And what always amazes me (this time was no exception) is that Mitch sings the same note as Kirstie. Not an octave lower. THE SAME NOTE. What a talented way to use a God-given gift to its fullest. Their arrangements are wonderful display cases of what you can do when you are very good at your craft.
This video was my first exposure to PTX and I was immediately hooked. As a Canadian, this song has always held a special place in my heart. Not only is it amazing in its own right, but was written by a Canadian. I never in a million years thought I'd hear anyone do it as well as k d lang. This was different, but easily as good. Thank you, Jen for this reaction!
Yes!! k.d. lang's performance was breathtaking as well. She left it all out there on the stage. It is a masterpiece. And PTX have crafted their own masterpiece with this arrangement as well.
Something that always hits me but no one really comments on (because of Kirstin's breathtaking performance) is Scott's BG vocals during her solo somehow hit so hard yet are so subtle the contrast buoy's her lead so beautifully. Their arrangement is just so very (I guess, I don't have the words) beyond description. Plus, Avi's performance simply makes me weep, admittedly I do cry easily with beautiful music, every note Avi hits just echo's in my soul. When he comes is under Mitch, and on through the wall of sound, just draws out all the emotions.
The backing vocals are incredible in this. And speaking of Avi, his massive baseline during Scott's solo part continues during Avi's solo part, but it's continued by Scott. That handoff between Avi and Scott is seamless. And they do it live as well, so it's not Avi doubling himself. I'm amazed on how Scott can do the emotional solo line and then just suddenly drop into Avi's territory as a backing vocal. Incredible vocal range and agility :)
PTX was my hook into professional acapella music, and I'm very grateful to them for that! This is a beautiful interpretation of the song, and a great review by Jen always makes me appreciate it even more! Thanks Jen!
Kirsten sang with ever increasing emotion, which peaked near the end of her solo. It seemed to me as though her voice would crack from the intensity of her feelings. But not only was there no break but she sang the finale of her solo with heartbreaking clarity and smoothness. Stunning.
I too thought you had already done this one but a quick look through your playlists and it isn't there. This has to be one of the best versions I have heard in a long time.
My best advice is to listen to this song and focus 100% on what Avi is doing the whole time - it gives you a whole different experience - like another dimension!
When I say I've listened to this version several hundred times, it's no exaggeration. I get chills, and full fledged shivers in this one and also in their Amazing Grace(My Chains Are Gone) videos. Generally speaking my favorite a capella group is Home Free, but that's not to take anything away from Pentatonix or Voice Play. They each have such talent and certain songs that just gut punch you they're so good. As usual, loved your breakdown! ❤
I still tear up a little every time I see this video. This and Mary Did You Know are what I consider their most moving songs. I can't remember if you watched that or not, but please do if you haven't.
Probably my favorite Pentatonix cover, although there are several close seconds. What a nice surprise to see this reaction today! Great reaction and analysis. ❤ I see that several others in the comments have suggested the Pentatonix cover of Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone. I completely agree! Amazing Grace, a beautifully written hymn with an incredible story behind it’s origins, combined with the newer worship song My Chains Are Gone, with these five voices is just stunning.
One of the best analysis/reactors out there, you always do a great job Jennifer!!! Avi does it in the live as well that head shake thing. Kirstie(like thirsty) has just such a bright tone. piano check time!! PS always, always love the geek out vocally!!!
Hey Jen, my name is Dan. You are quite possibly my favorite reaction video person ever, especially in regards to acapella groups such as Home Free and PTX. Your attention to every detail and vocal nuance that occurs in a particular performance is spot on! And your personality is just so very charming! Well done! Keep it up!!
Great job Jen. I'm so glad you didn't have to cover the screen due to copyright issues. A lot of reactors have copyright blocks with Pentatonix and some people do is they cover the video screen. But again, loved your reaction and analysis, and your silliness as always!
In the spirit of a capella fan boying, I am a Home Free guy. However to my untrained ear and easily impressed eye, this cover of Hallaleujuah is the gold standard of a capella group videos (followed not that closely by HF's Thinking Out Loud/Let's Get it On).
Thanks for another great reaction! I enjoy the way you pause, make a point, then run it back (sometimes several times) to ensure we understand the technical excellence you are describing.
I find it AMAZING that you've never audited this song before on your channel. I try to listen to almost every reaction to it someone posts, and you're one of my favorite reactors, so I was delighted to find this posted and to see that it was TODAY that you posted it. You're a real joy to watch, both because of your in depth analysis AND your marvelous sense of humor. I can't remember who it was, but there was one reactor who was so bad I shut his video down after 3 minutes - he literally complained that he didn't like them because they were "too good." One of the other commenters amused me by posting that it was the "most unique criticism" he'd ever read about them. And no, that wasn't his only negative remark. I simply posted that if he disliked this video, then I couldn't imagine him watching anything I would like and good luck with his channel but sayonara. Looking over your catalog, I am frankly astonished to find only FOUR Pentatonix videos in the mix. But you have 18 VoicePlay and 19 Home Free, along with seven just for Geoff (though his playlist shows six, your "reactions" collection includes seven). I love all three groups pretty much equally, though I'm not particularly a country music fan so Home Free comes in third. So, since you like Halloween, I'd like to recommend you react to Pentatonix performing "Making Christmas" (from "The Nightmare Before Christmas." VP has done a number of covers from this movie which are great, but the PTX cover is just fabulous, PLUS it displays a sense of humor that they don't often get to show. And Mitch's "evil laugh" is worth the price of admission, all by itself. (p.s., if you're one of those who've never seen the movie, please do before you react to make it more enjoyable for you. One recent reactor had no clue what was going on and it rather spoiled his reaction. He was too bewildered to enjoy the music, even.)
Reactors seem to ignore the empty spaces Pentatonix places in this song. The black screen and total silence are perfectly placed at spots to add to the natural build that culminates in Mitch's solo.
So glad you reacted to this version of Hallelujah. PTX does this so well. Hope you and your loved ones are doing well. Looking forward to your next video.
Beautiful song, beautiful version, beautiful reaction and analysis. Now you should go and watch their live performance to realize they sound pretty much the same!
Despite having played clarinet for many years, I still consider myself something of a musical layman. When it comes to singing....even more so. I've always - since I can remember - held a very deep appreciation for beautifully composed/arranged/performed music but the way you break things down is, I feel, only deepening that appreciation even further. You explain everything in such clear terms that even I can understand what you're getting at...and you're utterly charming, to boot. So thank you.
Never get tired of your reaction & ANALYSIS videos...i love the analysis part. You continue to be one of the best vocal coaches on RUclips who doesn't just merely sing-along like you're trying to compete against the people you're reacting too. Keep it up!!!
Thanks for getting to this one! It's such a PTX classic, and one of the last great songs they recorded with Avi. His bass line was so critical in the final "wall of sound" chorus, I was hoping you would break that down for us, but I get that there's always so much going on in a Pentatonix video, it's hard to get to it all. Great reaction. Love your detailed analysis. Subbed for more PTX.
It's funny that you mentioned that Avi is singing high for him since he has a 4-octave range (give or take a semi-tone or two). Wonderful reaction/analysis as usual!
16:56: Yeah, in the "Recording of Evergreens" I've also seen, that for Mitch it's sometimes the opposite :D He has to dial back a bit, otherwise he would drown out everything, others, our headphones and eardrums etc. :D He literally says "I'll be so loud"
As a subscriber, I have listened to a TON of your reactions. I didn't realize you hadn't reacted to PTX's biggest song ever! You are perfectly welcome to be 'late to the party!' As always, your reactions teach me stuff! As many times as you have reacted to PTX, you experienced a serious Mitch Slap in this! Great reaction!
❤ AWESOME 🤩 reaction Jen ❤. U r my favourite 😍 reactor. U r just AWESOME 🤩. I love 💗 love 💗 love ur accent. U r funny 😄 and do the best break down and u r so positive and happy 😊. BUT ur face during the reaction is just priceless 😮. U lift me up when I am down 😢. Love ❤️ from Australia 🇦🇺
Each of the big three A Capella groups (PTX, Home Free, VoicePlay) seems to have a "signature" song that identifies and shows their greatness. To me, this is the PTX "signature" song. It doesn't matter that I've heard this song at least a 100 times, or that I was a part of a performance featuring this song, I never fail to get goosebumps and an intense emotional reaction. This performance is almost a religious experience.
@@KitKatyKath Home Free...Ring of Fire, though Man of Constant Sorrow is really close. They won their national contest with it, and it shows a lot of what the group can do without over-featuring any one member. VoicePlay...without any "featuring" I'd say "Oogie Boogie Song" though that does let Geoff outshine the group. With a guest, I'll say "Hoist the Colors". My favs are an entirely different matter: PTX - I absolutely love "Mary did you Know". Home Free - Got to be "American Pie". VoicePlay - "Dream On"
The amazing thing to me is the complexity of these arrangements and how perfectly each of them tuned the chords. Each verse is its own arrangement to allow for the different members singing the lead. Likewise, each chorus is a distinct arrangement, each with its own beauty. Mitch knows how to rip the heart out of your chest and then rebuild a better version of yourself.
Actually PTX has two live versions up. One with Avi from about the same timeframe as this, and a 2021 version with Matt. In the older version, you can actually see where Avi seamlessly hands off the bassline to Scott just before his solo.
It surprised that you didn't mention the bass line during Avi's lead. It was Scott covering that role very well, thank you! His ability to do this is too often overlooked
There has been a lot of debate about this in the past. It's true that Scott covers the bass vocals during live performances, but for this recording Avi was double tracked for his verse.
I've listened to this version of song hundreds of times and I still get goosebumps every single time. Went through a period where my newborn would only fall asleep to this song, so I might have even listened to it thousands of times 😂
As usual, you have really provided a on point analysis for a great song. You were right to say this has been around a while - a Pentatonix classic if you were to ask me... Many others have reacted to this and I would encourage you to check out The Fairy Voice Mother as one of the best analysis. I think your effort definitely matches hers. Also, there is an Italian guy named Roberto delli Carri who also provided a great analysis. I encourage you to check them out, but I also don't want it to seem that I didn't appreciate yours (as I've already said) because one of the reasons I am a subscriber and continually come back to you is the excellent vocal breakdown you always provide. Love what you do Jen, please keep it up!
It’s definitely worth checking out their live version of this. It’s an incredible arrangement. Also, Avi’s bass runs at the end come through a bit better.
If you have a bit of time, listen to the part from 9:34 all the way up, and focus on the backsinging instead of Kirsty. It's incredible what they do to support her on the rise up. It's the best part in my opinion, because the first few times you don't really hear it - but they are really doing SO much, to support the effect that her rise has. Like, the final: On the "it's a cold and it's a..." they sing a low rising phrase, then the "...broken..." - and on that broken, almost an inversion takes place! they ALL go up with their voices in that gap, changing the tone and bringing the final effect up to 1000x - "...hallelujah!" SO much happens during those few seconds, I can't believe it!
Generally, the song "Hallelujah" is different in that aspect. Of course, I always hear all the harmonies and backings, but in "Hallelujah", I really had to go back a lot of times after I already knew the solos (that are of course at the front), and understand what happens here. What the others are doing is SO complex! During Mitch's part too! I find it so incredible, that those aren't just background harmonies, but they match so perfectly and individually, note by note, to the front singer in that moment. I haven't seen that on that level in any other song.
Yeah - at 18:31 you can hear it: They're doing exactly the same thing with Mitch again. "it's a cold and it's a..." - low rise - "...broken..." there that what I feel like an "inversion effect" happens, they're all going up - "...Hallelujah!" has the maximum effect, with the slight dissonance.
Hi Jen, I often suggest people to jump from this to their cover of Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) with their new bass, Kevin just to hear how all their voices have progressed over the years ... Kirsties vibrato is incredible for Amazing Grace
Jennifer! Yes this one is one of my favorite Pentatonix covers, though honestly if you wanted to do another week and focus on one artist/group you could find plenty of good Pentatonix candidates to react to. Pentatonix was my first exposure to true a cappella groups and it's been a lovely ride through them and the others ever since. A test! I knew you were going to test us one day! 😁 I might have partially passed, partially failed 😬 but it just means I need to watch even more Jennifer videos to get it down. They did different things with the word "hallelujah" in this one. Early on the lead would sing "halle" and then be joined chorally by the rest on "lujah". Then later as you point out there is the overlapping call/response effect. Just so many artistic details they build into their music that makes it so rich and ... uh ... yummy to listen to. Great reaction/analysis as always Jen! 😊
Hi Jen! About time you got around to this one! LOL This was also my first exposure to PTX and the whole acapella genre (during lockdown!) - still hoping to see them @ the Apollo in May, it was postponed twice..! They just get better and better, Mary Did You Know was amazing - and The Prayer blew me away!😍
Shortly before he passed, Leonard Cohen the gentleman who wrote the song, heard Pentatonix's cover of Hallelujah. He said it was the best cover of his song he had ever heard.. to date they have 683 million views. There is a live version of Hallelujah from their concert at the Hollywood Bowl on September 29th. I got to go to the concert in it was magical. So that would be the most current version of Hallelujah. I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction
If you want another of their early hits, the Radioactive with Lindsey Stirling is one of my favs. I've never actually liked the song 🤣 but their performance is great!
Great reaction. Thank you. They are amazing. Her name is Kirstin, not kristin. (sounds like Kur stin, not Kris tin), There has only been one member change in Pentatonix 11-year history. Avi left in 2017 and Matt became their bass October 2017. The other four are original members.
Yesterday I turned on this song to a friend, when Mitch started singing, he was shocked especially when I told him it was a man singing and he thought it was a woman, his face was something beautiful 🤣🤣
I love that Scott is doing the bass while Avi is singing. They are all so versatile. Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) is such a great belter. I hope you can react to their new snippet of "Joy to the World" which announces their Holiday tour this winter and a song from their new album coming out at the end of October called "Prayers for this World".
Disclaimer: This is a reaction video, and as most reactors tend to go on about things I don't particularly care about from time to time, there will be fast-forwarding during the video.
Like so many this song was my introduction to ptx. And I heard it first before I saw the video so I was shocked to discover mitch was a dude. He is absolutely my fave ptx singer. This is also one of my favorite songs from way before Shrek. So many think it's religious when it so is not and that's what drew me at first. No offense to the other acapella groups out there like home free but to me there's every other group here and ptx way above on their own level. There just isn't anyone that even remotely touches them in my opinion. And considering they're by far the most popular and most decorated and the reason acapella is in the main stream now, id say all other acapella groups owes them a thank u bc doubtful none would have had half the success they do without these guys paving the way.
You mentioned belting, and I have to say that Kirsten may be one of the best belters I have heard in my life. And while we are on bests. I don't think I have ever heard a better beat box artist than Kevin. But that is, of course, just my opinion.
Scott covering the bass when Avi is taking the lead is always a wonderful surprise (not really a surprise)! Thanks for reacting to this one!
I knew you were gonna be floored by Mitch's part after your reaction to Kirstens. Hes almost not human.
And what always amazes me (this time was no exception) is that Mitch sings the same note as Kirstie. Not an octave lower. THE SAME NOTE. What a talented way to use a God-given gift to its fullest. Their arrangements are wonderful display cases of what you can do when you are very good at your craft.
Mitch is half human, half angel.
This video was my first exposure to PTX and I was immediately hooked. As a Canadian, this song has always held a special place in my heart. Yes!! k.d. lang's performance was breathtaking as well. She left it all out there on the stage. It is a masterpiece.
And PTX have crafted their own masterpiece with this arrangement as well.
One of the most memorable moments from that Olympics games in Canada.
I agree. This started my own rabbit hole. It annoys my kiddos to no end!
Something that always hits me but no one really comments on (because of Kirstin's breathtaking performance) is Scott's BG vocals during her solo somehow hit so hard yet are so subtle the contrast buoy's her lead so beautifully. Love this live performance. It is, in Scott's terms, "Iconic" to the core
The producer deserves a standing ovation 👏🏻
Vocal coaches, composers, musicians are my favorite reactors! I love the teaching!
That final B1b from Avi always gives me chills!
Great Mitch Slap at 16:08 great when it's a person who knows Pentatonix. Great breakdown of the song, keep doing the great reactions.
PTX was my hook into professional acapella music, and I'm very grateful to them for that! This is a beautiful interpretation of the song, and a great review by Jen always makes me appreciate it even more! Thanks Jen!
Thank you!!
Scott being able to sing his opening solo part, and then easily step in to cover the bass line while Avi solos is so awesome.
And Avi going the opposite along with a beautiful humming b flat 1 at the end
Kirsten sang with ever increasing emotion, which peaked near the end of her solo. It seemed to me as though her voice would crack from the intensity of her feelings. But not only was there no break but she sang the finale of her solo with heartbreaking clarity and smoothness. Stunning.

It's unreal how good they are. Kristen's voice even hear hums are like an angel
I get ALL the chills whenever I hear this version.
I still tear up a little every time I see this video. This and Mary Did You Know are what I consider their most moving songs. I can't remember if you watched that or not, but please do if you haven't.
This was my introduction to Pentatonix & it still blows me away & brings makes me teary. Great reaction & explanation of their talents.
thank you for this Jenn .. this was my first introduction to Pentatonix ... really enjoyed your analysis ..
I love your breakdowns and explanations of what we are listening to. Helps me appreciate the song even more. Can't wait for more PTX reactions!

One of their top five covers. Thank you so very much for analyzing this one. It s one of my favs and you always point out things I never noticed.
Thank you!!
They crush this, I love Little Drummer Boy. That song was my first experience of PTX.
Just now seeing you today.
If you'd watched this before .. you would have remembered it!
It's Perfect.
And that's so very rare!
Hey Jen, my name is Dan. You are quite possibly my favorite reaction video person ever, especially in regards to acapella groups such as Home Free and PTX. Hi Jen, A great reaction video, you need to have a look at their cover of "Mary did you Know". The setting is fantastic for their voices.
Thanks for another great reaction! I enjoy the way you pause, make a point, then run it back (sometimes several times) to ensure we understand the technical excellence you are describing.

Never get tired of your reaction & ANALYSIS videos...i love the analysis part. You continue to be one of the best vocal coaches on RUclips who doesn't just merely sing-along like you're trying to compete against the people you're reacting too. Keep it up!!!
Ah thank you 😁
I never heard this cover until a few months ago. Completely blown away.
When Avi sings "her beauty" note the camera shifts to Kirsten.
Lol I must say I have always meant to ask about this one XD but so glad you've done it now champagne video to help me deal with the masses at work ;-)

Just found your channel.
Love this Pentatonix song and you're facial expressions are great to watch. Mitch's voice is just mind blowing.
I love Kirstin's emphasis on "love" - it's soooo much like her person, those smirky kind of punches. God I love them! Loving your analyses as well!
I love pentatonix ❤❤❤❤ thanks of France
I wish I could hear them in person again, and hear how Matt sings some of the songs Avi was so prominent in, like this one.
After the last soaring crest that ending just sets you down so easy.

One of my favorite song covers from Pentatonix. I get Mitchslapped every time.
This was also my first contact with PTX. It‘s kind of strange that it took you so long to react to it - but I enjoyed it very much!
I've listened to this version of song hundreds of times and I still get goosebumps every single time.
Went through a period where my newborn would only fall asleep to this song, so I might have even listened to it thousands of times 😂
Pentatonix has a cover of "Sound of Silence" that is amazing. Not sure if you've done that one yet. If not, definitely add it to the top of the list.
Love your assesment of this song and group. This song is a favorite of mine so I listen to alot of versions. Love your reactions. ;)
Glorious reaction Jen!
Thank you!
The way that Mitch enunciate his words is amazing
Thanks so much! I will check them out 😁
I loved Roberto's analysis of this, and also Amazing Grace. However, it seems he's done no more reactions since? Which is very sad.
Best reaction from vocal coaches I’ve seen. Instant sub
It’s definitely worth checking out their live version of this. It’s an incredible arrangement.
Also, Avi’s bass runs at the end come through a bit better.
Just an observation. Did you notice that the higher Mitch seemed to go, the deeper Avi would go, almost in counterbalance to Mitch.
Matt is the new bass. Kevin is the beat boxer, and he's been with them since the beginning.
@@gregsteele806 My mistake, it was late at night when I posted, so ... oops
@@steveeverett1736 It happens. No worries
Love your Videos ❤ you have such a great personality! Greetings from Germany, Franziska
They just performed this live at the Hollywood Bowl a few days ago. You can find this online.
Just gorgeous ❤️🙌🙌
I love your expressions every time you listen to or even see Avi
Hi
me encantan tus reacciones, tus expresiones jajaja ...😊
I would love to see you react to some of Avi’s solo music! Change on the rise is great and have so many layers, all of them done by him.
Jennifer, I do listen to what you say. Sometimes, I even understand.
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction
there's no evidence this ever happened. urban legend I'm afraid
No, that's not true
this is my favourite version of this amazing song.
The second verse uses a guitar-like arpeggio as nod to the jeff buckley's version i think.
Recommend highLy their takes on Mary Did You Know and Amazing Grace
This is one of those videos that you remember. The moment you said you didn't, I thought...nah, this will be new to you.
This is amazing!
Yesterday I turned on this song to a friend, when Mitch started singing, he was shocked especially when I told him it was a man singing and he thought it was a woman, his face was something beautiful 🤣🤣
“…love ..” is pure Texas, she nailed it.
Cool review as always
When Avi is singing his special, Scott has the range to sing bass for him.
You should check out the live version. They don't sound any different but it's always amazing to see how good they sound live.
Hahaha I love in 2022 there are still people getting mind blown by this group.
Watch their live performance of this it sounds almost exactly the same (there s some audience noise)
You mentioned belting, and I have to say that Kirsten may be one of the best belters I have heard in my life. And while we are on bests. I don't think I have ever heard a better beat box artist than Kevin. But that is, of course, just my opinion.
I love Kirstan's crooked smile to pitch her voice.
