At 65, I just love watching young people doing what I can't do out in the cold anymore. I really appreciate that you do these videos with all your clothes on, unlike many others. You have mad skills!

Great video, I agree I think there are definitely hard times coming and maybe not to far away. There's a certain amount of preparing and readiness we all need to be to survive in a somewhat off grid situation, we prolonged power outages and have a certain amount of food storage to sustain our selfs for periods of time

Hello from Northern Missouri, Careena, you doing great! I’m 66 & getting ready to retire in the spring , & currently live& work in in Iowa. My wife & I are going to move tho Missouri permanently to our place hereafter I retire.think it’s great your trying to teach people these skills. I also agree tough times are ahead. Life in Canada is harsh. Most people just live in the big cities where pretty much everything is available right away. Many immigrants from warm countries are not interested in Canada at all, but move here in order to continue the life they had in their home countries, but in better conditions. Of course they go to the larger cities.
you are 100% correct. you are almost always safer in the woods even at night,, than 90% of inner cities at night. the forest has always been my refuge.

Careena, I think you nailed that. People have become unable to be even mildly uncomfortable. I think prepping definitely involves learning to adapt to being uncomfortable….living outside a 70’ comfort level, hot or cold, self discipline of substances, getting outside your comfort level, etc…

Yeah! I agree with you ! The safest place is always in the woods ( except for forest fires, and they are all set by people). Why is it most are scared of the dark ? But you are right ! The skills you develop in the woods can be useful all your life. In the US, what you are showing used to be taught by Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts, sadly these groups are gone, but by watching your videos, one can learn and get inspired. So keep up the great videos, thank you.

We built a cabin in the BC wilderness back in the 1980s.. bought a 4wd and an acreage to experience waldon pond or so we thought.. reality quickly set in.. 3600', we were in a snow belt, 25 miles from groceries, hauling water, the smoke froze in the air when temps hit 50 below, our entertainment was cbc radio, dark by 5pm.. hunters crisscrossing the property, no idea our prop had trap lines.. Then we sold it and beat a path back to the coast where we lived on a boat. Gotta love progress. 😄
There is an odd satisfaction with the struggles that go along with winter activities. I enjoy the extra challenges they bring. Activities like this take on a more primal feel which I feel can be exciting and a great change of pace to normal day to day.

Well young lady, The Army ruined me for camping a long time ago. I am 75 now and roughing it to me is Motel 6, they leave the light on for you.. You do a good job with your vids. To bad the younger Croud does not take interest in your vids. Keep learning and sharing, dont forget to teach your young ones, but have patience with them. Thank you for sharing, stay safe.

I read a book written by a US Navy SEAL in which he recommended doing something uncomfortable every single day, even if it's just an ice cold shower. I think you're right on, Careena!

I think you are bang on with regards to being prepared for anything that may happen whether it is a flood, forest fires.... I'm 63 years old and I take pride in showing my grandson and granddaughter how to start a fire using a ferro rod and what material to look for in the forest to start that fire or how to properly use their axe and silky saw. I'm also looking forward to seeing you complete all of your challenges. Keep up the great work. Thanks

My son and myself were back country kayaking Algonquin one time and met a young lady also coming out. After talking for a bit she mentioned she does winter camping there also by herself, no dog, I took my small border all the time. This gal was a dental hygienist in TO grew up in TO also. Amazing young gal. I admire those that aren't afraid to venture and explore. As a youngster I would fish and if I caught some trout I pulled out a piece of tinfoil and had them for lunch right there along the river. Best slimming down recreation I've ever had. Didn't always catch fish.

As a person that grew up near the 45th parallel, I miss the winters represented in your videos. I currently live in Ohio, but your videos remind me of the winters of my youth: cold , clean, and vibrant. One would assume that a man of 67, like myself, has no interest in cold camping, but I love your videos. I have the gear, just not the cold. On the 45th parallel you had a chance, but I currently reside in Ohio. Such a bummer. (Not only because I am a Michigan grad, lol!) I hope to travel up north eventually, but where is winter? I guess it lives in Canada now, sigh...

Getting out is not just a hobby, it's a necessity. All the gear in the world will just get you further into trouble through false confidence, if one doesn't have the skills to properly use that gear, and the only way to develop those skills is to learn and practice them. Also, skills rust. Doing something once then letting that skill sit aside and rust, will also get you into trouble. You need to break out those skills, every once in a while, and knock the rust off of them, or you'll lose them. Going out and practicing learned skills not only keeps the rust away, but also builds your confidence in those skills. Survival is twenty percent gear, forty percent skills, and forty percent mental strength and confidence. You need all three to be successful. Another great video. Thanks!

Agree with you completely and I would add, that the longer it has been since the last time you practiced your skills, your body has gone through changes creating physical barriers. Example, the arms tire out much quicker because you haven't been using those same muscle groups to cut up firewood for quite awhile.
@@williamevans6468 Absolutely. The one thing I would say is this though. It IS important to work those muscles out, and to try and keep oneself in good shape, but I've read, seen and watched a lot of the "STHF" type channels and, IMHO, they all focus way too much on the physical and militaristic aspect of survival. I'm 60+ and yes I have benefit of some military training, but more importantly, have been in the outdoors (hunting, fishing, camping) all of my life. Sure, I tire faster than I used to, but not so much that I can't get the job done; although I will suffer a few sore muscles the next day ;-) . Age and physical ability will limit some activities, but should not be considered a barrier to others.
@croakingtoad4472 100% agree with you. Only reason I added that response is because I just got home from a ski trip through the Team SemperFi fund and I haven't skied in roughly 6 years so I am feeling the legs. But more importantly, when I read your initial post, it made me think about the last time I tried using an axe or hand saw to do anything with wood and I remembered how my arm muscles felt everytime. I don't care for the militaristic channels myself but the same holds true which is if we aren't doing the hiking, sawing, swinginging an axe, etc, its just one more skill that needs to be sharpened after spending time away.
@@williamevans6468 Yeah I too get that. I'm not a big cold weather person, so every spring, I have to work on getting myself back into proper shape after a winter of near hibernation. ;-)

Absolutely correct Careena, push yourself outside your comfort zones. It will pay off looking forward. Think of the situations you could be in out on your canoe trips etc. Yes, build the simple 'A' frame, etc. Bushcraft can teach us so much.

Good talk on building your skills. I'm training in 2 main skills right now, wood heat by hand, and endurance racing, I completed a personal challenge of 89 km fat biking on snow yesterday, -23C. Now I have to go cut 15" pine logs lol.
I watch a few different channels, and I learn from all of them. Your channel seems slightly closer to my heart I think because I think the way you think and approach camping seems similar to my ideas. I want to say that I’m inexperienced, so it’s not like I know anything, so I’m not comparing myself to you at all. I’m a complete novice. I just like your style of camping. So cozy out here in nature eating and keeping warm by the fire is underrated love the simple tent almost like my own lavvu simple quality gear is the way to go.. Son its spring time nice to look forward for some warmth eventhough winter is beautiful and theres something about being out in the cold even when freezing.
By the way the different and hard times is just around the corner its gonna be tuff!

Always enjoy your videos Careena. Have seen so many that are just, well, blah. You talk, and what I really like, is you are actually doing what is needed to set up camp etc. I should start to push myself again, just, well i did enough camping on Uncle Sam's dime and found living in a GP Medium in Saudi was not a lark. Then there were the times in Germany and Ft Riley where I drove my "tent" around. Only it weighed about 54 tons and made a hell of a racket! I drove tanks when I was on active duty. I also admit it scares hell out of me being in the woods at night. Watched one too many Big Foot videos I guess! Continue to do as you and your husband do, I will always support your channel. I salute you!

i love to that as well to camp in the snow but we don"t have snow in my country philippines but somehow here in hong kong atlest winter i tried to camp at winter cold day and its fun yah its really challenging but its fun to learn such skill like that
