80s bands get so walked on by Rolling Stone critics and those 50 and older. It's acceptable to like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, even Black Sabbath. Van Halen is about the end of the acceptance, but they had their start in the 70s so they don't really count. It's cool to see Zappa give a shout out to, likely, DeMartini. I think there was insanely excellent music that deserves to be counted with the 'acceptable' critical darlings. Hopefully as my generation and younger start to write history that will change. I know Eddie Trunk fiercely fights for 80 bands credibility.

@@jrgilbert There you go.While it for sure was some hilarious and exaggerated things in 80'ties hair metal, the whole scene kind of was projecting some positive"its good to be alive" vibe that makes you feel good.Zappa liked that and without any snobbery put it out.As far as critics go,I would not take that to seriously.

The way you played it was the exact way I learned it by ear from Invasion when it came out. We never had access to TAB and RUclips back then so your ears were it. It wasn't until about 10 years ago I saw some live Ratt footage I wondered what Warren was playing and found the "proper" way. I think Robbin's parts have a considerable effect on the riff as he plays chords that work off of Warren's part. Stellar tune from stellar players and an awesome band back in the day.

I'm not a musician, but I found this really interesting. Ratt is one of my favorites bands from my youth. So it was cool to see you explain the different ways one might go about playing this riff. It also explains why sometimes when I hear a cover it sounds different. It's one of those things where if you play it the right way with the big stretch chord rooted on 5th feet of A (D) and then hold that root and make that next stretch even further, ect. It is so much more satisfying to your ears,..Once you get it right, train your hands and discover the "trick" you wont ever look back...There is a very special dissonance in those chords.
I played it like in the video also for about 6-8 years...But I always thought it wasn't right to my ears..Then later watched video of Warren and knew it was wrong..
      Learned it from another guitarist.
Learning this, helped my playing in general.

I'm crushed because that's the way I've been playing it for 9,000 years, since the tab first came out when God was a boy and I was a tadpole guitarist. Now at 53 and knowing the correct way, my arthritis prevents me from playing the big stretch...so, I guess my frozen joints will keep me frozen in time. I'm just glad I can bang out riffs still, and I'm grateful for this great channel that keeps me inspired as I grow ever longer in the tooth, haha.

Not even Jake E. Lee can play Jake E. Lee from 35 years ago. That stretch on the "Bark at the Moon" solo is insane. Not sure I ever bought into the argument about "tone". You sure there wasn't a little ego and showmanship involved in that? It's all moot to me anyway. These 50 year old hands and ears can't tell the difference anyway. Might as well save myself the pain and leave it to my 15 ear old son who can actually play the damn thing correctly...that little shit! :)

Start with the positive…thanks for taking the time. Great content. Sorry, here comes the ‘but’….the biggest thing this and most other tutorials miss is that the opening chord is a straight up power chord that NEVER repeats when the phrase repeats. That lower anchor note is what gives that first second of the song such power.
Thanks again for the great video!

I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for you to make this vid. The way you play it seems so much more relaxed & natural than the correct way.

Nice!!!!! What a great lesson and an amazing attitude!!!! Angus Young said that if you're doing an AC DC song and it's hard to play, you're doing it wrong. Occam's Razor. Sometimes the easiest answer or way, is the correct answer.

PERFECTLY put... I always laugh inside when I see an interview with Ace Frehely .. he's like .. "I have no fuckin idea what I'm doing. I just do this (plays some sloppy riff on guitar)" .. then he says "don't ask me what the fuck that is. It just sounds cool" ... and for anyone that wants to slam Ace's playing... I ask you this... How many of your songs made it to the radio? How much money did you make? .. .cheers Leon... keep up the vids

Great video Leon! That is one of my go-to riffs as well, it just sounds SOOOOO good with and 80s amp/gain structure. The main riff from "Never use love" is another go-to that's almost as good.

at 2:03 you say "on the G,B, and D", do you also drop your high E string to D?
I've always thought drop D just referred to the low E string.

I came to the same conclusion as you! With the dropped D in place, barring the 5th fret D chord is so unnecessary. Cool lesson on being yourself! It's how we all started, then lost our way down the "note for note" trail.

Man I love your philosophy and have lived by it myself ever since I started playing over a decade ago. As someone who’s self taught and just learned tunes by ear, if I was playing it “wrong” but sounded good playing it my way, that’s how I’d play it! You also encapsulated it perfectly, it’s more Rock n roll that way

I hadn't played Lay it Down in literally 20 years until I heard LT play it. I remembered it was a pain in the ass to play "correctly" when I was young and arthritis free, which is probably why I hadnt played it in so many years. So when I saw you play it like that I was super excited because it really is one of the coolest riffs ever written in rock/hard rock and now i can play it again and with authority..so thanks LT from me and im sure many others like me for making that riff a possibility again. I absolutely love it and I never get tired of hearing you play it. It gives me a clearer perspective on whatever amp or pedal you are demoing because I know how it is supposed to sound...also, I mean it when I say you always have THE best tone, feel and vibrato for rock of anyone I have ever heard on YT..I am serious when I say I would rather hear Leon play
Lay it Down wrong than Ben (who I love) play it right.
