Fallout 4 - Scaffolding & Junk Fences (Tenpines Bluff Build)

- The junk fences and scaffolding were made for each other - it works especially well for small 'fort' settlements like this Tenpines Build.
It does take twice as long though - so err, you were warned.

I always have problems with the junk fence having gaps in it and not snapping. That rug glitch is genius. Thanks man.
Hi Davey. An Idea for greenhouses I came up with yesterday:
Place down a few fish racks from Far Harbor, and use the Pillar glitch to put a planting box(for planting crops with no dirt/space) on top of the racks. Then you can place whatever plants you want on them, and it looks pretty good. Much like the pre-placed ones in Graygarden.
fair play, that looks class. since i started playing (christmas) walls have been my great hurdle in settlement building. you've done now 3 types that i love and i constantly want to put them together. with guard towers, and turret stands. your various builds have provided me with a great deal of inspiration.
Finally something cool to do with Tenpines! That settlement's a pain in my rear.
I love the builds that you do, they always come off with a very pleasing Fallout flavor to them. It makes me sad that you don't have access to the only mod that I use, that lets me build structures and sink them into the ground, turns off the auto-timeout of the workshop area so I don't need weird circles of rugs to place objects on the border, and lets me change the scale and size with just a few keystrokes. It would be awesome to see what you could build without the ridiculous limitations that Bethesda imposed on settlement building.
I'm looking for this mod for xbox one x. Where do I find it?
That looks so great!! Ty for your vids. Love watching and always learn so much. Your builds are amazing!
Dude I love your builds! I can only imagine the level it's gonna reach when you get ahold of mods!
Though it's a bit of a pain to do, sticking 3-4 of the slimmer metal walls (or wood, if you prefer) each side of the scaffolding prefabs (using the concrete pillar) is a pretty cool way to have towers in smaller-scale settlements. Stick a bed and stuff up there and make an almost crows nest-like structure. Haven't tested it with concrete yet, though I imagine with some jiggering you could get it to work.
So many great ideas! That looks amazing!
Awesome as always
I like your videos and how you organize the channel.
These no mods builds are so great
This is what I've been waiting for
I started using the scaffolding long ago and came to relize this my self. In oberland station I built fortresse walls out of random pieces about three floors high and it came out so junkie but intimidating at the same time took me twice as long to do than it did the actual settlement it self but the results were worth it.
Putting scaffolding right next to the junk walls is such a gread idea, it helps with the security as well cause now I can have the guards up on the walls to protect them and it makes the walls seem stronger!
Another lovely build, I've spent the last few days turning the mechanists lair into a nice place, downloaded mods to make it work tho!
Did you know you can use the rug glitch with the select all glitch? Place the rugs down, then a junk fence. After that you can place the post or column by the very first rug and select all. Then you can move the junk fence up or down.
Oh and another cool thing with these combined glitches is that if you make a mistake after you place an object or maybe just don't like how its placed, you can select all again on the post or column again and it won't select anything else besides the object on the rug, even if the object is touching something else
I believe norespawns is quite pleased 😌
I've been using scaffolding whenever I see an empty space in my settlements or if it's just lacking like next walls to look like it's being worked on or something but it just makes it look so better
If you do the rug glitch the way you normally do and then and a concrete pillar at the last rug hold the button to select the pillar it will only select the first rug and you can sink the fence and move it more.
Great stuff, as usual :) So I'm holding off buying any DLCs until I get through the main story, but.... while taking some recent inspiration from you I found that I was craving a bit more "structural integrity" out of my structures with 2nd and 3rd story overhanging walls. I came up with some solutions that make my buildings look more stable:
a)"pillar-glitch" two wooden fence posts on top of one another for a taller beam, then glitch the whole beam underneath a 2nd story wall or an unsupported roof piece that looks like it needs some support. (maybe this is not needed once I get the Far Harbor barnhouse beams :P)
b) nudge one of the spike-free Raider poles into the corners of an overhanging piece, so that it looks like a dodgy supporting pole.
c) the wooden bridge can sometimes be used underneath a 2nd story overhanging piece, and clips a bit on its own without any help from glitches.
I don't have any video-recording software to show what I mean, but I can try taking screenshots if anyone is curious to see what I mean. Hope these ideas come in handy to someone!
I like to use the big broken barn doors and the boxcar doors combined with the pillar glitch to give my wall more of a scrappy vibe. Davey you should try it it actually looks pretty good
Norespawns voice is so calming
I have managed to combine the rug and pillar glitch; first placing object on rug, then applying pillar to rug. This allows for things to pass through other objects and the ground, however it does result in losing the rug underground.
Definitely going to use this soon. I'm doing a Raider playthrough and I'm going to make Finch farm into a labor camp with a few "Raiders" as guards and everyone else as farmers.
i like alot of your builds they inspire me to be creative in my game
good job on that settlement
Here's why I love construction (compared to wasteland workshop), you have had like four 15-20 min videos on this where as you only had 1-2 on wasteland. I hope the vault one is even better:)
+Tom Shepherd Long live the mole people, down in fraggle rock. lol
+zenbuddhist71 no u need the reptilen brotherhood there
Combination of Rug glitch+concrete pillar select all method works ... just place the pillar near the 1st rug that used for rug glitch then use select all method... it will select only the pillar and the 1st rug, the rest of object(s) top of the 1 st rug won't be affected by select all.. the result will be the junk fence will be sinkable and clip through objects easily ;)
I find the scaffolding technique to be extremely useful in terms of building. It just gives a needed structure and frame for the layout as you progressively build.
Hey davey great video! Ill definitely be using scaffolding a lot more from now on haha. Do you think you could do a tutorial on display cases? I can't seem to put anything in them ( I'm talking about the actual display cases not weapon/ armor racks) maybe it's just bugged for me or maybe I'm just doing it wrong lol.
Davey can you do an updated glitch video? Im so behind on the glitches people find. I only know the rug glitch :(
Six year late to this party, but thank you for this. It was incredibly informative! :)
This right here. I never got into settlements in my 1st playthrough. Found Starfield too boring, and said back to the wasteland I go. Your videos are really helping me get ideas and tips on how to build cool settlements. Thank you for making them!!!
The Mechanist's Lair is intended to be a Player Home, not a settlement.
and a question...does placing with the 3 rugs use the collision of the end rug making it easier to glitch in? I did something similar with scaffolding and junk walls but with the concrete pillar and struggled a bit with placement.
I don't think this has been brought up yet, but were you aware you could combine the rug glitch with the pillar glitch? Set up the rug glitch as normal, but then set a pillar next to the first rug. When you hold select only the first rug will be selected, and it gives you more control over sinking objects.
yeah I've known about that for a while - but have never needed to use it my videos. I might put it in one soon so every knows about it though.
I love you for this!!!
I don't think people know what the Mechanist layer is meant for.
It's all about the workshop's junk cap.
All workshops have a cap that prevents them from holding too much junk (I believe its about 250 pieces).
At this cap your settlers assigned to salvage stations will no longer produce junk.
The player's junk dump also contributes to this cap.
So at the Mechanist's layer the player should use the _contraptions DLC_ to constantly empty their workshop.
The player can also elect to create several robots assigned to scrapping stations to bluster the amount of junk created.
TBH I use the layer as a "Bat Cave" I just show up, dump my junk and move back out.
Also I've been building a sort of wall around Dalton Farm using the scaffolding and other various bits of fence and wall. It's umm, yeah not going as smoothly as yours. I'm too distracted by the mega tower I built there.
You should do one for Sommerville place, I've literally never seen anyone do that yet
Oxborns good but he uses mods
madqueen has a pretty good sommerville
hey Davey, just some advice regarding your Mech Lair complaint...build a factory there to run all your supply lines using robots as your provisioners. Removing robots from all other settlements will improve happiness at them as the robots max happiness is 50 so only the Lair will be low, around 50. Oxhorn has a vid about this idea too but it is a great idea for how to use it and manage supply lines.
scaffolding floors snap to the mesh floors from warehouses and the other way around
sexy new walls Davey!
The place anywhere mod will save you a bit of time Davey .
Can you do a build at Abernathy farm? I've settled there and I need more ideas on what to build there.
Davey, while I am on PC and have the advantage of Place Anywhere, I still get a lot out of your build videos. Thank you for making them.
Can anyone confirm that as of the patch released today the workshop in Starlight Drive-in is glitched. I can only enter and use build mode when in or right next the workshop shack.
I tried experimenting with the Garage Door by using a trip wire to close it once triggered. But I couldn't get a way to have it open itself again afterwards. After an attack and whatnot. Any ideas Davey?
to get those small bits on the top of the green house allow the floor bit to snap as you were and then the out side one will snap I think, if it works the way my vid showed with lower lvls :-)
I just love listening to this guy he is hilarious 😂
how are you attaching 2 things together to move them together?
The mechanists lair is good for factories and automated farms (can you grow there? Idk)
I just thought of this, but for like a weapons case, get a weapon wall stand and wall glitch in one of the display cases, for you know like a cool weapons one like in vault 111
This is probably a REALLY obvious question, but how do you move objects without looking around (like how he moved the scaffolding into the ground at 7:04)??
Hold X/A and move the left stick around to move it horizontally, and hold X/A and LB/L1 to move it vertically.
+Daniel Knight Thank you!!
+CastielWinchester No problem 👍🏻
+Daniel Knight Any idea how to do it on PC?
How does he scroll through the build menu while aiming at an object he's placed? Everytime I try to scroll through the build menu and press X, if I'm looking at something, it'll select that instead. I have to look away from everything to go through the build menu.
Press up on the d pad
Small little note: pitching machines launch grenades
This might be a stupid question but how do you sink down objects?
how do you grab whole buildings on ps4?
Y'know what'd be a cool system to integrate, that would make no sense? Sharing resources (Junk) across saves (Or at least being given the option to), and when you delete a character, all the resources (Junk) they had would be sent to the save that hasn't been deleted. I've deleted roughly 4-5 characters recently, and I nearly cried at the amount of resources (Junk) I had to delete.
Their is actually an easier way to put the junk fences in the ground. First you put the rugs under the fence and then at the end of the rug line put a concrete pillar down and hold down x on the pillar it should go in the ground an clip through objects. If you can't figure out what I'm saying I made a video on how to do it
I make watch towers out of one of the 2x2 high scaffolding pieces with a short 1x1 or a 2x1 piece with the short squares going up. If I want to make it into a more aggressive watch tower, I put 2 2x1 tall pieces along side the 2x2 piece and then put the turrets on top of those. I might make a video of setting one up and post it to my channel :D Putting the junk fences in like how you have them would make them look awesome :D
Where would Davey be w/o the rug glitch?
ChaseG59 mods oh wait hes on console
Mechanist lair is really good for making a bunch of robots and making them provisioners. I never go back there because it's a clusterf**k of robots now and you can't build really much there. Also robots bring down happiness so it makes sense for that to be there home and to use them in this manner
Sorry I know this is a bad time but
A couple of days ago I updated my mods played for a couple of hours came back a couple days ago my gmae is stuck on a main menu loaqding screen. I've tried everything verifying my game cache, putting it to window mode, loaading different save, starting a new game and also when I click mods it also gets stuck on the another loading screen but that one says "Wait for gate data to load"
Does anyone know how to fix this ? I've been trying for 5 days now.
Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4690 CPU @ 3.50GHz
RAM : 16.0 GB
64 bit OS
Graphics Card : Gigabyte G1
I cant get the rug glitch to work
Snapable junk fences mod ftw I probably would have gone insane without it
Fuck. Now I need to go and do this for my Starlight Drive-In settlement. Oh, well, I was planning on redoing it anyway.
What do you use to record, Davey?
Davey, while building do you ignore the "Help defend Settlement X" message?
Seems I cannot complete a build session without one of those.
Of course the other interruption are attacks at the settlement you're at.
Love your work, thanks.
Be well,
If this helps- assign more settlers to a resource. That should decrease the probability for an attack to make your settlers do stuff. If you also place down lots of turrets to get high defense it should also decrease your chances. Hope that helps
Yes, defense higher than 100/150 is a good rule of thumb. And the probability of an attack becomes higher if a lot of food and water is stored in your workbench.
Deffo steal this!
Can you show the glitches on console (xboxone) please ?
Am curious why you're still using the random, unpredictable rugs to place, align, and sink junk fences rather than the concrete pillar or a foundation. Is it just habit?
+SarDeliac because the select all glitch does not allow you to place player made objects inside/clipping partly inside each other.
TIL. Thanks :)
I attach the pillar to the rug glitch to sink certain things.
+norespawns You can do both, fence on rug, pillar next to rug and select all on pillar. Then you can merge through other build items and also sink down. Best of both worlds! I accidentally discovered this while (re)doing my Sanctuary walls yesterday.
I love your videos, they're always great even if I already know how to do what you're explaining. Lots of inspiration in there. Great, great stuff.
Side note, "...the holding X pillar glitch..." is simply "group-select using a foundation or concrete". It's not a glitch, it's a standard tool (group select) explained in the in-game tutorials. The only difference is that foundations and concrete sink, while other objects do not. Pedantic? I hope not, just trying to normalize our construction vocabulary. :)
Cheers!
I see the mechanists lair as a place to store your automatrons.
legit... i'm going to turn it into a robotics factory again, since i have robots fucking everywhere. i love using them for supply lines, they're all tanked to fuck, with unique names (i made johnny 5)
+Dade Frost an actual factory with conveyer belts and shit. If it will let you build that there.
For that factory get the rust devil robot helmets like the sentry one and put them on the convener belts and than you just have robot heads going around your base. Thats what i'm gonna do XD
+Jordan Austin it will, mad queen did a build with conveyors and shit there. it was cool.
+Samuel Harris thats a great idea, maybe eyebot and assaultron helms as well.. cheers
The good thing is I don't need to do this as I have a mod that adds flooring to junk fences for cat walks so I thank god don't need to do much to build walls as I love settlement building but I still do these glitches myself
My rug glitch won't work. Does it have anything to do with mods? Please help.
It still works. Try re adjusting the rug, and sometimes the glitch won't work if the object can snap (like on walls). If you are trying to glitch in walls, hold the select button. Hope that helps
Oh OK I have the snap able junk fences mod....ima stupid individual. Thanks
cool video
Is this a reupload?
to make it more scrappy
Whats wrong with the Far Harbour settlements? I don't have the dlc
There is a constant thick fog around so the settlements look shit but when console mods come out he will install 1 to remove fog
+Noble Numrods thanks
instead of storing your concrete pillar all the time why not just move it somewhere
And there's a way that thing you were trying to do with the front of the greenhouse can work you just uh, well, just you'll figure it out. It's too much to explain in a youtube comment, I have editing to do.
Half-wall pieces above those triangles?
Is the snapable junk fences mod available on Xbox?
Yes
I have it right now
Davey, you should build a hotel.
+Ricky Westley Wow, that's pretty fuckin good.
Fergus Rhodes Cheers
So are you not even going to finish long fellows cabin
I clearly said in the video I was going to - as the weather is fine there. I'm just not going to do Echo Lake or the Visitors Centre.
+norespawns you deserve 100000 thousand subs your such a good RUclipsr
idk if you already know this or if you care since you said you werent going to use it but consoles cant have a place anywhere or place in red mod. also you should be careful with mods an shit, i downloaded a whole bunch for unlimited building, named settlers, and more building materials and items and it stopped the rug glitch from working(the you showed us to use to patch up the sanctuary houses). idk if anyone else had the problem or if it messed up the pillar glitch aka bae but yeah
also it made how close i could place things together a lot pickier
I have a question. Can I wear clothes and armour? Like, can I wear a institute lab coat and have armour at same time!
Nope
Only certain clothes items will go under armour, such as the vault suit, raiders leathers, harness, road leathers, long johns, and brotherhood of steel uniforms (you get enough of all these from killing raiders & scavenging off dead to be able redress your settlers & put armour on them too if you're so inclined) I can't remember if the jeans & undershirt allows it too. Then some will allow you to wear leg armour but not upper body too, at least I found that with Zeke's Atom Cat outfit. Occasionally I will come across someone where I put armour on them and their clothes don't disappear, so I now put the armour on first before changing their clothes. It's annoying because my character can scrap a broken down house and build a clothing factory, but he can't figure out a way to strap armour on over a t-shirt? what the hell? Sure, that's realistic. I can understand it with some of the really bulky clothes but still.
That said, I seem to recall there is a mod that allows you to do it, but IDK if it only works with your character or the settlers as well. I've no idea what it's called or if it's on Xbox too. Oh, also, keep in mind that you can upgrade your vault suit in the armour workbench to add extra protections to it (I'm pretty sure it's the most protective clothing item in the game (I don't include like the spiked armour because it would make sense you wouldn't be able to wear extra armour with that), even if it looks kinda daft running around in bright blue lol, so I used console commands to spawn a bunch in and put all my provisioners in 111 suits, so I can easily spot them wandering around lol), but I can't remember what level you need in that perk for doing it fully as I maxed mine out quite some time ago.
That was a long answer to what was a fairly simple question. lol.
*TL;DR* - you can only wear armour with certain items but occasionally it seems to glitch and allow combinations it doesn't usually, also there's a mod but I don't know what it's called as I've not used it..
I use the Mechanists Lair as my supply line base and use bots as my supply lines from there
What mods are you using if I may ask
I'm pretty sure he doesn't use any mods
Slender J oh ok. Thanks for replying
He plays on ps4 I'm pretty sure, so he doesn't use any
dan watts no prob Bob but you can bet your bottom dollar he's going to as soon as they release
Lol right. I have mods for pc. Just can't wait for ps4. I'm level 86 on ps4 lol
Davey when tod finally doesn't hate us ps4 users and gives us mode we wont need the rug glitch as we can use the mod interchange where it lets us place thing inside other things example is like you can place a junk fence inside another junk fence. love the vids and hate Todd Howard
Dood thts really kool
Id build the walls but damn they take forever
i'vr been doing a rug and a pillar....
Are you using Mods or DLC's?
MacBox CZ No mods but the Contraptions Workshop DLC
SWAGDOLF SHITLER Thanks
PS Funny name
MacBox CZ No problem and thanks haha
You always seem to be having a lot of trouble with that pain in your knob. I might know someone who can take care of that for you. #Potemacare
your the best
when console mods come out for ps4 will you do modded building tutorials?
Cant wait till mods, first thing I'm getting is cheat menu, just for unlimited resources, nothing worst than running out of wood or steel half way through a build
They should just give some degree on console commands to console players. They're so fucking handy, especially when the game glitches out (which it always does). "tgm" activates god mode and amoung other things you get infinite crafting resources.
There's a glitch that is great for easy duplication of resources
A pain in the knob? LOL
Oh dear, now I really feel like I make awful settlements. I never really detail mine!
