I like very much the straightforward style of you presenting the S1. In my general overview on all available Sony mics I was able to only tip on it by now, still didn't manage to do the detailed review I was aiming for, since there are simply too many microphones flying around at the time. Exactly this is where your review comes in handy - the RUclips algorithm was doing a perfect job linking these two videos near to each other - which again exactly is how I stumbled over your content. Good to know, tha people will find a decent english spoken review on the ECM-S1 already through you. Thanks a lot for doing this serious job and the only thing left to me is now to create a German version one day! Please - keep on rocking!
Thank you very much for the kind feedback! And with AI, different language dubbing is probably a thing we'll start to see a lot more of in the near future. But also, it's a great chance to start your own channel, when you see a need, jump in and you'll probably do very well! Thanks again for watching!
@@RayOrtega No worries, I have some channels running, plus I don't necessarily think that AI over everything will be the best solution. Aren't you as an audiophile concerned that your voice might sound funny by the modification into a different language? Anyway, we live in a universe full of possibilities ... All the best!
@@S-LAB It may not even be my own voice at first but if the content can help new people, in other languages, I would be fine with some tradeoffs, it will get perfected over time. Stay well!
you raised a good point, when you uses omnidirectional mode, there isn't really a second mic on the back, which makes it sounds less good than a tula mic per example, whgen you're facing the back side.
Thanks, I was really happy with how it sounded on my voice as well and this is helpful feedback because I often tell people that you never know if a mic is good for you until you hear it on your voice cause the same mic can be very different on different voices. Each mic will accentuate a different part of the frequency range or even a mic that is fairly flat will be different for someone who has a hi or low voice. Another issue is processing. Depending on how someone else processed their audio (EQ, compression, etc) that can drastically change how the mic sounds.
why other brands don't do bluetooth microphes?? this one is designed for people who already own a sony camera, but there could be a way to remove some unecessary features for casual users and reduce the $470's bill (the price in france)
There have been others but this seems like one of the first to get it right. Hopefully that means this tech will make its way into more devices and at better prices. Thanks for watching!
@@RayOrtega i pick the tula mic because of it's internal mic more designed to record 2 people facing each others with one mic, and for the design, but i wish there were a bluetooth feature cause i don't have much time and money for video editing.
It has a headphone jack so you can plug in headphones and hear your voice but I probably wouldn't recommend this without a Sony cam. I'm not sure the price would be worth it to use just as a USB mic. You can technically connect wirelessly to a computer but then you are so close to the computer, why bother.
This made me recheck some stuff and sadly I don't have the mic anymore to do more tests so I can't say 100%, yes. I thought I used it with my own a6500 but then I checked this page support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/accessories/compatibility.php?area=gb&lang=en&mdl=ILCE-6500&cat=29 and you'll notice that this mic and any other mic that uses the hot shoe, needs to be switch to analog mode. I'm not sure if it then also needs the cable in the case of the 6500 because this is what I thought the analog option was for. So it's possible that the digital functions do not work with the a6500 but I also thought the Mi shoe was able to use Mi capable products. Sorry I can't be more helpful, really wishing I had the mic here to test! My guess is that I filmed this with a more updated Sony that I was also testing and that maybe the a6500 was just used for b-roll since I can't record with the camera I'm using as a demo. Curious what made you think you couldn't use it with the a6500 because I don't discuss that in this video?
@RayOrtega @RayOrtega Thanks for the detailed reply. I saw the mic on your A6500. Though you didn't explicitly say it was compatible, I got excited for my A6600. 😀 Unfortunately, as per the link you provided, it only works on analog mode. Thanks again for the awesome video.
Hey Ray! For someone that needs a portable mic to take to and from an open office environment everyday, would you recommend a mic like this over the Elgato Wave 3? I’ve narrowed it down to these two.
Hi, Terrance. I'd say, just based on price alone, I'd probably pick up the Elgato unless you need the wireless connectivity of the S1. I haven't used the Wave but it seems like it's nice and Elgato seems to make really good products and looking at the description amzn.to/4cQQ7Nu I'm reminded that that software you get with it looks really good as well.
Probably a stupid question but would this mic ever be mounted ON the camera itself if a rare situation comes up where I need to outside my typical environment (like a run and gun situation).
Typically no, but could you...sure ;) It has a 1/4"20 thread on the bottom so you could get a mount that would allow you to do it however I don't see it being very useful, it's in no way made to do that and since it's a condenser mic., it will transfer even the smallest noise made by handling the camera. But this mic system has a mic that pairs with the receiver that IS made for exactly that. So, same receiver, different mic, made for wearing like a lav for camera work amzn.to/4etp8J2
Can you keep the mic powered by a powerbank so it doesn’t run out of battery but still have it connected wirelessly to a Sony cam so you could basically have infinite battery?
Darn! This is a great question! This was a demo unit for review so I had to return it and can't try it out! Seems like a good chance it might work but also makes me wonder if it thinks it's plugged in, will that affect the signal. Hopefully I'll get a chance to test it some time.
Hi Nayddoh, I just tried it out: your theory works. Once the S1 is transmitting it's signal to the receiver (connected to A6700 in my case), tha magic is happening: perfect audio quality. Then on, system already running: when I connected a power bank to the USB-C port of the ECM-S1 no decrease or any kind of modification is happening to the prestine audio signal (I was counter-checking using studio headphones straight out of my Sony). But there is a sign which tells us, that the S1 is definitely charging: beause in this moment the green power on button indicator turns orange! 🟠So, If this was what you were worrying about - no worries! 👍
Welcome back Ray
Thanks! Fun to be back in the comments;)
Good to see you still kickin. Safe travels into 2024.
Have a great remainder of ‘23 and happy new year!!

This mic really fit your voice well. I have seen other review where the host's voice sounds weird.

Hi there!
I have no sony cameras.
Can I hear the sound of voice input into the mic with my headphone set like logitech pro x2?

that would be hilarious...the best ever sounding narration by the camera operator.
Happy new year ..... Ray 🙏🏼
You too!
And thank you for this review.
More videos Ray! We miss you.
Thanks, Chris, I'm gonna try!! Really appreciate the support!
MEGA EFFORT VIDEO HOLY COW BRO!

@@S-LAB thank you so much!!!!
Almost £400 in the UK currently so a bit expensive for bedroom podcasters. Sounds good though.
Agree it’s pricey. Requires someone who makes multiple kinds of content I’d think. Thx for watching!
Podcasters are gonna abuse that stereo function 🙂
Lol. Throw in some reverb while you’re at it;)
