  • Ever since we left Utah in March to drive our van to the far north of Alaska, we've been chasing the winter. While everyone back home was posting pictures of daffodils and blue skies, we were driving through mini blizzards and parking in the only rest areas that had been ploughed during the winter. In Prudhoe Bay, we were greeted with -15 temperatures and freezing fog. We have been desperate for warm sunshine on our skin, to see wildflowers and green trees. Well, this week we officially turned south! And boy, we were not prepared for the sights that were about to greet us!

    ↠ A BIT ABOUT US
We're Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we're feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we'll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Argentina! 🇦🇷

The landscape is stunning. Smart dogs with the bear encounter,River being off lead and obeying your command ❤. Damn that lake was blue, but omg so cold. We had some rain here in NS, so very sad for all affected. Read about the lady who ran through the woods to rescue 18 dogs from a doggy daycare ❤. The bears are nice, from a distance 😮. Stay safe

It's typical isn't it! We go hiking through the forests with bear spray and the dogs on lead, and see nothing. Take them out for a quick wee in the morning and come face to face with one! Omg that woman sounds like my hero!!! Need to find out who she is 🥹 💕

I never heard that story in the news here. She was brave in light of the speed of spread of these fires in the wind gusts. But there are lots of stories of heroes and of kindness in this terribly horrific situation. People are generously steppibg up and helping others. Makes a person proud to be a Maritimer, actually. Thank the heavens for the rainy weather we are finally having. Hoping it lasts all week to help with the most intense Shelburne county fire that apparently is still burning underground, it is so intense...The largest fire in the province's history and most destructive of our beautiful natural environmeny by far.

@@OverlandingSophia oh yes another absolutely world-class episode!! You guys have such great Good Fortune when you do things in North America. No previous Vanlifers have been able to capture what U2 have. By the way my lady and I lived up in Mammoth for a few years and one evening I went out to look at the stars at midnight .. and on a deck right next to me was literally a 9-foot black bear. He was 3 ft away yet I was taller because I was on this five foot deck. He got startled and so did I. Well instantly I said to myself... DO SOMETHING THAT'S COMPLETELY NON-THREATENING. Well I immediately thought of Joey from Friends. And I turned to him with a head nod up... and said in Joey's new jersey boys accent ..
      Hey.. how u doin?
And no BS.. the big black bear lifted his head up just like I did. And immediately concluded I wasn't a threat.
So I carefully backed away and so did he!! Victory
Now if it was a grizzly I would have made a beeline to the front door of my house. Btw both the Rottweiler and pug were riveted on me with their eyes wide opened pressed against the front window !! 😁

As of right now the fire in the more populated area has been contained but the larger one further south of the Province of Nova Scotia is still un-contained and last I heard had spread around 25,000 hectares (249.8 square miles) making it the largest wildfire in NS history. Fortunately we’ve never had any wildfire of this magnitude, unfortunately because of this our resources are stretched thin. It’s been a crazy week to say the least!!

Thanks Steve, we could also linger here for weeks! Feels so quiet too compared to the Alaska Highway and near Whitehorse. Love rec sites! Canada does them so well too. There is a picnic table at tourist tour site #13. You can definitely see the toe of the glacier up the valley. The view is not nearly as spectacular as from the main viewing site, but the mountain valley views are lovely. We were there on June 20, 2018 and there was no sign of snow near the road. Good luck. Check at the visitor center in Stewart to see if the conditions change. The rec sites were mostly empty on 37 when we were there. 😊

We stayed at the campground, walked along the river and explored the historic old town. The highlight was the KSAN historical village and museum. We also explored Kispiox. This area is rich in first-nation culture.
In contrast is Smithers, BC. We stayed overnight at the Twin Falls Rec Site and walked up the trail to the last remnants of snow. The downtown has lots of shops for tourists - restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, etc.. A great refueling stop. Good luck.
