The closest I ever got to nailing the Invasion tone was when I plugged into a modded Laney AOR at a rehearsal studio in Culver City around '89. Lynch had been rehearsing there with his new band Lynch Mob and Jake E. Lee rehearsed there with Badlands. I'm not sure, but the Laney I played when I jammed with a band that shall go nameless because their gutiarist, a left-handed EVH wannabe, was always two hours late to rehearsal, and the band let me sit in because I memorized all the guitar parts. Anyhow, the Laney sounded absolutely Killer. In those days if you plugged into an un-modded, out of the box AOR they had this horrible bass decibel boost that was concomitant with the gain boost, so you couldn't dial it out. Anyhow, a lot of guys were getting their AORs modded to correct this, and modded AORs sounded awesome. This amp was no exception. I played an old Holdsworth Charvel with a Duncan Distortion through it and it was one of the best tones I ever had to this day. It totally captured the tone on Invasion. Now, I know that Ratt used mostly Jose modded Plexis on Invasion, and maybe an AOR in the mix, but Lynch definitely use an AOR mixed with a Plexis on Under Lock and Key. This AOR just an incredible tone and clarity. I didn't use any effects at all with it.
Cool story, thanks for sharing. 👍
I am very interested in the lock and key and the invasion tones. Are you saying they didnt use JCM 800s? And which plexi is it? 67?
I could see a Laney producing that tone - especially the older Laney's from that time period. I always wanted one, but went down the boutique modded JCM path - which is a different tone. In fact, I would love to have a vintage Laney now, just to experiment. Great story though.
You did a great job replicating that tone.
Thank man, appreciate the comment.👍
@@ShredHeads Great job on that opening "Lay It Down" riff; your notes are clearly articulated. I think it would sound even closer if you turned up the reverb a bit.
Warren said it was a Fender Super Champ wired to 1 EV 200W speaker in an Orange 4x12. Pickup was likely a Duncan JB.
Warren specifically that was his *lead* guitar sound.
Beau Hill said Warren had bought a bunch of Marshalls while on the Cellar tour. Warren brought them to the Invasion sessions, test driving each one, while in the same room as the cabinet. Because it was so loud, by the end, Warren ears were ringing and couldn't really tell the difference between the amps. Later, Beau plugged Warren into a different Marshall and Warren said that's the one. The funny thing is, this was a Marshall owned by the studio and also the same Marshall used on Cellar. According to Beau, Warren didn't know any better. So they slapped a 57 on it (I assume sm57) and that was the sound. At this point, I have to assume this was his rhythm guitar sound.
Full In Bloom has got the entire interview with Beau Hill.
@@jerk_store I used to work at the studio this was recorded at. They went back for Dance and really really tried to get the same tone as Lay it Down (same room, same board, etc) but just couldn't get it. That said, I never heard that the amp was studio owned.
Martini tone is a maple fretboard guitar into a old Marshall, plexi or 800, Seymour Duncan jb and 25 watt celestion greenbacks in a cab.
A "maple" fret board sound huh? This is debunked here on RUclips, when going through an amp at least. Acoustically, I believe there is a difference, based on my own personal anecdotal data.
maple fretboard? 😂😂 And what kind of tone-nail polish did he wear when recording the riff?
I just subscribed and liked.....can you do the Neal Schon tone and can it be done on VST simulations like Amplitube, Guitar Rig or Neural DSP ??
Thanks
Yes, you can get a great tone now a days with some good plug ins. I don't currently make videos about plug ins because I don't own any. I might make plug in videos in the future if enough people request it. You can still get a good amount of info from my videos that you could apply to the plug in settings and pre sets.
Neal Schon has one of the most complex tones I’ve ever tried to copy…its smooth and warm, not harsh or ice-picky…I can’t get it…great stuff bro!!!!
@@eddiejr540 yep, there are tones out there that are just incredibly hard to replicate.
Get a Marshall 100w Super Lead plexi amp head, Two Marshall 4/12 cabinets loaded with Celestion 25w Green Back speakers, On the head, jump channel 1 (input #2) to channel 2 (input #1)
and your 3/4 of the way there! 🎸
Could you please recommend some good cabinets? Those that you've tried and those that sound good to you. 🤘🎸
The speaker is going to be the biggest difference in any cab. There are of course cabinets that are made better but that shouldn’t affect the sound that much. The celestion V30 & the greenback 25w are the industry standard. If you want classic rock tones there is also the celestion black back. Used cabs often sound better because the speaker is worn in. It will sound a bit warmer and less harsh.
Marshall Plexi/JCM....Cab Greenbacks 25w...Front Amp: EQ mids boost and SD-1
For Solos: Carbon Copy
Don't forget the reverb. That's a big part of the tone of this song. The articles I mentioned do mention the lexicon pcm rack units. It's possible he used one of those units on the record.
@@ShredHeads Lexicon PCM 42 or 41
@@brunosoupin2746 or maybe Lexicon PCM 70
I remember Warren saying he used his little Fender champ practice amp plugged into an orange cab..
If it’s coming from the man himself it’s credible info.
@@ShredHeads ruclips.net/user/shortsB04aBmakmto?si=5xnn0rlouBcmJj8m
He specified that that was his LEAD guitar sound, not the rhythms.
U can play that riff as a double stop and its near enough. Just forget the index finger part and play the bottom 4 strings only. Heaps easier.
Yes, I’ve seen many people play it differently. It can be simplified by playing it as you said.
@@ShredHeads makes it easier to pull off in a guitar shop :)
Did you use the neck or bridge pickip?
Bridge
Awesome tone! Pls share your Fractal Ratt Tone Preset🙏🙏🙏
thanks dude, I made a separate video where I go over the preset. I did upload the preset to axe change so check that video out.
@@ShredHeads nice! Thanks much
Thanks for uploading in Axechange. What pickups are you using? Did you double track this recording? Tone sounds huge and clear. Is it in stereo? Did you use spdif cable and what audio interface do you use? Thanks
@@briandgr8st I don't know what pick ups that PRS has but they are the stock ones. The beginning riff is mono but once the drums come in its double tracked. that's what i hear on the record. the key to getting it to sound big and full is the reverb. I would use a nice stereo reverb similar to what we hear on the actual record.
@@ShredHeads Thanks bro appreciate the advice.
Round and round. Was played with Laney
I saw martini used a fender super champ
Got more useful info in the comments section than the entire video.
Smart, we all know how accurate and believable RUclips comments are.
I'm practicing it.
Got the chord stretch, but
🤕🤚👈
There are other easier ways to practice it. I think Leon Todd made a video about how to play it easier.
@@ShredHeads i knew that some of the Guitarists "cheated". 😏
I haven't played for a year and need to stretch the "ol grabbers" anyway.
No cheatin for me. 🤷♂️
We need some Michael Schenker tone like rock bottom or save yourself
Even what happens to me
Marshall 100w Super Lead plexi
nerual dsp soldano is the easiest/cheapest way
I know that the neural stuff is good but keep in mind that not everyone has a decent computer with a recording interface and some decent monitors.
@@ShredHeads I'd argue it's cheaper then a tube head. 400 laptop and 250 for a interface and headphones. Focuseite scarlet and audio Technica ath M50x and you are there for 650
@@amfk8079 its certainly an option but there are cheap tube heads out there as well if you want to go for something analog.
@@ShredHeads I had my share when I was a teen, 5150, 5152, mesa single and dual rectifier, marshal dsl 50, tsl 100. jcm 900, jcm 800. tubes are impossible to get right now, you can buy one of these amp sims for 150$ maybe twice a year and have a whole new setup. its not the 80s anymore unfortunately. You can also run your whole live show through a DAW so it makes the cost of starting a band almost nothing
@@amfk8079 I get what you are saying, If I were touring professionally I would use a Kemper or axe fx. The modern stuff we have now is so much more convenient. I'll try to mention some plug in's for future episodes. I just hadn't done my research as to how much they were but I just looked up some of the more popular ones and they seem to be priced at a good price.
You didnt even played the 0s on the 6th string😂😂😂😂
There are different ways you can play and interpret this riff. I play the D note on the 5th string. The stretches are notoriously difficult so you will see many people play it different ways.
@@ShredHeads ….agreed, I have medium size hands and on a strat style guitar the stretches kill my hand…same with the outro on bark at the moon…it freakin hurts!!
Try a G shape off the 10th fret 6th string D note.
$9000 for a Metaltronix amp. Yeah no way.
9k, they regularly sell for way less.
It's funny how many guitarists said they were using "X" and had their stage lined with the amps but behind the amp was a 50W Plexi, JMP or JCM800. Metaltronix were a cheap amp back in the day and noone used them. They sounded like a buzzsaw.
Not even close. Wtf?
I’m sure you got the tone down perfectly. I’m sure the whole internet will agree so please post your amazing tone. 😂
@@ShredHeads Ben Eller does though 🫵🏻🥔
@@morganthus6323 notice how ben eller didn't leave a negative comment. good players don't hate on each other. ive seen his video, thought his tone was good but not perfect. i would never leave some dumb comment claiming his tone sucks.
@@ShredHeads this tone isnt close though. Needed to be said. Otherwise you might go on thinking it resembles the original track in any way, shape or form.
@@morganthus6323 if you can't prove you could do better. Your opinion holds no weight at all.
