    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
I remember when your head caught flame
It kissed your scalp and caressed your brain
(I remember when your head caught flame)
Well, you laughed, baby, it's okay
    It's buzzcut season anyway
(Well, you laughed, baby, it's okay)
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Explosions on TV
And all the girls with heads inside a dream
So now we live beside the pool
    Where everything is good
    [Verse 2]
We ride the bus with the knees pulled in
People should see how we're living
(We ride the bus with the knees pulled in)
Shut my eyes to the song that plays
Sometimes this has a hot, sweet taste
(Shut my eyes to the song that plays)
    [Pre-Chorus]
The men up on the news
They try to tell us all that we will lose
But it's so easy in this blue
    Where everything is good
    [Chorus]
And I'll never go home again
(Place the call, feel it start)
    Favourite friend
(And nothing's wrong when nothing's true)
I live in a hologram with you
We're all the things that we do for fun
(And I'll breathe, and it goes)
    Play along
    (Make-believe it's hyper real)
But I live in a hologram with you
    [Bridge]
    Cola with the burnt-out taste
I'm the one you tell your fears to
There'll never be enough of us
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Explosions on TV
And all the girls with heads inside a dream
So now we live beside the pool
    Where everything is good
    [Chorus]
And I'll never go home again
(Place the call, feel it start)
    Favourite friend
(And nothing's wrong when nothing's true)
I live in a hologram with you
We're all the things that we do for fun
(And I'll breathe, and it goes)
    Play along
    (Make-believe it's hyper real)
But I live in a hologram with you

"I remember when your head caught flame" is from when she accidentally set her friend's hair on fire in a Chemistry experiment but he laughed it off and wasn't mad. The song is about summer (which she has said), It's about the feeling of summer vacation, when you fall out of routine and have all that freedom it's like you're living in a haze, everything is good and you want to stay out all day. "And I'll never go home again." She doesn't want this peaceful time to end, but she knows that it will, she's only blocking it out of her mind. I like it because even though it's a song about summer it's not about surfing and bikinis, It's about the end of school feeling that anyone still in school understands on a deep level. Summer has a different way of life that's for sure, your life moves to a totally different beat and everything feels strange and good.

my older sisters best friend, since childhood, was diagnosed with cancer in about highschool. she went through chemo therapy of course and all that went with it. she was a soccer player on the same team as my sister and they were her family. she was a legend. she beat cancer towards the end of highschool and went on to a nursing school because she wanted to help people. unfortunately, her cancer came back and she died before she got to graduate. everytime i listen to this song i start to cry because of this. i was young and barely knew anything about her, only that she and my sister were inseparable. my sister recently shaved her head in honor of her lost friend. i can’t help but think of them whenever i listen to this. it’s such a beautiful song, and truly can mean different things to different people. my sister lives on with her buzz cut for her best friend and i will stay crying to lorde songs.

So when I heard this song live. it literally changed my life. Lorde is explaining being a youth in the 21st century. having to cut your hair when you grow up... because you can't get a job with long hair. getting your cut during buzz cut season. the final act of your youth. the men on the news, covering only negativity to the public, she explains how hearing that changes your world, because when you are introduced to the horriors of the real world, the world all around you begins to change. She recalls her memories with her friends where nothing is wrong but nothing is true. The truth she sees is the explosions on TV, not what she does in her holographic world of being a teenager . She realizes how small her world is, and how small her experiences are such as, freedom, friendships, youth. because She understands that living it up with her friends by the pool is a fucking joke compared to the real fear out there, whether that's being a teenager fearing the loss of youth, or a teenager in Syria fearing being shot at or bombed. She is telling us, none of us are real here.. because we distract ourselves from the terror we all experience, and cover it up with trickery. Lorde feels everything, I think we all do... we just are afraid.

"I live in a hologram with you" is like a punch to your soul. You realize all the blissful moments you've had with each other: all the late-night adventures sneaking out, kissing in someone else's bathroom, talking until the sun wakes up; are all just fleeting memories that will never be a part of reality. At the end of the day, you both come home to a house you hate and live a life you dread. It's always too good to be true.

I am a composer and i always felt that key of F is of Nature and Greenery (like the classical and Baroque pastorals, all in F and F#. Or even Mariah Carey's "Dream Lover".). So, for me, when F major becomes F-minor (as in this song), i feel it the Tragedy of Nature. Also, red ("I remember when your head caught flame") is the opposite of green. So there is that contrast going on. And the resolution to the flames is to seek water ("So now we live beside the pool, where everything is good.") The relative-major of F-minor is A-flat: Blue. She even changes the lyrics from "Pool" to "Blue" later on: "But it's so easy in this blue, where everything is good."

Green Grey I really respect Lorde, but things in music aren't as clear-cut as it seems. Sure, you can make a good bunch of money and get famous, but there's a lot that the cameras don't show. She also got her start from an early age, so she had her foot in the door from the get-go, but don't give up on yourself, man. Yeah, life is unfair and it seems that the ungrateful may get the best part, but remember, there's always someone that has worse than you.

I know, right? I'm wondering if that's literally a "Simulacra and Simulations" reference. I hope it is and I hope that she wrote that line and not her co-writer. It'd literally be one of the most intelligent lines in a pop song since... some obnoxiously literate thing Sting wrote, I guess.

Lily Williams well, they do kinda have the same theme. plus, in the royals video (the original, not the us one) you can hear the beginning of tennis court, as if she wanted her music videos to have the same story, but she said that the tennis court video that is uploaded, was never meant to be like that. she must have changed her mind

    scarga el Tono "Buzzcut Season"
    "Buzzcut Season"
    [Verse 1:]
I remember when your head caught flame
It kissed your scalp and caressed your brain
(I remember when your head caught flame)
Well you laughed, baby it's okay
    It's buzzcut season anyway
(Well you laughed, baby it's okay)
    [Chorus 1:]
    Explosions on TV
And all the girls with heads inside a dream
So now we live beside the pool
    Where everything is good
    [Verse 2:]
We ride the bus with the knees pulled in
People should see how we're living
(We ride the bus with the knees pulled in)
Shut my eyes to the song that plays
Sometimes this has a hot, sweet taste
(Shut my eyes to the song that plays)
    [Chorus 2:]
The men up on the news
They try to tell us all that we will lose
But it's so easy in this blue
    Where everything is good
    [Post-Chorus:]
And I'll never go home again
(Place the call, feel it start)
    Favorite friend
(And nothing's wrong but nothing's true)
I live in a hologram with you
Where all the things that we do for fun
(And I'll breathe, and it goes)
    Play along
    (Make believe, it's hyper real)
But I live in a hologram with you
    [Bridge:]
    Cola with the burnt-out taste
I'm the one you tell your fears to
There'll never be enough of us
    [Chorus 1:]
    Explosions on TV
And all the girls with heads inside a dream
So now we live beside the pool
    Where everything is good
    [Post-Chorus]
And I'll never go home again
(Place the call, feel it start)
    Favorite friend
(And nothing's wrong but nothing's true)
I live in a hologram with you
Where all the things that we do for fun
(And I'll breathe, and it goes)
    Play along
    (Make believe, it's hyper real)
But I live in a hologram with you

I recently left my own home and shifted to a new city, a new campus which is even farther away from that city. All those memories and emotions kept drawing me back to those old familiar places, people, my mother who is alone there. I wanted to slowly get rid of this perpetual pathos of nostalgia. Some generic motivational wisdom helped me but this song presented itself in a very quirky manner. These few lines like 'We live beside the pool, where everything is good', 'I'll never go home again' and 'We are what we do for fun..' struck a very different cord in me. Something shifted. I looked at an usual day at the campus, the warm winter sun, the almost yellow dry meadows through which me and the new friends ride bicycles, live together in hostels, a little world of our own, us, the people of a certain generation. Now as this place is slowly growing on me, I look back and listen to this song again. Those weirdly positive and carefree affirmations seems to set something off, always.
