  • I get a little heated in this one, but I stand by everything I'm saying; the good, the bad and the ugly. Has Chanel had excellent quality in the past? Yes! Even in recent years, are these beautifully made luxury goods? Absolutely. Is there something WRONG with the picture when it comes to the Chanel 22 bag? Without question.

People need to face the fact that the Wertheimer Family has been laughing all the way to The Bank, they never respected Chanel’s vision after Karl and are just throwing her name at us because they know that people will buy anything that has those CC’s on it. I feel like the last batch of leather from 2021 are the best we’re going to get out of quality.

I definitely agree with you since I have a whole series of Chanel seasons to compare with. Recent launches especially 22 A onwards, the leather quality has seemed to have gone completely southwards , talking about my 22 A Chanel 19, 22B Trendy CC and 22B classic flap grey. My 22B Classic grey, the leather seems to be thinner and the base of the bag not as sturdy as my vintage classic black (2012!) , overall the bag is so much lighter! 22A Chanel 19 caramel is also wrinkly and leather thinner as well...I am so done with Chanel!

I think everyone needs to hop onto the YSL train. I'm a big Louis Vuitton fan because I love the history of it but I've been buying more and more Saint Laurent and I absolutely love them. I currently own the Toy Lou Lou, the medium Lou camera bag, 2 card holders and the large zip wallet and have not experienced one quality issue with any of the items. Sadly even with the new Louis Vuitton items they've been putting out, you're almost guaranteed to have quality issues with each purchase. Quality with that luxury brand started dropping after 2010.

I purchased the black quilted leather Tammie crossbody clutch 2 weeks ago and that bag is amazing, it feels like butter. It seems to me that Chanel is struggling with managing their supply chain and manufacturing infrastructure. It’s clear they are struggling to meet demand so it would be a very logical and effective decision for them to begin using cheaper/faster methods to manufacture their products. Thank you for this much needed video. Chanel has been receiving extreme backlash about not only the price increases but also the poor quality of their bags. This makes me wonder, with the new stores they are opening for "VIP" customers, will they receive the higher quality bags and other consumers who don't purchase as often receive the lower quality bags? It's definitely something to think about.

I got my new trendy cc small black and seriously the leather of 22B vs my other 16K beige trendy is sooooo completely different. 16K is so buttery and smooth lambskin but the 22B is horribly, fresh out of boutique but the bag is already so wrinkly especially at the back and when the flap opens up it mae the bag even worse. Had to reject the bag.

I've seen a rep reissue up close and, frankly, the leather on your pink reissue looks very similar to what I recall the rep looking like. The rep I saw included a little piece of matching leather that was being used as a protector for the zipper tab (to prevent those marks the zippers always leave). That piece was clearly the same stuff they were using for the bag. It was a paper-thin layer of leather glued to foam (which would then provide the padding inside the quilts). The bag looked, felt and smelled like leather, but there clearly wasn't very much actual leather being used. If, to save money or material, Chanel is stealing techniques from the rep bag makers, we're all in trouble.

The alleged lies about if a bag is in stock. The stitching issues which precede this new issue by a while (see Sophie Shohet.) I feel like they are laughing at us!! I have still had GREAT quality from Loewe, Chloe, and other brands and smaller brands such as Demellier and Strathberry. All Strathberry bags are hand made in Spain. They are truly gorgeous. There are so many smaller brands deserving of our money more than big corporate brands who it seems to me don't care about customers except perhaps those spending tens of thousands on courture!

I love all this stuff. All the high end bags, shoes, clothes, etc. High-end pieces truly are made better, last longer, look better. But in the end...it's all just "stuff." As a lifelong dedicated follower of fashion, I'm now at the age where I know I can look good for much MUCH less. My money is precious. Things are tight. Health is not what it once was (you know..."invincible" in my youth). When I see people arguing over the differences (however miniscule) of a REAL designer bag vs a dupe, I always wonder: Would 99.9% of anyone know the difference? Or even care? Worse yet, when I watch some of these channels and see HOW MUCH MONEY is being spent on these bags--even "recycled" bags--it about gives me a heart attack. Thousands and _thousands_ of dollars, even from "reduced" sites like Real Real, with many YT channelers have many multiple pieces! I know "it's their money, they can do what they want with it," but seriously ladies, is there not a better way to spend one's hard earned money, especially in this day and age? (especially when spending all that hard-earned money on things like a Chanel bag that peels away after 1 day). Very soon, having a fancy bag won't matter--AFFORDING FOOD will be all that matters. I'm not joking. The world is going to (literal) hell in a handbasket....and from what I've seen around RUclips...it's a _designer_ handbasket, at that. Just my 2 cents.

I am sitting here nodding along in agreement with what you are saying in relation to hides and dyeing processes. It has always been my understanding that the best hides are reserved for luxury manufacturers, be that bags/furniture/cars. Other Companies aren’t able buy them even if they could afford to. The European Union have, over the years, made many demands to how businesses can operate and Tanneries won’t have escaped this, having to make changes to their ways of dyeing materials and the chemicals involved, many sadly going out of business altogether because these newer methods of tanning no longer produced a great quality product. Most people who buy modern day Chanel buy for the name and care little about how it was made and modern day Chanel are greedy feckers with complete disregard for the quality and construction of their products, so it’s win-win. The few of us who do care are growing more disappointed by the day. EDIT: Maybe if we were happy to own just a couple of bags instead of the plethora some people have, the quality would be better. Is it partly our fault for wanting more?

    • @classicswithaquirk
      @classicswithaquirk  2 года назад +1

I think that in general, demand is going to just be a part of the growth of a company. Even if everyone who’s ever wanted a Chanel only gets one or two, there will continually be more people who will want their one or two. Whatever choices Chanel (or any other company) has made in terms of quality, I think that it’s really the transparency that I personally would like. Chanel -even Hermes- have made PVC bags and people were happy to buy them! But in those cases, the brands told us it was pvc! And as I stated, I don’t know for SURE any of this of course. It’s just… looking a little harder at what I can.

I have a 224 reissue from 2007, medium beige Clair from 2014 and a jumbo caviar from 2022 all purchased from the boutique so all wear and tear is mine. Honestly quality wise my 2007 and 2014 are almost perfect! They’ve lasted, don’t have much wear/tear despite lots of use and I wasn’t even that careful. Current jumbo 2022 has 2 slightly loose stitches on the flap, leather feels stickier than my caviar medium from 2014 (I don’t know why. I live in California), hardware scratches way easier, etc. Still love the bag but when I came home and compared my medium flap the leathers just felt so different. I know leathers are different but just felt odd. @classicswithaquirk hello I came across your video and I'm absolutely drawn in by the way you speak about leathers. My cousin recently acquired a chanel bag from the thrift store she works at. This bag was in such horrible condition it was hard to tell if it was authentic or not. After reading in a few forums and watching your video I will say it's definitely authentic. The "leather" around the top of the bag was peeling and almost crumbling into little pieces. I've never seen anything like it. Not even in Brahmin Coach or Dooney &Bourke. I'd be embarrassed to carry it. There shouldn't be any type of storage issues, wear and tear or lack of moisture that should cause a bag to look and feel like this bag. It was hard and very very stiff. I don't believe there's anything she can do to restore this bag. In my opinion, if she starts carrying it, it will start to chip and look like a dog who has fleas eating its hair out in spots.

The bag I'm referring to is a tote bag with chains around the straps. I'm not sure what the original owner done to this bag or if Chanel really dropped the ball with their quality when the bag was made. Whoever caused this bag to look this way should honestly be ashamed of themselves. The bag doesn't seem to be 15 years old. I believe it's a newer bag than that. I've had $300 bags longer and looks better..actually several. The other person mentioned you purchasing a bag and trying to expose them. I agree with you not purchasing a bag with your own money just to destroy it, but I believe there might be enough people willing to pitch in and help you purchase the bag for this reason. It wouldn't hurt to mention it on a live and everyone can brainstorm about how to actually come up with the money pot. I'd love to know what's going on with these bags because something definitely isn't right about these bags.

Very nice video! Also, have you considered that the three bags from Chanel that you say are in good quality are all black bags and the one that's current season is a light colored one? I was thinking about it bc I also am a leather enthusiast and read that the color black takes well to materials, I think that's in general too black is just like a strong color. Maybe they put more effort to making their black bags than their light colored ones? Idk that's just something I noticed. Either way Chanel needs to get it together. Here's my conspiracy, Chanel thrives with consumers who only buy them for their name and don't care about quality. As long as there's people out there who just buy bc it says Chanel, Chanel will continue to make cheap quality stuff bc they know they can still sell it no matter what.
Side note: forgot to add that's why I do appreciate brands like Chloe on their website they actually tell you upfront if they use aniline or semi aniline dyed leathers and etc.

If Chanel only did costume jewellery they would have gone out of business years ago. It is absolute junk. They think that by putting a name cartouche on them that that is enough. They’re on par with Claire’s Accessories if you ask me. Even before all these leather and manufacturing problems came up, for the life of me, I could never understand how a company could make fabulous bags and such terrible costume jewellery

Wow. It looks coated to me. I think (but I could be wrong) that the UK, at least, has some guidelines about how thick a coating can be on leather and still be called full-grain. I was surprised when I got an Aspinal bag, clearly advertised as full grain, but there were no pores to be seen. It seems to me (not saying this is definitely true; just my opinion) that my bag is coated. I wonder if Chanel is also using coated full grain leather.

I think part of the problem with the 22 is the design. A draw string bag will have stress and weight put on the casing where the draw strings are threaded through the casing. With the 22 the metal and leather straps would put stress on the casing and then add in the weight of items in the bag and then the casing is going to have damage. And if the casing is some kind of leather,

This is a phenomenal video, thank you for making it. I'm not a Chanel fan, but love bags in general and knowing about leathers is important. The first word that entered my mind when you inserted the side by side Reissue pictures was that the black one looked "plump". The hide looked like it was thick, hydrated, and sturdy, while the pink looked thin and fragile.
I saw Dacob's video and was so sad for him. What a disappointing experience. In his video I commented on an article I saw last month out of Vogue HK by Ingrid Chua. In it she breaks down the types of leathers produced by most tanneries used by luxury houses, and from those descriptions, I had thought that maybe Dacob's 22 was made from Split leather. What is your take on this? Basically, it's the lowest grade of leather you can get. It can "split" and show the white bottom of the skin, but it is still one step up from bonded leather. In any case, it is obvious that Chanel is cutting corners in order to maximize its profits and taking the customers for a ride. Not a good look.

Gosh, what a great video. You have such knowledge and you impart it so well. I’m a bit if a bag freak, also an old bird - I do love a quality bag, always have ..
Because I’m old and boring (as well as being poor), I always tend to buy good leather bags from the second hand or used market. I have noticed over the years that most bags have dipped substantially in quality - materials as well as workmanship. You are too young to remember probably, the brand Enny - Italian leather bags that were very expensive but superb. Sadly they went out of business, but I still have a few and always look out for them pre-loved, as they now call them.
For classic, quality, everyday bags I love the vintage The Bridge brand and the I Medici. Even used daily, but always looked after and cleaned regularly, they last and last and even manage to look better the older they get.
Forgive the ramblings of an old bird but couldn’t resist putting my little bit in to the mix ..

They still release some pieces made of top quality leather like natural tanned/glovetanned leather, but for some of the cheaper bags, the quality of the leather is questionable. This is all so absurd. I’m an equestrian and have a lot of experience with leather saddles, bridles, boots and various strap goods. The true quality aniline and vegetable dyed goods will last a lifetime if cared for properly. Those hides come from Italy, France, the UK and there are one or two tanners in the US. Also worth noting, there are now a couple Indian tanners who are doing aniline/vegetable dyed leathers and they are still working the kinks out but have come a long way.
Anyway, in the equestrian world, what do the selliers, strap goods and boot makers do when they can’t source quality hides? They STOP PRODUCING and apologize their customers for the delay. They certainly don’t churn out bonded leather garbage because they know their customers handle these items on the daily, and expect them to perform. Indeed, when the leather used for items with which to ride a 1200 lb. animal fails, it can literally be deadly.
So my theory is that this is probably why, by and large, Hermès bags are still superior in leather quality to Chanel bags. Hermès is a sellier. They know quality, durable leather even if they don’t use the same leathers for their saddles as they do for their bags. And they’re going to have quite a few overlap customers also - the horsey set who have an Hermès saddle, and also get their Birkins and Kellys. Those horse people are not going to accept a product made from glue, plastic, foam and leather slurry when they know what the real deal looks like from their $12k saddle.
Anyway, it’s pretty sad that a luxury house like Chanel clearly feels they can peddle this bonded leather hot garbage to their customers because they won’t face any wrongful death lawsuits, since their purpose is to sit on a fashionista’s shoulder versus controlling a horse. Luxury should always be quality, and Chanel is showing an incredible amount of contempt for their customers.

I honestly… don’t trust brand representatives. I’ve seen people talk about coach who’ve been told their pebbled leather is naturally occurring and what makes the smooth glovetanned leather smooth is a stretching technique that takes the texture out of it… this person whole heartedly believes what they were told by the coach representative… I feel like often times brands misrepresent their quality. I honestly… laugh when I see people wear Chanel costume jewelry… the cost is insane and it’s just glued in cheap crystals and plastic pearls… the jewelry isn’t set… it’s literally the equivalent of Walmart jewelry but at a luxury price…

I went to a Chanel a few few weeks ago and the bags they had on hand look so cheap. It didn’t feel like a luxury a luxury boutique and on top of that the sa treated me like I’m a little kid considering I can be her mom. Just sad

This is exactly why I did a major purchase of luxury bags a few months back. I knew that this change in how leather is treated was changing and not for the better. I’m so happy that I did!. I won’t purchase any more luxury bags until they either perfect this process..which I don’t think they can because it’s of the nature of the processing…or go back to the original way. Meanwhile. I have many many bags made prior to this change. The change was not just made by Chanel btw so check before you buy

Thank you for the video which confirmed my purchases so far and that it didnt just happen to a few batches of bags from the look. The taut stitching is pretty prevalent across a few models too : Classic flaps ,(both double and the mini) and trendy cc coz I am speaking for my own bags. The craftmanships has definitely deteriorated. I am suspecting either the artisan bag makers are under production pressure, (or just underpaid resulting in disgruntled workers) despite the massive price increase of the bags) or just a wilful cost cutting measure of Chanel (at the backdrop of astronomical price increase and reported phenomenal profits increase, Chanel is really pushing their luck too far or treating their customers sub par intelligence)
Time to stop buying Chanel and I hope this video gets publicized widely

I just bought a 23P medium classic flap in caviar, beige claire, from the Chanel boutique. The stitching is perfection. No pulling at all. Everything lines up. The bag is quality. I think with a supply chain as long and complicated as Chanel’s, there will be the occasional issue that slips through quality control, but we know Chanel stands behind their products and will make good on any issue. Don’t we? I think so, Lol. The biggest slip up I have seen them make is the design of the Boy Bag, where the hair can get caught in those two little strap posts. That is the design side. Now we have quality on the stitching and on the 22. Ugh. I once bought a bonded leather white ottoman. I never understood what that was. I knew it was cheap, though.

Wow. Very illuminating. Possibly the most interesting and de-mystifying video about luxury handbags that I’ve ever seen. Very telling and very disappointing. I’ve sold a lot of Chanel classic flaps simply because they didn’t feel luxurious. I’d get sucked in, thinking that Chanel is where I should be investing my hard-earned money, convinced by the SA that the particular classic flap I was holding was the only one in the country etc etc…. that this was a piece that I’d keep forever. Compared to other luxury houses, their lambskin from the last couple of years honestly feels like rubber. My favourite Chanel bag is a 10-year old piece. I think I’ll only purchase older, pre-loved pieces if I continue purchasing Chanel at all. Thank you for such an educating video.

Thank you so much! I wanted to do my best to just share information in a way that could be easily understood. There are some great leather RUclipsrs and obviously plenty of fantastic luxury RUclipsrs, but I haven’t seen someone really apply leather knowledge to luxury goods yet.

such an informative video. after watching super dacob video, i get curious to explore leather quality. glad that he mentioned your video! now thinking of it, i think my fossil bag is bond leather... cuz it claims as genuine cowhide leather AND it peeeellll. i was shocked 😭 the bag feels flimsy and plasticky. the quality is so different compared to the one that i bought 6 years ago. mind you i rarely used that bag too, and suddenly it peel?? and i am completely aware that full-grain leather is top quality. but now I'm very disappointed with the brand..

Great video! I know another youtuber also noted they felt their item felt dehydrated, some small areas on my mini rectangle from 22A felt a bit dehydrated but I still purchased/kept it and applied some leather conditioner which appeared to help. I agree with you that these qualtiy issues are very concerning to say the least. I'm wondering in your case since its a construction issue on your pink reissue (beautiful bag) what would Chanel do to remedy it if it gets worse? Also if you are looking for video suggestions, could you please do a video on how you care/protect your bags especially lambskin? I think most of us have the best intentions to avoid damage above the normal wear and tear but if you have any info/suggestions on what you do to correct anything like colour transfers, scuff marks/abrasion marks, etc.. that would also be great. Thanks for sharing ❤️

I have that bag in blue the one you have in pink. The 2.55. I have been terrified to use my blue since I saw your comment on your pink. Have you been using it or did you return it? Did the wear get worse? I just hate bags that are delicate.

Thanks for this timely and informative video. Very topical indeed. It is saddening to see the direction Chanel is heading to. It’s just my wild imagination and I have absolutely no proof / evidence whatsoever and I am not claiming anything, however, I can imagine a cost control mandate from the corporate management and how it translated into a compromise of quality so dire that even the the most unexperienced eyes cannot neglect.
Another thought that came to mind was if this potential new bonded leather was more environmentally friendly given the focus in ESR these days. I did a quick online search and I saw arguments for it (recycling unused leather scraps) but it can just be marketing, as I noted equal amount of arguments against it.
Either way, for the price being charged and the brand image which a good chunk of the price went to, this is not the elegance we all expect from this house.

    • @classicswithaquirk
      @classicswithaquirk  2 года назад +1

Thank you so much! In regards to bonded leather, I would much much prefer it wasn't a thing. Leather scraps can at least decompose in a relatively short amount of time. Bonded leather, since it has added plastics, will inevitably just add to waste in a much greater and long term way 😔
