The Rise and Rise of Balenciaga

- Demna Gvasalia has yet again trivialised the concept of fashion with the Balenciaga Spring 2023 show that was opened by Kanye West. Under Demna, Balenciaga has evolved from this truly historical couture maison that once dressed the Spanish royalty to a brand that brings questions to the fashion world that noone else would dare to ask. His work is uniquely timeless in a way and redefines fashion as an artform and as a business.

What did I miss from Demna's most viral Balenciaga pieces?
Ps. I absolutely hate that YT has marked this at 17 minutes, its 16:59 and I'll die on that hill
bottle sandals are not Balenciaga but a fan's concept of what they think Balenciaga would make
@@Deryque Someone commented this, I had no idea! the artist completely fooled me hahaha
excellent research
Ps. I love that from you. I never reached 170 cm. 5 mm missing... I'll die on the hill that my height is wrong on my PASSPORT.
the exploitation of children and satanic references?
its just so fascinating to me, as a Georgian person, how demna uses Georgian urban culture in his works. everything Demna has gone viral for is staple of Georgian ghetto areas, poor people and criminal. its even an ongoing joke in Georgia that Demna puts foreigner society in Georgian shags. I'd say he uses western cultures' unawareness of post soviet stamp on the freed countries as his asset and brings its raw version to the consumers unapologeticly.
I think a lot of designers since the 90s have been influenced by ‘the streets’, what we call sportswear is from chavs in England and Gosha Rubchinskiy did the same as Demna but for Russian low income areas, its an interesting cultural phenomenon because this is literally the first time in history that fashions have gone ground up instead of wealth down
ჩვენი სიამაყე 🙏
exactly what i was thinking!
Damn
It happens all around the world though. My mom is from Mexico and whenever these fashion designers take ideas from indigenous clothes from Mexico i show my mom the price tag and she scoffs saying her grandma can make it too and better lol
This aged like Milk left in the sun on a hot summer day 🤣
Covered in tin foil no less
Balenciaga would NOT appreciate what they did. Noway.
@@understitchYT Maybe you can make a part 2.
Absolutely horrible how they've driven it into the ground
todays balenciaga is pedos disneyland! disgusting!!
The Rise and "swift and precipitated collapse into the underworld" of Balenciaga.
The best title
@memopinzon Stay broke
Look at them now 😂
Can't wait for a follow-up video....
🤣😂
not with that recent photoshoot 💀
Yeah thats a CHOICE 😬
Thank you! I really needed to understand what this brand was about to understand the recent scandal. So yeah cancellation is their biggest viral moment I guess 😅
I'm glad you found value in my video, thank you so much for watching ^^
Wow. Not only your videos are excellent, the comment section is also a joy to read through. Blown away!
I’m so glad, I absolutely adore reading the comments and replying to people and having discussions, so I’m so glad that you enjoy that as well
Whew... maybe you gotta revisit the title in the upcoming months...
I know very little about fashion and fashion history but I’ve recently become curious and your channel has been a great part of that. thanks for the content. all the way from Lagos, Nigeria
Oh thank you so much, Im so hlad you are enjoying my videos, Ive even done Tokyo James who used to do a lot with LagosFW? id love to go 🙌
One of best Demna's trait is that he is such a Margiela fanboy since the beginning. Ordinary people casting, anonimity, dressing as a mindset, ready made clothing, and upcycled coutoure. He is living the Margiela ethos better than Galliano imho.
I think its very likely where he gets his design ethos from, he talks about margiela in quite a few interviews and its clear he is heavily inspired by him, but I see that more in his mindset than in his designs, whereas galliano I see it in his deconstructed works
I feel like galliano's own pieces and his vision is more glamorous or let me say too glamorous for margiela while demna is definitely fitting for it
form now someone wearing balenciaga I think of sick people abusing children! I think of pedos running free...disgusting!!
His biggest mistake was casting Kim K as his muse. No matter how many designer shit she wears, she keeps looking vulgar
@mo2chvc Also true. Galliano is a genious at the level of Mugler, Schiaparelli and Gaultier. I'm not sure Demna will be seen as such by future generations...
How the different fashion houses have longevity due to their close connections with the Nazis, educates people about how human motivations serve business interests.
Exactly, its all so intwined that often meeting the businesses needs to push a company means morals get lost
You fast already having SS23 down! 👏 luv ur channel and Demna is taking it!
I was WAITING for the show, I've had the show notes from instagram for a bit too, was very very excited for this collection
can’t wait for the next upcoming video: The Rise and Fall of Balenciaga 🤪
🤣😂🤣
😂😂😂
great video ! just so you know though, the balenciaga water bottle flip flop was a concept art by someone on instagram
I cant believe I was fooled so convincingly
This aged well.
I know, right 😂
ur videos are so brilliant. perfect balance of information (history, key points, etc) and ur own editorialisation of that information-both provide the viewer with context for the other. thank u for helping people to better appreciate fashion!
Thank you so much! Im so glad you enjoy them 😇
yeh!...what she said
Those thin windbreakers are the biggest money grab in fashion ever before sunglasses. 100% nylon cut out arms & sew slap a logo on and charge £1k for a product that only costs £10 in materials and maybe £10 in manufacturing.
Honestly anything made of plastic has those seriously high margins, but its because of those that they can sustain other parts of the company so its almost like a necessary evil 🤷
@@understitchYT yh it's sad really how companies get away with charging these prices there should be some regulation or government intervention on designer brands over charging customers with 2000% mark ups on goods lol.
@@Mainlyrock__1017 i think we would see less art at the other end of the spectrum if they did though, its certainly a trade off, but one that benefits the very wealthy
@@Beeoriginal33 art is anything the human being can create from his own mind. Clothes are art pieces. They begin from imagination, to the sketches on paper, to the hand made concepts, to the final product. That’s how cars are done and car desígn is considered one of the most emotional art pieces.

'Balenciaga by Cristóbal Balenciaga' is elegant, glorious, supreme, and incomparable.
'Balenciaga by . . . (new designers nowadays)' is stupid, ugly, and disastrous.
Cristobal Balenciaga: master couturier and tailor known for heavily structured garments with truly intriguing shapes.
"Balenciaga" today: plastic bags and creepy campaigns involving children.
So u down to do a rise & fall of balenciaga?
I don’t really make news based content, that’s just not really my thing, maybe in the future when we’ve seen how this all plays out I can make a continued video like a part 2 to this one
@@understitchYT bet bet I understand. I was just playing around, but it’s p lit to know that idea is in the back of ur mind
@@sydeeffect2 I have so many ideas for this channel, but Im trying to build a foundation for something I'm known for before branching out to my other ideas
absolutely loved this video, very inspiring, thank you for great work!
Im so glad tysm🙌
What a fantastic breakdown. Thank you for the information shared. Will definitely be binging through these videos
Im so happy to hear you enjoyed it 😇
Time for a title change😂 the Rise and Fall.
Its a multi-billion dollar company, even if this changes the image of the brand, I dont see them changing their infrastructure internally to actually hold themselves accountable, which means that they are now banking on people forgetting all about it before the next season 😬
I just read the New Yorker article as a coincidence exposing Demna and then this video showed up in my feed. Not a fashion nut at all but hey, this channel is gold
That article was really interesting, and a great insight into how his shock marketing affected himself and the brand, I’m really glad it helped you find my channel, esp if you’re not a fashion person im really happy to know you enjoyed the video 🥰
I think you need to do a part two or a re-upload!
I considered doing a video on Demnas life actually to try to understand this situation unbiasedly, but I definitely dont want to do another Balenciaga video so close to the original, there wouldnt be enough to say
Loving all the videos, would love to see one on Hedi Slimane
Hes such an interesting designer, but as far as I know he doesnt have his own brand, perhaps in the future I can do his life 🧐
hahah whoops, maybe just about him as a designer in general
What I will add is the Snow show he did was out of this world. We seem to now be seeing an apocalyptic world. I think they know things most don’t 👀
This video did not age well after their sudden fall 😂 now you do the rise and fall
This is a scandal, but I think theyll bounce back, no one has remotely thought about getting rid of the head designer, or the marketing or advertising teams, I think it’s only a matter of time before people forget
Don’t you think they should close and be in jail? Have you seen all of the info out there? They are sick and hurting children
@@sofiadiaz6698 they are not, take your meds
@@sofiadiaz6698 Well, they can't be jailed, they havn't done anything technically illegal, nor have they actually hurt the children in the campaign according to the parents (who are Balenciaga employees). But, saying that, personally, of course I don't agree with it, its an awful set of campaigns, it's just that from a business standpoint, I predict that the company is too big at this point for them to actually see any form of longterm affects (which makes it worse I know)
@@understitchYT I understand these particular images are not hurting the kids. But what I believe is that they are hinting us what they do in private. This is why I think they should be investigated. Everything screams cp apology. I really hope they close, but the sad reality is that they are just a small part of what is going on. I hope more people can wake up and see what is really going on.
We need to edit this video now due to recent events
If I could add on more, I absolutely would
"The Plastic Bottle" shoes you mention are not real. They were just a concept created by a artist called neondazer .
Ooohhhh I have been well fooled!
Beautiful video! Thanks for the content it's always nice
Thank you 😇
another great vid!!
Thank you ✨✨
Detailed and brilliantly researched content + beautifully delivered, thank you. I fear though the title now needs changing to the Rise and Fall of Balenciaga and extra content added at the end talking about the ad campaigns etc as this has become the defining Demna and Balenciaga story.
I would love to add more about shock marketing into this video if that was possible. Its caused the fall of so many brands because it is so risky. But they will recover eventually, even if it means changing the CD, and then maybe I can do a retrospective on Demna. But for not it will stay as a reminder of how far they fell
@@understitchYT thank you for your reply, very much appreciated. Amazing what I've learnt about the fashion houses from your content, I had, eg, no idea Coco Chanel was a Nazi! Shock marketing would make a good video indeed. In my humble opinion Demna has somewhat relied on shock tactics as the design element isn't all that, and some really worked, the digital clones I loved, I thought that was brilliant + loved the sound track too. Great but on repeat then becoming a little predictable and leaning on the gimmick a bit too heavily. I honestly think though they must have had a moment of madness, pedophilia, are you serious, as soon as I saw the plush bear campaign, before the controversy blew up, I thought 'that looks wrong, something about that makes me feel uncomfortable'.
been binging your videos and i'm OBSESSED!!!
Im so glad you like them! 😇
This video was amazing! Definitely had to subscribed
Thank you, Im so glad you liked it!
This video didn’t age well lol

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the seemingly new direction after what happened late last year. Can they rise again? Or has this current management's abhorrence ruined the name?
I dont think its much of a direction change tbh, I think its all marketing. But their recovery was inevitable at the end of the day, thats why I never did a rise and fall
Thank you for this video. and for adressin to the things, related to the situation in Ukraine, without any euphemisms. it means a lot ♥
Im glad you appreciated that 💛💙
Personally I associate Balanciaga with poor taste and not just in fashion
Please do not. Once there was this great designer Cristobal Balenciaga. He started this, closed his house, retire and asked to respect his wishes. The world didn't.
Balenciaga today: Horror.
Its very divisive, but I really enjoy his point of view
These are great video breakdowns.
Thank you so much, Im so glad you like them 😇
"The rise & Fall of Balenciaga!" Re-titled. :/
But I dont talk about the recent scandal in the video 🥹
the "balenciaga plastic bottle sandals" was not designed by demna; that isnt even in any balenciaga collection, it was a "fan made" concept
Yeah someone else told me in the comments, I cant believe I was so well fooled!
@@understitchYT it was so good, it went viral that Balenciaga had to post a clarification they werent reaponsible of it 😂

@@understitchYT I knew they were coming (I worked for Crocs, but it was confidential) but my phone rang a lot afterwards :)
Plus they have expended the range since then as the ugly shoe trend became a bit of a staple / or collectable! When ugly shoes became the new sneakers - in terms of collectors

Great video. In another video I saw Nicole Kidman (nice to see her in your video too), the sound designer was a model (and Demna boyfriend). The most amazing person was the model who was once Balenciaga's favorite model. She talked a bit about how she referred to Balenciaga as Mr. Balenciaga. She still looks elegant and classy.
She looks incredible, youre so right, and she still models so hard
Balenciaga is trash. Tbh if Ye didn’t promote it to the highest degree it would fly straight under the radar, but you’re videos are fantastic!
He has unmatched sway in the fashion industry, that is undeniable
this is such a informative video.
Im so happy to hear you liked it 😇(edit for wrong emoji)
Ugly fashion was originally started as a thing by Muiccia Prada in the 90s... Demna fused ugliness with irony, while Miuccia had always a more sophisticated approach.
Thats a great way to put it, Pradas nerdy fashions 100% couldve been the gateway
I find demna’s work at Balenciaga very interesting I wouldn’t buy the pieces being sold but the projects being done and the references are very cool
I'm on the boat with you there
I love them honestly and as a middle easterner in europe his work now (sporty, edgy, more considered as "ghetto") has definitely been the aesthetic of poc in europe for a while and I love how he as a middle eastern himself shows that through his pieces and how he made it "mainstream"
@@en2186 its definitely an evolution of the fashion that was based on chav culture with all thr tracksuits that was popular before, I like the evolution of that a lot aesthetically

super piece as always, great synthesis of a lot of info! just a note for accuracy: franco wasn't a nazi dictator but he was a conservative spanish dictator (it is true he was a nazi sympathizer if that's what you meant!).

I think they’ll come back after the scandal to be honest, it’s too big of a company to go away forever, but maybe one day happens I can do a recap of the whole thing
Perhaps a follow up video is required.. in light of this label promoting paedophilia?

Thats so kind thank you! Im so so so grateful to have 18k in just 6 months though! Thats an incredible feat for me and I am so proud. I think the growth slowed recently though because none of my recent videos have really hit the algorithm at all, Im not sure why, but it is what it is. I figure I keep being myself and putting out the content I want to see and eventually Ill have a hit to reach a wider audience 💕
I wish his show castings were more diverse tho. Theres more diversity on a single versace runway than demna's shows put together.
I think that’s true for most everyone, we just don’t see enough of it
Is there a devilish update?
Not yet, Im not a drama channel, but maybe in the future

Thank you 🥰
i'm georgian and seeing demna be so successful is crazy!
Theres so mcuh love for him from Georgia
I loved this video. Having moved to Canada from Europe, I’ve had to navigate a cultural shift in perspective, which can be tricky at times, especially where public opinion is concerned. What some consider artistic license, others will perceive as inappropriate and offensive. Perhaps the idea behind the latest campaign was to be present a raw and cynical perspective of erm…current issues, but dramatically missed the mark? But then why the blame game? Was it a bad idea that went too far? Insanely underestimated shock value? Or was the brand actually promoting the exploitation of minors? I can’t quite wrap my head around it 🤦🏽♀️
I don’t deliver intentionally promoting the exploitation of minors, but it is suspicious that the concept for the shit passed through so many people and not one person said that it was too far. We know from the history that they rely on shock value, so maybe that’s why, but it certainly has backfired in the end.
i'm georgian and Demna's huuuuge success makes me so proud!
I guess we all saw the new ad campaign of Balenciaga ...
It seems like the scandal is dying down a bit now, I can’t believe how big it’s been
Please do the rise and fall

in the words of myrtle snow : “BALENCIAGAAAAAAAAHHHHaaAaHhhAa”
She is in the thumbnail and noone (so far) has commented on it 🤣
Remember their last photo session with the child models?
That actually happened after this video came out
The comments talking about how this aged…you people are ridiculous
Best brand on earth
moment before disaster
Its certainly strangely timed
plastic bottles shoes is just 3d concept form internet, not real shoes
Yeah, someone told me in the comments, that artist got me good 😅😅
The Fact is:Ghesquière should last only a few months at Balenciaga. His role was to design something when they were approaching the big name such as Helmut Lang.He was suggested by Pierre Hardy(now a famous accessory designer). He agreed to do this this job because of he wanted to see the archive of the brand. After that he stayed with Balenciaga for 15 years.
I really liked NG, thought he had such an iconic and impactful rein, why was he not your taste?
Can you retouch on this topic? Even tho I still stand by this brand, I appreciate your perspective on it
I will do follow up videos in the future. But I dont want to be a drama channel, thats not the point of my videos. Companies have scandals and as a result that affects sales, *thats* my focus, not on the scandal itelf
*and fall
And fall at last indeed, he needs to be in jail
Hmm- This explain so much. The innovation literally stopped/died with its creator, Balenciaga. ¡Qué desgracia!
Time to take down the video my friend. I doubt very much that the effect of the campaign scandal goes away anytime soon. The Demna days are over i think.
I wont take the video down because it’s important to know the context in which the scandal happened. Knowing that scandal was part of his strategy it can partially explain why this was allowed to get out of hand in the end and causing the hard fall of Balenciaga. After all, if we dont know the history its bound to be repeated
Ghesquière's defining collection, for me, is FW 2008, then Spring 2008.
He was so good, he’s such an underrated designer today
What I seem to gather from this is that balenciaga is a marketing brand with ugly clothes
It’s all about the marketing, that was Demna’s whole thing
I am just seeing the Balenciaga contortion for the first time, it is interesting.
Balenciaga = so edgy going for the 'kiddie porn' look. SICK
Im surprised noone said anything before that campaign was released tbh
He is a pedophile, omg
The history was incorrect, if he made the wedding dress for a wedding in 1972 it would have been for Franco’s granddaughter (Carmen Martínez-Bordiú, 2nd Duchess of Franco) not his his daughter(Carmen Franco, 1st Duchess of Franco).

I don’t think it’s correct to suggest people who dislike modern day Balenciaga are just not intellectual or lovers of fashion. You can be both of those things and just not F with ugly clothes that are taking the piss out of fashion, making the wearer and their wallet the punchline. Yes, yes, we all need a little irreverence once in a while to cleanse our palette. Punk taught us that 40 years ago. And damage, deconstruction and utility can feel authentic and necessary at times. We figured that out in the 90’s. That’s all well and good. Then there are artists who can their own shit and designers similarly stunting and shocking for the sake of it, under the guise of being ‘intellectual’. Like, okay then. If you say so, bro. Get your luxury brand schmoney. But don’t expect us all to be wowed by these very expensive emperors new collections. I still Fs with this channel tho. Big time! 🙏🏿
I dont think its for everyone, certainly. Actually, Ive had many conversations with friends who get it, understand what hes doing, but just dont like it - and thats totally fair. Theres hundreds of designers and hundreds of styles, hundreds of journeys to their success (or failure), it just happens that Im more interested in the journey and everyones individual story than anything else (but obviously I know thats not for everyone). If youre interested in punk fashion though, I think thats sick, Id love to do a video on a child of the jago one day, I did one on his mum, but I just think theyre so interesting
@@understitchYT I like your approach. You’re very open and less cynical than I am.
@@gee_emm depends on the brand, I can certainly be cynical 😂
I find this so called fashion statments that they did so pasé, and childish and ofc nothing interesting. Probably because I had my Moschino fase, and because actually they were doing some critique that made sense. This is just a pick me girl rich's brat thing IMO

No update regarding Balenciaga’s most famous ad campaign? 😂
I’m not a drama channel, but I do expect that they will bounce back very shortly, actually, I’m expecting it in their new show tbh
@@understitchYT I’m actually a big fan of Balenciaga’s recent couture collections. Genuinely provocative, horrifically glamorous. Truly edgy. They brought shocking back. So I guess that’s why I’m a bit perplexed by the use of such a contrived, shock for shocks sake campaign. Along with presenting Kim K, the most over commercialized thirsty bore, as some kind of muse. Seems disjointed. Like if Kathy Lee Gifford was the new face of Rick Owens 🤣
@@mikeymasters8459 the actual artisans in the couture house are absolutely phenomenal, I really worry for them with the controversy that they will lose their jobs, because they are genuinely very skilled and should deserve to keep them. The problem is that DG is known for creating controversy, for all his businesses that way. It was always going to end badly, I just hope the wrong people don’t get the brunt of it, because they don’t deserve to be penalised
Thimister's collection was a masterpiece.
pretty sure the plastic bottle sandals were just a concept and not actually sold by Balenciaga
