    About the sequence beginning at 4:47, it's kinda sad that so many youtubers feel the need to explain themselves (and in other cases self-censor) to appease the dullest, most timid, most neurotic, most perpetually offended viewers in the audience. Anything outside of the ordinary (in other words anything worth uploading/watching on YT) introduces some sort of added risk. There's literally no way to get away from that apart from simply staying home. Which, in the end, is really what those people want you to do, even if they don't consciously realize it. So don't dumb-down your content to appease them. They project their fears, their self-loathing and their nihilism onto others, that's how they cope with being them. Most of us would never think of judging you if something happened to your pet, instead we'd offer our moral support to try and help you through it. While we may not be as vocal or as strident as the sanctimonious ones, never forget we vastly outnumber them.

      @@robertrauter8459 love Ricky Gervais❤love that he recognizes the hypocrisy in Hollywood as well as in himself. He doesn’t let anyone off the hook for trying to be self righteous. We all make mistakes, we are all human, so unless we are talking about a murderer or rapist, etc, we need to understand that just because we might be in a higher tax bracket or on tv or in movies, that fact doesn’t make us better than others nor more intelligent. I’m so tired of “woke” people thinking they need to force other people to think and do as they do. We are (most of us) doing the best that we can and many are probably living more conscientiously than the woke loudmouths trying to make us better with their crazy notions.

      This is so eloquently written! We really, really appreciate this. Somehow you’ve managed to capture one of the biggest issues at the heart of anyone’s RUclips channel. It’s a sad reality that the idiots are always a loud minority, but they aren’t who we’re making these videos for. We’re making them for people like you who get what we do, people who don’t want us to apologise and who don’t need to have life spoon-fed to them to understand the subtle nuances and messy areas of it all. Love and appreciate you and this comment. Thank you 🙏

    That’s exactly what coyotes do. They lure their prey away into traps. Once he was tired they would have turned on him and made the kill easier. They are extremely intelligent and adaptive. I am so glad he finally responded to you. Further south you will have more coyotes, jaguars and other predators. I never in a million years would have thought you were careless. I have seen your love for your pups. Be safe, walk in peace and keep your wonderful videos coming!!!

      Definitely not a myth. They are super intelligent. On the farm one would hobble along the fence line and our 2 dogs would chase after them. The other coyotes would hide and then come in behind the dogs. We lost one in a flash before we could run out of the house.

    What a beautiful place to camp. As for the coyotes, they weren't running from Scout, they were luring him into a more vulnerable position, away from you, the van, etc. There definitely could've been more coyotes waiting farther back. It's funny and sweet how Scout just sat down when he finally registered your panicked voice. He's adorable and you did nothing wrong. Things happen - even to people like you two who take an immeasurable amount of time, patience, love and care with your dogs. Rest easy and happy trails.

    Delay your trip north. Winter is a month behind, and you're likely to encounter minus 30 in March and cold wet weather and late snow in April and May in Canada. Need to consider ice/ferry crossings, if any, along your route. Move your northbound route east through Alberta, take highways 93 and 40 to Dawson Creek to start mile zero of the Alaska Highway. The actual Pan American Highway is inland through New Mexico, Utah, Alberta etc. meant to be a trucking corridor and although interesting, you might like other routes better. PCH on the trip back down a must. Safe travels!

    • @OverlandingSophia
      @OverlandingSophia  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the heads up! The red line is just a rough indicator of our direction of travel, anything more specific will be decided nearer the time. We won’t be in Canada in March, in fact we won’t even be leaving Mexico until then. But we are aware that the Dalton Highway isn’t always passable for non-winterised vehicles like ours even in May, so we’re keeping our options open. We can’t delay by too long because of the visa situation for the US so we have to make do with what we’ve got and adjust, plan and prepare accordingly. If plans need to change they will. And yes, can’t wait for the PCH 🌞🫶

    Omg, I can't imagine how scared you must have been. I'm so sorry you had to go through that, but happy everything turned out ok. What a horrible tragedy that would have been. Accidents happen in a split second, although no fault of our own and we blame ourselves with all the woulda/coulda/shouldas.
    I accidentally lost my beloved parrot on January 16 and I'm sick and heartbroken. I'm a senior who lives alone, unable to work due to health, and will never be able to afford another one, not that he could be replaced. He was my boy, we were joined at the hip and he went every place I did. I sold all of my gold jewelry to get him in the first place. My heart actually hurts as he's all I had to keep me company.
    We never get over losing our pets. So glad this had a happy ending. Hugs 💕

    OMG, this video raised my blood pressure. I’m glad everyone was okay.
    Reminds of the time in college when my roommate and friends went to Yosemite. We were in path area walking and there were other tourists around… and my roomie was walking her dog on a leash (full grown boarder collie about 40 lbs). She was on one of those retractable leashes and the leash wasn’t fully extended as there’s to many people around she would try to say hi to. In one split second a mountain Lion cut through the path and grabbed her dog so hard and fast that the leash was yanked out of her hand. She started screaming and running after her dog. I was in shock, other tourist ran after her right away. Then I started running but I’m not in good shape. The mountain Lion dropped her dog and ran off. Her dogs name is Mindy and she didn’t make it. When Mindy was snatched we didn’t hear her yelp or bark. The cat grabbed her by the neck and ran. The vet said her neck was broken. She wouldn’t have survived even if any of us got to her sooner.
    Even with precautions, you still have to be cautious. At no time did we ever think a mountain Lion would be near so many people, they’re usually further out. Nor did we expect to see one come out of nowhere and cross our path. One bite in the wrong place was all it took. Please continue to be safe and cautious. 😘🐶

    • @OverlandingSophia
      @OverlandingSophia  Год назад

      That’s absolutely awful 😢 I’m so sorry to hear Mindy didn’t make it. That’s the problem with wild animals like this - they aren’t like stray dogs. They know how to kill and how to kill quickly. That must have been heartbreaking for your friend 💔

      A polar vortex cold snap here with temps well below freezing! Who cares about coyotes, I care about warmth!
      And in Atlantic Canada, the native species of predator and prey would be wolves and caribou.
      Deer are an introduced species and coyotes are not native to this part of the world. They just sort of moved in.

    OK, so 'knowing you two' even a teeny bit, watching your coyote sequence made me so scared for your pups and you. I know what it feels like when your dog runs off in their vicinity ... YIKES. I am so relieved for you and so thankful. OMG. You deserved a gorgeous beach to end up on. It would take me days to get over that! And I must admit I was salivating over the fish and the carrot/banana bread. Thinking I could easily polish that off in a day. I had no idea that there were so many little beaches to enjoy the same exquisite views and lovely water. Eagerly looking forward to next week's video. It get's warm once you cross the Tropic of Cancer. The sea too! It's a bit crazy on the southern coast but if you go up on the West Coast to Todos Santos it's quieter and there's an artist colony there. Also check out Santa Rosalia, there's a church they're meant to have been designed by the man who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. If you ever get back to Mulege, drive down on the north side of the river and there's a beach Taverna that used to serve the most amazing garlic soup - not sure if it still does but if it does it's well worth it. I reckon you should have a Van Life International Summit Meeting.
    Instead of travelling on the road to Prudhoe Bay and wrecking the van and they have huge mosquitoes. Have you thought of taking the Canadian side on the Dempster Highway from Dawson City to Invuk a route Itchy Boots chose as a safer option?. You still travel through Alaska before crossing back into Canada.

There are refueling stops every 200 miles, often with a helicopter pad and usually a small store, sometimes camping. (At least, that's what it was 20 years ago.) If you see signs for "the best cinnamon buns in the universe", that's the location of my scariest encounter of that trip (the stuff of horror movies, for real.)

    One of first things I taught my lab was to come when his called , he and I spend a lot of time in the Australian bush where there are a number of nasty animals that will kill him .
    It’s not to late to teach your dogs to stay when commanded , especially since you are travelling it’s essential.

    • @OverlandingSophia
      @OverlandingSophia  Год назад

      Thanks Luke. We do train the dogs to return on command, stay, wait, lie down etc and they are both trained regularly. You might not know but Scout is a rescue from Turkey. He is part Akbash which is a LGD, and once he is in the “zone” with a perceived threat - breaking that focus with recall has been extremely difficult and is something we work on constantly with him. But Akbash don’t rely on human commands to work like labs or our other border collie, and so he has a very strong independent streak. It’s why he’s on leash all the time we’re out if there’s wild animals about etc, but these coyotes caught us off guard because they approached the van in broad daylight. He’s still a pup though and he’s getting better and better all the time. This was just an example of instincts going above and beyond anything else 🐾

    I think this Scout dog is a turkish akbash. Known for suspicious, protective instincts, the Akbash dog is fiercely independent and can be a challenge to train into an acceptable family pet. But they never leave you and guard you even they know they could be killed by coyotes. The Akbash dog's guarding tendencies can make these dogs prone to “alarm barking,” sometimes to excess.

      You're absolutely correct! He is part Akbash for sure and he has strong genes. He is very aware of our surroundings whenever we'er on walks etc and everything you say above is true. Although he is very much a loving pet and is a lovable lump most of the time! We've managed to calm his alarm barking but when he sensed the coyotes, his instincts 100% took over. Sending all our love to you in Türkiye, praying your family and friends are safe ❤️
