The majority of his work that I have had the brilliant luck to come across, is more like "performance art" than just music. This piece, for example, is lyrically, and musically engrossing, in and of itself, laced with similies, metaphors, double entendre, beautifully descriptive details, and sweeping melodic outbursts, but you take: the different camera angles used for the 2 battling parts of his psyche, the different tones of voice used for each (aggressive vs. passive), the different lighting cues for each (flashing vs. steady), and the vocal inflection used for each (anger vs. calm), and you get a sense of perspective from each of those that helps to move the narrative. It's like an rock operetta. It evokes emotion, introspection, empathy, sympathy, happiness, sorrow, and even a feeling of resolution. I LOVE this performance. He definitely deserves ALL the accolades he is currently garnering from the world.

The reason Ren blew up is because of how authentic and relatable this video was for so many people. He portrays an internal battle that many of us fight every single day. That challenging, belittling voice is something most of us experience, and it can feel like it holds all the power. But Ren also portrayed the voice of hope, and that's what gets most of us through the day.
I don't think I've ever seen another artist be that vulnerable, or tackle a subject in such a way as to meld my own experience with theirs. It hit me right at my core. This is beyond music. It's an experience.

this video is an amalgam of four different takes and some hand held camera work. He has some fabulous one takes, and some fabulous minimal cut takes. This is not one. The mic appears and disappears through the clip and his gown length changes between camera cuts. I have some brain damage from an accident so please forgive me forgetting the proper title for a moment lol. If you search for...
The Big Push - I shot the sheriff
... you will find the video. The one you should watch has Hip Hop at the end of the title, I think. It's an incredible video filmed on the streets of your lovely hometown, Brighton. Who knows? Maybe you were in the crowd that day. You will love it either way.

The confusion and difficulty finding words is typical after experiencing Ren. There are no criteria to qualify to listen to Ren's music, and you've checked off all the items you could ever need to become a Renegade:
    * you're open-minded,
    * you pay attention to whats happening in the music,
    * You've engaged the Renegades and elicited a dialog
**BONUS** You have prior first-hand experience of Ren. Please share. We love that stuff, haha
Was watching you young ladies through your Angelina discovery and path, so very happy to see you join in on this rabbit hole. The Renegades are very engaging, supportive, knowledgable, and always happy to help with any questions, insider information, and/or direction to follow the Ren rabbit hole. ❤❤

Loved your reaction, ladies. My elder brother was a street busker for much of his life, with a period in folk singing, and then pop in the late 1960's before returning to busking [Don Partridge]. He spent his last years in Seaford and Peacehaven, close to Brighton, and often busked in Brighton, so when he died the corporation named a bus after him. So, like you, I have a special affinity for buskers and for Brighton. Ren is probably the most amazing, creative and theatrical musical artist I have ever heard or seen. I know that you will both enjoy your Ren journey!

This is art of transcendent beauty and an *important* song.
Artists often struggle with imposter syndrome. There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this and was a transformative experience for me-much the same as this song resonates.
As a person who’s never been able to escape negative self-talk and imposter syndrome, *realizing* that I can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that already resides within me-was sooo important.
It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it.
*Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison.
You are *stronger* than that voice.
You are stronger than you can *possibly* know…
until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.

Hi Guys, great reaction. I also consider myself lucky enough to have seen Ren and the Big Push Busking Live. I own the Shell Shop on Brighton Beach and REN used to busk directly opposite (remember this if you ever react to the Money Game Trilogy). I had many a conversation with him about his illness and his fight to get to Canada to get the right treatment. In fact we used to look after all his busking gear in his wheelbarrow. I thought he was gifted and talented back then but now I am just in awe in how far he has come considering all the battles he has faced. Beware, the REN rabbithole is deep and very rewarding. Us Renegades are not only here for him but we are here to help spread every message he is giving us. He is making people talk and get help for things that were too often kept quiet and wrongly never spoken about. REN with his talents is bringing people together and helping them realise that they are not alone. REN is BARDCORE. REN is saving lives

I don't have high enough praise.

Just found your channel with this video, been watching reactions to the song all day. Was pleasantly surprised to hear that you saw this guy performing before he was well known. This reaction in particular is interesting to me because of how there are two generations reacting to something that my yet even younger generation has produced (the suffering caused by our circumstances that leads to the creation of art like this). The world has begun to change so quickly and all the different generations still living currently seem to struggle relating to each other. The way this message affects all these different generations is different in some ways and the same in others. Society changes at a furious pace, but simultaneously human nature has always been and always will be the same. The mum cracked me up a bit 😂. Some people when they get older and mature, lose their ability to just laugh and enjoy life. Clearly she is not afflicted by this problem lol. God bless you guys, well wishes from the US 🙏

He is a miracle and his music speaks volume.

The one thing I love the most about these ..... "Ren reactions" is when you see people realize how honest he is and how he pierces through the shells of our daily lives. Honesty is a thing that frightens most people.
The song with Chincilla is called "Chalk Outlines", it's just as great as this one.

  • @LiannaBabeli

Hello and welcome to the RENiverse, ladies.
Let me introduce you to... Ren Gill, he is a 34 year old Welsh native (Wales from the United Kingdom, specifically from the Island of Anglesey off the northwestern coast of Wales) and currently resides in Brighton, England (a southern English Channel beach town with an insanely active busking [live street performing] scene). He has been performing since he was 12 years old.
He is entirely self-trained. He speaks native Welsh, English, French, and I do believe a bit of Italian, IIRC? He is exceptional at the guitar, piano, and vocalisation. He is a totally independent artist who has no record label to represent him or, more importantly, control him. He is a rapper, a multi-instrumentalist, a producer, a singer-songwriter, a composer, and truly the definition of genre-less. He can do any genre, produce any sound or beat, and he can do it all for nothing. No song is like another, no beat is the same, no way to judge anything based on what each song is. Again, it must be repeated: he is SELF-trained and has never had formal training for his music or productions.
At the age of 19, he contracted Lyme Disease from a tick bite he received while on a trip with his friends. He was misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led to severe psychosis, for several years until he was properly diagnosed by a Swiss physician. Due to not receiving the appropriate treatment for Lyme Disease within the very short time frame after contraction, the disease has ravaged his body and mind, causing permanent brain damage, severe issues with digestion, sleep, nerves, and various other health problems. It caused him horrendous, chronic, violent pain to the point of being bedridden for years. Music is the reason he has survived.
I'd like to provide some cultural context for this artist from another extremely talented artist:
This is what the Irish folk rock artist Sinead O’Connor posted on social media after watching Hi Ren: “Holy motherfuckin SHIT! Someone just showed me this at the weekend. This Archangel from like, twelfth heaven or somewhere, has only gone and made the entire history of songwriting and performing look like a three year old's birthday party at Burger King.
Every song and or artist in history even Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, NWA, Ice Cube, and even Bob Dylan, is officially relegated to class B. As are every actor in history or legend: living or dead, male or female. We all are now defunct." Posted on May 17th, 2023, 2 months before self-deletion in July 2023.
I recommend watching Sick Boi, Troubles, and the 'Chapters' from his RenMakesStuff (BTS channel for Ren) for a much deeper comprehension of his journey.
Hi Ren was recorded live in the basement of an apartment building in Brighton, England. It was literally a crew of five people, cost 50 quid (~$62) to make, and the audio is entirely one take. The video is spliced across four one takes. It is recorded live with a lavalier lapel microphone, a portable guitar amp and recording device, three cameras, and Ren's laptop. He rehearsed this piece literally thousands of times before he even recorded the music video to provide certainty that he would get the guitar notes perfectly and his delivery as perfect as possible.
This piece is a very personal one for Ren and was the first time in his musicianship to properly acknowledge his ailment, his journey, and his issues musically. He has hinted at it in all of his previous works prior to it, but this was the first time it was out in the open, purposefully.
The 'Pig' from the beginning is an essential symbol in the RENiverse and appears in many, if not most, of his other music videos and media. It represents the corrupted and abused systems of the world that take and take and take and never give back to the people they are supposed to support: medicine, music, finances, trade, commerce, government, etc…
There are actually four characters in this piece: the yodeller at the beginning and end (representing a call to aspirations), self (the calm and soft one on the 'right'), doubt (the 'evil' one on the 'left'), and hope (the one in the 'centre' near the end of the piece).
The written poetry at the end of the piece is a very simplified summary of his real journey and represents his most primary belief system.
Hi Ren is a continuation of Sick Boi, which is recorded live (though not a one take) in the same basement a few weeks prior to Hi Ren. It was also produced for practically no money and it represents his feelings on commoditization, greed, the healthcare industry, and the music industry in a generalised yet very specific manner.
So glad to finally hear from someone familiar with Brighton and Ren's/The Big Push's work being locals. I am sure by now, since I am posting this several months after you originally posted and have already reacted to other songs of his, you realise how exceptionally important he is to so many people around the world. He has literally saved hundreds of thousands of lives and changed the lives of millions of people. He is the epitome of 21st century music and I love him so much. I can't wait to afford the ability to come to Brighton and see his old haunts and experience Brighton's culture. Trust me, I pay quite a bit of attention to the background of his busking videos hehe.
You both really need to do more Ren. You have not even touched a 60th of his total catalogue, not even including his work with The Big Push, his band, or his collaborations, or his many busking moments.
Have fun! Welcome to the RENegades and the RENiverse. Much peace and love to you. ^^

You are coming at Ren with a fresh perspective, one that intrigues me: I see in his many busking videos all the passerby who stop to enjoy his beautiful music and yet, perhaps, are not aware of the myriad health issues that have plagued him and, in fact, inspired much of his music (latest album = Sick Boi).
This is a very different perspective from the youtube audience such as myself who have learned about the health issues as soon as discovering Ren.
I would love to hear, as you dive into his videos, whether your impression of him has changed since the busking days!
