I remember that February day so well! As if it were only yesterday......I was with my friends at the local fleapit in Watford (UK). the seats were all pushed back so that us teenagers had room to dance.. The music was playing, we were all jiving to the music of the moment. Suddenly the door burst open and a guy ran down the aisle shouting "There's been a plane crash! Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. They're all dead!" The music stopped, we stopped dancing and stood still. You could have heard a pin drop. Who knew that a song about one the most tragic days in modern American music could be pushed to include so many metaphors about the era of rock in general. Big props to don McLean for pulling it off.
That was the whole point of the song. It's not just about the death of Buddy Holly et al., it's an ode to the entire era of rock and the loss of innocence as one grows into an adult.
@@alaeriia01 Yeah, I can see that. What I cannot see is how people forget that Buddy Holly wasn’t the only one lost that day. This Song Was wrote For Ritchie Valens Who was a Rock & Roll sensation of the 50's and died at 17,And became famous at 16...His plane went down in 59,and killed 3 of the band memebers...So Don wrote this song for him, He was Know as "THE MUSIC"
The timing and background music are a little off in certain parts. It's as if it were modernized a little bit and sped up, because when compared to the actual song, the lyrics don't match up in the timing.
Wow. You couldn't start with a much tougher song! I can't remember the first song I memorized. Whatever it was, I've forgotten it now. 😑 By the way, if you reply to me in another 9 years time, we will be having the slowest conversation in history.
lol it's always a starting point, your style will be different than pre-recorded versions, and that's a good thing, an artist needs to develope their own style, puts a spin on a work to further develop it.
Surely the lyrics are "Lenin read a book on Marx" rather than "Lennon read a book on Marx"? I mean John Lennon was definitely a leftie but the former makes infinitely more sense.
@@renejean2523 well I sing for a church on choir but I had to quit because of Covid but never mind that I had to sing for a party and everyone was invited so there were more people there than usual

Even the almost 9 min version. (Which they didn't play much on AM radio back then.) They always left out the Helter Skelter verse to shorten it for radio. Used to sing it all over the house everyday, whenever it came on the radio!!! This is truly a classic masterpiece!! :)
Again... you are (A classic masterpiece, that is). LOL. I'm right there with you, Kelly. I was 15 in 1971 and can recite the lyrics word for word. There have been lots of speculation about the true meanings of much of the song, I just like singing along to it. I like Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) even better.
I hate to be the one to throw a wrench into everyone's party, but the actual line is "...and them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey IN rye", not ..."whiskey AND rye". "Rye" is the name of a town near where Don McLean grew up. "The Levee" was the name of a bar. In the song, he goes to The Levee and it's closed, so he finds a bar in the neighboring town of RYE. The drink "rye" is already a whiskey - why would he sing about drinking whiskey and whiskey?
This is one of the most iconic songs ever written..It appeals mostly to the baby boomers and refllects what was happening at the time..I remember a kid in school in Liverpool telling me that Buddy Holly had been killed in an aeroplane crash. I couldn't believe it...I was given a copy of the record later on which I still have...It's a 45 rpm disc and you had to turn it over to get the second half of the song. Here was a young Texan who was a breath of fresh air and who belonged to us....he was ours and he kick started a hundred careers...we owe him a great debt. I saw the crickets later on and the audience sang every song right through as the crickets played along quietly and were effectively backing the audience who knew every single word...I'll never forget it...thank you Don Mclean for a song that will never die....Liverpool. England.
Because the back up vocals are being sung in a much higher key and they don't have the same tone as the lead vocals. If you were to sing this song exactly how Don McLean did, those backup vocals would make the whole thing sound horrible.

A long long time ago
in a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the Federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy...
Oh my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force they say
Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yeah, he's probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I know he built C-3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I know who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy
We started singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the Force?
They interviewed the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said, "Now listen here
Just stick it in your pointy ear
I still will teach this boy"
He was singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
We caught a ride back to Naboo
'Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gungans died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy
And I was singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
We were singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
