dannytheman1313 in real life, Dr Treves had police escort John when he (John) got off at the train station so this very thing wouldn't happen.
Films take liberties with scenes all the time still doesn't take away the emotional aspect and probably does speak about how he must have felt from time to time, despite the deformities he was still a man.

Maybe the best performance ever and they didn't even give him the oscar.
I feel the deepest sorrow for that man. wasn't something he could control. it just happened. its said at least 90% of the population of the world would have a medical condition at some point in life. I would bet my life no one would dream of something as HORRIBLE as the brilliant man by the name of Joseph Merrick did. what I find really sad is that he couldn't smile. the saddest part was the way he passed away.he wanted to be normal. he had to sleep with his head on his knees to relive some of the weight from his neck. one night he just wanted to sleep like everyone around him. that's what he did. the weight from his head cut the flow of oxygen to his lungs and he quickly died soon after. people stop criticising based on what you see judge by what's on the inside
and the weight of his head crushed his spinal cord

I know it's a bad moment since he just died and I'll try my best not to be too negative, but he was up against De Niro in Raging Bull. Granted, both are amazing performances, but you can't go wrong with De Niro.
Anyway, RIP.
Just bad luck. DeNiro's magnum opus comes out the same year...no one was beating him in Raging Bull. I'd argue that Hurt would've won every other year except the 1981 AA's.
Should have absolutely won that year. De Niro was spectacular in Raging Bull(even though the movie is intolerably overhyped) but Hurt was on an another level honestly.

No one is saying that De Niro gave a bad performance, it's a great performance but I don't find it as good as Hurt's magical portrayal in this, it's as simple as that!!

the irony of you calling people demons... they are not demons nor animals, they are human beings...duhh. the movie makes it very clear that the key to people's reaction to John is _education_. the ones who were privileged enough to understand and care for his condition reacted with kindness, anyone who didn't get the memo reacts with shock and disgust. it's the tragedy of the situation. this is called the human condition. the people in the train station behaved the way they did, because they too are trying to "fit in". just like John. in a way we're all the elephant man.

What always puts me to shame when I watch this movie is despite the incredibly cruel way he was treated he still had the inner strength and grace to forgive. Could you even imagine what this world would be like if we ALL treated each other with that kind of compassion? He truly understood REAL LOVE.

As a child I remember feeling so much anger watching this scene. Now - it makes me sad. Sad not for John Merrick - he needed no sympathy- sadness for us as a species that we would do this to another one of us.
Sad that at times, I still judge people based on what they look like or what they type or say without ever trying to know them or understand them. That at times I've hated those who hated me in return and feel justified about it. And sad that as "evolved" as we think we are... we are not that far removed from this now as we were then.
We MUST improve as individuals if we are to ever evolve into anything better than we are as a whole.

Jake Rutigliano - I was watching a documentary recently on John Merrick. This scene is an accurate recreation of this incident and the events.
However, in a forensic study of his physical movement if he were alive today and when he was alive, he wouldn’t have been able to walk as fast in the movie as it’s depicted. He would’ve walked much, much slower and not as accurately.
Johns left leg was almost useless, his right leg which was deformed was his dominant leg and his left leg was more like a crutch because it couldn’t keep up with the deformities of his body which were all on his right side. So this made mobility very difficult, he could walk, just not very well.
So when this happened, it was probably a lot worse since he couldn’t move very fast. Also, his speech was very impaired, he wouldn’t have been as clear speaking in this scene. He had a plate of bone that pushed down on his tongue and palate which limited the clarity of his speech. Also he was totally deaf in his right ear.
So he would’ve had to have really shouted and worked to get out a clear understandable voice for people to hear. So at times John Hurts performance is very accurate to how Merrick spoke, it’s likely not possible that he was able to speak this clearly though.
I don’t cry or even feel sad very often, but this scene and just Merrick’s life story as a whole never fail to make me sob, the poor man just wanted a normal life. I hope he’s in a better place now
I first saw this film when I was 15 years old , it changed my life literally, I’m 45 now and work with handicapped people At school I drew a portrait of Joseph merrick , that portrait is still on my wall, I put a candle underneath it and light it one day a year 11th April

When Treves hugged him..thats when he really showed Merrick was no longer someone he could study but a friend that he admired and loved
If you read his poem about how he's sorry that he is deformed and if he could make himself normal he would and would not disappoint you , It would bring a tear in your eye I was crying so much when I read that

I want to build a time machine just so I can go back and hug that man. one of the finest human beings there ever was. my sister was born with a deformity too, so I empathize with that struggle, even if it's not my own. the body is merely a vessel. what matters is the soul that resides in it. my sister and Mr. Merrick have proven that to me, time and time again. may God rest his beautiful soul.

I'm a grown man, but whenever I see this scene it makes me cry like a baby.
I once showed this scene to a class of children in a monster writing workshop. At the end of the clip, I asked when the scene got scary for them and they said when John was cornered by all those people. They understood my lesson that day, in that sometime we are the monsters, and the victims can be the ones who can't help their existence and wish to just live as best they can.
This movie gets me every time. I blub like a baby! This scene is powerful, but I love two other scenes, that are more understated. When Treves first sees the elephant man (a view we don't share) the camera focuses entirely on Anthony Hopkins' face. A look of incomprehension and deep empathy, yet he remains impassive, that is until tears well up in his eyes and trickle down his cheeks. Great acting. Then the afternoon tea scene in Treves' home. I well up even before that scene starts, merely in anticipation. A wonderful, wonderful film.
I felt this movie deserved more accolades than it got

I actually didn't cry but I feel very very sad about this scene. I really want to hug him. He is more beautiful on the inside than most people. I'm terrified about this. It hurts in my heart to see this.

@Crimson King First of all, that's not why he died. Second of all - yes, I wouldn't mind kissing someone who looked different or deformed (I'm not sure what you mean by "monster"). If someone has a great personality and manner of being then that already makes them attractive regardless of their appearance. And to be honest the Elephant Man's deformation doesn't repulse me that much at all. And character-wise, he seemed like a better human being than most "normal"-looking men these days.

Jeremy, The Innovator i strongly agree. I saw the film about two years ago (I also watched it before then) and this scene gets to me everytime. However said it is I just can't stop watching it because of John Hurt's powerful performance. In other words I just love to torture myself.

Rest in peace Joseph Merrick. The way this man passed away is the saddest thing possible. Joseph Merrick died in his sleep when trying to sleep like everyone else in the world. He needed to sleep in a sitting position with his legs bent and his head over them to support the extra weight in his head. So one night he was going to try to sleep like everyone else, but as he layed down, one of the central veins in his neck snapped from the weight of his head which caused him to pass away.

I am 51 years old and have seen a hell of a lot of movies but this scene is by far my favourite scene of ANY movie I have seen so far!!! He finally stands up for his personal dignity and doesn't care what anybody thinks anymore. I saw this when I was only 14 year old. Alone. On TV. This was before the internet was a thing. I didn't know this was one of the stand-out iconic scenes of this film. Still... I remember crying for him, and feeling the power of this scene. Two things happened that day. I gained a new appreciation for my fellow human beans, and I fell in love with cinema.

That scene when he visits the doctor's place and when he shows the picture of his mother to the doctor's wife, I could see in his eyes how proud he was when she says that his mom looks so beautiful. The saddest part is that we can still understand this today, many things have not changed and it is extraordinary how this film still speaks to such volumes even now. This is the most beautiful film to ever be made.
This movie played on HBO when I was 7 years old. I really believe it taught me about compassion and kindness. I cried when I watched it then and I still tear-up when I watch these scenes. and I’m 51 now. The power of great filmmaking. ❤️

This film, well filmed, brilliantly acted and deeply sad. Lucky are those who are ''normal'' looking- to be stared at, gawked at, must be soul destroying for anyone who has the misfortune to be born with such a condition. When one sees the vanity of people who fret over having ''too small boobs'' or ''a spot'' it does put things into perspective. Society judges far too much on appearance..and probably always will.

I saw this when it first came out and it was hypnotic... everything about it... the way it was shot, the dream sequences... The one thing that will always stick out in my memory is when all of the side show acts escaped. They all carried lanterns and walked through the woods. I tell myself that such horrible things could never happen... but they did. Lynch is a genius for bringing this stuff to film. He shows you stuff you would never want to see. One of the few directors that will actually show you unnerving images based on reality.

This guys life and story is so fucking sad.
This scene breaks my heart every single time, heck this whole movie does. My heart aches for Joseph Merrick, I honestly cannot imagine anyone having to live a life filled with such mockery and hatred :( This is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen and I'd recommend it to anyone, just be prepared for tears :( The human soul is a truly remarkable thing.

John Merrick has to be the kindest and most compassionate character I have ever seen been portrayed in a movie. I love him so much. People judged him too quickly. This really is a perfect example of “don’t judge a book by its cover” apparently even the actor who played him couldn’t even completely play the amazing person he was in real life.

I saw this scene on tv when i was like 5. I didn't understand a word of english and i couldn't read so i had no idea what was going on. The intense music, the black & white picture, the intensity of the scene, his limping and the reveal of his face scared me to the point where i bursted out crying of fear. I had never seen a face like that and the way it was presented to me was like taken from a nightmare. Many years later when i understood english and watched the movie in it's entirety, it almost had me in tears for a completly different reason.

I find it still funny after all these years that a film by David Lynch is one that will make me cry every single time. There are few films that can do that for me and I say that with no ounce of pride. Crying can be incredible cathartic.
