So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, the four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, and the overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. -The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. -Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. -The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on RUclips, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing. Also brian mays of queen upon hearing this posted it to his page with the word "ENJOY"
Wow, thank you so much for all of this! I appreciate that! I found PTX just about two weeks ago, so I am so happy for all of this interesting and important info. Thank you! :)
Oh, the Brian May bit made me tear up a little. I’ve been following them since their Evolution of Music and Evolution of Beyoncé videos and couldn’t be prouder of them and their journey.
Need a moment of appreciation for Kevin switching back and forth between beatboxing "We will not let you go" to singing harmony on "Let me Go". Absurd vocal agility.
Nobody ever comments on the part where they sing "Let me go..No, I will not let you go" Scott is singing both of those parts. He is working so hard on both of those parts. I love that part.
I noticed Kevin singing on that same part and how his voice would cut off to do the percussion but Kirsten held out the notes. No one else seems to realize how much Kevin is doing on this song, singing and percussion, going back and forth between the two.
The panning ( 3:47 ) was present in the original by Queen. 4:03 "Ooh! Oh, wow! There's me thinking 'Oh, just back to their original, you know, just sittin' on the couch singing along...'" That was a deliberate reference on their part. *This* couch is taking them on a trip down Memory Lane, where so many of their early videos were just five young people, sitting on a couch, singing their hearts out. 8:50 "Ooh! Avi's voice!" Yep. And his smile. Avi has such a beautiful smile. Actually, they all do; it's one of the things I like most about Pentatonix (not that there's anything I like less about them). 9:33 And there it is, the Mitch-slap we were all waiting for. And since it *did* take you by surprise I have to believe that this actually was your first time watching this. It's counter-intuitive, but the megaphone had nothing to do with the guitar solos; those are all Mitch. He does them live with nothing but a microphone. The megaphone was just something Mitch saw lying around on the set and thought would make a cool prop, and it's been confusing people ever since. In the operatic section the interesting lighting is provided by five flashlights. Ingenious, and very effective. 15:15 "Was that Mitch on the A-flat 4?" Yes, it was. However, please note that Kirstin could have done it just as well as Mitch; there is some genuine doubt about which of them actually has the higher voice. For angelic high vocal arrangements (say, "The Prayer") give me Mitch any day. But when it comes to belting out the high notes Kirstin is equally talented. Approximately 18:00 The starry sky is a tribute to Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics. The four shooting stars are for the four members of Queen. The shot of Pentatonix lying on the couch while Mitch finishes Freddy Mercury's solo is a reference to the cover art of Queen's _Sheer Heart Attack_ album. In case it isn't obvious by now, Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody." It was important to them to get this song right. They did a fine job.
Something that I think gets overlooked is Kevin during the "let him go" section is how deftly he switches from singing "let him go" with Kirstie and Scott, then immediately beatboxing for the response from Avi, Mitch and Scott. And that Scott is on both sides of the call and response in that section
In an interview years prior to finally making this video, when asked if there was a song they didn't think that they would attempt to do acapella, the answer was "Yes, Bohemian Rhapsody". Your analyses are so interesting and enjoyable, Jen!
My understanding, once PTX decided to do this cover, they waited and worked with it for 5 years before they felt right about producing it. Mitch, when it came to the guitar solo called out "get me a megaphone, I've got this!" may or may not be true, but he got it fine and when doing this live, he doesn't use the megaphpne and he still sounds perfectly the same. Great reaction Jen!
Actually, they always wanted to do it, but didn't think they could do it justice, so they waited five years until they finally thought they were ready. (My personal guess, and I emphasize that it's *just* a guess, is that Mitch's discovery of his inner electric guitar was the tipping point.) After they finally decided it was time they still had to create the arrangements and choreography, figure out how to motorize a couch, rehearse, and I don't know what-all. Judging only by the dates, those jobs took several more months, maybe a year or two. I believe the megaphone was a last-minute addition - Mitch saw it lying on the set and thought it would make a good prop. It isn't doing anything to the guitar solo; that's entirely Mitch. And now I'm kind of wondering whether we'll see him in a violin duet with Lindsey Stirling.
You don't cover a song this iconic unless you can absolutely slay it and they did. Even Brian May enjoyed this. It's probably the best cover Pentatonix has ever done.
The shot of the night sky with all the stars during the second "guitar"solo is an homage to Brian May if I remember correctly. Such a respectful and fun cover :)
I looooove watching experts disarm and explain every harmony and vocal arrangement that makes the magic of Pentatonix , these videos could be 1 hour and i could still want more. Great video 👍
Tremendous homage to Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor. Great presentation and fantastic arrangement. Loved your analysis Jen and, as usual, you identified things that I hadn't noticed before which will make listening to this even a better experience in the future.... I KNEW you'd be impressed with the megaphone , although Mitch doesn't use one when performing this live. I think that Kevin's abilities were showcased here more that any other PTX song I've heard before. Excellent! Love your channel Jen, keep going strong!
Kevin's ability to switch between singing and beat boxing in this is flawless and probably the most impressive aspect of the whole song. He's working his butt off!
The use of the sofa in the video is a callback to their early videos when their production amounted to them recording new content on a sofa in one of their homes. Thanks for the reaction.
Not many people that react to this song realize Kevin is the one singing at the end. Probably the only other time Kevin really sang was in Mary Did You Know which I believe was the first time he actually sang
Such an amazing arrangement, with many great moments from everyone, but I think my favorite part is when Mitch imitates the guitar solo with a megaphone.
FOR something different from them watch the Daft Punk mashup (won their first Grammy) or the 90's Dance Medley. Then watch The Wizard of Ahhs with Todrick Hall and Pentatonix..
It's such an impressive arrangement! The final "anywhere the wind blows" was Mitch, actually, but it's hard to see because the camera had zoomed out at that point.
Love to the reaction! If you ever watch them perform this live the megaphone was just a prop. Mitch did that part in the live version with his own voice
Isn’t this a phenomenal rendition of this iconic song. I’m so excited that I might hear this live tomorrow at their concert. Please do more weeks of Pentatonix. Love your commentary on them so much.
I must be old? I well remember the impact the original had when I was a student. If we were not talking about the music, it was the video. I don't think it would be possible to do a better a capella version than this.
That was just so full of awesomeness it's hard to follow everything going on! What a great tribute to Queen. Loved the number of homages laid out through out the video. Great reaction as always Jennifer!
A great cover and a great reaction! I am mesmerized by your total involvement, and love to hear the subtleties you bring to our attention. And for me personally, I appreciate your frequent pauses and technical commentary. I don't like it when reactors basically play the video through without value added, say "Oh wasn't that wonderful" and then ask me to like and subscribe.Thank you for another great reaction!!
I love listening to a reaction to Bohemian Rhapsody from someone who is familiar with Freddie, Queen, and this iconic original. When they also have an intricate knowledge of music and singing, well, that's just gravy! Such a great reaction. Thanks for all your informed input. Going back to check your vids from earlier in the week...
There really isn't anything new I can add to your phenomenal comments. I'm here for your exceptional reactions, your informative analyses, and your contagious joy. Looking forward to tomorrow's vid.
I don’t think you’ve seen this before. 😉 This arrangement and their performance deserves the attention it receives. Great job breaking things down, fun seeing your reactions, as usual. (At 10:34 were you thinking differentiate?) 😁 Well I guess I know what’s left. Definitely looking forward to day four. ❤
Love how you dissect the video and point out little things PTX does in their composition. The Mitch slap got you with the electric guitar, the Mitch Slaps and Kevin Kicks are what I live for. I implore you to watch it live or a live recording, even through a phone video/audio you can see the megaphone is just a prop.
3/4 down, excited for what's to come tomorrow to close out the week. I've rewatched your reactions so many times, sometimes I'm surprised when old stuff comes up you haven't seen. I'd say do a Voiceplay week, but I feel like you've locked those all down as they've come out. Have you explored much of Superfruit?
And because I have no seen you do it, you have absolutely got to react to Gary Valenciano singing the Al Jarreau classis "Spain" (by Chick Corea) on the Wish Bus. A total master class in singing. And a ton of fun!!!
Jennifer! And another one bites the dust! ( like that Queen reference? 😁 ) Not the first time Pentatonix has incorporated a couch in their production but it really got some mileage today! Such an iconic song with so much complexity and these guys do it full justice. Yet I have listened to this cover numerous times and still I learn from Jen's analysis. You have such a good ear for the little details! GREAT reaction and analysis as always Jennifer. 😊 And now with tomorrow being the final day I know what's coming! 😆
An amazing rendition from start to finish. None of it is easy to sing but there is one bit that shows the incredible talent and ability of all of them. That part is the tag, in particular the final resolve of the penultimate chord and how the resolve the chord. If you listen very carefully you will hear the resolve happen in parts. It is a 4 step resolve. Mitch is holding that lead note while the chord rotates. There is a split second where the chord doesn't quite "work". That is when Mitch's talent shines. Without even thinking about it, he raises his note 1/64 of a tone and then the final chord is complete in a way that only experienced a capella singers can manage.
This is one of the best songs they've ever done, musically speaking - and that's saying something. As good as they all are, and as amazing as the guitar solo is (legit voice only, the megaphone was just a prop, he didn't actually use it.), Kevin steals this entire song, for me. I've never heard any vocal percussionist (including Layne Stein of Voice Play and Adam Rupp of Home Free, two of the masters in the industry) "play" drums so realistically like that in a song. And the drums are the backbone of this song, all of its heart and soul are predicated on the pound and thump of the drums, even in the original. So for Kevin to KILL this with such PRECISION and perfection of sound absolutely steals this entire song. It's one of the most incredible things I've ever heard someone do with just their voice, it's an absolute mastery of lip and tongue tension, and breathing. I love this song, I love everything about it, it's by far the best version I've ever heard of it that wasn't Queen's themselves. And I'd argue it's right up there with the original. Freddie's voice is just so unique, you can't match that, even with the Godsent voice that is Mitch Grassi. But Mitch is so close to Freddie in tone and vocal quality, there's no one out there that can touch how close PTX comes to replicating the original. It's a master class.
I REALLY hope tomorrow is Imagine, but I suspect it will be The Prayer, which is utterly fantastic and technically insane of course, but even with their incredibly high bar, their Lennon cover sets the emotional mark for me.
You need to see one of their earliest videos in Daft Punk. It's completely different from everything you have seen so far and it shows you where they came from. If you really want to see where this group started, look up the television show The Sing Off. They competed on season 3.
I would love for you to react to some of Avi's solo music. His most popular is Change on the rise but there is a live version from Sunset Sound studios of When I'm a Fool that is so good. Thanks for the great analysis
Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. His PhD thesis a survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud" was published in 2007 and is a popular astronomy book of the same name. He started his research in 1970 and then stopped to run around the world in this rock band named Queen. Maybe you've heard of them maybe you haven't I had to Google them. That's sarcasm. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in the live performances. the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . The shot at the sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites. The part where Mitch is lying down on the couch and Kevin and Avi are walking beside it are to represent the pallbearers carrying Freddie's coffin . The shot at the end when they're looking up at the sky always puzzled me because there are four shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. They worked on this song for five or six years to get it where it is right now. This is a link to a live version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it was filmed off of somebody's phone. ruclips.net/video/C1PelJIxHTQ/видео.html There should be a video of them doing Bohemian Rhapsody from September 29th at the Hollywood Bowl. Check out PTX official or tea time with Travis and it'll be on either one of those
This is probably the craziest cover they have done. Its almost Voiceplay arrangement. Amazing like always but ususlly its a little ”less” if that makes sense 😂
As far as I know, Mitch doesn't need the megaphone for the "guitar solo", it was just a prop that happened to be available. Thanks for this reaction... one of my all time favourite songs, and since we don't have Freddy anymore, a helluva good second choice. :)
Great reaction! Guess I am a little slow on the uptake - I have seen this before and been amazed for sure! I just caught on to the homage they are paying specifically at the 18:02 mark (5:05 mark in the original video) to Dr Brian May, Queen's guitarist, who is an atstrophysicist -as they voice emulate Brian's guitar solo, they are showing the perseid meteor to the sound of his emulated guitar - that is genius!
Loved your reaction young lady! Besides learning more about music and how the voice works, I also learn new words. They may not be actual dictionary words but words none the less. I like to make up words too! You've made it to the top of my favorite reactors. I was number 415 to like this so 4+1+5-10 so you're a 10! Have a blessed day!
(This ended up being longer than when I started. Please bear with me!) As always, I love your reactions. Between your facial expressions and your commentary... you are just the BOMB. You mentioned the panning and 'engineering.' The left/right pans are almost exactly the same as Queen's. That struck me the first time I heard this, so I checked. I've been listening to PTX for a long time... WAY before I discovered reactions. BEFORE listening, I thought, "even the great PTX can't possibly do this song justice purely a cappella." WRONG!! Back to your reaction.... Your ear is better than mine, and I'm pretty snobby about having a good ear. I have an advantage over you on this particular piece because I must have listened to this (the PTX official version) critically dozens of times. You stopped and held your heart (and commented) the second time around with Avi's "any way the wind blows.' That was the original bass line (instrument versus vocal, obviously). You called out the harmonies in "Got to go" as nice! Interesting. The first several times I heard this, that deviation from the original actually bothered me. I got used to it pretty quick though. Now I accept and applaud it as the "PTX Twist." As someone mentioned, the megaphone is just a physical prop. It isn't functional. But WAY cool, right?? Your commentary during the "opera section" was perfect! And your obvious amazement (facial expressions) were so real and genuine! Amazing, right?? Then Mitch NAILS that A flat 5. (sigh). The "groovy" chord you mention fight after Scott's 'spit in my eye' is nearly the same chord as the accent used in the original. You interpreted the one part as 'collapsing and sleeping.' I thought it was echoing being shot (referencing "just shot a man") Watch the head snaps, especially from Kirsten and Mitch. As much as I enjoy ALL of your reactions, this one is clearly my VERY FAVORITE reaction that I have seen from you! I'm glad I'm a subscriber AND follower!
Please do Tim Minchin Prejudice Storm White wine in the Sun Confessions You'll love this mix.. Tim is so talented.. he wrote the musical for Matilda Or try Jesus Christ superstar Aussie producing he played Judas.. can really hear his range in that role

Punctuation is so important! One of my favorite reactions was the guy who heard "mama just killed a man" and thought that mama must be really bad ass.
Something that I think gets overlooked is Kevin during the "let him go" section is how deftly he switches from singing "let him go" with Kirstie and Scott, then immediately beatboxing for the response from Avi, Mitch and Scott. And that Scott is on both sides of the call and response in that section
The megaphone is just a prop to show who is doing the sound of the guitar, Mitch sounds exactly the same live without one.
Those bell tones at the beginning are mirroring Freddie's piano parts... very clever.. and difficult to keep them so precise.
In an interview years prior to finally making this video, when asked if there was a song they didn't think that they would attempt to do acapella, the answer was "Yes, Bohemian Rhapsody". Your analyses are so interesting and enjoyable, Jen!

Anyone else low-key impressed by Scott no-hands standing up from the couch from laying down at the end?
More than "low-key"... his ass wasn't even actually on the couch. I "kinda remember" being under forty... but that was a long, long time ago....
I just noticed that this time, and I have watched it many, many, many times. It looked like he stood up, in reverse of the way he plopped down.
Yeah, he pulled his legs back against the sofa which gave him the leverage to do that. Try it on your own sofa.
You don't cover a song this iconic unless you can absolutely slay it and they did. Even Brian May enjoyed this. It's probably the best cover Pentatonix has ever done.

Scott Rock is my fav type of Scott. All that power, and strength.

Their "My Favorite Things" is also a real kick. Of course, everything they do is fabulous...
Great reaction to this incredible Pentatonix video. Thank you. Props to Kirstin for jumping onto that couch while wearing heels.
Can we talk about standing on a couch in heels? That's tricky too.
If you do musical theater, then you will want to hear PTX cover of Waving Through a Window
Their first huge classic video, praised even by former Queen band members, this performance is just perfect in every way.

They are an amazing group of singers. It took them five years, that's five years to put that arrangement together. It is amazing music.
I LOVE this cover!
The visuals always make me think of a group of friends just hanging out listening to the song who start singing along and really getting into it.

The best rendition of this song I have ever heard. Just awesome!!??
Brian May, Queen's lead guitarist, posted a link to this on his Twitter account, saying simply, "This is great! Enjoy!"
Isn’t this a phenomenal rendition of this iconic song. I’m so excited that I might hear this live tomorrow at their concert. Please do more weeks of Pentatonix. Love your commentary on them so much.
Five musical savants; they really can sing anything, can't they? Love your break downs and reactions!
Hi Jenni, nice reaction.
Brian May posted the link to this video on his social media with the comment "Enjoy".
Greetings from Germany
Also, the scene with the shooting stars was a tribute to Brian May's involvement with Astronomy.
I really love how much detail you notice in the songs and the videos. It's awesome! ^_^
I must be old? I well remember the impact the original had when I was a student. If we were not talking about the music, it was the video.

They just released a live version of this. Mitch's voice and confidence has matured so much. And the guitar solo is ridiculous.
Hi Jennifer hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
I saw a vid where someone overlaid this video on top of the original and the timing of everything is absolutely identical!
I’m sure you already have this week planned out but my absolutely two favs live from PTX are my heart with you and run to you ❤️❤️❤️
Shout out to Kirsten for gracefully climbing and dancing in those cool shoes!
True pentatonix genius and perfection as always! You could see on their faces, that they were having a lot of fun performing this masterpiece! 😊
You couldn't forget the guitar solo.
I don’t think you’ve seen this before. 😉
This arrangement and their performance deserves the attention it receives. Great job breaking things down, fun seeing your reactions, as usual. (At 10:34 were you thinking differentiate?) 😁
Well I guess I know what’s left. Definitely looking forward to day four. ❤
Haha that’s the one!!! Thank you😁
Classic song, nice arrangement. Great analysis!! Thanks Jen!!
Thank you so much maam jinnefer for having this reaction. Keep up your nice reactions and analysis i really liked it.
Wonderful reaction. Perfect mix (I accidentaly wrote Mitch at first....) of fangirling and informative!
This daily dose has been amazing👌 I hope you check out their cover of Imagine. So beautiful, the music obviously, but the video is lovely too.
Can't wait for tomorrow!
And because I have no seen you do it, you have absolutely got to react to Gary Valenciano singing the Al Jarreau classis "Spain" (by Chick Corea) on the Wish Bus. A total master class in singing. And a ton of fun!!!
My favorite Ptx cover is Hallelujah. Epic.
This is not at all important to the actual song, but did you notice that Avi doesn't blink for the entirety of the flashlight section? XD
Thank you!!! Such a fun and impressive piece! And yes you do 😱
An amazing rendition from start to finish.
What a warm lovely presentation and yet such a detailed reaction! Enjoyed it thoroughly.
Thank you😁
Hello Jennifer, Thanks for this reaction. Pentatonix excels again.
There's no way you could've seen this and forgotten about it.
I REALLY hope tomorrow is Imagine, but I suspect it will be The Prayer, which is utterly fantastic and technically insane of course, but even with their incredibly high bar, their Lennon cover sets the emotional mark for me.
The Prayer is up on my channel 😊
@@JenniferGlatzhofer Goes to watch immediately despite seeming to claim to prefer another one!
From the very beginning I was waiting for @9:48 😄
It was so hard not to fast forward to this moment, but I made it!
Thanks for great reaction! ❤
Kirstie was Great on Broadway. Mitch would be an Absolute Legend on Broadway. Actually, I wish Pentonix would do a "residency" there!
It was 5 years in the rehersing and making!
I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there
are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. They worked on this song for five or six years to get it where it is right now.
This is a link to a live version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it was filmed off of somebody's phone.
ruclips.net/video/C1PelJIxHTQ/видео.html
There should be a video of them doing Bohemian Rhapsody from September 29th at the Hollywood Bowl. Check out PTX official or tea time with Travis and it'll be on either one of those
I love when Jen tries to sing bass 😂😂
There is a behind the scenes video of the making of this that is interesting.
This is probably the craziest cover they have done. Its almost Voiceplay arrangement.
Amazing like always but ususlly its a little ”less” if that makes sense 😂
This song shows Avi's opera training well.
As far as I know, Mitch doesn't need the megaphone for the "guitar solo", it was just a prop that happened to be available.
Thanks for this reaction... one of my all time favourite songs, and since we don't have Freddy anymore, a helluva good second choice. :)
Hi Jennifer.
You Got to do a reaction video on Voctave - Where are you Christmas? Your mind is gonna be blown away.
I recommend one sweet day by budakhel and weak by daryl ong and kyla by the way maam im from the philippines.
Great reaction! Guess I am a little slow on the uptake - I have seen this before and been amazed for sure! I just caught on to the homage they are paying specifically at the 18:02 mark (5:05 mark in the original video) to Dr Brian May, Queen's guitarist, who is an atstrophysicist -as they voice emulate Brian's guitar solo, they are showing the perseid meteor to the sound of his emulated guitar - that is genius!
me encanta tu reacción eres tan espontánea, saludos
Check out Homefree “ friends in low places!”
😂 thank you ahah
You should check out the Acapop! Kids version of this too! It's an kids Acapella group founded by Scott
Hey Jen i m so happy you react to this song very great reaction
Can you react to voiceplay Queen in 5 min please 🥺
Landslide….and the slide down..
If you love harmonies...listen to
O'G3NE. They also do a cover of this song that is fabulous.
Thank you!
MORE OF AVIII , HI IS GORGEOUS
during live performances, Mitch does not use megaphone
YELL BACK.
"This sounds... off." Nice Valley Girl impression! :)
Mega phone is just a prop, mitch can make that guitar sound with just his voice
Hi Jen it is me again thank you much
The megaphone is a prop. Mitch does it live without it.
Really miss Avi as bass. Being a bass player, I think he is the best of all the bass singers in that role.
Please do Tim Minchin
Prejudice
Storm
White wine in the Sun

You'll love this mix.. Tim is so talented.. he wrote the musical for Matilda
Or try Jesus Christ superstar Aussie producing he played Judas.. can really hear his range in that role
