i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Winston Jamir It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you really help me out :D
Congrats Thomas on the new camera....Glad you choose medium format....
You my friend have chosen a fantastic camera and you will love it, you will give up on film, lol ! Your images will have a new found level of image quality that will astound you. That lens is killer too.
Amazing! And i wondered for so long why you not have one! Cheaper than a new R5 but absolut "stunning" images....I also own one, but now, thanks to you, i really can see what this beast can do!
When the GFX100s was announced, I thought it was the PERFECT camera for you! I'm really curious about that upcoming video on your thought process behind the decision!
Maybe it’s the additional £2,300 for a camera that is epitome of overkill.
@@johnsmith1474 he hardly used a camera a year ago when it hasn’t been released yet.
I think part of it may be (and it is for me anyway) not wanting to deal with 100 MP files. 50 MP is a sweet spot for me, but I totally understand it’s not an issue for many. Just my 2 cents.
No IBIS in the 50R. I still think the 100s would be the better choice. Too late now.
Totally agree
Congratulations on your new purchase! The quality of the images shot handheld in those appalling conditions speak for themselves. This is such a good video and the images are incredible. Thanks for this.
Congrats on the new toy! That's brilliant!
Classic Nordic weather blowing in. More the wind than anything. Always the wind.
The camera choice suits you. The Fuji MF are tempting. And what a way to break in the new camera. May it take many fine photos.
woww that weather was brutal, yes ouch! your hands in those wind chill temps! but what a wonderful thing to venture out in it even for a bit and - .gasp.. the images. superdupa, haunting, atmospheric, heavenly light, the snow storm, figure walking.. superb. right up my street in aesthetics. thank you for making what was in fact a very brilliant video. 🙏🏼💡
Congratulations on two fantastic pics loved the video always a pleasure to watch you work such an inspiration
Thought it would be an R5!
Never seen Cambois Beach like that. Love the second shot.
Wow GFX 50R! Didn’t see that coming! Can’t wait to see more!
The woman walking on the beach in the storm...awesome. Great capture of the moment. It wouldn't have happened had you not made the effort. Well done.
OMG you're so gonna love those files! Haha, welcome to the club! :)
I live in Canada it's snowing for alnost half of the year here. But I must admit that you have all my respect for shooting in those conditions!
Nice images. You are fond of a treat - Cambois beach in that weather.
I love it..... I hope you will love it. And the R is my absolute favourit. As an X-E3 owner, this is the big brother to look up to. Great video.
Good move Thomas - I bought a second hand 50S about a year ago and (despite the weight of the lenses!!) - definitely the best camera buy. Looking forward to how things develop for you.
Congratulations on the new camera. Ever since your good friend Brendan mentioned about your new camera I had been waiting for this video with pregnant expectations. Excellent video and presentation style as always. Now we are all looking forward to a "What's in my camera bag 2021" video 😂
loved the video and your perseverance to get out that warm and cozy van to shoot in a snowstorm! Looking forward to hearing more on why you want to replace your Canon 5d MkIV!
I got the 50s - love it for landscape photography!
Great video. Great shots. Keep up the awesome work. Hope the van build is going well.
Oh, now I am very excited to watch this video. So far I only read the description. :)
I just got myself a used GFX 50R last week. And I love it. So many details and dynamic range. I am stunned.
After watching your video now, it's great to see that you also are also impressed by the details and dynamic range.
Really excited to see what you will end up doing with the 50r!
I knew when you first got Fuji, that you would end up here, I just knew. I shot Nikon since I was 16 moved to Fuji 2 years ago and love it.. Thanks for sharing. Oh PS.... GOING TO BE -25 HERE TOMORROW WITH THE WINDCHILL ! YES -25 and I have the day off work sub zero video in the works!
You've made a great decision by investing in the GFX system! Great choice for you!
I sympathize, Tom. 15 F in Grand Haven last night with the wind off the lake. Beautiful, though.
Thanks a lot for the video and a great choice of a camera!
Good to see you out in the van and enjoying your new camera
Nice images! I hope the new gear works out well for you. Extreme weather can be challenging but I also enjoy trying to get into it when possible.
Good luck with the new tool. It's a beast for the dynamic range.
Congratulations on your new camera Thomas!
-11°C and very windy yesterday here in Sweden, I had very good clothing on my evening walk.
But I thought my eyeballs were about to freeze, the wind is really the worst.
Great first images Tom. Enjoy your new camera!
Congrats on the new gear, I'm guessing your friend Adam Gibbs (who I also follow),perhaps influenced the choice to go with Fuji. Enjoy, new stuff always gets me energized. We had something in common for 1 month, just purchased the 5D MK4 on Jan 12th to replace my 6D!!
Hope you get better weather soon - keen to see how you get on with the Fuji. I am without a GFX for the first time in nearly 5 years and I miss it already. Chopped it in for the 100s (the other 100 is just too large and heavy) but it could be a month yet until that arrives. Cannot fault the glass either, I have the 100-200 (with the 1.4x) , a 23mm and the 32-64 which about covers it all and they all perform well. Enjoy and keep on posting - always a joy
Another one like me! I have the great Canon 5D Mark III and since I have bought the Fuji xt30 I have not used my heavy Canon again. For me, the same quality (even comparing the professional Canon with the Fuji, an avanced amateur oriented) but less price and weith
I wish you lots of happy moments with your new 'mean machine', Thomas. I am imagining you, the GFX and Yosemite...
Take care !
I know the previous camper van looked lovely (modern, newish, loads of great stuff on the inside, etc) but the Mitsubishi looks so much rugged, and landscape photographer like
I see you've got some normal Scandinavian weather over there :-)
Thats normal Swedish Midsummer eve. Or Christmas. Usually the same weather on both dates.
I know how you felt being out there in that weather, we had the same weather Sunday and it was so cold.. But you got great images!!
New toys are fun! Lovely pictures Thomas 📷
Fantastic images and congratulations on your new camera. You are an inspiring photographer!
Fujifilm gfx 50r 👍🏼😍Very good decision, that's the only reason I became aware of your channel and now I don't want to be without it anymore. Cheers Rita
I would like to see a comparison image from your Canon. The size and cost of the Fugi are beyond my means, and I wonder if the difference in quality and dynamic range would be noticeable at the size I usually print at (16 x 20).
Actually loved this video, I surf at the east/north east coast and have missed it so much this winter during lockdown. Keep up the great work 😊
With the 45-100 having IBIS and an undisclosed new zoom, which folllows will be an xx-45mm I think landscape photogs will be covered for most needs. Awesome camera. Prints will be where it shines.
I understand getting out in not very friendly weather.
Good luck with the new equipment.
Hi Thomas, I recommend getting the teleconverter for the 100-200mm. It opened up more possibilities with my Gfx 50r. Have fun with the new camera.
It’s been a while since I last visited your channel. Loved what you did to the office. The chair, the practical, the contrast walls... Really elegant and pleasing setup for the videos. Only complaint is the reflections of the lights on the poster behind.
Well done my friend... You are my inspiration for many things.. Thank you for sharing
Great work on the Fuji! I stare at it with envy, but also know my own shooting doesn't justify the megapixel requirements like your own does. (I just went with a Fuji X-T4, upgrading from my beloved X-T2 and X100V) Enjoy!
Hey Thomas!!! Lovely weather. Greetings from sunny Florida :).
Great to see you out there again. Btw, so much for trying to lighten your kit, hehe. Honestly, all recent gear is just fantastic and produces great results with the right glass.
I am personally a Sony shooter but I think the Nikon Z7 II would be a great landscape camera, Nigel Danson certainly loves his. Cheers mate!
Congratulations on your new gear! It's been a long time coming 😅
Buying gear is more than just the image quality or the upgrade itself. It's also a source of inspiration that gets us out when we otherwise wouldn't have.
Seems like a very good decision for your "use case" - the added pixels will do those big prints some good (and allow for more cropping if needed). I have the smaller brother (or sister?) - the X-Pro3, and I love its design, the rangefinder style and the thoughtful button and menu layout. Had to read the manual multiple times, though, to internalize all the bells and whistles hidden under its clean body.
Congratulations on your new GFX 50R! Remember the Patagonia visit where it was completely calm? I can just dream about trying a medium format camera in such conditions. Imagine the reflections!
Congratulations, good luck with your new camera!
Congrats on the new camera and lens!!
Was watching with my kids and they chuckled at a "frigid" -9 or -10 Celsius. They've only experienced a Northwestern Ontario winter and we're in the middle of our cold snap. They couldn't start the busses yesterday for school. lol
looking forward future journey with the camera 🎉🎉🎉
Loved the video, really well done.
And now you own my 'dream - camera'... But the good thing is, that you will take better images with it than me... So, have fun with the 50R and take great images.
When you do a fuller review of the 50r, do tell us more about how you decide to customise the buttons and dials.
When I was out on my walk this evening, for the first time, I’ve enabled voice memo, so I can quickly attach notes to each shot - particularly useful when shooting with adapted lenses which don’t record EXIF data!
Congrats on your new purchase and kudos for having the cahones to step out and try a whole new camera system. We’ll look forward to hearing your comparisons as you get more time with it. I am long over due to upgrade my Canon 6D, and not terribly excited by r6 (lower res than i’d like to have to settle for) or r5 (pricey and am paying for lots of video functionality i have no interest in). Craig
Great video! Glad you like the GFX50R too. I just took mine out this morning to shoot my favorite tree in -9 degrees with ground fog and straight into the sun. Lenses didn't flare one bit. The quality of the Fuji GFX system makes me really happy, I have to say. I have a suggestion for handholding the 50R with the longer lenses: get the wooden grip by SmalRig. Now I'm off editing my images!
Uh oh, Thomas started using the camera I was always curious about but convinced myself I don't need...
People buy cameras, people buy lenses & I buy Pampers 😜😆
Looking forward to your best photos with it.
I buy pampers aswell.. tho i bought a Mamiya 645 last week 😎
Now is the perfect time to buy the 50r Thomas , fantastic detail and dynamic range , bargain . I cannot wait to see what you do with it .
@They Caged Non - Why would anyone buy one of these new when they are half price with a couple thousand shots on them?
@@johnsmith1474 You tell me where you can find a used GFX 50R with 2,000 shots for £1600 and I’ll raise you a pink unicorn.
Wow that's a beautiful photo. Awe inspiring
Oh my god I LOVE your new "Thomas Heaton" logo. It is superb. Really, really well done.
Those images were beautiful. I was watching it on my 4K working from home monitor and was blown away when you went into the full screen zoom pan. Cracking stuff! All in on Fuji now huh? Awesome!! :D
Welcome to the GFX club Tom, 2 great shots on your first outing.
Two throwaways.
I bought the 50r coming from the canon 6d a couple years ago. Best move I ever made. You won't be disappointed. The 100-200 is the worst performing lens, but it's still damn good. I just use the 45 and 110 at this point. Happy shooting.
Awesome mate you are on Fujifilm medium format! Cannot wait to see how it goes long term! Love your work! Nick
Congrats on the new Fuji! Especially like the second image.
Fuji GFX is good camera system for your tripod-based style. And you have the X line for when you need to go lighter weight.
