Van Life in the YUKON Isn't Easy (Road Trip to Alaska)

  • After reaching Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway last week, we are officially on one of the greatest roads in the world. But we guess that beauty doesn't come without a cost. The road leads us past towering mountains, hot springs, herds of bison and our first bear! But the Spring snowmelt and gravel roads spell disaster again for our windscreen. But this time, it's not the answer we wanted.

We're Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we're feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we'll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Argentina!

I live just outside of Dawson City, and you can see why I do - the wilderness, and the scenery. We treat distances differently up here though. When I last drove south on holiday, I went from Whitehorse, to Toad River in a single day, and then Chetwynd the next day. I have gone Dawson-Whitehorse, and back in a single day, and lots of people up here do that. I HIGHLY recommend a trip up the Dempster. It is one of the great drives of the world. And, it is all gravel, so your window WILL get chipped! That is a normal thing up here. :)

Hey you 4 ! Fantastic video. No words to describe the vastness and the beauty of the landscape as you drive along.
Even on a small screen. The hot springs looked so inviting and in all of that muted color to see the blue warm water was perfect. I loved seeing the rather ratty looking coats on the bison and their long loping strides seeming to know that they need not hurry for anyone. What relatively small feet , one might think that they'd topple over considering the length between footsteps. And to see the bear's beautiful coat after hibernation, almost silky.
Hard to grasp the size of the signpost forest ! Loved it !
Ben and Chesca , you two are adorable and fun and I'm so glad you are continuing your grand adventures and generously sharing so much of yourselves with us.

I said to Ben they look like they skipped leg day at the gym. Hope all is good with you and you're fully enjoying the warmth and colour of Spring over on the east coast. Seriously don't worry about the windscreen ("windshield" in Canada), this is really just a typical Canadian experience. The stone chips can be repaired for $30-50 or you can get a DIY kit for much less. The thing to know is that the cold will cause the chip to turn into one or more cracks with the temperature change. Rural people will get some chips all summer and then repair them before the temperature drops in the fall. Unless you have a lot of spiderweb cracks all through it, you've no real worry. Start noticing local people's windscreens and you'll see it's not uncommon to leave it a while.

Really appreciate this Brent, you and other Canadians in the comments have really put our minds at ease. Baby bison, baby foxes....too cute! I think River would have liked some of that Poutine, she was giving it the eye. Was that your "mini pub crawl"? A RUclips that recently started by new van dweller, James, in the UK, is By The Curb, you'd enjoy it. James and his girlfriend Helen do pub crawls as well as hiking and other things and they are so funny. I hope your windshield hangs on for a bit longer. @@OverlandingSophia You will have to stretch over to the passenger side of the windscreen where the windscreen is most likely to be hit. Good luck not careening off the highway while you are doing that, ha, ha! It's pea gravel season on the Alaska Highway. All the pea gravel laid down on the ice in the winter is awaiting vanlifers windshields to molest. There is no way to stop it. Nobody in Yukon or Alaska replaces their windscreen at this time of the year. The cracks and chips will add character to your windscreen. Unless a huge rock goes right through your windscreen so the rain can get in there's nothing to worry about.

The main hazard is your glass in your eyes- good idea to wear safety glasses or shades when running up North. The worst time of year is now because the all gravel from winter hasn’t been cleaned up /blown off the road yet.

Right when you think the scenery can't get any better it does. It's really hard for us in this country to imagine how much uninhabited land there is. I'm so pleased you saw the Bison and the bear, how cool was that. I love them just walking casually along the road, like the sheep do here, just a bit bigger 😂 Really looking forward to Alaska, watch out for Bigfoot 😊. Stay safe love Sue and Bryn xx

On 5e Dempster I appreciated the warnings posted about bears around campgrounds but I became convinced that the landscape was actually more dangerous than the wildlife. I knew that if I wandered from the road even a little bit in any direction I’d be a goner……I imagine that’s how Tombstone got it’s name….the beaten path was where we stayed!!
