The music on Lorde's 'Melodrama' reflects the wealth of emotions the New Zealand native has experienced of late, and they’re rendered with the kind of poise we’ve come to expect from the pop superstar. Her voice, the melodies, the arrangements she’s chosen to help landscape her feelings - this critically-acclaimed second album is particularly fetching because the 20-year-old singer trusts her idiosyncrasies to fuel her eloquence. “Let’s let things come out of the woodwork,” she coos on “Homemade Dynamite.” That’s what makes the six performances of ‘Vevo X Lorde’ so powerful as well. All her best ideas naturally seep to the surface. Filmed at Electric Lady Sound Studios in New York’s West Village, the mid-August session found Lorde moving through key songs from ‘Melodrama,’ providing each with the proper temperament for the occasion. The set list features “The Louvre,” “Sober,” “Writer In The Dark,” “Supercut,” “Homemade Dynamite,” and “Hard Feelings”/ “Loveless” - she chose to spotlight some of the album’s most vivid moments. Whether backed by a small ensemble, playing the piano alone, or singing a cappella with a squad of vocalists and a beatbox, she brings invention and intensity to the performances. The soft addition of strings and brass adds to the show’s intimacy, and the drama that she’s built a rep on is central to every moment. Jack Antonoff of Bleachers, who produced and co-wrote parts of ‘Melodrama,’ arrives on “Writer In The Dark” to support his pal as well.

The first word that came to mind after listening to her new album was "raw" not only the lyrics, but melodies, her singing, everything. I didn't like it the first time I listened to it, but that's how I know it's good. I literally had to put my headphones in, sit down and just listen in order to get it. This album to me, feels like music is supposed to feel like and that makes me so happy because I've though that that time in the music industry was over.

Same. I remember not really grasping Melodrama on first listen. The only song that stood out on first listen was Liability. But, upon the third listen of me just sitting down listening to it and focusing on it, I began to fall in LOVE. Now it’s one of my favorite albums ever.

not to write an essay but i love the horns in song as well as in this performance specifically, she's mentioned before that she wanted them to sound triumphant and i really think they nailed that in this performance, especially since they're almost mellow and not as powerful as maybe the studio version

I just have this clip stucked in my mind for Sober :A clip of Lorde who met a random boy on a boring house party. Lights are warm, sun's fall, they get closer minute after minute. They endlessly drink till they're drunk, they tell each other secrets they never told to anyone and dance. The morning after, Lorde wakes up and realizes that there wasn't any boy with her last night. She was just so fed up with reality that she had imagine the best night of her life. She was being drunk and dancing all night with someone that she wanted to make her forget her ex. She lost her mind and ended spending the night with her pain.

Sober is so hauntingly beautiful and rich and mysterious. It's like a walk in the forest at night, inky blue sky peeking through the dark leaves. The fresh smell of pine needles and the light touch of plants brushing against your skin as you tread through the forest.

I can’t believe I had been able to live without this version of this song
This song makes me feel so nostalgic. I downloaded the entire Melodrama album after it came out for a long flight and Sober was the first song I listened to and made me fall in love with Lorde(I only listened to Royals, Tennis Court and Team before); I literally kept Sober on repeat for 3 hours straight on the plane before listening to the other songs in the album. I always come back and listen to this version of Sober and it makes me emotional and nostalgic and tingly; it's like listening to Lorde's version of ASMR. This version of Sober is the best because its deeper and raw and beautiful :)
