parfocal and hyperfocal are actually different things. You said at 2"54 "is almost parfocal" you mean that the hyperfocal distance is reached quite easily (because of lil sensor mostly). Parfocal is when you zoom in (with a zoom lens) and you're still in focus. But I'm not sure actually so if someone can confirm, it would be nice
Obviously the phone has its limitations, but to be able to do a comparison like this with a straight face just blows me away at the capability of these things!
Maybe removing the polarised lens and you will have a better comparison, the iPhone don’t have polarisation so most of the comparisons would be revisited. As a photographer you should have thought about this. I used polar pro accessories with litechaser and using the circular polariser made a great difference. A fair review would remove the PL filter 👍
That's exactly what I wanted to say. Some of the Sony photos had the sky with a different nuance of blue and also the sun and leaves/ trees were more powerful in color, but the editing was not made 100% fair because it's not hard to give the iPhone photos the same colour saturation and vibrance. The review was not 100% honest, it's clear that Sony will be the better camera, but editing the iPhone photos was not taken so seriously.
I shoot my 12 pro max raw files all the time. The images are stunning coming from a phone. And i shoot them to post on social media. So the resolution is just fine for that.
3:05 The 85mm lens should lead to approximately 27% more pixels per object, so one would expect to see more detail with the 85mm lens, if the distance is identical. 3:19 Of course, 17mm leads to more pixels per object
Why are there never non stationary Subject shot comparisons between phone and real cameras? Please compare birds in flight or sports with a phone vs camera.
Does ProRAW have any quality/information advantage over "conventional" RAW captured on camera apps such as Adobe Lightroom or does it simply capture RAW with some AI tweaks?
So great review. I got a Sony Xperia 1 III and try to photograph like an alpha camera. But didn't have an experience from mirror-less camera. I now feel comfortable as a novice to take quality pictures with a phone and not have to spend 2500+ for a camera, and another 2500+ to take a quality video and picture editing class. But still like knowing if I decide to take my amateur photography to another level, there are plenty of things to learn. So now it’s a real choice.
But my 36 megapixel Nikon D800e has been with me for 10 years so the cost vs your phone isn't so far as I'm sure you've bought at least 3 phones in that timeframe.
@@toddysurcharge771 totally. In the last 10 years I’ve had 6 phones. A 60$ walmart Samsung, a iPhone 4(240$) Sony Xperia z3v( trade in), iPhone 7(100) iPhone X(full 1000 over 2 years) Note 20 Ultra(1000 over 2 years), iPhone 13 Pro Max(trade in) so I’ve spent about 2500 in 10 years for phones. But finally we have phones that match the quality, and can compete with the same quality. So yes my last 10 years I have spent 2500, but my next 10 years with the trade in program, the value of a used iPhone, and now the quality of pictures. I look to spend next to nothing. I traded the iPhone X, and got 800$ off towards the iPhone 13 Pro Max, over 2 years I will pay the rest off which is 11$ a month. But look at that I got 800$! for a iPhone X after 4 years that’s crazy. eBay and Amazon have em both for 300 ish so to get 800$ is crazy. Now in 4-5 more years the iPhone 13 Pro Max will carry a 1000$ value and trade it in in 5 years or so for whatever iphone and over the next 10 years I don’t spend anything. What’s the trade in value of a 10 year old camera?
So true, it actually exposes the Phones, it reminds us that pro cameras got better from the 90s, some people are stuck in the past, they don't understand. That why bug companies will never use phone camera to print out posters and signage
Thanks, I like your videos. Dont mean to be rude but how do your iPhone edits look so flat with terrible colors? Its a fantastic camera(s) with those Sony made sensors that can get great colors, especially in ProRAW. Also, who looks at photos at 400%? No one. Ive been a professional portrait/fashion photographer for 17 years. Just did a shoot for a swimsuit company yesterday, outdoors in great light. I shot 3/4 of the shots with the iPhone and the rest with my a7III with my Sony 85 f/1.8 and Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 The client preferred the iPhone shots in nearly every outfit. They are not blowing the photos up to 400% and pixel peeping or even making large prints, its all for their website and social media. Lets be honest, thats where most our work is going these days anyways. I could actually use my iPhone for most my work these days.
That’s why I have uploaded the RAW files to a cloud, so you could play around with those if you don’t like my colorgrade - it’s a matter of taste) about 400% - it is for those who watch content on smartphones and to basically see any difference through RUclips and such a small screen
I’m really not educated in photography. But, you’ve managed to show very clearly where the gap remains with pro cameras. They look natural, complex and beautiful. However, what this phone pulls up in comparison is just mind boggling.
Did anyone actually download the raw files to see for themselves? The iPhone filles are impressive for what they are but they start off with an HDR look, start off with shifted colours (not talking just colour temperature) and don't have close to the same editing latitude, especially with the highlights. That said it's obviously better than nothing (JPG). It's obvious that it is impressive what we're getting out of a phone, but if you didn't explore the files it's important you have the right expectations as to what you can process with these files. I'd treat the iPhone with a more in-your pocket straight of of camera experience than expect to edit every raw file extensively out of it. Just a heads up since the video presented a very good job of matching each other (some work). The apple raws don't look like that, and without a reference target you'll be pulling sliders for a while.
The digital smoothing of the iPhone makes the faces look playdoh-like. There’s no replacement for displacement although the iPhone photos do look very good for what they are
Excellent video, thanks! I have both an iPhone 13 Pro and Panasonic Lumix GH5. I'm seeing similar results and I'd argue at least in terms of AF, the iPhone 13 Pro is consistently more in focus than the GH5. However, with MF and antique glass primes, the GH5 still has a place in my kit, but I find that I'm using it less and less with each new smartphone iteration.
Hahahaha you really didn't give a chance for the tiny iPhone. All those lenses used with the Sony are premium and really expensive. Obviously the Sony is way better, in all aspects, but to have such results in sensors so tiny, shows how powerful the computational photography is. I'm looking forward to the moment when iPhone or even Samsung/Sony start to use 1" sensors. Great video!
Sensor size doesn't matter when you're shooting in good light. The difference for real cameras is distance and moving subjects and low light. Try to take a shot of a frantic drummer at a concert in low light with a cell phone.
@@toddysurcharge771 not totally correct. A bigger size gives a lot more information, dynamic range, background separation and so on. But obviously the difference isn’t as clear as in those situations you mentioned. In the case of iPhone, the processor (computational photography) is making up for the gigantic difference size.
I think the iPhone 13 pro max held its own in this comparison video great pictures from the Sony and iPhone and I know which I’m going for, Hint, No bulk. Great video, thank you.
Again Iphone 13 really good but behind... but some forest photos i liked More than sonys.. i Wonder if theybmade a fullframe camera with similiar software like Phone has...... i Wonder why isnt there already a camera like that.. 🥴
Great video as usual 👍🏽. But I would like to see the same kind of comparisons with Android smartphones like S21 Ultra, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Pixel 5 and especially 6. 🙏🏽
To me its no contest a7s is the winner. I think the shots from the iphone are decent but their are flaws in the computation i cant ignore. The shots where the iphone looks cleaner at night is because of the ai noise suppression and sharpening. Example In the very last picture on this video the leaves in the forest loose depth and color and become a neon green blob with hard edges. While this is noise free it looks completely unrealistic so i end up preferring the noisy photo of the a7s where i can still load the raw and make corrections like adding sharpness and a touch of noise removal or a very slight blur to make the noise less obvious. I do really like the way this was done balancing the color so the comparison was focused only on the computational photography and how the 2 cameras treat the images. Great video comparison im actually curious to see how the xperia 1iii stacks against the a7siii in terms of capturing the image details.
Xperia 1iii is a disapointment.i thought it would have an edge over smartphone cameras atleast but nope.iphone, oneplus 9 pro are still comparable.it only has that fast focus advantage but it does poor portrait and struggle in lower light.low battery, decent user experience its just not worth it
@@stephaned3072 it mostly a issue for people that refuse to use the pro app and only stick to the basic or auto mode in the app when it has several modes. This channel is 1 in a handful that actually does a fair camera comparison.
@@delicrux i only watch photographers review.but i have personally compared xperia 1 iii with 12 pro max.i use pro app btw.iphone handles highlights and flares better.even getting more detail in shadow.portraits also.i only use the camera app for night mode and it blows the sony.for a phone that is mainly for camera purpose it should blow the other smartphone easily but aint the case at all.and considering the other benefits the iphone, and other phones have its not worth it at all
@Stephane D photography is typically done to capture the a memory. If the scene you remember is dark then a accurate photo should reflect that same level of darkness. Unless you want a unrealistic photo then sure the iphone 13 will capture things that were not visible. I have seen many people complain saying the sony not capturing detail that the other phones are. White balance on the sony can be adjusted manual y in the scene by selecting the bright white in the scene best way i have seen photographers do this is by using a color card with the tone of white they want to use this allows for specific color temperature and allows you to add a correct white to the scene for the adjustment. Once its set in that location colors will be even more accurate. Regarding night mode Best way to shoot is tripod with increased exposure and slow shutter speed. You can add external ambient light or diffused light to the scene or shoot as is. Also a timed delayed photo so you can take your hand away from the phone while it takes the long exposure photo to reduce shaking. If you expose for to long the image gets grainy so it is a fine line to ride to get the right image. The difference is you have to adjust manually for this on xperia like would on a professional camera for every scene you want to capture. The iphone ai chooses the settings for you the only saving grace is the raw mode where you can try to do the corrections in post to make it look natural. Problem arises when you want to remove hdr on the iphone or correct the sharpness or get the correct detail like freckles skin tone or texture those things are all gone after it processes the photo in iphone. dont believe me take a picture of plants wood or gravel then on a computer zoom into the surface you will notice it starts to look like a vectorized painting with really harsh edges. Grass and leafs loose color and detail and some images become flat with no background separation. Its not just iphone samsung and a few others have the same problem due to the way they handle hdr and sharpness. With that said im not by any stretch saying the xperia is perfect. It handles photography in a more professional way giving the tools to do the job and getting out of the way of the process as much as possible. I dont think the iphone is bad i think it does what its target audience wants that is fine. Can computational photography take a pleasing image yes. they made a ai find whats most pleasing in photography and made it apply similar changes and effects to their phone photos. Is it a accurate or realistic representation of the scene typically no. But people enjoy it so that's fine. I personally have had trouble with getting accurate photos and color on phones this was why i returned the s21 ultra. Now im waiting to get the xperia because i don't want to buy a separate camera like the a7siii. Here is a well done review and pro photo shoot done by some youtube photographers. Also of course the channel whe are on does a great and very fair deep dive on the 1iii and iPhone 13 James lavish compares the xperia 1ii and iphone 12 promax he starts with the basic app comparison only and then 8:49 he compares basic and pro against the iPhone 12 pro max. A more fair comparison would have been with the Sony at 25mm. Due to the different aspect ratio, a 26mm lens will lead to more pixels per object than the iPhone. With the 26mm lens, the Sony will have approximately 7% more pixels per object than the iPhone, that's the same effect as if the Sony had a 13.1 megapixel sensor. 25mm would have been more fair regarding the angular resolution. (The iPhone is equivalent to 26mm regarding the diagonal field of view, but it is rather equivalent to 25mm regarding the percentage sensor area of objects)
Guys remember you are watching compressed video by RUclips. Get professional camera and then the iPhone, upland pics to the PC having 4k screen and you will see night and different between both. Cool review man BTW:)
@@godswilllaks1530 no worries. I would advise to look for Panasonic G9, fujifilm xt4, Panasonic s5 if u are on the budget:) but if got money and can get expensive lenses then canon or sony. Well sony has good third party lenses. G9 and Fujifilm has cheaper ones.
For professional job is expensive camera. For normal people on holiday, iPhone is best choice. The stabilisation of 13 pro is best just on handheld for video shooting.
You should do this with the king of portraits Pixel 5a or wait for the pixel 6 pro next week. Pixel 6 pro probably going to be the camera king in smart phones
so close it doesn't matter unless your blowing the photos up, but 99% of iPhone users are posting to social media. For the price difference in cameras the iPhone is superior.
Having a Sony would be a dream, but the price for me is not. The iphone 13 pro max is also expensive, but for what it delivers it would work very well for me to take some photos and videos. I hope to be able to buy one day. For me it would be great. the problem I see is a customer thinks you are an amateur doing work with a cell phone. There are customers who do not want to know about their cell phone model. These only see that you use a cell phone, period. Who does the magic are us and not the equipment. If you look too hard, Sony is superior, but in a print, or in a video for social media, it will make little difference. I think that an increasingly simple setup will soon be a trend, one that draws little attention and with results - which we already have - unbelievable to think about. I get the Iphone!
It's still easy to spot an iPhone or cell phone processed image by the HDR and over sharpening. Not even talking about lack of creative depth of field control, or in-camera white balance. You need to be realistic about showing up with the wrong tool for the job even in the hands of a talented professional.
With the age of social medias. Theres no need to buy very expensive sony cameras. Just buy an iphone. Because those differences mentioned can easily be edited on iphone apps Exceptions to those enthusiast and do this for a living ofcourse

Parfocal is when you zoom in (with a zoom lens) and you're still in focus. But I'm not sure actually so if someone can confirm, it would be nice

Loving these comparisons. Great work as usual. Waiting for my iPhone 13 Pro to arrive...
Thanks bro))

No pro here. Have sony a6300 and xpro2. Definitely going to sell them. That’s no reason for me keeping them anymore.
Good comparison but not surprised that a full mirrorless camera is better than a phone
The Iphone 13 pro actually looked better in some portraits as far as detail in the hair and face.
You can download the RAWs and double-check it) I’m not really agree)
Jason Parker, I agree withou you.
You can check again and see weird hair bokeh and over sharpness on iphone potrait
The digital smoothing of the iPhone makes the faces look playdoh-like. There’s no replacement for displacement although the iPhone photos do look very good for what they are
There wasn't a single photo in this video where the iphone had the better exposure.
Thanks for your video, Subscribed indeed ✌
Thanks))) I appreciate it)
Excellent video, thanks!
Thanks William, stay tuned!)))
Good job bro 👏

Hahahaha you really didn't give a chance for the tiny iPhone. All those lenses used with the Sony are premium and really expensive. Obviously the Sony is way better, in all aspects, but to have such results in sensors so tiny, shows how powerful the computational photography is. I'm looking forward to the moment when iPhone or even Samsung/Sony start to use 1" sensors. Great video!
Thanks mate) stay tuned)
Sensor size doesn't matter when you're shooting in good light. The difference for real cameras is distance and moving subjects and low light. Try to take a shot of a frantic drummer at a concert in low light with a cell phone.
@@toddysurcharge771 not totally correct. A bigger size gives a lot more information, dynamic range, background separation and so on. But obviously the difference isn’t as clear as in those situations you mentioned. In the case of iPhone, the processor (computational photography) is making up for the gigantic difference size.
If you buy an expensive camera with a cheap lense then better you dont buy a camera.thats the point
Remember, this is Phone camera.Amazing

Aren't you comparing Sony Vs Sony in this video? The iPhone's cameras themselves use Sony sensors. But, as always, a great video comparison.

The sensor doesn't do much by itself. There's image signal processors and lenses too.

Great video as usual 👍🏽.
But I would like to see the same kind of comparisons with Android smartphones like S21 Ultra, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Pixel 5 and especially 6.
🙏🏽
I’ll try my best to find pixel 6 for a review when it’s available
Thank you))) I really appreciate your in-depth comments!
Regarding night mode
Best way to shoot is tripod with increased exposure and slow shutter speed.

I also did with 26mm as can clearly see in the video. I just wanted to use faster lens for portraits because a lot of my viewers asked for this
Most American reviewers only compare the iphone to DsLRs while there are other devices such as current Vivo X70 pro plus
I'm Russian by the way) I've already compared iPhone 13 Pro Max to Sony Xperia 1 III and the comparison with Honor flagship phone is coming soon
