    I have owned about 40 bikes, I have this exact bike (2014) and it is the best bike I have ever owned. I can go through a list of Japanese bikes that have had problems as well. However, BMW was the most costly for me. Bikes are high performance machines and KTM is very high performance but unlike anything else for fun factor. I also have a Ducati and have no expectations of it being reliable. That being said I want the bike that puts the smile on my face and when you buy a vanilla, reliable bike that is exactly what you get. I am sure the maint record on a Ferrari is laughable but people buy them for the fun factor. Enjoy it, fix it and keep enjoying it because you will not find another like it....unless KTM betters this one.

    I have 2016 1290 SA and had only one problem initially, that being coolant level dropping. Once properly bled it was fixed and after 15,000klicks no other faults. I have to say, after 47 years of Touring on many different bikes I found a bike that just does everything and does it so well I don't think i will need another upgrade, ever! To those who know about the excellent 1290 motor/ gearbox/ frame/ brakes combo I would point out that I found the major problem that seems to affect all KTM's. You will find that built-in little resident Evil horn adorned bastard hiding on the right hand side, somewhere between your wrist and fingers. It makes my front wheel thinks its a space shuttle and me think I'm immortal. But I've got a permanent grin

    I now have 30,000 miles on my 2015 KTM1190r and love the bike. about 1/3 of the miles are off road.
    Fuel gauge does not work very often, so is common problem.
    I had a leak through the engine case that was replace on warrantee, that was tough to prove. Just porous casting of case, I guess is happens sometimes.
    I am hoping to put 100,000 miles on the bike.
    We will see. I ride about 20,000 miles a year and spend the rest of my time on my KTM690.
    This bike coast $8,000 less than the BMW 1200 adventure, that was part of what convince me to stay KTM.
    The bike has to be dependable or all of us that go out in the middle of nowhere are in big trouble.
    Thanks for the review.

    My major complaints are (in no particular order): 1. The mirrors, they get knocked loose and are a pain to keep tightening back up with their reverse thread tightening fastener things. 2. The squeaky chain. I always thought maybe the chain isnt adjusted properly but a good lube up will make it go away for a bit. 3. The amount of heat that comes from under the seat. With jeans on, it still gets rather uncomfortable even in mild temperatures... let alone desert 90/100+ degree heat. 4. The airbox. KTM couldnt have picked a more tedious location to put the air filter.
    Complaints aside, I really enjoy riding this bike. The offroad capabilities are nice and it also makes for a good travel bike. I've put a Puig aftermarket taller windshield on it and get no wind to my body or helmet at all now as I am a taller rider and was in the buffeting zone directly.
    I had the same issue with the fuel gauge showing full. A buddy has the R and also has the same issue. I really hope KTM comes out with a recall fix for that but in the mean time I was able to fix it myself. If you pull the shrouds and top tank cover off there is a fuel float tube mounted on the right side. I took it apart and shaved down the cork (?) float slider with a dremel as it stuck every time i rotated the tube where the float would be if the tank was full of fuel. After that I reinstalled it, disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes, then reconnected. Lastly I had to reset both the Trip 1 and Trip 2 gauges and it finally showed me how much fuel i really had. Hopefully the issue is resolved and does not come back.

      @@7arkhwf gladly, and thanks for the reply. My loose steering stem was easily adjusted by the dealer within the first year. My short, broken horn wireless replaced at the same time. I am on my third fuel gauge float. The second one was modified and chamfered so the cork wouldn’t get stuck in the top but eventually it got fuel logged and wouldn’t float. Around 18,000 miles the fuel filter became clogged and I could only get half power. I only put clean a good gas in it, so I surmise it was gummed up by the manufacturing residue of the plastic tank. The issues early on with this model, and the airbox not sealing, was quickly remedied with a Rottweiler intake. Those are all the issues I can recall and considering all of the BDR adventures I have done, it’s an exceptionally reliable machine that brings a ton more performance and enjoyment than any other model from its year.

  • @FirstLast-su7tb
    @FirstLast-su7tb 8 лет назад +2

    The gas gauge issue is the float inside the tank. it goes up and down with the fuel level, when you fill the tank the float rises all the way to the top on a tube. like a doughnut on a stick. you need to sandpaper the top of the float so it doesnt get stuck at the top.

      WarDogTheAwesome well i had a 2016 multistrada and i had issues from 700 miles. I now have a new 2016 Aprilia caponord, and although it does not have the claimed 160hp of the ducati, the suspension is way superior. The ADD (Aprilia Dynamic Damping) is unreal, its constanlty changing the suspension for your style and terrain you are riding on. The other advantage over the ducati is a 19" front wheel, so more of a choice of chunky off road rubber available.

    You can't buy anything that works as advertised for your money nowadays. A few weeks ago I bought a brand new $30,000 amphibious atv called an argo. When I unloaded it at home, I immediately noticed that the machine sounded like it was going to rattle itself apart every time I turned to the right. I also noticed when I removed the floor pan that there were boot prints all over underneath the floor from someone at the dealership driving it around with the floor pans removed trying to figure out the problem. It had 4 hours on the clock. I narrowed it down to a warped rotor, these machines are skid steer and use a brake on either side to brake that side to steer it. Warped rotor on one side was chattering and causing the transmission gears to lash together and apart badly. Since I live 4 hours away from the dealership, I had to purchase and replace the part myself. When I replaced the rotor I noticed a very clear imprint of the brake pads in one spot on both sides of the old rotor. So whoever the genius was at the dealership that first drove it didn't understand that you can't heat disc brakes up insanely hot and then stop and let it sit.
    Now the machine has permanent damage to the transmission that I can hear clunking every time I turn from left to right or vice versa. I'm not even going to bother trying to warranty it, the service foreman at the dealership spent a good 5 minutes explaining to me that these machines make weird noises by design and not to bring it in screaming warranty. This was before I had even picked it up. What a joke. This is the most expensive thing I own including my vehicles and I will never buy anything new again.

    Man, I feel like I’m very lucky. I have a 2015 1290SA and it’s been virtually bullet proof...ridden all through Russia from Germany on pretty tough roads, now doing Australia . I’m certainly aware of the issues some people have had, but the only problem i had was the high beam dipper switch wasn’t working well...it’s a common problem, and the dealer replaced the entire mode switch cluster on the left hand side.
    As for the chain...learn how to lubricate it with good old fashioned oil, not that sticky spray on stuff. I use a Pro Oiler from the Netherlands that has a micro pump deliver a metered dose of oil to the chain according to the distance travelled (by gps, not by time or gravity feed). Still on the original chain and original slider, and the chain hasn’t even been adjusted once in 40,000 km. People regularly get 70,000-100,000+ km using this system.

    it's all relative. In 2005 I bought a brand new Kawasaki ZX10R and at about 1000 miles, the dealer had to do a complete valve job because the bike just didn't run well and they determined ALL valves were off and that's how it came from the land of the Rising Sun. They also replaced the head gasket because it leaked everywhere....so yeah, shit happens. But it was taken care of and loved and rode the crap out of my 10 for the next 12 years....

      madstoppie bought a pearl magma red 05 ZX10r myself. Ran it for 25k without an issue. Should’ve kept it as it was the most comfortable and sexy sport bike to date. Your issues were most definitely an unfortunate anomaly.

      That's exactly the color I had! the best looking one for sure....as far as the issues, that's why I said it's all relative, your issues with the KTM may just be just anomalies....haven't seen people complaining about the same issues you did. All I meant was that maybe, your KTM just had a bad batch of certain parts...an anomaly for KTM. I also had a 2005.5 KTM Adventure S and it was flawless....always. My 2000 Yamaha R6 never ever gave me troubles and I beat that poor thing to shit! Anyway, enjoy it man....I'm getting the itch fro another adventure bike and it will be a KTM...

Because of your review, I'm gonna go for it if its legit and fortunately there's a phone number that matches it's geographic area. Hey! Nice video.
    Just wanted to say that most of all problems you had come from HOW the bike was assembled, not how it's made.
    KTM has nothing to do with those problems, your dealer is.
    All bikes arrive at the dealer in a box, so all assemblino problems come from that process that happens inside the dealer.

    • @Captndarty
      @Captndarty  7 лет назад +1

      Michele Coggiola the bike does come in a box but the only things the dealer has to install are the wheels and perhaps the handlebars. The horn, steering stem, dual float level and rotors are all factory assembly or part quality issues. Yeah maybe the dealer could've checked the steering head but that's about as far as their responsibility goes. They were more than helpful getting things warrantied and fixed.

    I agree with your issues. May I add, yes, horn wiring too short, inaccurate fuel tank gauge, keep an eye on mileage, about 180+ miles on a full gas tank, inaccurate speed, about 10% less than what is showing on a speedometer, for example…showing me 80 mph, but in reality is 72 mph. My headlight/instrument panel became loose and vibrating while driving, nervios lights, lol 😂 While they change tires in certified services, they TWICE punctured/broke bead on inner wheel belt, they have to replace it, too much inconvenience. Accessing air filter and eng. coolant is pain in a but.

    • @Captndarty
      @Captndarty  3 года назад +2

      I couldn’t agree more. I still have her though and almost 30 K on the clock. Once you sort out the issues I have confidence in the solutions you found I haven’t seen anything new creep up. I put an aluminum bracket inside the front headlight made by a guy from Australia called Nerb1. Doesn’t bounce or vibrate. Had the fuel gauge float chamfered and now it doesn’t get stuck. All stuff that shouldn’t be something an owner has to deal with bike but styling and motor can’t even be compared to anything else Japanese made.

    Good review, but I have to say that I had three ktm's so far, 640 Enduro, 690 smc, and now 1190 r.
    I never had any issue with any of them but yes they can be temperamental at times. They are hi performance motorcycles, so you must inspect them before ride and take care of them, unfortunately there is no freebies, Enduros bikes due to the harsh environment, power, performances is equal to take care of it.
    For people that don't want to bother with peculiar maintenance etc... any Japanese Enduros will do the job, but forget about performances, they are powerful enough yes but but not even close to Ktm particularly the 1190 which is a monster, on and off road.
    The power to weight ratio in the 1190 is just in insane.
    The problem you experience unfortunately can happen with any bike, brake as well, and it may not be your case but if you don't breaking in them properly you have a chance to warp them, and by the way those are Brembos which are stock in many hi performance motorcycles.
    Generally speaking if the maintenance is done right and as per schedule this bike will last very long.
    Any initial issue when you buy a new motorcycle or any other product can happen in any brand as long as the manufacturers are behind their product I don't see it as a big problem.
    Enjoy your Ktm!

      I had 690smcr,which i abused a lot,learned to wheelie on it,and it held up rock solid.
      I just replaced stock sprockets,and stock hand grips were pretty terrible making my hands bleed after longer sessions with thin gloves.
      After that,i traded in 690 for EXC 500 supermoto,wich was excelent bike,but i sold it 3 weeks after getting it.
      Now im thinking about lightweight adventure bike,but im kinda stuck between choosing these 2 things: power and mainteance.
      I would like a wr250x or wr250r,but its kinda long road and i dont know will i lack power.

      I would suggest 690 or 701 if you target extreme off road on your trip, or 1090 R, if you are budget concern get the Honda CB 500X with the Adventure KIT, it's a beast, it will do off road and road no problem, the reviews are very positive the bike is not too heavy and decent power, and it cost 20% less all included than a 690 or 701.

    Most of the fuel gauges get stuck on the 1190 R and are not accurate. You need to take it to the dealer and get it fixed. It is totally unreliable until you make the fix and you should zero out the trip meter and use it until you get the fix.

      Bill Johnson the 1190 models have been know to have issues with the lid to the airbox not sealing properly and allowing dust into the intake trumpets. I elected to go with a Rottweiler intake system completely mitigating the chance of this problem.

      @@csiautodetail very cool! I have thought about the Touratech suspension as well. Might still do that or the Konflict setup. I have the Rottweiler on mine as well. Only real niggle I have with the bike is the fuel float. You have to pull it out, disassemble the unit in chamfer the top of the cork so it doesn’t get stuck. Works fine now for me. Also at around 18K my fuel filter clogged. Replaced it with factory components and haven’t had any issues since. I suspect it’s manufacturing residue in the tanks that are causing a white pasty gum so I would have that done as well if I were you.

    When I bought my 2017 390 Duke, the dealer told me that the warranty could be voided if I didn't use the stock KTM air filter, as well as changing the stock exhaust to anything besides the Akrapovic system. Is that not the case?

    • @Captndarty
      @Captndarty  6 лет назад

      Jake Furmaga my dealer did the install on all my parts. Perhaps it’s subjective based on your dealer and how far they are willing to work with you if you have a warranty claim with KTM. My rotors aren’t effected by anything I installed so that’s an easy claim to file.

    Проблемы KTM 1190 Adventure
    Вот мой личный, довольно подробный обобщенный список проблем этого мотоцикла наблюдаемых мной, моими знакомыми и «людьми с этих ваших интернетов». Их не стоит бояться, нужно просто понимать что любой человек поездивший на любом мотоцикле будет способен по своим наблюдениям составить такой-же список. Например на «тот-самый железный неубиваемый» BMW GS 1150 могу набросать даже длиннее.
    1. Скручивающийся при засорении масляный фильтр до загорания лампы низкого давления!
    2. Пыль попадающая в айрбокс
    3. Выскакивающий привод амортизатора - ведет к очень дорогостоящему ремонту(вычитал где-то)
    4. Вскипает тормозная жидкость в заднем суппорте при активном торможении
    5. Быстро усаживаются седла клапанов вплоть до невозможности отрегулировать
    6. «Ссущие» гидронатяжители на которых теряется масляное давление
    7. Часто засоряющийся топливный фильтр(знаю человека в Питере, который меняет его раз в год). Имеются наборы для лечения этой проблемы от Guglatech
    8. Слабые цепи ГРМ(за 30т растянуты запредельно)
    9. Жидкий обод переднего колеса.
    10. Встречается ослабленный натяг подшипника рулевой колонки.(проверьте у кого вобблинг)
    11. Жалуются на вобблинг. Есть мнение, что в 90% случаев виноваты кофры, и обратите внимание на пункт #10.
    12. Встречается бракованный клапан вентиляции бензобака из-за чего при открытии случается бензиновый гейзер высотой метр
    13. Хреновая штатная система крепления кофров и сами кофры
    14. Глючность электроники в дождь
    15. Гнущийся верхний болт амортизатора
    16. Ломающаяся центральная подножка( у меня не сломана но неприятно стучит)
    17. Трудность замены ламп в фаре
    18. Хреновая штатная ветрозащита
    19. Фара разбалтывается. Есть рецепт лечения - аллюминиевый кронштейн, описан здесь ruclips.net/video/JpCEy76Uj5M/видео.html
    20. Отваливаются провода сигнала
    21. Запотевающая изнутри приборка(у меня ни разу)
    22. Грязь из под переднего колеса летит в переднюю голову, как следствие - коррозия, ухудшается отвод тепла
    23. Отсутствие защиты справа от выхлопной трубы(для себя не видел такой проблемы)
    24. Кому-то «печет» от мотора.
    25. Слетают резинки направляющих лобового стекла при верхнем положении
    26. У кого-то уходит уровень антифриза.
    27. У кого-то слабый стартер на моделях до 15го года. У меня все норм.
    Кстати, слышал мнение, что KTM 1190 - самый лучший во всем мире мотоцикл! И не только во всем мире - но даже заграницей. Всем пись

      Jool I don’t think any of the part numbers have changed between the two models other than the items that have been upgraded. It is possible they’ve gone to a different vendor who might make the same park better. I’m about 10 minutes from my dealer. This is not a terrible design. The fact it’s an exquisite design one of the best ones out there. It’s in my opinion that the small ancillary downfalls are due to the arrogant pride of KTM. They build a amazing chassis, motor, but couldn’t be bothered with some of the little nuances. They have all been sorted out with little to no other issues over 7 years and 30,000 miles. • @Captndarty
      @Captndarty  2 года назад

      @@THX5000 I would absolutely pick the KTM over the Honda. If power is your thing the KTM has 50% more. These bikes spend 90% of their time on slab or dirt roads so the power matters to me especially loaded with gear and at high altitude. That being said I still ride technical off-road in full sport mode. It’s nice when standing because I only have to twist throttle a tiny bit to get the power I need. Besides that I prefer the ergonomics of the KTM to the Honda as well. You can’t go wrong with the Honda but like most Japanese bikes they’re conservative which translates to a less rambunctious visceral experience. The Honda has its problems that need sorting as well.

      It really depends on your skill level. I’m 191 cm and can just get the balls of my feet on the ground. Also depends on how thick your boot sole is. For normal writing I would say you would be OK but if you get into some real big boulders where you have to put your foot down and it’s too far that could be an issue as I’ve almost tipped it over that way

      Robson Enduro after 23,000 miles I’d say yes it’s trust worthy. There’s a learning curve tho. The rotors crapped out again likely due to glazing or worn floaters.
