I think the original idea (in the 40's and 50's) was that nobody believed Superman could be a regular person. For all they knew, he wore that superhero outfit all day and went home to a secret lair. Nobody in Metropolis ever thought he would be one of them. That he'd live among them and be a working man.
Plus any photos of Superman would be taken of him with lousy cameras while flying faster than an airplane.
That is a big part of it, the assumption that he's never in disguise. Why would he??
A reasonable asumption until it's not.
And I'd add to that there are a lot of similar-looking people around, especially in a big city. So this could totally work

Agreed! So far it’s been pretty fun content! I hope they keep it up! I also like that they approach it TRYING TO PROVE it’s possible. This type of energy going into just makes it positive and fun! Even it ended that no matter what it wasn’t possible. Just that difference makes it wholesome fun! These people are great! I have been watching them for some time and just realized I am not sure so ever subscribed. 😳 If I am not I will do so right now!

The "Clark Kent going to Starbucks" thing has already been tested, accidentally. It worked.
When they were filming Superman back in the day, Christopher Reeve used to go to a nearby restaurant for lunch. When he went in costume as Superman, he got mobbed. When he went in costume as Clark Kent, no one noticed.
And yeah, everyone should watch that incredible scene where Reeve's Clark Kent is about to tell Lois that he's really Superman (but then changes his mind). The character shift in each direction is incredible, and all without any change in outfit or anything.
I freaking love that scene
Supes body language in that scene is incredibly powerful, but Chris Reeve was playing 2 different characters, not just an alter ego of himself unlike Jake, so it makes sense he could fool people better. You have an ability to make Superman more exaggerated than he might be if Chris Reeve was Superman and in the same way, he could make Clark Kent more exaggerated as well. Jake has to go far from himself to play an alter ego and that can be difficult, cause his body language is pretty normal, so he has to be exaggerated to play someone else.
And unlike Jake, Chris Reeve had more control over his body as an actor and experience in being different characters, so even if you saw Chris Reeve as superman, in costume and all, you could still believe he was someone else if he walked into the room as Clark Kent.
But I don't think Lois Lane would believe Clark Kent and be unable to see the astounding resemblance between Supes and Clark. But Superman had gone through a lot of effort to essentially gaslight people and I'm sure few people were willing to entertain the thought that the geeky journalist next to them was a super powerful alien that could melt cars with their eyes.
To be fair, it's not like people knew what Christopher Reeve's face looked like when he was filming Superman. Superman's face should be incredibly famous in-universe, while Reeve was probably nowhere near as well-known.
Brandon Routh based his performance(s) as Clark Kent/Superman off Christopher Reeves and I think he did a great job, even though I don't think the movie overall was the best. I did prefer the tone of Superman Returns to Man of Steel though and I wish Routh would have been able to make more than one Superman movie.
@@btf_flotsam478 yeah thats the whole point. nobody knows who clark kent is, everybody knows superman. at the time, nobody really knew who christopher reeves was yet everybody knew who christopher reeves as superman was.
I think this was more a testament to Jordan's acting ability... but getting Sam is definitely a big win.

I like how confident he is after reading an article that says Superman's disguise could work on people who don't personally know either persona. Then he proceeds to try to trick people who personally know him. And of course, he only fools them by literally covering his face. I feel like a real experiment of the Superman disguise would be to find some reason to be in a room with a stranger, leave the room, "disguise" yourself, and the reenter and see if they notice.
Impractical jokers did something like this, they have to talk with someone then see how many times they can talk with them with different outfits

I did this thrice by removing an article of clothing each time and just changing where my shoulders were
But Clark Kent is a journalist in a place that would cover stories about Superman and it's not like none of his co-workers wouldn't be familiar enough with Clark Kent to not recognise he is Superman via an image. They might still disregard it as being somebody that looks similar, but there is no way that nobody working with Clark wouldn't have made the connection to some degree.
@@skyblue2708 have you read the comics or just seen the movies and stuff? He does a lot to change his look. He moves his face muscles and stuff in only ways he can, completely changing his appearance. He also changes his stance, wears loose fitting clothes to give him that dorky look but also hides his build.
His face looks different, his height is different, his body doesn't look like superman. And he let's himself get pushed around by people after they watch superman get shot by tanks and stuff.
According to Batman, Clark puts more thought into his disguise than people realize. He wears oversized clothes and slouches to appear smaller. He also changes his walking gait and speech patterns. WELL DONE JAKE!
He also talks quiet, puts on an accent and acts shy and weak, and he blends into the crowd. But superman is loud and obvious with a booming voice and lots of confidence and strength and colorful patterns that stands out from the crowd, they're complete opposites
I like this idea, and another comment I found. In which that even if his friends and coworker thinks they look the same. They would think that, "they're definitely not the same guy, a doppelganger, maybe"

@@asgacc8789 Additionally Clark Kent/Superman is quite anonymous in appearance. Caucasian, slightly above medium height, slight tan, dark, short hair. There are literally thousands of men in Metropolis alone that fit his description.

Henry Cavill did this test also himself. He went to New York, stood under a giant superman billboard wearing a superman logo t-shirt and glasses and waited to see if anyone would recognize him. He said he was stopped by 2 people, one asking for directions and one for something else... cant remember now but apparently it works.
People can't tell it's Superman because they're not expecting Superman to be in their presence or amongst them. Or for us, an A-list actor in a massively public and everyday space. There's an expectation that was set of both Superman and Henry Cavill, so when the unlikely happens, it happened because it subverted our expectations.

People are busy about their day noticing other people around. And when they do and see someone familiar like a celebrity, they wouldn't stop to point out or they'll be ashamed to get them mistaken as someone they know so they just shrug it off maybe it's just a look-alike pretending to be that person.
I think a more accurate test of the ‘glasses and a curl’ disguise would be if you try it with a celebrity. Have them come in with the opposite of their normal look, without their hair done up or anything, introduce them as a new hire and have them being orientated by the team and see if anyone twigs. The real reason the superman effect works, is that everyone that works with clark kent, only know superman as a celebrity (ie, closest they get is shaking his hand), exept lois lane (supposed investigative reported) she must have severe myopia
It’s also worth noting that in most interpretations of Superman, Lois figures it out pretty quickly.
They should try it with Adam Savage. He's not only a celebrity but a legend to most of this guys, and I believe he'd be into it. Something simple, like dying his hair (since he already has glasses), wearing uncharacteristic clothes and a change of mannerisms would do the trick. Plus I'd be surprised if Mythbusters didn't address this very trope already.

I think celebrities have an easier time hiding in plain sight because of how much they work on their appearance before anyone gets to see them. Woth how popular the "scruffy" look is for male celebrities, and how many of them we've seen completely cleaned up AND rough etc, I think female celebrities have an easier time of it. Any woman that you're used to seeing with a lot of makeup work and stuff will be almost unrecognizable with no makeup on.
The funny thing is, I remember reading that around the time they were doing promos for Superman, Henry Carville actually went out dressed like a regular dude and stood next to one of his posters and still didn't get recognised. Most people aren't expecting to meet a celebrity in the wild so they just go about their day ignoring them like they ignore everybody else.
John Stockton was recognized in Barcelona by Americans. Even a lady with shirt with his face on it didn't recognize him.

How about this? One trope is how people's friends who are super heroes always disappear when the hero appears. After several events where the friend disappears and the hero appears, no one ever puts it together.
Try introducing an office mascot who comes around often, but don't tell them it's you. They will never see both you and the mascot in the same room, see if they figure it out. Have someone say the mascot is for a sponsorship deal, and he is just getting some silly backstage footage (gives excuse for someone to record everything).
Come into the room often as Jake and often as the mascot WITHOUT letting them figuring out it's you.
Wait, I actually love this idea. This HAS to be the next one.

Actually superman has addressed that, by often bringing Martian Manhunter to impersonate as Superman while he continues being Clark, and the world has seen Clark Kent reporting while Superman is present. Besides that, within the DC universe not a lot of general populace knows about MM’s a shapeshifter, so that doubt never arises either.

The biggest problem with Clark's & even Bruce's secret identities isn't that they would never work, it's that they only need to not work once.
That's kinda been addressed for Batman: "the butts match!"
This is why I love the idea that all of the Metropolis low-level criminals know Superman is Clark Kent. If they know Clark is going to be at work, they have a better chance of not being caught during the day, and they don't want to tell their superiors because then they might be ordered to do something stupid, like attack Superman when he's "vulnerable" at work.
I unironically think Batman's identity would've been figured out a LOT quicker than Superman's. Aside from certain characters like Lois Lane, no one gets to see Clark and Superman face to face at the same time, and even if you do, even when taking aside all the mannerisms and posture differences, people don't actually even assume Superman HAS a secret identity. He flies around without a mask, people just think he's a god who flies around constantly.
Hell in one issue, Lex manages to scan Supes' face and connect it to Clark's, but he simply assumes he made a MISTAKE since despite all his intellect, in his egomaniac mindset, it doesn't make sense for a godlike being "wasting" it's time on mundane jobs and mundane people.
Batman however specifically uses shadows and darkness to his advantage, primarily at night, it would instantly make people debate who he is. The problem is since we know where he operates, know his MO and know somewhat of his financial situation, I don't think it'd take long for people to figure out that a rich guy who happens to be shredder af and who happened to be completely gone for a majority of his young adult years, presumably training who also had his parents gunned down by a criminal which sparks a motivation for being a caped crusader, is Batman. Bruce Wayne would be AT LEAST the primary suspect in couple of weeks

Donald Trump secretly roams the New York City streets at night in a mask and beats up criminals. What is the likely hood of this being discovered by someone: criminal, paparazzi, or the reporters?
I've read in the novels that there are more things to change their appearances. Like Clark buys suits/clothes 2 sizes to large and slouches, throwing off his height when compared to the revealing Superman suit where he has close to perfect posture. Throw in some pitch and accent changes and people are more likely to think Clark just looks like Superman. Plenty of celebrity look-a-likes out there.

The glasses disguise I think works better in reverse. Taking someone who wears glasses everyday, you're used to them wearing glasses and you never see them without it, to all of a sudden not wearing glasses. Maybe throw in a middle part and turn into a side part? 🤷♂️ Loved this video
I think you're right. I watch TFL channels, and Tommy (the son) had Lasik recently and started appearing in videos without his glasses. If he had changed his hairstyle and added just a couple of mannerisms like Jake did, it would have taken a few minutes to notice.
FYI: this is how the historical Ninja of Japan worked. They didn't run around in black suits with masks, they were the gardeners and servants that the higher-class nobles routinely ignored. ;)
This happened to my buddy at work. So he always has glasses and has always had shoulder long hair, his glasses also gives his face some framing, and also helps to enhance the visual of his eyes. But one day, he comes in at work, the day before he had got a haircut, and it failed, so it went really short (he was not to happy) then he had also missplaced his glasses, so he walks into the office, short hair, no glasses.
I do notice it's him, because i have seen him without glasses once before, but my boss who has worked with him for 3 years, walks up to him and shakes his hand like. "Oh we got another new guy today? Welcome, welcome!"
And my buddy just goes. "Yeah... it's uh, nice to be here again."

The most jarring for me is someone you’ve known with a beard your whole friendship suddenly shaving it completely clean off. I remember a friend of mine doing that and I played Smash with him for like an hour before he was like “hey you know I’m Ian right?” and I was like WAIT WHAT

I think having the "inside job" person giving Jake 100% credibility as they worked with him as the AC guy in the studio helped a lot, too.

Something else in Clarks benefit is people don't know he HAS a secret identity. He flies around maskless, to assume he has another ID is the stranger assumption.

The justice league cartoon had a great gag where lex body swapped with flash, unmasked him and realized he had no idea who he was still.
Like if u unmasked a burglar, you still have no idea who they are and statistically would be unlikely to re identify him later, even in a lineup.

Thing is, Supes closest friends sell the deception too. Lois and Jimmy treat him like a farmboy from Smallville in the office, especially Lois. It would be important to have some insiders to sell the disguise, to make up stories and to cover for you. It's a lot tougher without it.

@@DrAmazingAs another HVAC/r technician I feel like i could answer this. Monthly, be sure not to forget, do it every month! ( I'm lazy though and haven't cleaned/changed mine in about three).
Real answer is it depends. Do you have pets, are you in and out of the house alot - change/ clean it monthly. if you don't have pets or maintain an absolutely clean home and dust frequently you can get away with two to three months. As long as your filter isn't black every time you service it you should be good.
The way they had a delayed reaction at 17:43 makes me feel he could’ve walked around for a few seconds after taking the mask and hat off 😂
It's not just the glasses, he also changes his hair, posture, dresses in baggy clothes to hide how muscular he is, speaks in a higher, more insecure tone and a bunch of small things like that (at least in the comics)

Doing the sponsored hellofresh segment made it too obvious. But if he had picked a different segment, I think that disguise would have worked.
I'm utterly delighted by this experiment, but I think it'd have worked even better if it was a celebrity that no one in the office knew personally, but was very recognizable - that tracks with the article at the beginning, where the studies say that if they didn't know Clark, it'd be much easier to fool someone into believing he was a completely different person from Superman. Still, amazing work!
They certainly have the connections to procure a celebrity. Someone like say, Adam Savage is a bona fide celebrity in my book

Henry Cavill could do it.
One thing with Superman is that he completely changes his posture and mannerisms as Clark Kent. It also kind of has the celebrity lookalike effect, where people write off the fact that they look alike as a coincidence. There were even real cases where celebrities lost their own lookalike contests.
Moral of the story: if you cover over half your face and change your voice, and cover the entirety of your body, disguising yourself is super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
Don't forget that even then, you can only faintly interact with people. By the time that he made the reveal both times, he had only been a background character shuffling around under the handling of someone else in the office, and they expected for someone new to be there.
If you want to test this in reality, you need to actually interact with your colleagues by having a conversation with them. Even the Cavill standing on the street below a Superman billboard test only really proves that most people won't pay much attention to random people in public spaces.

I would love to see Jake try and do the classic trope of leaving one room and returning in a superhero suit! If he can manage to pull that off without someone seeing him mid-change, he's cut out to be a superhero for sure!
The reason no-one recognizes Clark Kent as Superman is because no-one expects Superman to have a "secret identity". They assume he's always Superman, I mean he doesn't wear a mask. That implies he has no identity to hide. He *also* wears clothes two sizes too big, slouches, and raises his voice an octave when he's Clark. At most, you'd have people see Clark Kent and wonder "Man, that guy looks pretty similar to Superman, I should tell him- nah, wait, he probably gets that all the time."
That's what some random person in public thinks when they see Clark. The people that see him every day at work are the problem, especially because it's a newspaper who's front page is a picture of Superman all the time. They're seeing Clark and Superman every day. Those people would see through his disguise just as quickly as the Corridor people saw through Jake's 1st attempt.
Thank you! People forget all those details all the time. It's why he went to theater in school & college. To learn those tricks to appear different in each identity.

To be fair, I feel Christopher Reeves' version of Clark Kent is the one that should be the control test rather than Henry Cavill's version.
Reeve changed a lot of things with his Kent compared to Superman. Posture, voice, personality.
Other than being masked which helped a lot, I think Jake excelled at also changing his posture and voice enough that it didn't give him away.
I agree, I think most iterations of Clark Kent is just him being himself then he plays a superhero.
Also I'd say this experiment is bad because they set up the office with false information and a credible person heavily implies that his fake identity is real.
I think Clark Kent works because his strength doesn’t come from giant muscles, but from his alien physiology. So, he is a skinny guy, and that plays into peoples perceptions. They see him lift a bus, and their brain fills in the blank of him having giant muscles, even though he doesn’t.
@@pdonettes It was said that due to him working on a farm all of his life, he naturally had well developed muscles until his powers kicked in when he was about 16-17. His physiology makes him grow muscle faster (that is why he looks skinny when he gets hit by a nuke but gets buff again when he is in the sun). He had to buy weights to put in his apartment so that it would make sense (Due to his super strength, he didn't know how much he should be lifting so he ended up buying light weights. Lois ended up picking them up and told him that they were really light)

I wear a hat and uniform at work and when I see people from work outside of work they sometimes don’t recognize me until I speak to them. The same happens to me when I see people with a new haircut or without a hat they normally wear.

The whole "change in posture and voice" thing is there in the older movies. In the 1978 Christopher Reeves movie there's a scene where he considers telling Lois the truth about his identity and you can see him go from Clark to superman in real time.

I think also it was mentioned somewhere that Superman had some peculiar Effect to his Irises, and his Glasses were so thick and kind of distorted that you couldn't see it. So like if Jake had been wearing some blue contact Lenses, he could have gotten away without wearing Glasses.
I would love to see you guys test the "Quick change" cliche. Have something happen and then Jake disappears batman style to quickly change into a full superhero costume in the most random of places, grocery store, restaurant, subway station. It kind of blends the whole batman disappearing cliche with the superman disguise cliche of "Wait, wasn't that guy here 5 seconds ago in a suit?"

Magician Arturo Brachetti was able to do multiple "quick changes" during his shows, but that's one thing to do it on stage and another one to do it anywhere with your everyday clothes.

'The mask does most of the work' said everybody, well that's why Clark Kent originally went around with a fedora which hid the top part of his face with the glasses when he slouched. Everybody forgot that after Christopher Reeves since nobody wore press hats anymore. Though Christopher Reeves and Richard Donner did partly try that. Another thing most people forget is Clark Kent actually wears much larger clothes than his size to seem baggy and unfit which fools the body type. So I guess he could be considered the trendsetter for baggy clothes.

I also do not recognize coworkers that I've seen daily (always wearing a mask) for the past year if I run into them outside without a mask and not in their work clothes. I've never seen their whole face and it just doesn't register outside of the work context.

The thing that I'd like to see if it were possible is the spy movie trick/trope where you can vanish in a crowd (whether it's like using breaking eye contact like a bus or disguise quick change like Ethan Hunt leaving the Kremlin) without anyone seeing where you went or call in a consultant like Apollo Robins to teach how to use distractions to steal an item from every staff member's desk and then see if you can do it.

Couple things, 1) I love how Jake did the full Clark Kent and altered his voice, his stance, his posture, even how he walked, it's no wonder nobody realized it! Also, 2) I think this perfectly explains how the masses don't notice Clark, especially at work. Lois knows and is the perfect, trustworthy foil to his disguise. She works like Jordan to lay a groundwork of getting others to drop their guard, and be the respected voice who says "what? You're crazy, Clark looks nothing like Superman". Especially in the New York-themed Metropolis where thousands are just unremembered faces.

In reference to what Niko said during the reveal video, changing the posture, voice, and demeanor IS part of how Superman disguises himself as Clark Kent. Clark slouches, has a nasally voice, and is generally a pretty meek person; the complete opposite of Superman.
Superman also has an advantage over Jake in this disguise experiment; no one on the DC Earth would ever expect Superman to just be sitting in an office right next to them. The expectation bias, "oh there's no way that person is here with me," is really powerful, especially since most people don't want to make a scene.
He also wears oversized clothes to hide his muscular build. Generally a wallflower you wouldn't think twice about
I remember seeing a video a little while ago about a mom not recognizing her own son because he snuck up on her and he was in a place she would not think he would ever be in, so she did not realize until after he revealed it was him. He also had grown a beard so that helped.

The old Superman movies did make a better Clark disguise by making clark talk very light and sometimes stuttery with some shy factor, while Superman talked with confidence , and personally I wear my glasses and when I dont use them or forgot them, people who have seen me with my glasses all the time actually took them about 2 to 3 minutes to realize its me, so one way it does work, love the vid, and keep on the amazing content :)
You gotta do the MCU disguise, wear some sunglasses and a ball cap and sit around in public to see if the crew recognizes you

A few things that people tend to forget, and it's the sort of thing that makes Jake's work a bit harder, is that:
a) Superman is never around others for more than a few minutes and wears such a colorful, striking costume that his face isn't what people pay attention to the most
b) Clark Kent developed his persona long before Superman was a thing, so fooling friends and coworkers was easier than if they had to start doing it after everyone was already familiar with Superman's face
c) No one would even think Superman has a secret identity, seeing how his face is uncovered, so they'd have no reason to suspect anything
d) Clark Kent's shtick is about not calling attention, basically blending into the background. That small limp Jake is doing and his hunching might work to differentiate from his alter ego, but also immediately draw attention.
I'd say that with all of those drawbacks against him, Jake did a pretty great job.
Bruce Wayne is the persona Batman is who he is. Superman is the persona Clark Kent is who he is.

Yeah, really Jake is Clark Kent - a friend and colleague they've known for years. If he became a superhero now, with different mannerisms, distracting costume, only seen in little clips in the news or online, etc... it'd probably take a while before anyone figured it out.
Let's be real though. In this day and age, Superman's disguise would never work. Maybe it would if it was before facial recognition systems were a thing (which was when Supes first came out), but now? No way.

I always liked that scene in the 1978 Superman when Clark is going to reveal that he's Superman, but decides not to. He takes off his glasses and his entire body language changes. He looks like four inches taller, fills up more of the frame, and changes his voice. The key difference is that Clark Kent presents himself in the most forgettable way possible. He's always hunched over with a soft stammering voice and showed little confidence.
If Jake was that first character and there was a flying laser-eyed superhero out there that kind of looked like him without glasses and hairstyle, it would be very difficult to be like "oh Jake must be that guy." Even if you talked to him every day.

Another thing to keep in mind: all the Crew already knows Jake and he has to do double time to fool them. Clark Kent shows up in Metropolis almost at the same time as Superman, and both personas introduce themselves as different people, so you have less of a reason to associate them.
I also did some thinking and came up with this:
The differences between Superman and Clark are greater than with Jerry and Jake. The similar appearances are kind of obvious but we do have people in our world that look a lot like celebrities so it's not that unusual. Also, someone like Superman suddenly appears out of nowhere and helps prevent catastrophies (around the world even). I'd say people would assume that he has got to be doing this almost 24/7, so no one expects him to have a regular job. And just like in this video, people at Daily Planet would be too preoccupied with their work to notice. Someone might go like; "Hey have you ever noticed that Kent guy looks like Superman?" but then just dismiss it because of the stuff I stated before.
Also one is as a human and the other Alien, Clark pretends he's weak, clumsy etc now and then to further the separation.
I think it goes further than that. Supes grew up as a farm kid from Kansas. His normal accent, behaviour, etc, came from his upbringing. In addition, he grew up having to hide his powers from people he knew, so it would have also come naturally to him to be reserved, hesitant and trying to stay in the background. Shoving him into a large city means he instantly comes across as an awkward, bumbling, shy-but-nice rube.
So, in a way, it's Superman that is not his "real" identity. Superman is a role he's adopted, a performance piece.
Hence, Jake was doing it backwards.
They needed to start with a genuinely awkward/reserved Jerry-the-AC-guy who is in the office for a couple of months nearly full-time to do a major HVAC renovation, and everyone gets used to him. Then train that person to also come in and play a larger-than-life, centre-of-attention, Jake-the-business-development-consultant who only appears for a few minutes a day to get in everyone's way before dashing off to do something else. And see how it takes before anyone says, "Hang on..."
(Aside: I don't think Superman/Clark Kent thing could ever actual work with Lois and Jimmy. And the more modern the setting, the less likely it would work at all. But in the '30s, everyone except Clark's friends might have been fooled.)

Well, superman actually change his posture to hide his prominent phisique, encorb a little and change his voice and behave in a complete insecure manner. Noone ever would think he is Superman. The movies just didin't took the whole thing, just the glasses.

Jake has a whole different skill set from the rest, it fits so perfectly. this isn't exactly "vfx" related, but it sure goes into the expanded cinema layer of behind the scenes effort and theory into what goes on. I'd doubt most the rest of the team could pull off what he does with these silly experiments. She's also the best cohort you could have.
A great test would be to take a celebrity that is recognizable and then bring them to the office as a potential new hire in a mild disguise with a different name. Would be interesting to see if you could pass them off as a regular person.

The thing is, also, Superman is famous and Clark is a byline and the quiet guy at the office. The glasses and curl are really just small bits of distraction, the big distraction is the fact that there's no reason (seen from the outside) that Superman would even be working at the Daily Planet, or keeping secrets. He wears tights and no mask, and openly states that he's an alien named Kal-El. People wouldn't assume that guy is trying to hide. He seems like an open book. Even if everyone at the office agrees that Clark looks like Superman, they would just make it an in-joke. Cat Grant would call him Superman to tease him and nobody would actually take it seriously. He could go to a Halloween party in a cheap Superman costume and people would still probably suspect nothing, because even if Superman *were* keeping a secret, it doesn't make sense for him to tempt fate like that. Common sense overrides the superficial observation that they look alike, because there's a simpler explanation...which is that they just look alike, as some people do.
It works because it, from the outside, makes less sense for Clark to *be* Superman, not because it's a disguise. Even the disguise seemingly not making sense works in his favor.
Christopher Reeve did this masterfully. Look up the scene in the movie (called "Superman Disguise" on youtube) where he completely changes his appearance by how he acts. It's completly believable to be fooled by his acting. I never really felt this with Henry Cavill, even though I did like his Superman a lot.

Although there are stories of HC standing directly in front of a Superman poster/advertisement/whatever and going unrecognized, so...
Also some excellent concept art in All Star Superman that shows this as well, Quitely draws superman as more a classic circus strongman build so when he slouches over he has this much more exaggerated "gentle giant" look and tucks his neck in to fatten it up. He also wears ill fitting clothes to play up that clueless farm boy persona. Always loved that he chose that build for Superman, it works on so many levels.
The next test Jake should try out is getting into a superhero costume in an emergency. We see superheroes change from their citizen persona into their superhero alter ego in a matter of moments, even without superspeed. Be interesting to see whether he can go from interacting normally as Jake, to someone triggering an alarm, and then Jake having to run away and switch personas and return.
Deadpool and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man deconstructed that. They took realism and showed that they take time to change into their costumes.
Those like Superman and Supergirl are justified because they have super speed to help them.

You should try the clothing swap. So taling to a person while wearing a green shirt and then when they dont look for a second and turn back all of a sudden your shirt is not green but blue. And see if they notice a slight change and see how far you can go with that to a point where it is getting to obvious

you should do a test, where somebody that nobody has met yet, runs in with a half mask like batman or daredevil, says a couple iconic lines, and then leaves, and then see if those same people recognize them without the half mask. I always thought you could recognize that half of their face & their voice, so it would be interesting to put that to the test 👌

I think that the disguise could easily work. Assuming the person in question doesn’t know both Clark and Superman personally. Convincing someone that you’re a separate person who they also know would be nearly impossible without drastic appearance changes. (Which obviously doesn’t work for this test).
But for most people who just know Clark and only know Superman as a superhero/celebrity? It’d totally be doable with mild appearance changes. Since you can easily play on someone’s expectation that this random mundane person they know/met isn’t the godlike figure they see on TV, even if they resemble each other.
I have to say, even the glasses thing would probably work on me. Since all humans look practically identical. And I'm horrible at recognizing faces. I have met people and then seen them almost every day and not recognized them at all for weeks. It's to the point that when a random stranger says hello to me or starts talking to me I just assume I'm supposed to know this person. One thing that has been helpful is keeping a note on my phone with a list of all the people I've met, what I know about them, and a physical description, but I've got to find a good defining feature because if someone gets a haircut I might just not know who they are.

I think it's worth noting that in most of the Superman stories, Lois almost always eventually suspects Clark Kent is Superman. In fact he has to go to pains to continue to keep up the charade to her specifically, like making it appear as though Superman / Clark are in two different places at the same time, etc.
Still a really awesome project and really cool that it worked out so well. :D

i'm a physician and work exclusively in a hospital. i can attest that when i see nurses outside of work wearing "regular" clothes instead of scrubs (i only wear scrubs 50% of the time) i almost always have a "glitch in the matrix" moment because i often cannot fucking place the person i've just run into at the grocery store or restaurant even though i've seen them often enough at work to expect to have a reasonable amount of familiarity with them. the only times i this *doesn't* happen is when i have a more significant degree of familiarity, ie we work closely together daily but this is only a few nurses.
the context component of the trick here is super important. i see these nurses frequently, but there are literally hundreds of them and one of me, so they are almost always able to pick me out of a crowd in public but i can't do the same for them, the night team i only see in passing when i get to work but they all know who i am. wearing "normal" clothes often is enough to baffle but don't forget the majority of nurses don't wear makeup to work and wear at least a little when out and about, between the makeup and the clothes is typically enough to defeat my brain.
This happened to me a lot, except replace the scrubs with fast food uniforms, lol. People still do a double take sometimes when they see me in street clothes irl.
Its also in big part the way people conduct themselves. The nurses in job act very different from in private. Not that obvious obviously, but its enough.

I'm really happy with these videos where Jake gets to do more than just the ad read. He's a really energetic guy and I love seeing him get to do things for more than two minutes at a time
To me, it's always been about people seeing what they want to see. There are some comic explanations too like the glasses changing his eye color and such but I think for a lot of people, they just wouldn't assume Superman walks around in regular clothes and this dorky dude Clark basically just blends into the background for most people.
Couple this with the fact that as a society men are generally socialized not to really look or acknowledge other men, that plays a huge factor. Women innately have a leg up here in detecting this sort of disguise, however, the reverse is also true... I think a superheroine might find it alot more difficult to disguise herself in public with simply glasses and a new outift... She'd have to change her hair, makeup style and mannerisms to have a hope since women are under far more scrutiny.
What I'd like to see is a gender swapped version of this test, to see how many (or few) changes would be necessary to pull this off amongst people you know. THough, you wanna go all in on this... here's the experiment.
Do up a Superheroine Poster, inside a Starbucks or a McDonalds, basically any restaurant/cafe where people go. Have the volunteer, same woman in the poster, be sitting across from it, wearing glasses, or glasses and hair pulled back.. see how many people notice.
There's all kinds of fun variations, but it all clinches on the expectation to see that person. Now you could also do this in a cafe the team goes to all the time, who frequently sees x person. Change one or two things and body demeanor and see if you go unnoticed.. go in at a different time, etc..
