    Excellent review. I have a 2014, base model (not the 'R'). I totally agree about not buying a new model when first out. I purchased my bike, new in Feb 2016, because I had a KTM 990 SMT, which I loved. Perfect bike - It did everything well - except serious touring, and I'll soon be taking the 1190 from the east to the west coast of the US, and into Canada, an 8,000 mile trip. I looked at a 2015 1190 in spring of 2015, but was looking at the full MSRP of $16,499 - about $18,000+, out-the-door, with no accessories, and I've added a bunch to my 2014, about half of which I was unaware I would need (panniers, a better seat, larger pegs, skid plate, upper and lower engine guards, an LED headlight & auxiliaries, windshield - and about $500 in more minor stuff - a total of about $3500).
    I loved the SMT and should have kept it, but wanted to stay married, and although my wife doesn't know one bike from another, she can count. But I made the mistake of reading the Road Test in Cycle World. It's not designed to go fast, per se, but they reported a 10.68 quarter at 130mph. You are exactly right. It has (almost) liter super bike performance, but Adventure touring ergonomics and comfort, and state-of-the-art safety. Eighteen months after looking at the 2015, I saw mine advertised for $12,999, and got it out the door for 14. The dealer had had the bike for nearly two years and he wanted it sitting somewhere, apparently almost anywhere, other than on his showroom floor. I wish I had spent an extra thousand and bought the 2015 he also had.
    I have a love/hate relationship with the bike. On the one hand, when everything is working, it is the most thrilling, euphorogasm producing, *fun* motorcycle I've ridden in 50 years. It is the prototype that explains why I ride. On the other hand, often, some small thing is not working properly - some irritating little thing is wrong - most of which I attribute to it being the model's first year. I'll bitch, bitch, bitch about it and my friends will ask, "why don't you get rid of it... get a Japanese bike?"
    "ARE YOU *F**KING* CRAZY. AND NOT RIDE A KTM"
    It makes me smile, too. I want to ride at every opportunity. I won't even use a car to go to the supermarket, a mile away. (I'll take the long way, making it 10 miles away.) The dealer is almost two hours away and if I have to leave it for 2 or 3 days for service, or fixing - or longer if parts are needed (nearly as I can figure, KTM stores their parts on the moon), I get claustrophobia. Just knowing it's outside, even if I don't ride that day, creates a feeling of comfortable, satisfying, freedom, and darn it, I'm just not happy when it's gone . I've never felt that way about a motorcycle.
    In a couple of years the 1190 will be paid for and I'm already lusting after the 1290 Super Adventure (S)port, which KTM began importing into the US a couple of months ago. MSRP is $17999. I'll need to find a 2018 for about $16,000, out-the-door, so that it will be stay under 20, fully farkled.
    Again, terrific review. Many thanks.

      No, thank you for the long comment. I wouldn't change from a 1190 to a 1290, yes it's got more bling and electronics (Read: Things that go wrong) and the weight sits a bit higher up. Perhaps it's more refined, but that's where the differences end.
      Thanks to my back injury I am test riding the Husqvarna 701 Enduro (2018) for fun...its so rudimentary that it makes you realize how spoilt you are on a 1190, but it also has a lot of fun behind it and a lot less weight.

    Thank you for thorough, tongue in cheek, review. With all this said, I think I will go with next year's 1090 unless they go and add more electronics again.

    Just bought a 1290 SA R based on your evaluation, Nerb1's and others. Most problems and design issues of the 1x90 series are now well documented and can be adressed easily. That 1290 makes me grin every day I ride it! Already own a 690 RFR, but this beast is vastly superior in luggage capacity and touring capabilities on tarmac and fire-road grade gravelroads ;-)

      Dear God...it happened. People are actually listening to my opinions. I expect locusts and frogs to befall the land shortly.
      The 1290 will not be hindered by these, but the frogs will make the roads slippery.

    Its funny, mine is a 2013 and ive had very few problems. I actually wonder, because the bikes are hand built, is there a lot of variance in the build quality? Did i get a monday bike while a lot of problems occur with friday afternoon bikes?

    • @PatrickFlinner
      @PatrickFlinner  6 лет назад

      If you mean sitting and putting feet down while stationary, then a lower seat option from KTM would be the easiest option. While riding again a seat or a different set of foot pegs. Wearing adventure boots may help as well as their sole is usually thicker. Seatconcepts.com comes to mind as well.

    I was looking for KTM 1290 SAR but I have to say that they are not practical thought, I mean for easy maintenance like cleaning the air filter I have to dismount the entire gas tank...with my GSA, I take out the upper plastic and done. Like mentioned for coolant liquid I just take out an opening and done, no need to take out an entire side. Let’s see what BMW brings with the new engine

    I recently rode a 1090 R and a 1290 S on the same morning. I noticed the turn in was much easier on the 1290 - suspect the rake is similar on the two bikes, but the trail is less with the 19 inch wheel. Shame they don't sell a 1090 S in the US as I don't intend to go off-road and I don't want the 1290's electronics - sure to fail.

    I found the engine heat is not an issue if you duct tape a whole uncooked chicken to your arse at the start of a day's ride. At noon, flip the bird (I'm referring to the aforementioned chicken) and by the end of the day, solid comfort and a delicious roasted chicken dinner at the ready.

    • @PatrickFlinner
      @PatrickFlinner  4 года назад +2

      Yes, I would recommend bikes of 2014+ reason being that the dealers fixed the issues encountered with the 2013 models, e.g. airbox leaks, electronics, etc . When viewing one of these bikes, start it up and listen to valve chatter. Usually around 30,000km this occurs if the maintenance schedule was poor or the poor thing was abused.

      The new one is impressive. But it is heavier in the top and for offroad fundies a bit more of a chore than the 1090. Suspension is luxury, so are the electronics...until something breaks. I would rather wait for the Yamaha, KTM 790 or try a Husqvarna 700, as it is lighter and better suited for offroad and mild touring.

      BMW: Big, heavy, comfortable and hellishly expensive when something breaks, which it will off road. Secondhand units rarely have seen any dust. HONDA: Reliable, relaxed, competent, for shorter riders a good deal. Avoid 1st release models though. KTM: Powerful, heavy, more competent off road than on, not as comfortable as the others, secondhand units will have seen off road action. Non-R version easier to live with.

I ve always ride japanese bike.. And leave fiability of japan bike for à ktm..... Make me affraid a little.. I know it would be give me a lot of pleasure but..... I dont understand everything when you speak about the problem of cold start due to the airbox... You say that problem is coming from the airbox of 2013-2014 models with dust Who enter in the intake ? In Europe there were a campain, their solution was to change the starter to à bigger one of 1290 superduke.. But apparently that works but not totally efficient... What do you préconise ? Thank my friend for reading ans asking.. Take care of you in this period of corona and have long life on beautyfull road

    • @PatrickFlinner
      @PatrickFlinner  4 года назад

      3100kms!? Very suspect. 6 years old and such low mileage. It better have an annual service record. Changing the starter would only have forced the engine to chew the sand in the engine and destroy the valves. Potential suicide. Europe is not as dusty as Australia or South Africa, but ask about the filter box issue regardless. If you find a bike with low mileage and good service history and extras, go for it. Or at least take it for test drive, switch it to sport mode and hold on tight!

    Hmmm, fabricate aluminum pieces to cure plastic woes? Take apart the bike, including the gas tank, so you can change the air filter? Head light wobble? Didn't mention the motor oven-like heat. If I did it over, I would not buy this bike. A new owner shouldn't need to "fix" the bike before taking it home. I have exema on my legs, and the heat physically hurts. Rottweiler air box, new slip on muffler, body part heat shields, manifold insulation, and seat heat shield, just so I can ride the thing! However, I plan a trip down the Baja, Cherry Creek AZ, around Esqudida mountain AZ, maybe the Devil's Highway that parallels the Mexican border, and up to Chaco Canyon NM. I just hope it doesn't leave me stranded. Given the slew of problems, design and materials, I now have little confidence in the bike, and KTM should be ashamed of selling a bike with out addressing these issues. Look at this video critically; jerry rigged repairs to keep the air box lid intact, and hand made brackets for the head light. You have to be a fabricator to keep it going. The kick stand is mounted to the engine, which can break off, and can even pierce the motor, $6-8K to repair. I ordered a part to move the kick stand mount to the frame. I feel I made an expensive mistake. I completely accept I made the mistake, but wish I hadn't. I will write KTM. Before I get called a pussy, consider blowing a hot air dryer on a sun burn, then we can talk.

      Back to the topic: This is why I prefer to view motorcycle reviews from Blue collar riders. Honesty, not paid for advertising. Not every bike is perfect, some require elbow grease and creativity and I believe that this is where the fun comes in...to a certain degree. I doubt the bike will strand you if you are as meticulous as you described yourself and if it does: Credit card and a sense of humour.
      Lastly: Hairdryer on a sunburn? Don't give my wife any ideas here!

    Have to say that I'm kind of disappointed with KTM to see so much problems with a premium adventure bike. I know that my Transalp 600 is not a comparison in power or performance but still...its even better than the the old Africa Twin and has less thing to break on it. Why cant just they build a bike like the 1190 R with the same engine, but far less complicated in terms of electronics and design.

      Amen. If I wanted to do world touring I would've opted for Yamaha 660 Tenere or stuck with my old KLR650. 1190's are great machines, but I get the feeling the more electronics they pump into the modern bikes (all manufacturers) the more Quality Control falls to the wayside.

      I'd probably nitpick that to death as well...starting with the rusting spokes, dwarven seat height, etc

      It's not my fault that the dealer insist on washing it every time it goes in for repair! There was dirt on it! I swear!

    Hi Patrick, just want to hear if you can give me your email. Just want to chat about the KTMs. I bought me one and just want to hear about what did you experience with the ktm. The video is cool. I have also a few faults with my ktm.
    Hope we can get in touch

    Patrick, praising “The Donald” puts over 60 million Harding working people in your camp! That’s a good thing. Plus you are lining us all out on the KTM just like DJT is doing with the swamp creatures.
    Good luck 2U.

    Come on I think that you doing a fine job with the tear down of what's the pros and cons are, even though Germany puts out Top Notch stuff ,you guys are a bunch of chronic complainers, just get on the bike and have fun you guys would complain if you got a woman that was built like a perfect 10 that couldn't talk, you would complain about something ,about that, that's the perfect woman, so I am going to find me another video that doesn't sound like a whiny Schoolboy, even when you're giving the pros, you sound like you need a handkerchief for all the tears while you're complaining, I'm going to go find something that's a little bit more objective.
