We're Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we're feeling like a new challenge. Happy Birthday, Ben. I am 53 and my other half is almost 55. Stay curious, stay excited, stay passionate is my advice. When I was 34 I was diagnosed with cancer so when I turned 40 I had just received the all clear. The next decade was the best decade of my life. Life is always a wonderful adventure and it doesn’t stop unless you do. Keep loving life. All the best to you for the next 40 years. May they be truly epic. 😎🤘
I am 53 and the BEST thing about getting older is that you get more at ease almost by the minute. Whatever will be will be kind of thing. The biggest regret is not taking enough care of my body, health wise and exercise wise. At 40 I could have still reversed, but I could not be arsed at that time haha! But seriously, embrace your age and live the moments. You have so much time ahead of you still Ben! 😊

I'm over 60 and the best years in my life were in my 40s. Compared to my 20s and 30s, at 40 we are wiser, our finances are probably better and being that we know better we no longer fall victim to peer pressure, so we're more free to do what we want. Right? It's nothing but a number, just make it count by doing what you want to do, just like you are. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday again Ben. I am 48 and my forties have been the best time of my life. You are comfortable in who you are, appreciate the people around you as much as they deserve and realize how special everyday big and little moments can be. I loved being in my 20s, thought I knew everything in my 30s but it wasn’t until my 40s that I appreciate life.

My Australian Shepherd is just as noisy in the morning. Happy Birthday, Ben! What a wonderful party full of love and laughter! You can’t ask for more!! I love your relationship, full of love, respect and kindness. You two obviously not only love each other but genuinely like each other, even living in such close quarters!! It’s so refreshing and wonderful. I will be turning 60 in January and have decided I will no longer wait to live the life I want.
I am currently having a Mercedes 170 cargo van built out with plans to drive to Alaska next August. I will be doing the Dempster Highway first then the Dalton. You guys gave me so many ideas as well. You and several other You Tubers have inspired me and I thank you for that.
My hardest age was 25. I had all these ideas where I should have been at 25 and was nowhere near any of them. After that, my age was never an issue. Your health, your loved ones, your experiences are all that matter and you, Ben, are living your best life. It’s just a number, don’t worry about it!!

Life is just starting at 40 after a warm up, I am 62 and travelling the world, still enjoying drinking tequila, and looking forward to doing this for the next 20 years. You will find out that you are still the same person in your head even if your body looks a bit older. Just stay young at heart and you will have a blast and pack in as much as you can into life, never putting stuff off until tomorrow!

To be honest my dad is in his mid-sixties now and living his best life. Don't know what I was worried about, maybe it was just the shock of it 😆
When I was in my very early twenties, I drove from Bellingham WA to Baja California and spent four weeks fishing and enjoying life. This series has been totally enjoyable to watch. I look forward to Sunday morning to check if the latest video has landed. And Ben, happy birthday buddy. I passed forty quite some time ago. When I heard life begins at forty I thought, yeah right. But yeah right. It proved itself completely true. I'd bet you'll find the same. Young enough to physically do whatever you want and old enough not to do anything too stupid. Enjoy pal.

I remember turning forty and hating it, but wish I was turning it now. It won’t be long before you realize how young forty really is. The next couple of decades will fly by in a blink of an eye and before you know it you’ll be 60. Enjoy every minute because you never know how quickly life can and will change. As long as you have your health, you have everything.

Ben, I’m 63 3/4 yo. I’ll give you my piece of learning. At some point in your early 40’s, you’ll feel a change, not physical (It’s hard to prevent body sagging lol) it will be a mental/soul change, an AHA! Moment. Only you will understand. Everything will be clearer, you’ll know when it happens.
Life truly starts at 40.
Enjoy, keep learning about places, people and yourself. I don’t know you ( except for YT) but you are a cool dude, a beautiful man.

Happy belated birthday Ben... we are catching up after our own road trip around Italy! Your birthday sounds similar to my 60th that I had in Oct this year. We planned to be in Florence, then Venice, then Sorrento. We ended up on a lovely campsite next the beach in Cefalu Sicily and had a chilled low key affair - perfect! When I turned 40 I was like you and felt a bit down. I never felt like that again, even on my 60th! Life tips - you don't need any... you seem to be doing it right! Really enjoying the vids and gathering ideas for a possible future trip. I love the felt pen and map recap part btw - great bit of old school!
btw, at about 65 we drove the Baja in a 40 ft diesel pusher.... sold it this past August with 142,000 miles on it... go for it

I'm 49, (wow still can't believe it 😲 😭), unfortunately I don't have any life advice cos I'm still figuring it out and that's ok. Just live in the moment and appreciate the little things. After a long day at work I came in cracked open my fav beer and cooked some delicious food, whilst doing this I had my headphones on blasting some awesome tunes and I was dancing round in the kitchen without a care in the world 😁 Then I sat down and watched this video whilst munching my dinner 😋👍 Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it - John Lennon

The tides in Baja on the side that you're on... the Sea of Cortez... can be huge. It all depends on the moon. Full moon and new moon the tides are big... Full moon are the highest of the 2. So all the mangroves get a good drink twice a month and so does that short "grass/ shrub" stuff. Come the full moon they will all be under water. And then it might be tricky to get back from the sandbank you're on. If the mud gets cloggy you might have to stay there till it dries out. Further up north towards San Felipe the tides come in fast especially round the sandbanks like the one you're on, covering the vegetation at the back. Looks like you'll be ok getting out. You've missed the high tide....
Yes! So after we filmed this the tides got bigger and blocked the way in and out of the beach for the whole morning. It had just been a full moon so guessing that was something to do with it!
Exactly. Just don't get stuck in the mud and watch a really big tide come in. Immediately get someone with a 4 wheel drive truck and a tow rope. @@OverlandingSophia

Happy Birthday! 40 is just a number for sure , but I get the struggle when turning a certain age if you have not accomplished or experienced certain milestones in life. For me turning 40 and not experiencing being a mom was very upsetting to me. I felt like I missed a milestone. I moved on but it was hard and in the end all was as it should. I became a mother at age 45! Try to relax as there is nothing you can change that has already happened. Life is in charge and you will have so many seasons of self acceptance and unforseen change.
So glad to hear things worked out for you, even if a few years later than planned. Life is what happens when you’re busy making plans!

My fellow moth phobic human:) Also I heard coconut oil helps with "no see umms", sandflies.I got married in Grand Cayman years ago and danced in the sand for hours with my wedding dress on. Needless to say the rest of my "weddingmoon", my legs were covered in no see umm bites, the buggers. I feel your pain Jess.

Living on a boat I am often under threat by the squadron of flies that find all the ways to sneak into the boat. Add to that the flies' amazing number of eyes, they present a very evasive target. But.... I found a very effective way to do them in. Being on a boat I use a lot of "Simple Green" as it is totally nontoxic. I sneak up on them and when close enough I mist them with the diluted cleaning solution. It instantly soaks into their wings and they crash to the floor or wherever. Then, it's the fly swatter for the finish. I guess they can't see the liquid coming and the deed is done before they can dry and fly. Try it! It has the Vin Vitae (the name of the boat) seal of approval.

Ben, if you follow my example, you have a lot of years left in you. 40 is way young so don't sweat it! Just think and act like you are in your 20s until you hit 60. Chesca, try to find Avon's Skin So Soft bath oil. That is the very best sand flea/no-see-um repellent ever.

I have noticed that the body is showing a few signs of my younger days adventure activities, especially in the joints so if I had one piece of advice it would be to keep active but it seems like you guys have that one sorted ! All the best for the travels further south ! We've made it down to Texas now so enjoying the warmer weather !

On your way back around, try to visit Puerto Peñasco at the top of the gulf. There are dunes there that people camp at and ride quads in the dunes. Amazing sunsets over the mountains.

I'm 41 so a year ahead of you. No life advice really, just enjoy life mate and keep doing what you do. A number doesn't change who you are. I love watching your videos because you show parts of the world some of us will never see. That's a pretty major life achievement.

In the 70's...my husband and I did a trip down the Baja for almost 2 months. When we were in La Paz we were camping on a beach. One day we went into town (it was much smaller then) to buy water and groceries. On the way back we passed a house being built. There were workers on the ground and workers on the second floor roof, building with cement blocks. An argument broke out amongst them and one threw a cement block at the fellow on the ground. It struck him on the head and he went down hard. The workers looked at us...we looked at each other and took off. We were not sticking around as witnesses..no way, no how. We hopped a bus north that very day. I've often wondered what happened in the aftermath but we'll never know other than that it could not have been good. Other than that we thoroughly enjoyed Baja :) Following your trip has brought back so many memories for me. We followed a lot of the same routes, going down from British Columbia.

My 40th.. was a super-bummer because I thought I was turning 41 "and 40 had come & gone SO fast!". Life was RUSHING by!?! My wife & daughters had a terrible time convincing me I had calculated wrong, but they stuck to their guns and finally got my head straight. With a few days still to go - I realized I was only 39, and wow! Happy, happy, happy! Turning 40 was the best birthday EVER! A complete 'do-over'!!!!!! 40!!! Easy! I mean........ been there. Done that! 8-)

I know it sounds cheesy, but the best age is the one you are right now... you've got all the wisdom you've accumulated up til this point ...and as you get older you start to realise how precious time is so you begin to appreciate everything just that little bit more. Have you read the other two C. Mitchell books, also with Sarah Noble; The Night Whispers and The Bone House? Worth a read if you enjoyed the Midnight Man so much. I'm surprised you cart so many books around with you..., living in a van, they take up so much space and add so much more weight (fuelconsumption) to your van. Nowadays, one reads his Books on a Kindle (other brands are available)! Join the club Ben, I don't like metal mugs either not even a beer out a can, especially if it touches my teeth.

It's strange isn't it! I think everyone has an age that they struggle with. I hated turning 25 as it meant I'd be in the over-25 category on X Factor which seemed SO old 😂

Ben. I'm now 45, but I remember looking forward to turning 40. My parents always said that things got better with age. The bills are paid down, the kids are more self sufficient, you're more confident with yourself and you end up enjoying life a little more. So far, I find this all true. So embrace your 40's and enjoy! Happy belated birthday!

Not in the 40 Club, but I would say that time is pretty arbitrary anyway. If you measured it in days it's 14,610 - not exactly a number worth celebrating. You can't do much more than live the life you've always dreamed of which you guys are. I'm sure you'll still be finding new little pockets of paradise and be off on new adventures for years to come. Hope you had an amazing day, can't wait to see what your 15,000s have in store (still a bit to go before then though)!
