The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC!
They worked on this for (I think) 5 years to be sure they did justice to the original. And the shooting stars are a tribute to Brian May who really is an astrophysicist!
I’m not sure why people say they worked on it for 5 years. They didn’t. It just took them 5 years to decide they wanted to attempt it. They had been worried that it was such an iconic song that they wouldn’t be able to do it justice or that it didn’t even need to be covered but it didn’t take them 5 years of working on it.
The shooting stars are for guitarist, Dr Brian May, and there's one for each member of Queen! When this first came out, Dr. May posted a link to it on his social pages with on word... "Enjoy!" 😊 Many people cover this but leave out the opera part. Even Queen used to play a video of that part or left it out entirely when performing live! Brian May was very impressed with this video from PTX! ❤
The megaphone is just a prop. Mitch does the guitar solo live. He has the ability to do amazing things with that voice of his
Scott Hoying is the tall Blonde and Baritone, Mitch Grassi is the Counter Tenor, Kirsten Maldonado is the Mezzo Soprano. The 3 of them grew up together in Arlington Texas. Then you have of course Kevin Olusola the beat boxer extraordinaire and the Bass singer here is Avi Kaplan he was the original Bass when they won the show the sing off. He left the group in 2017 on good terms and the same year Matt Sallee joined them as their new Bass and of course you have seen him and he is incredible also.
Kevin's beat boxing in this is phenomenal!!!!
Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody Insights:
So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, the four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, and the overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. -The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. -Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. -The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on RUclips, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing. Also when Brian Mays heard it... then he posted it on his web site with the word "ENJOY”.
🎄🎄O, come all ye faithful! you will be dancin and singin all the way to Bethlehem with this one! 🎄🎄 it makes me SO happy! 😄 i've been loving your reactions of PTX!! you two seem like the sweetest people and I cannot wait to see the Christmas PTX reactions! Love from Canada 💖
They did not do it in 1 take, but the video editing was so good, it looks like 1 take 😮
There is a “Behind the Scenes” of this that you might enjoy.
Great reaction ❤
One carol you really need to be able to hear is "O Come All Ye Faithful".
Hey. I’ve been married for 54 years and we have had a great 😊 life and marriage, raised a stunning son, still love each other and self designed a successful life that has been more than we could have imagined. ❤❤❤❤ I wish you the same. Always Respect and listen to one another.
PS. ,,,,PTX makes me very very happy
I won’t repeat what others have said, but I also believe that the scene with the stars was a homage to Freddie Mercury! Kevin’s beatboxing, and this is fantastic! You definitely have to watch Hallelujah I believe it has like some 762 million reviews! I love watching your reactions!
Avi Kaplan was the original bass. He left the group in 2017 and Matt Sallee took over.
The best remake of an iconic song with or without instruments.
🎄Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. A song with no words done by a group with no instruments. Also won them a Grammy. Avi (the bass with the beard) really shows his stuff in that one. 🎄
These guys are just flippin amazing alien unicorns! It took them 5 years to feel ready to do this song and to do it the justice that it deserves. They are all massive Queen fans. Brian May, lead guitarist from Queen, heard this song when it came out and posted a link to his socials with the one word comment 'Enjoy!' I feel like that is giving Queen's Seal of Approval right there!
They also inserted a lot of references and easter eggs into this video in tribute to the original video - which by the way, if you haven't seen - you should probably check it out! Queen couldn't perform this song live because of all the layering they did in post! And not only can Pentatonix do this Live, but the Mitch Grassi Guitar has no need for a Megaphone. Mitch just saw it lying around the set and decided to use it to draw attention to who was doing the guitar solo part - the megaphone was not on, Mitch can do this live!
The couch is in reference to their beginning videos where they recorded themselves on various of theirs couches to post onto RUclips after they were dropped by Sony because they didn't think that Acapella would be popular enough to sell records. It is also a tip of the hat to Wayne's World movie scene with the car and head banging to this song which brought in a whole new generation to Queen's music!
The part where Mitch is laying on the couch is in reference to Freddie's death and the members walking alongside are his coffin's Pallbearers. A lot of the visuals in here are in tribute to the original video's trippy graphics; like when they all line up and do the 'oh, oh, oh's' one after the other, and also when they line up behind Kirstie standing on the couch only to fan out behind her with their vocal parts.
The shot of the sky is in tribute to Dr. Brian May who is Queen's lead guitarist and also an astrophysicist! Each shooting star represents a member of Queen. When they all collapse onto the couch with the shot from above is a homage to the cover art of Queen's record 'Sheer Heart Attack'
Also I am pretty sure, Mitch is a reincarnation of Freddie Mercury - one...he can grow the Freddie Stash and looks so much like Freddie that it is kinda creepy - two...he can sing just as high if not higher than Freddie could - and three...Freddie died 8 months before Mitch was born!
A I Kaplan the Bass that you only saw a few times was the original bass singer. He had to leave in 2917 for personal reasons but it was a very amicable split. He was replaced by Matt Salee
🎄please, definitely react to O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL.. Amazing!!
Awesome reaction! This is a true tribute to Queen. When they pan to the stars, the four shooting stars are for the band members and for Brian May who got his degree in astrophysics. They did an amazing job on this. Oh, and if you want to just have some fun please check out Sing. If you're not singing after that then there's a problem.
You two are just too cute!
You know who else has a great marriage? PTX !! There is no way these five perfectionist were brought together except by the grace of God. I’ve followed their music for a long time. They are family! They are friends! They care about each other and they get along. I pray for them because I know what Satan does to people in entertainment. God has gifted this band and they need our unconditional love and prayers.
I love to watch people react who are new to PTX. You two are no exception. You are so fun to listen to and watch. What I can’t believe is that I don’t see a reaction by you for “Hallelujah”. No doubt you’ll get there, unless I just missed it.
God bless you and keep Jesus in the middle of your marriage. Marriage really does take three. 🙏🕊✝️
Thanks for this reaction! 🥰
And they are ALWAYS on fantastic mode. I'm always stunned. Scott Hoying. I always tell people my favorite vocalist in PTX is the one that is singing at that time, they are all just unbelievably talented. I'm up for it!!! 🎄
Try one of their many originals...Love Again.
They have 8 Christmas albums so the sooner the better, they have so much to get through. There newest album The greatest Christmas hits was released oct 20th and it has 8 new songs. Please Santa please us the only new one with a video so far. Oh holy night and Christmas (Baby please come home) are my favorites of the new songs.
🎄my favorito songs that you should react to are Thank you, Evergreen (hits different after I lost my mom), Hark! The Herald angels sing, O holy night, Silent night. PTX owns Christmas.
It took them 6 years to to pull this off.
…..I believe they did it more then justice…..
Queen’s Brain May even gave them shout out……This was the first PTX video I saw…I’ve been hooked since….You guys will also become a true Pentaholic. Enjoy your journey…..They will never let you down…..Judy D
Just their voices folks! 🤯🤯🤯🤯
All voices no instruments! Genius 😊
I think y'all would love The Prayer and Mary Did You Know by them.
Please react to Pentatonix singing:
The Prayer
Amazing Grace
Mary Did You Know
Oh Come All Ye Faithful
Imagine
🎄would love to see you do their Christmas music. So much to choose from!
The side-to-side in the beginning is what Queen did in their studio version. They really pay tribute to the original in this work of art. The whole thing is amazing. I've listened to this at LEAST 100 times. It STILL impresses the heck out of me!! I KNEW you two would LOVE this one!
Lots of Christmas music from them, PLEASE!!! 🎄🎄🎄
With christmas coming, listen to their version of 'come all ye faithful' and 'Mary did you know'.
🎄🙌🏻yaaaaasss! Also those glasses and the braid 🔥 I’d love a reaction to Imagine and their original Love Again (who says accapella can’t do EDM? 🤯)
Love how people are shocked with the headphone switch, but this was a part of the original song by Queen
guys, pentatinix couple years ago, got their own star on the holywood walk of fame
Absolutely Christmas.❤
It wasn't a one shot, though long sections of it were. There are a ton of live versions of this if you ever want to check one out - they usually use it as their encore in concert. Yes, Scott has an incredible soulful pop voice and nobody riffs like Scott riffs 🎄
Pentatonix - “My Heart With You” (Live), Daft Punk, Amazing Grace, Sing, Imagine
Peace, Love!! 🎄
His name is Scott Hoying and he is a beast!
The megaphone is a prop, by the way. Mitch sounds like that live without the megaphone. 🎄 definitely do live for Christmas 🎄
To see them do one shots, please do some of there evolution videos.
They just released their new video of Please Santa Please. It’s an original written by Kirstin and Kevin. 🌲
I love this it is fantastic there voices are so good I can’t believe sing they like that brilliant 😊😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
🎄great reaction again!
🌲The First Noel and Carol of The Bells and Joy to The World and O Come All Ye Faithful and, and, and …….🙏🏼
If you plan a Christmas A Cappella playlist, you really need to consider Voice Play, Home Free, and Voctave along with Pentatonix. They will ALL slay you with Christmas amazingness!! In particular, I would STRONGLY suggest "O Come, All ye Faithful" by Voctave. The soloist is truly remarkable. 🎄
🎄great reaction guys
It's great watching those experience this group for the first time.
I usually suggest their version of Hallelujah as the starter. That original video has 722 million views on youtube. I actually prefer the live version 🎄from their NBC Christmas special (with a mere 51 million views).
Special time of year to watch them as they have released about 7 Christmas albums. And usually perform live dates the last couple months of the year.
I even saw a clip with Scott (the tall blonde baritone) Googling for a list of Chrstmas songs that Pentatonix has NOT recorded.
Of course, the search came back with "No results"
Just so you know, that part, you like so much of the panning the song from ear to ear new earphones at that park at the beginning, that was something that the original singer Freddie Mercury wanted to do when he recorded the song! So, like on the original Queen album with this song, Pentatonix, pays respect and tribute by doing the same thing that Freddie Mercury wanted to do because that’s what Freddy thought the song should sound like that part.
Ok ,I've watched some of your reaction videos, subscibed. My opinion, she is a Bass guy (Avi, Matt) although appreciate all the others. But he is Mitch slapped. Oh you're in for a ride. 😊
I would love to see you guys react to The Beginners Guide To Pentatonix. It explains so much and really makes you appreciate what they do.
Amazing vocal talents!
❤❤❤
Joyful, Joyful ☃️. Could not find a christmas tree enoji.
You two are so darling and love that you put Jesus Christ first in your lives. ❤ 🙏🏻
Don’t know if anyone commented on this or not, but, the megaphone is just a prop. If you watch a live version of this he doesn’t have it. Incredible!
having been a huge queen fan since 1976 this is the ONLY Cover of any queen song i will listen to and approve of and that is only because i know freddy mercury would have loved this version..
🎄 that’s Christmas to me ❤
Love this song. Not sure if you have seen Queen perform it but you should check it out if you haven’t. Freddie Mercury is amazing.
Loving your reactions and good luck with your channel! ❤ 🎄
🎄 They definitely have a lot of Christmas material. A good one for now would be Making Christmas from the Nightmare Before Christmas. It's kind of a Halloween/Christmas song.
I already have my Christmas tour.
You can learn all about the Group by watching “Beginners Guide to Pentatonix” very interesting.
Please react to this🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Please, Please Christmas!!! Both Avi and Matt!!!!!!
🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Truly enjoy checking out you reactions. Here is a suggestion that I am sure that you and your listeners will enjoy. The Bee Gees "Too Much Heaven" The Official Video version.
They have an original called Sing that you would probably like.
Great reaction video! For a good sampler of their singing give "PTX Tic Toc compilation " A try.
Please react to Prayers for This World by Pentatonix. I'm excited to see you start Christmas music by Pentatonix. O Come All Ye Faithful will blow your mind
Recommend their cover of I Just Called To Say I Love You.

If you enjoy Mitch making "weird" sounds - and who doesn't? - check out the live concert performance of "Popspring". Added enticement, it includes a montage of Michael Jackson songs. Always enjoy your reactions! Thanks for sharing.

Wish I was still married. My husband passed away at 60 from cancer 14 months ago. What advice do you have for an older woman that has found herself as widowed???
Do " Seasons of love"
Great reaction! Can you guys check out their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" next? Thanks in advance! =) 🎄
Not a one shot. To see a great one shot check out Home Free's mash-up of Thinking Out Loud/Let's Get It On.(Ed Sheeran/Marvin Gaye).
To see their real talent, please check their evolution videos. The Evolution of Rhianna is my favorite. Just the 5 in a room. No production. All one take
Check out Say Something and Havana
They did a song for ninja turtle movie years ago
Such a sad sad song.
go down the Chris Stapelton rabbit hole
Love y'all reaction ❤️
But one thing
Not tryna be rude bro
But that beard need to go 😭
They are not of this Earth
Sadly we are at opposite extremes. You are a young couple beginning. I’m a grandmother on a limited income. Can’t afford payment for electricity much less a request. I’m hearing this one.
Then I’m leaving.
We must all try to survive.
Your survival is in line ahead of mine. You’re parents. I’m a grandparent. If it were a card game…. you trump me.
I get it.
It’s a money game.
Sorry, guys. I can't follow. Apparently this is all about you and not the music.
