    SOCKS!!!!! I FORGOT TO TALK ABOUT SOCKS!!! Haha I ALWAYS wear wool socks! I have some thick wool socks from Costco I like in the winter, and thin merino wool socks in the summer. Check the package and make sure there is at least 70% wool in the wool socks you get :) Thanks for watching!!

      Those Costco socks are very very similar to the brand name Smartwool socks of the same weight. Love them

      I’ve found that Fox River heavyweight thermal socks are awesome, they offer fit sizes, about 15$ a pair but they last years, and they clean well when washing them on hikes with just a little bit of dawn dish soap

I just wanted to say hi and thanks to you, me and my best friend are planing our first bushcraft trip next summer 😀. I am hooked and wanted to start sleeping in our back yard until my husband pointed out that our back yard is full of water... So I have to wait little longer 😀. So thank you and keep filming your trips, here is at least one student who wants to learn about building shelters etc. Stay safe ❤️

    Great video, Careena! Dear ol' dad said wool keeps you warm even when wet, and he was right! Also, I agree that wool base layers don't get that "funky" smell compared to synthetics!

  • @ryancooper3629
    @ryancooper3629 2 года назад +4

    I think one thing a lot of people in Ontario don't really think about or realize is that because of how humid this province is that down-based insulation loses performance very quickly. Down is incredible for extreme dry arctic climates but in humid environments wool is king because it retains its ability to keep you warm even as a dampness in the air permeates it.
    Side note, if you want to up your sock game Alpaca Wool was a game changer for me. Just as warm as normal wool but way softer and comfier with none of the itchiness. I like to support Alpaca Time as they are a great local company here in Ontario.

    Amen!! "No Bugs!!" Gotta love bombing around on your snowmobile. I used to ride my Dad's whenever I went home on leave in the winter. Used to be a lot of fun..... until I got it stuck once in deep powder, wasn't to thrilled about that!! Sweat my butt off getting it un-stuck and then froze it off on the ride home. Wasn't really well taught about "layering" at that time in my life. Watch out for barb-wire fences - those things will mess you up bad!! I laughed pretty hard at your boot modeling, not the easiest to model with the camera on a tripod. Loved the video, thanks for sharing!!! Looking forward to the next one!!

    An interesting thing I noticed about Baffin boots is that, at least for men, the listed weights indicate that the industrial boots tend to be a little lighter which is the opposite of what I'd think. I've had Baffin Barrows for years as I used to do a lot of winter forestry work, and they have the same insulation in them as any of the "regular" boots--I've never felt cold in them even at -20 deg F, and I have the added features of a safety toe and plate which have been tested by very large heavy logs and passed with flying colors. They're still heavy nonetheless, though.
    Regarding the rest. I am also a big fan of wool and try to avoid synthetics when I can. Good wool and down can be pricey, but they have great value in the long run and perform so well. I won't go into the specific pieces, but my winter gear is a mix of Merino wool, rough wool, yak wool, alpaca wool, and down.
    For wool glove liners, check out Icebreaker. They're great and not even that pricey.

    Agreed. I do the same. Mechanics gloves with a cheap set of kits that is lined with Sherpa material for cold weather. Under armor cold gear balaclava for the face. Mad bomber hat with the wool, moisture wicking long sleeve shirt, with wool button up shirt over that, and a outside layer that depends on the conditions as needed. Insulated pants for now, but looking for wool trousers for the future. I have the same boots. They are awesome. Paired with wool socks. My feet have never felt anything slightly cold in the winter. Great gear for MN as well.

    Yes, I find wooden mittens ( from Newfoundland), full mittens, three fingers and full " 5 " fingers are the best to wear. ( for SNOW blowing too).
    And ski mittens are better than 5 finger ski gloves. You can add hand warmers in them very easily.
    But, you can't take layers off if you don't take them with you. ❄❄❄👍👍
    Good Job girl.

    My first wool item was a wool buff, it was so nice, very slightly itchy at first be easy to get used to. Since them I got cheap wool gloves and maybe socks next, idk, winter in NJ, USA is wrapping up.
    Maybe do one for staying dry, boots, rain jacket, etc... since the Spring is right around the corner. More details though for that one, like what to do if some water finds its way in to socks or jacket.
