- Watch the first 10 minutes of The Elephant Man - David Lynch's moving masterpiece about the incredible story of John Merrick.
A stunning new 4K restoration of THE ELEPHANT MAN, with both picture and sound overseen by revered director David Lynch, this release is the perfect celebration of the films 40th anniversary. Starring Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt, THE ELEPHANT MAN is an extraordinary and intensely moving true story of bravery and humanity. John Merrick (John Hurt) is The Elephant Man, forced into circus sideshows and spurned by society because of the disfiguring disabilities he was born with. Rescued by a well meaning surgeon (Anthony Hopkins), he tries to escape a life of prejudice and cruelty as he tries to fit into a world ruled by Victorian sensibilities. Beautifully shot in black and white by the incomparable Freddie Francis, THE ELEPHANT MAN is an unforgettable story of human dignity and survival.

What I love about this film is at first you are bothered by his appearance, but then as you realize how kind and likable a character he is is, by the end you don’t even notice his condition
Exactly
@@tommy-fraser4061 The actor playing the character trying too close down the freak show is Frederick Treves a relative of the real Dr. Frederick Treves
Love nonsense
Be warned. There are beautiful moments of kindness in this masterpiece, tempered by cruelty that will bring you to tears. Adagio for Strings suits this perfectly.
The cruelty is all fictional, it's a shame really, makes the film itself into a kind of freakshow (the freaks being Mr Bytes, the hospital porter, and the working-class mob).
I saw this movie when I was 11 back in 1980. Beautiful. And robbed at the Oscars.
What? I just looked up the Oscars 1981. OMG, they've always made terrible decisions. The following movies were nominated as best film:
The Elephant Man
Coal Miner's Daughter
Tess
Raging Bull
Ordinary People
4 timeless movies and an outdated one no one talks about anymore. Guess which movie won? Tess is sadly underrated but still timeless.
Lisa Jackson Thank goodness it lead to the Best Makeup category.
Eily Bergin I like Ordinary People, but it’s just good, not *BEST PICTURE*
Totally robbed ar the oscars
Who was robbed?
A David Lynch movie starring Anthony Hopkins. Sounds like a must-see.
A Powerful Film that made Joseph Merrick into a Legend.
It is superb
19th century London is the real horror here, and the real freaks are lining its streets. Brilliant visual storytelling from Lynch, as usual.
The cruelty in the film is all fictional, he was treated well wherever he went.
The Elephant man is always a Legend.
@@jrb4935 Not so. Joseph Merrick endured a great deal of physical abuse, social approbation, and other cruelty for his physical condition, especially before he came into the care of Dr. Treeves. Though he had nothing untoward to say of those who put him "on show," the mere act of publicly displaying Merrick as a human curiosity was exploitative and degrading to his human dignity. Also, nearly all people who first came into contact with Merrick expressed shock and (sometimes) outright revulsion at his condition. How would you feel if you always had to endure the gawking, staring, and (worst still) cruel insults of people every time you displayed yourself in public?
He saw an advert in a newspaper and applied for the job. @@Ryan-on5on
I remember first seeing this at about 8-9 years of age. It never left me, it still haunts me. Hopkins is so subtle and still, Hurt breaks your heart and Freddie Jones is terrifying. The combination of Lynch’s surreal and dreamlike visuals and Freddie Francis’s beautiful cinematography are imprinted on my brain forever. It’s a film I have to prepare myself to watch, emotionally it takes it’s toll but it is without doubt a masterpiece.
It was produced by Mel Brooks, it would have never got the cast only for Brooks. He gave Lynch great support too.
Hi Paul. You beautifully summed-up this film for me, too! A true masterpiece, on every level. 🙏🏻
This made the Real Elephant man into a Legend. Based on a true story.
One of the best films ever made.
Brilliant.Perfect. Cried so much throughout. RIP John Hurt. ❤️
Was he a Christian?
I don't know.
Yes
I was too young when I first saw this movie
I screamed and cried on how he was treated
In real life he wasn't treated badly.
The Freak show was really Cruel.
For anybody confused by the opening, the story goes that when Merrick's mother was pregnant she was frightened by an elephant, and that's why he looked that way.
What a coincidence since this film's opening actually makes those elephants look kinda scary
Was she in India?
Merricks mother was struck down by an elephant that had gone on the loose from a circus in Leicester. However it had nothing to do with his condition or deformities. This was just the showman’s patter to intrigue his paying audience.
What Happened to the Mother after Merrick was Born?
"Maternal impression" was the belief that birth defects were caused by some trauma or illness to pregnant women. It was partly true (I knew a guy with fetal alcohol syndrome) and partly superstition cooked up to explain the unknown.
Betty, his mother died and his father remarried. As Joseph's deformities got worse during his teen years, he left home and worked odd jobs, then joined the carnival.
David Lynch is a genius.
TRULY 💯🎬🍿
Beginning is nuts.
Absolutely
Masterpiece! Beautiful restoration in 4K.
Highly Clear.
The opening *song* is amazing: cheerful carnival music with an undercurrent of menace, like it's played by the pied piper or some insane person.
For those who think the Oscars are robbed only recently, keep in mind that this beautiful movie got nominated for 8 categories, but ended up winning none.
that is pure Lynch right there
My parents took to me to this in the theater.
Nothing was ever the same.
quand je pense qu'on fait subir ca a de pauvres animaux qui n'ont pas la parole, cle me brise le coeur
I REALLY LIKE THE POEM JOSEPH MERRICK WROTE AT THE END OF HIS LETTERS BY ISAAC WATTS. ITS SO RELATABLE TO JOSEPH. HE SEEMED LIKE A SWEET PERSON
. TOO BAD PEOPLE CANT SEE BEYOND THE OUTSIDE. HE WASNT AN ANIMAL.
You're capital letters don't scare us primate
In real life he was treated well. The cruelty in the film is fictional.
John Hurt. ❤❤❤
Kissey Kissey fish Kissey
And the Voice of the Evil Sailor John in Thomas and Friends Sodor's Legend of the lost treasure (2015)
MASTERPIECE 🎥🍿 Elephant 🐘 Man
Truly Inspiring.
I've already pre-ordered this! This was the one movie I've been waiting for on bluray.
Just curious by the medical scene at 6:51. They're removing shrapnel from this worker caused by I think a sort of boiler explosion, but what was the hot iron used for? Was this a sort of medical thing they used to seal bleeding areas or what not?
Holy ****! It looks absolutely incredible!!
Holy shit stinks to
One of Karl Pilkington’s favourite films with Kes. Excellent choices Karl.
“Think of that, the one thing you WOULD want like an elephant and he gets the head”
His jumpers would get wrecked. But he didn't have to worry about his hair
Good movie 🍿
Inspiring by the True story.
Excellent way by Studio Canal to promote the release. I would love to see this become a more standard way to spark interest. To get a first impression, I would much rather see the first few minutes of a film, even if it were only 5, instead of a trailer. (I realise this particular instance is to showcase the quality of restoration of a known film, but still.)
It is a bit of a shame that the original Paramount logo preceding the film was excised. I am very fond of those logos and I believe they add a great deal to a sense of time for the original release when kept intact. Also, I am wondering whether there ever was a line in the opening credits saying "Paramount Pictures presents". The "A Mel Brooks film" with music fade-in seems somewhat sudden. I wish publishers would add information on those little things when making new editions.
1:01 I had no idea Stuart Craig was the production designer for this film
He's done ya again Steve, play a record!
I don't get 3:32-3:42? The smoke/dust? The baby crying? Could somebody please explain to me what that scene is all about!
The Deformed Baby is Born, The Mother died afterwards since She was Attacked by a Wild Elephant.
I was afraid of everything that is strange. Then I became what is strange.
Вот это охуэнно.
Всю киноклассику необходимо реставрировать в 4к.
3:06 You had all of them on your side, didn't you? Didn't you?
Impressive.
How many people watched the opening scene and went, "What is this shit?????"
Will you all be distributing this to Region 1 at any point?
Sad times
Sur Anthony Hopkins
Brilliant, but not in 4k.
Why italy no?? 😭
If only the blu-ray was region free :(
Criterion picked up it! Its available in the states now.
@@ChadHolzhuter1288 , thank you and yes I own a copy now.
4K UHDs are region free
I have another question. I know he and Anthony Hopkins feuded big time during the filming, but Is David Lynch that petty he couldn't have sent out someone to interview Sir Anthony for this remaster? He's 82 and probably the only actor who is still alive that was in this movie.
Anthony Hopkins sent him a letter a few years ago to apologize.
The Criterion company is putting this out, so you query should read "but is CRITERION so petty THEY couldn't have sent out someone......" David Lynch is a beautiful soul and doesn;t play those sort of games, it's ok if you don't like him but the barely concealed contempt says more about you, not him.
1066
Such a shame!
David Lynch always makes bad choices
pearls before swine.
Merrick wasn't chained up and beaten, he volunteered to travel with the carnival and he was paid for it and treated like any other member of the travelling company.
