There was a movie about him. He wanted to be accepted into society his entire life and when people got to actually know him, he turned out to be one of the most polite people theyve ever met. In the end of the movie when he had finally made friends and was even a guest of honor at the local theater where he watched his first opera, he decided to end his life that night because he had finally felt complete. The movie shows that he reunited with his dead mother who died giving birth to him. I cried like a baby
The cast that the doctors made of Merrick's body after he died. Because parts of the cast look so rough, I used to think that the doctors didn't do a good job molding the cast. But then I see the parts of the cast which are smooth; like part of Merrick's face and his left hand which were unaffected; and I realize that Merrick indeed had very rough and lumpy skin.
Hard to imagine a time where human beings were more terrible to each other back then they are today. Happy he at least experienced kindness and acceptance during the final years of his life.
So he probably woke up as soon as he fell back and died terrified. The pain was unbearable; soon he'd be paralyzed, and he'd just be lying there, silently screaming, and dying a scared man in a dark, dark, world. . . . "He died a peaceful death" indeed.
May this man rest easy in heaven, i feel an overwhelming anger for when he was alive and sadness for how we take for granted even just being in public and not being made a mockery
See the life and sadness in that photo? There's a normal person behind those eyes, a heart, a soul. Saving grace is.......we ALL remember him. He has taught the world more about compassion then he could even dream of. He was and still is a shining example of .........life.
He didn’t suffer extremely in his death, it was too quick. I imagine that what happened to him was similar to what happened to criminals who received a hanging. The vertebrae is irreparably damaged. It lasted seconds at most. No human neck was designed to hold such weight as was his human head. In fact, he probably would have died sooner if he had not gone into surgery some 7 years before (in 1883) to have part of the extra tissues around his face removed. It was during his life, however, that he suffered extremely. And yet, he was a sweet gentleman who spoke optimistically despite the fact that his existence must have been a constant battle with depression and despair.
Yeah, you're right. In fact, the only photo that I can remember now is that one with him in a suit, I don't see any other photos with him looking to the left. But, the two etchings of him when he was 21 was him looking to the left I think.
Be honest, most of the people saying they would love to meet the guy and such would probably have another response if they lived within the era he was in (their knowledge of his case and personality due to the written history was the only reason they wanted to meet him). The plaster casts of Joseph's head, foot and arm were taken after death. The skeleton kept in the medical college with them is real. However, there is an accurate replica of Joseph's skeleton at the Royal London Hosp Museum which the general public can view, linked to the Discovery channel docu''Meet the Elephant Man.''
Just watched this movie and it had me in tears the way he was treated. It saddens me that people who are already in pain and struggling to have a normal life get picked on and abused too 😢😭
I believe he was just used to it - sadly. Indeed, he had no choice. When Tom Norman saw him sleeping in an upright position for the first time he was absolutely shocked. Joseph said to him( in his usual dark humour) that if he tried to sleep any other way it would risk him ''waking with a broken neck''. Just like all his life, Joseph was driven by a determination to continue, whatever happened, whatever fate threw at him. I daresay, he was equally determined in the way he knew he must sleep.
Well, like someone else already commented before it could've been possible that he woke up, didn't know what was going on and why he couldn't move and was freaking the fuck out. You're welcome.
Something sad is his one normal hand he had, he used it a lot and loved it he says it was the only part of his body he liked, poor man, my god bless him, I know he’s dead but still.... D:
@LoveAddictREmix You should have made it clear than it was his stepmother who treated him so cruelly. His mother loved him very much, and died when he was eleven. It was a terrible blow for him, he never recovered from it, she had been an angel for him.

Yes, I agree with everything you say...And also, I cant bear to think that Joseph knew what was going to happen to him after death - I dont know how he coped with that, really. He was a nice man, intelligent. It really causes me distress to think about it on his behalf. To me, what they did to his poor body was brutal and cruel. When I read about it I couldnt stop crying the first time. It's definately time he was laid to rest. Enough is enough.
Yes, he did. He was found lying across his bed - the time of death being between 1.30 and 3pm. He was actually so weak from his condition by that time, it was not unusual for Joseph to be still sitting/ in bed into the afternoon.
Hopefully, he didn't commit suicide. I can understand if he just wanted to be able to lean backwards and sleep like normal people. May it have been an accident.
larry lovehandle I don't know and neither do you. The circumstances of how he was discovered don't quite match up with suicide. It was the weight of his head which caused it. Joseph was alone when he died. He was given his lunch on a tray on the table at about 1.30 in the afternoon, and left to eat it by himself. He was still in bed at that time, which was not unusual. My personal opinion is, he may have tried to get off the bed to eat, and he lost his balance while trying to do so, the weight of his head pulling him backwards. His head was so heavy by that time, he actually had to sometimes support it.
0:51 I just closed my eyes and listened, trying to imagine what he must have suffered through the whole of his short life. I hope he's at peace. He should be respectfully buried, though.
Joseph was such a beautiful soul maybe an earth angel angels put on earth and are made look different to test humans see how they act to them so he might have been an earth angel but he was a beautiful soul a kind warm gentle and polite well mannered person and he was treated like dirt so not fair I’d have been his friend and after a bit in his company wouldn’t even notice his deformities just sit their take tea and cakes and chat and make him happy hope he’s at peace now RIP Mr Merrick
Joseph did not ''ask'', he assumed the enevitable - he imagined himself preserved in a huge glass jar. There are no documents to show he donated his remains to the Hospital - while it may be it was ''a gentleman's agreement'' between himself and Treves -he was also probably grateful for everything the Hospital had done for him. It must have been the most terrible burden he had to bear in his mind, that there would be no rest for him, even in death, from being looked at.
Kinda sad how for a sec u see the bones as an object but then u think about it and u realize that was a real human being before and u can’t communicate or tell him anything cause he’s dead
His muscles wasn't developed enough to hold the weight of his skull in that position. So when you he moved in that way, he had no way to lift his head up if you atrophied your neck muscles by not being able to use them.
He deserves to Rest In Peace, he wanted to be with his mother and not to be looking at. He hated to be stared at, and yet he his body is being looked at for students to study. What happened to humanity
It was not an accident. The other pillows were found neatly arranged. He knew that Mr.Treves could not cure him and that his disease was progressive. In the south, we have a saying -"A lady knows when to leave". Mr. Merrick was a gentleman and apparently he knew when his time had come.
Actually it was a group effort, determining his probable cause of death; Rose Drew emailed the producer, director AND the US Dr that she had had noted all photos and sketches showed Merrick looking to the side, but that the death mask showed him facing forward. Sadly Alex declined to mention that, 5 days later, when he filmed his office segment. Importantly the show focuses on Brian and his own, very real struggle with Proteus.
He was absolutely alone when he died.A nurse who saw him before saw he had not touched his lunch,&he was still sitting in bed,as was usual by that time, even as it was now afternoon, because of the advancement of his condition. It seems to me that he fell back for whatever reason,& that was all it was.Perhaps in trying to get off the bed to eat his lunch - we'll never know. But it really does seem it was a tragic accident - while perhaps a merciful one, because of his really bad health at that time.
Dr. Veccaro mentions that in all of his pictures he's looking to his left, but the photo shown just before then shows him looking straight ahead, doesn't it?

I saw the name and was interested because I watched Ripper Street and he is depicted in the show. I felt bad for him but he was portrayed as such a nice man.
I watched this video years ago and just came back to it after my hand slipped on the blankets as I was getting in to bed. Slightly pulled a muscle in my neck and thought ... Damn... maybe that's all it took.
Joesph merrick had a rare condition called Proteus syndrome which is caused by a mutation in the gene of AKT1 today the odds of someone having Proteus syndrome is 1/1,000,000 and out of all diagnosed cases 25% die before 22 and the oldest person with Proteus syndrome died at 61 R.I.P Joseph Carey Merrick 5th August 1862 -1890 11th April 1890
...accepted it, where it is now displayed proudly on the wall of the Library. The College stands on the site of the Leicester Workhouse, where Joseph was for 4 years. I'm just pointing out the sensitivity of the issue, sad as it is.There would be a responsibility on taking caring care of wherever Joseph was laid to rest .
Though his skeleton is still in a Medical institution (He's not a tourist attraction thankfully, Only medical professionals/students are allowed to visit, and you need a very good reason) His soft tissue was buried in a Graveyard in London, Interestingly nearby where Jack the Ripper's victims were buried. They've put up a small plaque for him.
Elephantitis is a condition in which certain parts of the body swell to almost quadruple their normal size. This condition can also cause severe deformities. I've seen this condition three times in a show called Ripley's believe it or not. A young boys foot was Soo massive that he couldn't wear shoes. He had to undergo surgery to shrink it to a more manageable size. He lost a of meat on that foot as well as his toes. Another gentleman had it on his hand. You could barely tell where most of his fingers were. Only finger that could be identified was his massive middle finger which took up a majority of his hand almost absorbing the other fingers his hand grew to the size of a bowling ball. And finally another man had it on his entire arm. It weighed almost twenty pounds and had little to no functionality. He couldn't even open and close his hand or move his arm above his waste.

Investigating his illness to help future victims is more important. We wouldn’t want others to suffer the way he did.
This is so sad,he wanted to experienced sleeping like normal people do and he died at 27 that was a really young age
He just wanted to sleep normally for a night so lay on his back and passed that way bless him so so sad RIP Joseph
Just imagine trying to sleep and all of a sudden you break your neck. RIP
It was not an accident. The other pillows were found neatly arranged. He knew that Mr.Treves could not cure him and that his disease was progressive. In the south, we have a saying -"A lady knows when to leave". Mr. Merrick was a gentleman and apparently he knew when his time had come.
Jesus... Its at the same time sad for this poor soul but also fascinating / terrifying because of what the human body can do
same thing that makes you can also destroy you

7 years ago when i was 8 his face spook me,but now i feel bad for him...
Very Sweet man im so happy he is with the Lord and Jesus now let's let this Sweet man RIP

He died trying to be normal; he died trying to be someone else because he couldn't face who he really was.
Gosh poor guy. I only hopefully pray he is doing better in the other realm.
I saw the name and was interested because I watched Ripper Street and he is depicted in the show. I felt bad for him but he was portrayed as such a nice man.
This is so incredibly sad
I watched this video years ago and just came back to it after my hand slipped on the blankets as I was getting in to bed. Slightly pulled a muscle in my neck and thought ... Damn... maybe that's all it took.
This is so sad 😭😭😭😭😭 he suffered for 27 yrs well now he is at rest
Joesph merrick had a rare condition called Proteus syndrome which is caused by a mutation in the gene of AKT1 today the odds of someone having Proteus syndrome is 1/1,000,000 and out of all diagnosed cases 25% die before 22 and the oldest person with Proteus syndrome died at 61 R.I.P Joseph Carey Merrick 5th August 1862 -1890 11th April 1890
i dont know why, but now im so paranoid going to sleep, my skeleton is normal but i still think that i will lay down wrong and hurt myself
1:29 face on back of head facing right hmmm
I thought the same thing
Insert Harry Potter reference after 5 years of nothing.
Poor man..... at least he died peacefully despite dying alone
what a hard life. i bet it was nice to rest... even if it wasn't for long.
It’s just a sad story about a sad, kind man.
...accepted it, where it is now displayed proudly on the wall of the Library.
I searched his name up cuz i learned about him in school and it was more detailed and so sad 😞
If you look at the picture of him he didn't look that bad on his left side it's sad he could've lived such a good life
Victorian age sure is interersting.
I read about him from a book. It was very sad.
