A brief introduction to Pentatonix (aka PTX):
A five member acapella (no instrument) group.
They sing covers of pop songs and have several Christmas albums in their catalog.
They've also put out two albums of original material, one just released February 12, 2021 (The Lucky Ones).
The original five band members were Scott, Kirstin (Kirstie), Mitch, Kevin and Avi.
Scott, Kirstin and Mitch knew each other from high school in Arlington, Texas. They formed the group in 2011, adding Avi (bass) and Kevin (beatboxer).
They auditioned, competed and won season 3 of the television show The Sing-Off.
They've also won multiple awards over the years including three Grammys.
While viewing PTX videos spanning a decade, it may appear that there has been several personel changes due to their ever-changing appearances, Kirstin and Mitch in particular. The fact is; only one member has changed.
Of the five original members, four are still in the group. Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced with Matt.
While acappella since forming the group, they occasionally introduce instruments such as piano (played by Scott) and cello (played by Kevin). They've also included vocals and instrumentals played by featured guests.
Most of their 'instrumental' sounds however, are created by Kevin, their very talented beatboxer along with baselines performed by Avi, Matt and Scott.
While performing together as a five-member group, they also have individual works worth investigating.
There's so much more information 'Penta-holics' can add to this list. Just ask and they will respond. Enjoy!

No instruments FOR THE MOST PART. They HAVE performed with Kevin's Cello and they have collaborated with at least one person who used an instrument (Lindsey Stirling; there may be others as well). But it is VERY RARE that any instrument is used besides their own voices or bodies.

Congratulations on discovering the best a Capella group ever. Its never too late. Excellent reaction. This band is just out of this world talented and everything they do is brilliant. They are musical geniuses. The entire band met right before a televised singing competition in 2011 called the Sing Off. The tall blonde baritone is Scott Hoying, the mezzo soprano is Kirsten (Kirstie) Maldonado and the counter tenor (lead in this one) is Mitch Grassi. The three of them grew up together in Texas. Right before the singing competition they met the man with the beard who is a basso profundo through reputation and friends. His name is Avi (pronounced Aahh Vee) Kaplan. He is my personal favorite. His warm lows are not only the foundation but when he sings he lends an emotion like no other. Quickly after that they found the beatboxer/cello player (cello boxer) on youtube. He was preparing for premed at Yale but felt this was his calling instead. They competed on season 3 of the Sing Off and won. They were given a contract with Sony but shortly after Sony dropped them(I'm sure Sony regretted that for a long time). They began performing on youtube and received another contract. Things took off from there and they are a huge success. Please listen to Hallelujah. It has over 615 million views. This band does not focus on one soloist/lead. They each have their moments to shine and they support one another 100%. Not one ego over another. They are so diverse and yet when they combine their voices the harmonies are beautiful beyond belief. Avi left the band late 2017 due to a family medical matter and personal reasons. He left on good terms and they are friends today. Avi helped the band find his replacement and now has a sensational solo career. They have 3 Grammy wins from their earlier years with Avi. The first win is Daft Punk, the second is Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the third from a collaboration with Dolly Pardon of Jolene. Again, would suggest reacting to Hallelujah, Imagine, Rather be, Love Again(original written by Avi and Kevin), Say Something and so many more. Thank you for this reaction. Hope you will continue down the rabbit hole of Pentatonix. The PTX fans, call themselves the Pentaholics, are amazing and will support you all the way. Have fun!!! :)

Actually, Kevin had already graduated pre-med from Yale when he met the group. He was planning to go to the Berklee School of Music in Boston to earn a master's degree in music, then on to medical school after that. And it was actually Sony that re-signed them eight months after initially dropping them. 18 months after that, they bumped them up from the small Madison Gate label to the major RCA label after Daft Punk won them their first Grammy and became a world-wide smash hit. Avi was involved in the early audition process for finding his replacement, but he had actually departed before Matt was signed to the group. And, unfortunately, his departure from the group wasn't quite as amicable as many have made it out to be after the lawyers got involved. He and Kevin remain close friends (Avi was part of Kevin's wedding), but he is no longer in contact with any of the other group members.

Mitch (the one who sang lead on this one) has a 6 octave range. He is a true counter tenor. Scott the blond is a baritone, but can sing in the tenor range and also covers the bass when the base singer is soloing. Kirstie( rhymes with thirsty) is the female member. She is a mezzo soprano. Kevin is the beat boxer. He also plays the cello while beat boxing. He is a tenor. Avi the bass is actually a trained basso profondo.

They've won (so far) three Grammys. When listening, keep in mind that whenever you *think* you hear instruments ... it's actually *them!* The only exception would be on those rare occasions when their 'beat-boxer' [he supplies 90+% of the percussion you hear] Kevin O. (also a master cellist) brings in his cello for a piece!
To blow your mind once again, check out their cover of "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies" ... and keep in mind that you'll be experiencing an *instrumental piece* of music, performed by a voice-only group, *without any instruments!* 😳 ‼

Three-time GrammyAward-winning and multi-platinum-selling artist Pentatonix (presently comprised of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee) . A freshman at The University of Southern California, Scott decided to audition for the show and enlisted childhood friends and fellow Arlington, Texas-natives Kirstie and Mitch. As a high school vocal trio, they had found success both locally and online thanks to their cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone." Determined to add depth and a distinctive dynamic to the group, Scott set out to add more vocalists, first adding Avi, who'd built himself a reputation as one of the most talented vocal basses in Southern California, and eventually took to RUclips where he found the video for "Julie-O," featuring Kevin's cello-boxing (simultaneously beatboxing and performing the song on his cello).
Finally, a fully formed group, Pentatonix perfected their sound (and their chemistry) throughout the season, naturally developing a signature style and a knack for arranging songs that pulled equally from the five individuals' strengths. Despite drawing from a dizzyingly eclectic set of musical genres - the group cites pop, jazz, r&b, indie, folk, dubstep and electronica as just a few of their inspirations.

Yes, they are an a capella group. All instrument sounds you hear are their voices. Their name Pentatonix is a riff on the musical pentatonic scale. They changed the c to an x and there are 5 members, which fits the penta in pentatonic(x) scale. The members in this are: Mitch, countertenor, main lead in this song and first solo; Scott, baritone, tall blond; Kirstin or Kirstie, mezzo soprano, the girl; (those 3 grew up in Texas and attended school and choir together from around the age of 10 and often referred to as the trio); Kevin, beatboxer and tenor, also massively talented in many other areas; and Avi, bass, guy with the beard. Avi left the group at the end of 2017 amicably and was replaced by Matt. You will see Matt in later videos. The other 4 members have remained the same. The group got their start on an American reality competition show for a capella groups. They entered and WON the 3rd season of the show called The Sing-off. This group is widely considered the best acapella group in the world and they have really changed how a capella is viewed now.
They have not done a single song/video that is anything less than great. Often their covers exceed the originals. Pick anything to react and you will likely not be disappointed. Welcome to the very deep rabbit hole of discovering Pentatonix. Us fans are called Pentaholics. Some of my favorite recommendations are: Imagine, Sound of Silence, Hallelujah, Daft Punk (they won their 1st Grammy for this), Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (2nd Grammy), Jolene feat. Dolly Parton (3rd Grammy), Sing, Come Along, Say Something, plus so many songs from their Christmas albums. They also have a lot of originals to peruse. They have literally hundreds of songs and videos to choose. Enjoy the journey!

[They're coming back to Europe in 2022... So you'd have to look back a the ticketsales.]
Welcome to the pentatonix fandom, we are called 'pentaholics'. We're all very loyal and always willing to awser any questions about the group you may have.
Some of the questions I picked up on and will gladly awnser to the best of my ability:
When did they form: as a five person group, they formed in 2010/2011 for the sing-off. The three original members: Scott, Mitch and Kirstin know eachother since highschool. They were in musical theater together. When Scott went to college he joined his college acapella group. When he read about a competition called 'the sing off' looking for new contestants, he wanted to get his original group together to give it a try. But bc the show had a 5 person group requirement they had to look for 2 more members. They found Avi through a mutual friend (their current producer Ben Bram) and Kevin they found bacause of this viral RUclips video of him 'celloboxing' (combining beatbox with cello). Their first audition day on the sing off was also the first day of all of them meeting eachother. They were the smallest group of the competition and had to go against all of theses gigantic 10+ person vocal groups. (All of the performances of their sing off days are still available here on RUclips)
Spoiler alert (but also not really, because we're talking about pentatonix here): they won the whole thing and got a contract with a record label. That same label dropped them a year later, they didn't see a future in acapella and the members of PTX were told they'd fails if they continued with that genre. They started over on their own RUclips channel and found their current label, RCA. The rest is history. ( I can write more, but its already so much info)
Are they all american: yes! Although they were all born and raised in The USA, their group has a lot of different ethnicities such as Latin American, Italian and Nigerian.
I hope to see more pentatonix reactions from you two, you are lovely!

Pentatonix is a fantastic acapella group!! One of the best if not THE best!! Their Hallelujah cover is perfection and very moving!! Love their sound!! I'm asking you to react to an artist that is truly incredible and one of the best if not THE best female vocalist on this planet today!!! Her name is Morissette Amon. She just turned 25 y/o. She's from the Phillipines and she has a vocal range that compares to none. She's extremely humble; she sings effortlessly because she loves to sing. She becomes the song and is a beautiful "story teller" as she sings. She covers a lot of Broadway songs but she sings every genre of music there is; Pop, R&B, Broadway, Rap (not MY fave, however), Country, Christian music (I don't think I've left anything out). She does cover Bohemian Rhapsody and it shows she could easily sing opera, if she desired. Please react to this beautiful young lady. Morissette has a fan base that has grown exponentially since I first listened to her 3 years ago, on You Tube. So will your fan base, I promise, when her fans (myself included) find you're reacting to her!! I'll suggest, first, for you a song, done live, on the Wish Bus. Akin Ka Na Lang. This is in her native language and it's extraordinary. Most of her covers are in English. You won't regret listening and you WILL be astounded!! I'm 67 years old, American and she's my favorite singer in the world!! I know what beautiful voices sound like and she has a voice that is God given. Thank you for this reaction and I will look each day for you to react to Asia's Phoenix, Morissette Amon.

Pentatonix won the second season of the American TV show Sing Off (if you get a chance watch episode 10. You won't regret it). Scott, tall blonde baritone, Mitch, short brunette contra tenor, and Kirsten, blond mezzo-soprano grew up together in Arlington, Texas. They entered Sing Off hoping to get some exposure and maybe some notice by a record label. It wasn't until a few days before audition that Scott found out that the minimum group was 5. Scott found Kevin, KO, on RUclips, and Kevin introduced then to Avi, a talented basso profundo. Avi left the group in 2017 after his mother was diagnosed with cancer. He helped the group find Matt, his replacement. If you want to hear what Matt can do, look at their rendition of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch ".

I dare say you will notice that Pentatonix has a very large fan base, including myself, who will appear on any reaction done to talk about the group, the other two groups that are in the same field, and this class of music by itself. I would honestly say it is not acapella, because they change what acapella is so dramatically. Compared to classical style of acapella... The barbershop quartets or the large choirs... These are a totally new music. And we love them very very much. As you watch their other shows you will see that overtime they have become more polished, this video was from their first year more or less working independently. Their most recent works include much greater graphical style and equipment as well as much more practice as a group. But every single one of their videos are worth watching. Welcome to the rabbit hole.

Yes! Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole. Literally any song they cover or any of their originals are amazing!! They even have their own side channels! Here is a bit of information about them. The one taking the lead is Mitch and he is a counter tenor. The blond one is Scott and he is a baritone. The female is Kirstin and she is a mezzo soprano. The three of them met in Arlington Texas and were best friends since they were young. They met in musical theater. The beatboxer is Kevin and the bass is Avi. Many people call them the meat and potatoes of the group after a judge from The Sing-Off called them this. And what’s surprising is that the trio and Avi and Kevin met the day before they had to preform fro the sing-off. Which they won!! Also if you check out the PTXperience you can also learn more about their personalities and how tour is like. would recommend every song because they are amazing! Loved this reaction 😊

I came here for the Pentatonix, cause I'm a complete Pentaholic, and I stayed because you and your Mum are adorable! If you do more Pentatonix reactions, I might even decide to subscribe. So, the girl (soprano) is Kirsty, the guy with the high voice (contratenor) is Mitch, the blonde guy (Tenor/Baritone/Bass) is Scott, the beatboxer and general rhythm section is Kevin, and the dark-haired guy with the low voice (Basso Profundo) is Avi. Unfortunately Avi decided to leave in 2017. It was an amicable parting and he helped to find their new Bass singer Matt. You will see Matt in Sound of Silence, when you get to watch it. I loved your faces when you heard Mitch (the high pitched guy who sang the main parts in this song), we Pentaholics call that 'being Mitch-slapped' since most people don't expect a guy to sing that high and get that same look you did. That's not even the highest he can sing either. And the low notes you heard from Avi is not the lowest notes he can sing either.
Mitch, Kirsty and Scott all went to high school together and decided to enter a televised singing competition in the US, which is where they're all from, and decided that their group needed a little something extra so they recruited Avi and Kevin. This rounded out their sound really nicely and they ended up winning the competition. Their prize was a contract with Sony (?), but Sony reneged on the contract and dropped them within a week of the end of the competition. Sony said that they felt that an a capella group was not marketable and wouldn't make any money. Undeterred, the group decided to record on their own and put their stuff on RUclips and built their following that way. They are now one of the most successful a cappella groups ever, and often outstrip regular groups. They have a policy of only using their own voices and not using any post-production effects, auto-tune etc, unless it's made VERY obvious that this is the case. They pride themselves in being able to sing all their songs, live on-stage, without any technical help. So, basically everything you hear is allllll them.
For your Pentatonix education I would recommend listening to Sound of Silence, Hallelujah, Daft Punk Medley, Amazing Grace, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and basically any other Pentatonix song you can get your hands on! Ahhh, what the heck, I'm subscribing now just so I can see you get Mitch-slapped again!

Scott (the tall blond); Mitch (short brown haired guy), and Kirsten sang together in high school in Texas, they found Kevin(the beat boxer) on line, playing the cello and beat boxing. Avi( with a beard they found through the grapevine I think, and when he decided to go solo he helped them find Matt. The original 5 got together for a tv talent show for acappella groups, The Sing Off, and won season 3 in 2011.

Yes, welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole, plus additional ones that branch off it because 1: Each member (6 total, because the original bass left a few years ago due to needing a break from their hectic pace because they got so busy) has solo stuff & collabs with others, a cappella & not. 2: Two of the members, Scott & Mitch, have a side group together that is not a capella, called Superfruit. They also have a separate RUclips channel with that name, where they did vlogs about their life to let fans know them better, funny stuff with & without guests, covers just for fun, & their videos for all their original songs which make up a 2-part album. (They haven't been active as a duo for a bit because Pentatonix got even busier with more & longer tours, they moved from being roomates to separate homes due to one getting serious with their boyfriend, then also they each had some solo projects going on between Pentatonix tours, then the pandemic hit. But it's likely they will put out more Superfruit content at some point.)

Your what we call 'Mitch face' was outstanding. It happens often when people really hear him for the first time. He did the guitar sounds. He only used the megaphone as a prop so you could see who was doing it. Pentaholics call it the Grassi Guitar. I heard them perform this live and it was epic. No megaphone needed and it sounded virtually the same. Pentatonix does not do songs that they cannot do the same way live so people know they can actually do it.

Remember that you asked.... Pentatonix has 5 members. Scott (Blond, Baritone), Mitch (High voice, Counter-Tenor), Kirstie (Girl, Mezzo-Soprano), Kevin, (Beat Boxer), Avi (Bass, Left group in 2017) and replaced by Matt (New Bass). Scott, Mitch and Kirstie (The Trio) grew up in Texas. They have known each other since they were 8 to 10 years old. All three of them were born within 14 months of each other, with Scott being the oldest and Mitch the youngest. They were "Choir Nerds" and involved in Community Theater. They had a couple videos on You Tube as performers in High School. After High School, Scott and Kirstie went to USC (University of Southern California), and University of Oklahoma, respectively. While Scott was at USC he heard about a talent show called "The Sing Off" for a Capella groups. He called his friends and asked if they would join him. They agreed. They needed 5 in the group so added Kevin (found through You Tube videos) and Avi (mutual friend). They wound up winning the show, $200,000 and a Record Contract. They all moved to Los Angeles and were promptly dropped by the record company. They started a channel on You Tube and became popular enough to get a new Record deal. The rest is history. That all started in 2011. They have since won 3 Grammy's (Top Recording Industry Awards in USA) and have sold millions of records and sold out tours. They have 10 years worth of performances. Mostly Covers, but also Original works. They are also well known for their Christmas Albums. Hope you keep reacting to them. They are very talented and have a wide range of material to choose from. Hi ladies, The blond guy Scott, the dark guy with the angelic voice and the girl Kirstie know each other since middle school. They grew up in Austin Texas. When about 2011 Scott wanted to participate in "The Sing Off" a talent show, he asked both and they said yes, but... you have to be 5 (penta) to do it. Scott saw a black guy Kevin on YT playing a cello and beatboxing at the same time. The others found a bearded guy with very deep voice and studying opera, Avi Kaplan. They won the competition and 200.000 USD and a contract with Sony.
About a week later after competition, Sony kicked them out, keeping the money. So they decided to make a music video, everybody said can't be done, with their last money 400 USD in the apartment of Kevin and Avi in LA. Filming in the kitchen doing the singing in the wardrobe (because of traffic noise they created so to speak their first grammy. DAFT PUNK MEDLEY.
Their most seen video on YT is Hallelujah of Len Cohen 615 million views to date. All of what you see and hear, they also do live on stage, or for charity. They sang in the Austin children's hospital, first for the nurses and doctors and then on some of the stations for children, who might never leaf again alive. Stay save and healthy. German greetings.

Scott (tall blonde), Mitch (the skinny brunette) and Kirstie (the girl) all grew up together in Arlignton Texas, Mitch met Kirstie when they were 8, Scott met Mitch when they were ten and Kirstie and Scott met when they were 15. They all went to the same highschool (Mitch a year behind) so they started a trio and harmonizing that way. Once Scott and Kirstie graduated and went to College, Mitch was still a Senior, Scott found out about an acapella competition show called the "Sing-Off" so he called up Kirstie and Mitch to audition but they needed at least five people in a group so Scott found Kevin (the beatboxer) off of youtube and found Avi (the guy with the beard) through a mutual friend and auditioned with "Telephone by lady gaga" (you should react to that) anyway the Sing off was from 2011-2012 and they actually won the sing off and won a recording contract but were sadly dropped after they moved to L.A. So they started uploading regular vids by themselves until they were picked up by RCA records and the rest is History. Sadly Avi left the group for personal reason's in 2017 and now they have a new bass, Matt, who is just as good.

Otherwise a few must see videos are covers Hallelujah, Imagine, Can't Help Falling in Love, Problem, Gold, No, Can't Hold Us. Originals Can't Sleep Love, Sing, Love Again, Light in the Hallway, Run to You, Standing By. And of course any of the Christmas music.

Always fun to see newcomers to the PTX universe. You just tipped the edge of very large iceberg. They have so very many great songs in their repertoire. From dance song medleys to John Lennon's "Imagine", they are all stunning.

Before Covid they were selling out 12,000 ticket arenas in the U.S., and only had the European leg left of their World Tour when quarantine shut everything down. They rescheduled the European dates for this spring/summer but they had to cancel them to be scheduled at a future date. PTX tours almost year around, so hopefully soon they can get back on the road and sharing their talent with all who love them. My kids loved them and I took them to a concert thinking no way they can pull off these songs live. I was very wrong, and became a fan myself. 🙂

The three sitting on the back of the couch -- Scott (tall blond baritone), Mitch (high counter tenor), and Kirstin (mezzo soprano; pronounced "Cur-stin") -- have known each other since they were kids. They grew up together in Texas doing musical theater productions.
Scott and Kirstin went off to university in California and Oklahoma; Mitch stayed in Texas for his senior year of high school. (British translation: 6th form.) Scott met Ben Bram and they decided to put together a group for the Sing Off. It's a tv show like America's Got Talent but only for a cappella groups.
They decided they needed a beatboxer, so they recruited Kevin off of RUclips. and they needed a bass so they found Avi (pronounced "ahh-vee") through mutual friends. Avi left in 2017 for personal reasons and was replaced by Matt.
They didn't meet as a full group until the day before the audition for the Sing Off. Mitch stayed to finish his senior exams in high school and skipped the graduation ceremony. Kevin stayed to finish his exams at Yale so he could graduate. He was planning to go to med school. and he speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese.
They won the Sing Off and moved to Los Angeles but the record company promptly dropped them. They decided to do things themselves on RUclips. They were successful and another record company picked them up, on more favorable turns to the band.
Currently, they have over 19 million subscribers and over 5 billion views. (with a "b")
They have won three Grammy Awards and have multi-Platinum-selling records. Nine of their albums have his the top 10 on BIllboard's 200 chart. They have toured around the world multiple times stopping in over two dozen countries by my count.
Given that history it is surprising that more people haven't heard of them. They are still going up against the "oh, it's just a cappella" attitude from people who don't even bother listening to them.

Scott Hoying (baritone) and Mitch Grassi (counter tenor) have known each other since they were 10, doing community theater in Arlington, Texas. Shortly after meet Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo soprano), attending middle, then high school together performing in many community plays and singing in choir. While Scott was in college he had the idea to audition for the Sing Off. They decided they needed a bass and a beat boxer. They meet Avi Kaplan through a friend of a friend, and found Kevin Olusola on a you tube video. All meeting the first time just before the Sing Off. They are considered by many to be leaders in an acapella movement to the limelight. With 3 Grammy Awards, no. 1 billboard albums and several Award performances (AMA Star Wars Theme, Micheal Jackson And Bee Gees dedication) Plus all of their amazing Christmas songs, covers and originals will keep you on a Pentatonix journey for a while. Their very loyal fans(Pentaholics) will enjoy sharing it with you.

Be aware. The young man with the beard left at the end of 2017. He left on good terms, and helped choose his replacement. By the way. Pentatonix isn’t just an acapella group, they are THE
    ACAPELLA group.
1/ The girl (Kirstin Maldonado) IS American. She’s a mezzo-soprano and is. Latina. Born and raised in Texas.
    2/ The men:
    A. Scott Hoying. Tall blonde. Sings bass when the bass is soloing. Otherwise, he sings baritone.
    B. Mitch Grassi. Lead singer on this. He’s a counter-tenor, who changes his look a lot. A lot! He and Kirstin change hairstyles a lot, and he’s lost weight in the 10 years PTX (Pentatonix) has been a group. It can look like there are all kids of new members from one video to another, but the only personnel change was when Avi left in 2017.
**Mitch, Kirstin and Scott grew up together in Arlington, Texas.**
    C. Kevin Olusola. He beatboxes, sometimes while playing cello (“cello-boxing”-Kevin is a master cellist!), plays cello, graduated from a pre-med program at Yale University, (and turned down a chance for medical school to join PTX). He also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. And he and his wife became parents on April 3!
    D. Avi Kaplan (2011-2017) and Matt Sallee (2017-present) Bass. Avi is a trained opera singer, and Matt is a graduate of the Berkelee College of Music in Boston with a degree in Vocal Performance.
PTX celebrates their 10th anniversary this year!

I'm glad you have finally heard Pentatonix and can now join the world of Pentaholics lol. Here are links to a few of my favorite covers they've done. Avi, the one who did the base lines with his voice is not in all of these. He left the group to pursue other avenues and was replaced by Matt. "Imagine"- ruclips.net/video/NLiWFUDJ95I/видео.html "The Sound of Silence"-ruclips.net/video/gdVjVtpr55M/видео.html "Amazing Grace"-ruclips.net/video/Obp-9BEZe1c/видео.html "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"-ruclips.net/video/cT1Kzk7akjQ/видео.html If you react to any of their videos I would suggest using a filter over the video as it plays to avoid having it deleted due to copyright infringement. If not, you would probably have to pause periodically which can take away from some of the emotion they convey.
